Teachers' Understanding of Proportionality : A study of six teachers' mathematics knowledge linked to Profound Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics in grades 4–6. (English)
Abstract [en]

This study investigates teachers' understanding of fundamental mathematics within proportionality. The study is based on the framework Profound Understanding of Fundamental Mathematics (PUFM) introduced by Ma (1999) which describes the deep and comprehensive knowledge teachers need to teach mathematics. The purpose of the study is to examine teachers' reasoning and the strategies they use when solving a task involving proportionality, as well as to analyze these strategies and reasoning in relation to the four characteristics of the PUFM framework: Connectedness, multiple perspective, basic ideas and longitudinal coherence. To achieve the purpose of the study, semi-structed interviews were conducted with six qualified teachers who teach mathematics in grades 4-6. The results indicate that the teachers demonstrate a well-developed understanding and reasoning about proportionality and that they are able to apply a variety of strategies and representational forms when reasoning about proportional relationships. These findings align with several of the characteristics described in the PUFM framework.
