“Oh, I Want to Know What Happens in the Next Chapter . . .” : A Qualitative Study of Reading Interest from a Student Perspective in Grade 3 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines reading interest from a student perspective in Grade 3. Previous research indicates a decline in students´ interest in reading and limited knowledge of their own reading experiences, while educational policy documents emphasize the school´s responsibility to foster reading. The aim of the study is to contribute knowledge about reading interest from a student perspective in Grade 3. The study is guided by the following research questions: How do students describe their experiences of and interest in reading in school? What factors do students describe as influencing their interest in reading? The study is based on a sociocultural perspective on learning and The Active View of Reading, where reading is understood as an interaction between cognitive, social, and motivational factors. A qualitative method was employed, based on nine semi-structured interviews, and the data were analyzed trough qualitative content analysis. The results show that reading interest is situational and shaped by several interacting factors. Positive experiences are associated with engaging content, freedom of choise, and calm reading situations, while negative factors mainly consist of difficult text, disruptive environments and limited access to interesting literature. Students also relate reading to school tasks and future needs. The conclusion is that reading interest emerges through the interaction between the individual, the text, and the social context, where school organization and learning environment play a central role.
