Fiction literature : A teacher perspective on reading strategies in grades 4-6 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills required in school for a student to fully benefit from their education. It is a key competence that enhances an individual’s ability to acquire and process information, interpret and analyze texts, and develop an understanding of the surrounding world. Through the use of reading strategies and fiction, students are given the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the content and message of texts. The study examines which reading strategies Swedish teachers in grades 4-6 perceive as beneficial for students’ reading comprehension in the context of teaching fiction. It also examines how these strategies are used in teaching. The study is based on a sociocultural perspective and transactional theory. The material consists of semi-structured interviews with six practicing Swedish teachers and has been analyzed thematically. The interviews were supplemented with a short questionnaire about the teachers' professional experiences. The results show that fiction plays a central role in the teachers’ teaching and is used through read-alouds, independent reading, shared reading and text discussions. Text discussions, work with words and concepts, predicting and summarizing are perceived as important for students' reading comprehension. An important conclusion is that teaching reading comprehension through fiction is characterized by variation, continuity and collaborative work with texts. The use of different reading strategies in working with fiction literature can help strengthen students’ reading comprehension.
