Abstract [sv]

The proposed project will investigate the French antiracist movement´s shifting attitudes towards Jews and Muslims in post-war France. The relationship between these two communities has long been tense, and the French antiracist movement in the post-war period has been directly concerned with this polarisation. The purpose of the project will be to understand to what extent the French antiracist movement, with its universal orientation, left room for the specific interests of France´s Jewish and Muslim communities, and in which ways the anti-racist organisations constructed arguments for intercultural solidarity between the communities in the post-war period. The project will draw on recent research on multiculturalism, identity politics, and universalism, and, using a discourse-oriented approach, will analyse shifting attitudes towards Jews and Muslims. In this way, the study will provide a deeper understanding of how the antiracist movement dealt with the tensions and conflicts between the two communities, and the extent to which Jews´ and Muslims´ identity politics influenced the antiracist movement in France. Research on this issue is also important from a broader societal perspective, especially considering the increasing tensions between Jews and Muslim in France and across Europe today. The project will be conducted at the Centre Alberto-Benveniste, part of the École pratique des hautes études in Paris, which has pioneered research on Jewish-Muslim relations.
