Abstract [en]

Child maltreatment is a significant global health and welfare issue, with severe and lifelong consequences for those affected. Despite this, there is insufficient research regarding children's experiences of disclosure and the influencing factors that lead to the disclosure of maltreatment. This study aims to explore the factors that adults who have experienced maltreatment as children consider essential for children's opportunity for the disclosure of maltreatment. A qualitative, narrative research design and an inductive narrative, thematic analysis method were used. The research strongly emphasizes the significance of professionals' characteristics, such as being safe and patient, as well as being able to express genuine interest and be available for the children. The study emphasizes the significance of creating a supportive and trusting environment for children to disclose their experiences without interruptions, actively listen to them, and adapt to their preferred disclosure methods. It also highlights the importance of professionals providing consistent guidance and support to empower children throughout the disclosure process. Additionally, the study delves into the barriers children face when disclosing maltreatment, such as fear of consequences and societal stigmatization. The findings suggest that professionals play a pivotal role in establishing a safe environment and building trust to encourage children to authenticate their experiences. The findings of this study can contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing the disclosure of maltreatment and can provide valuable insights for professionals and policymakers working to combat child maltreatment.
