Nurses experiences in primary care of taking care of patients with chronic pain : A literature review with qualitative approach (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Long term pain is estimated to affect approximately 20% of the population worldwide. Pain-related issues are one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care in Sweden, leading to high healthcare costs and a significant burden on the healthcare system. Nurses are key figures in the care of patients with long term pain. Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences in primary care of caring for patients living with chronic pain. Method: A literature review was conducted based on 14 articles with qualitative design which were analyzed using a nine-step model (Polit & Beck, 2021). Results: Two themes (challenges in nursing care, the importance of communication in nursing care) and six subthemes were identified. Conclusion: Lack of time, limited resources, and organizational barriers hinder the provision of care, increasing the risk of patient suffering and affecting the work of nurses. To improve care, structural changes, continuing education, and better coordination are needed.
