Occupational therapy and person-centeredness within Swedish palliative care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care is provided for individuals with terminal illnesses. Person-centered care implies that healthcare professionals addresses the individual, their will, unique needs and symptoms. Research on how occupational therapists work person-centered within palliative care is lacking in Sweden.

Aim: To highlight how occupational therapists in Sweden apply person-centeredness in the meeting with people receiving palliative care.

Method: A qualitative design with semi-structured interviews with ten participants. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze collected data.

Results: Four categories and nine subcategories emerged. The categories were: Prioritize time with relations and visits, Get help from the surroundings to map meaningful activities, Balance diagnostic knowledge with an understanding for the unique person, Suggest interventions in meaningful activities.

Conclusions: Participants apply person-centeredness by proceeding from the person's will, build relationships, quiet during meetings, using the home-environment and acknowledge the person his/her right to decide. Further research within the subject is needed.

Implications: To work person-centered, occupational therapists need to proceed from the persons will, take time for relationship to grow, map the home-environment that can give information about interests, suggests interventions or adaptations for meaningful occupations and posses knowledge about the diagnosis but focus on the person.
