Improve material flow and its handling in an assembly line for internal transport within the automotive industry (English)
Abstract [en]

Purpose – Improve material flow and its handling in an assembly line for internal transport within the automotive industry.

(1) What types of waste are present in internal material delivery to an assembly line in the automotive industry?

(2) How can the sequence of delivery improve internal transport to an assembly line in the automotive industry?

Method – The study's method is carried out as a case study, designed as a one-case study. The data collection techniques used to provide evidence along with the theoretical framework that are used to answer the two research questions are observations, interviews, document studies and measurements.

Findings – The results of the first question show that there is waste in the assembly line in the form of unnecessary storage, overwork and unnecessary movements. These can then be eliminated or reduced using the results of the second question as they are areas affected by the material deliveries. Sequencing the material delivery helps free up floor space that can be used to widen the adjacent truck aisle, which is a step in ongoing projects to reach an ideal operation.

Implications – Lean's establishment in the automotive industry contributes to the fact that more companies in this industry should be able to use the results. The fact that the case study is designed as a single-case study reduces the possibility of generalizable results, however, with similarities within the automative industry, this work can inspire companies that  face similar issues. When rebuilding or building assembly lines within the case company, the result is a working basis. The study shows the importance of identifying the root cause of problems as they can have a chain reaction and affect other problem areas.

Limitations – The case study is limited to only handling high runners within the case company that are used on selected assembly lines. The case study is based solely on one company and therefore entails a certain limitation.

Keywords –Lean, frequency, heijunka, kaizen, muda, waste, ordering systems, fluctuations, trigger points, communication, just in time, just in sequence, material flow.

Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord – Fordonsindustrin, Lean, sekvensleverans, muda, heijunka, beställningsknapp, beställningspunkt, kaizen, just i time, just in sequence, materialflöde.
