"Read-aloud practices create a shared frame of reference, a sense of togetherness" : A qualitative study of teachers´ perceptions of the role of read-aloud practices in developing students´ reading engagement and reading comprehension. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Considering decreased leisure-time reading and declining reading comprehension results, students´ reading engagement and reading comprehension are negatively affected. The aim of the study is therefore to contribute knowledge regarding teachers´ perceptions of the role of read-aloud practices in developing students´ reading engagement and reading comprehension from preschool to grade 3. The collected empirical material consists of six semi-structured interviews. The study is based on a sociocultural perspective. The study´s results, based on the accounts of six different teachers, show that teachers distinguish between dialogic and monologic read-alouds as pedagogical approaches. Based on the teachers´ accounts, read-aloud practices can increase students´ reading engagement through literary choices that capture students´ interest, discussions connected to students´ own experiences, and a shared frame of reference that contributes to a sense of belonging. Furthermore, dialogic read-aloud practices can improve students´ reading comprehension through teachers´ modelling reading comprehension strategies, where the teacher provides support through, for example questions, visual support and vocabulary explanations. Overall, the study´s results show that teachers use read-aloud practices in different ways to develop students reading engagement and reading comprehension.
