Connectivity and cross-scale dynamics: MBA learning - experiences across three regions2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How can non-experts and, particularly, business professionals and students grasp key issues around industry, connectivity and cross-scale dynamics? Here we will present the findings of our pedagogical work, undertaken during more than two years across three regions (Perth in Western Australia, a mining-dependent state, and the two fast-developing regions of Singapore and Dubai). Our key assumption is that it is precisely the business community the one that needs to understand and address important connectivity issues, as industry is the main driver of the Anthropocene. We engaged our MBA [Master in Business Administration] students in an amateur, documentary-style film-making project centered on the linkages between industry, the Anthropocene and the planetary boundaries framework (Rockstrom et al, 2009; Steffen et al, 2015). Here we will present the multiple insights and outcomes (at cognitive, skills and emotional spheres) resulting from their experiential-learning project, and how similar pedagogical experiences may help learners identify key industry dynamics, interactions and teleconnections - experiencing those at the local level ("in their own skin" or "backyard"), at regional and planetary levels. We argue that these are key issues for organizational leaders, to foster deeper and more informed approaches to justice and responsibility and, ultimately, to reconnect with the biosphere.

ÖKA BIM-ANVÄNDNINGEN -UR BESTÄLLARPERSPEKTIV2017Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to map the level of knowledge and demand that the clients in today's construction industry have of the BIM aid. This will be achievedby identifying the possibilities and obstacles they believe that BIM causes the project. The aim is to develop a proposal on how to increase the use of BIM in the Swedish construction industry.

Method: This thesis covers an analysis of the current situation regarding the client’s knowledge of a specific topic, qualitative interviews were chosen to enable the respondents’ answers to be developed after their personal experiences. Both interviews and literature studies were conducted to identify the pros and cons of BIM since a comparison could be made between the client's assumptions against the theory. In order to develop a proposal on how to increase the usage of BIM, all the previously collected data was combined to develop a foundation that is then built up with the collected empirical and theoretical data for the specific question.

Findings: BIM is a foreign term for most of the clients in today’s industry, which makes the demand for correct BIM-models minimal or non-existing. Although the benefits of BIM creates more efficient, productive and quality-proof projects, the lack of knowledge, competence and proven projects in the Swedish construction industry creates a fear that makes the actors wait to make an investment. Therefore, the clients usually choose the visual short-term profits over the long-term profits. In order to streamline the usage of BIM an increased understanding of the potentials that BIM holds is needed. Competence development, training, a show of BIM completed projects in the Swedish construction industry, an appointed BIM coordinator in the early stages of the design processes and a standardization of a fileformat.

Implications: BIM has a great potential in the construction industry. The use would mean a simpler and clearer process for the involved actors, which would benefit the engineers’ work, since safer and more effective calculations would be presented. This could result in lower overall costs, reduction and prevention of errors. However, the competence and knowledge of many of the clients are lacking at present and the use of BIM is considered unrealistic as one needs to readjust the entire market and perform an intensive learning process during the boom.

Limitations: The thesis has been carried out in the Småland region and is limited to the client's perspective and a few entrepreneurs' perspective of BIM.

Keywords: BIM, Clients, Developers, BIM streamlining.

Idrottsagentens arvode: Hur sker beskattning enligt svensk rätt?2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kvalificerade underprisöverlåtelser: Kan arbetsinsats utgöra underlag för beräkning av ersättning?2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Successful Succession in Family Businesses: Individual Level Factors and Succession Planning Models.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Individual level factors related to the successor have a central role to play in the succession process of the business. When these factors are viewed in relation to succession planning models, these factors have a direct relation to the succession models in terms of success or failure of the succession process. The major contributing factor to the success or failure of the succession process is that of the leadership provided to the organization by the predecessor. These leadership qualities change from one form to another during different phases of the succession planning models.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This report will try to evaluate the use of rented concrete casting moulds, which are used to build walls and system of joists. The evaluation is only examining the economical aspects.

The cost of using concrete casting moulds is a big part of the total production expenses. Therefore it is important that the calculated price not exceeds the final costs of the casting moulds. The calculated price is the price used in the process of making an offer.

The evaluation consists of a comparison of the calculated price and the final costs for three building projects. It also evaluates the exploitation of the concrete casting moulds for each project.

