It is a changed city” – older people’s experiences of an age-friendly city (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: With a global development in which the proportion of older people in the population is increasing and more and more people are living in cities, new needs arise regarding how society is planned and designed. To address these demographic changes, approaches that promote an age-friendly city are required. The World Health Organization network for age-friendly cities aims to create conditions for healthy ageing. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe older people´s experiences of living in an age-friendly city. Method: The study is a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach, based on interviews with twelve individuals living in a city affiliated with the World Health Organization’s network of age-friendly cities. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings show that older people experiences are shaped by the interplay between individual opportunities and structural conditions. The participants describe an active approach to engaging with the city’s offerings. The possibility of ageing in place, defined as remaining in one's own residential area, along with access to nearby services, emerged as a key factor in promoting independence and perceived security. Additionally, a sense of belonging and the design of the physical environment are of great importance for older people´s everyday lives. Conclusions: The results show that the city is generally perceived as age friendly. The authors suggest that more Swedish cities and municipalities join the World Health Organization network for age-friendly cities in order to promote healthy ageing.
