VIRTUAL REALITY FOR SPINAL CORD INJURIES (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Introduction: Virtual Reality (VR)-based therapy may improve motor and executive functions for people with various medical conditions, including stroke. However, VR-based therapy in complex rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) remains underexplored from an occupational perspective. Aim: This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise the literature on VR-based interventions in rehabilitation of people with SCI from an occupational perspective. Method: A literature search of quantitative studies was performed in four databases, in addition to grey literature and a manual search. Data were analysed using basic qualitative content analysis. Results: Twelve studies were included. The findings showed that VR-based therapy may decrease neuropathic pain and enhance walking function, balance and sitting balance. Less is known about VR-based therapy relating to mental wellbeing and there were mixed results on performance in activities of daily living (ADL). Conclusions: The findings suggest that VR-based therapy has potential to complement existing occupational therapy and may address various rehabilitation goals. Overall, the use of VR is reportedly safe within a therapeutic context.  Significance: VR-based therapy may support rehabilitation of people with SCI. However, to promote an occupational perspective, future research is needed to explore VR-based therapy using ADLs and occupation-related outcome measures.
