The new white poison : A pretest-posttest experiment to examine message appeals’ effect on attitude to tobacco-free snus and intentions to consume tobacco-free snus (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how effectively message appeals can be applied in the context of the modern media landscape in order to make people not want to consume health-hazardous products. An experiment with a pretest-posttest design, was conducted to test the effects of fear appeal and social appeal with an influencer as the sender, on the participants' attitudes towards tobacco-free snus and (depending on whether they were active consumers or not) intentions to stop consuming tobacco-free snus or intentions to try tobacco-free snus. The studied population was students at Jönköping University within the ages 18–30, the sample consisted of 69 participants. The study was based on a theoretical framework which included risk communication theories, the two-step flow of communication and relevant previous research.

The results showed that fear appeal with an influencer as the sender was effective in all aspects except regarding people’s intentions to stop consuming tobacco-free snus, where no effect was observed. Social appeal with an influencer as the sender showed the undesired effect, except on people’s intentions to try tobacco-free snus.

Based on the results of the study, fear appeal with an influencer as the sender is effective, social appeal, on the other hand, is proven not to be. However, due to methodological problems, these conclusions are not certain and further research is needed.