The report is made by Sven Gynne and Anders Alexandersson at School of Engineering, Jonkoping University, in cooperation with PEAB Jonkoping. The evaluation is strictly based on the calculated price and final cost of rented concrete casting moulds, only the moulds themselves, not the labour costs.

Educational visits have been made to the three projects gathering facts. The conclusions we have drawn are that the difference between the calculated price and the final costs are considerable, especially one project have a greater difference than the others. The reasons for that are among other things tight building ground and a complicated building construction.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents various forms of activities performed by locally based social welfare research and development (R&D) units in Sweden. The authors argue that these units are vital actors in the field of encouraging and strengthening evidence-based social work practice. They are close to social services organisations and have the ability to use flexible methods in order to bridge the gap between research and practice in a local context. The theoretical framework for the article is the organisational excellence model – an archetype for how research can be used in practice.

The tyranny of the temporal dimension: learning about fundamental values through the Internet2006In: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, ISSN 0031-3831, E-ISSN 1470-1170, Vol. 50, no 4, p. 411-427Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we report on one of four schools involved in a research project aiming to develop knowledge about the way in which teaching knowledge is conveyed with the help of information and communication technology. A particular interest was issues of fundamental values. Two classes in Grade 9 of Swedish compulsory school were studied, by observations and interviews, when seeking information about international conflicts on the Internet. The results show that most students searched for and collected information with a focus on mainly one dimension: the temporal dimension of the conflict in question. How this focus on chronologically ordered historical events affected the students' ability to develop the capacity for individual standpoints on questions concerning ethics, morals, equality, and democracy by way of studying conflicts is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Increased trade and exchange within the European Community has brought with it the need for less restricted circulation of judgments. The situation has improved greatly due to the enactment of Regulation (EC) No. 44/2001 on jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters (the Brussels I Regulation).

Despite recent improvements the proceedings are still time-consuming and difficult. Many creditors refrain from having judgments recognized and enforced as the proceedings cost too much time and are too time-consuming. On January the 21st 2005 a new Regulation entered into force, Regulation (EC) No. 805/2004 creating a European Enforcement Order for uncontested claims (The Enforcement Order Regulation). The purpose of the Regulation is to permit free circulation of judgments.

A judgment can be certified as a European Enforcement Order and is thereby directly enforceable throughout the European Community. Intermediate proceedings declaring the judgment enforceable are abolished. An issued European Enforcement Order furthermore prevents the parties from opposing enforcement. The exequatur is abolished and the judgment is examined only by the Member State of origin before being certified as a European Enforcement Order.

The Regulation applies from October the 21st 2005. Until then only speculations can be made about its impact on the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. This study of the Enforcement Order Regulation and its scope shows some weak points. The Enforcement Order Regulation does however in general seem to be well suited to obtain the stated purpose: permitting free circulation of judgments.

Ideology and Orientalism in American and Cuban news media: Representation of the Chinese government in foreign media during the Umbrella Revolution2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine the representation of the Chinese government in foreign media during the Umbrella Revolution along 2014. Hence, this paper analyzes The New York Times and Granma by using Critical Discourse Analysis along with Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis in order to reveal underlying ideology and Orientalism in their news discourse. Thus, this study aims to understand how influenced is their representation of the Chinese government by the ideology of their countries. In that way, ideology and Orientalism are the theories implemented in this research. Additionally, in order to understand the relationship between media and the establishment in United States and Cuba, the Liberal model and the Soviet Communist theory are respectively applied. Moreover, the Propaganda model is also implemented to study in depth the level of influence that the establishment has on the media. In this sense, the research reveals that the representation of Cuban and American media was influenced by the ideology of their countries and that both sides ‘othered’ each other. Hence, both constructions aimed to impose Capitalism or Communism as the most valid socio-economic system.

Population Ageing and Average Retirement Age: A cross-sectional analysis on OECD countries2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The issue of population ageing becomes more prominent, countries will see a change in the population structure where a majority will belong to the cohort aged 65 and over. This shift in the population structure raises challenges which in turn will affect a country’s economic growth. In the future a larger share of people will enter retirement than ever before, and being able to keep individuals to stay in the labour force is one attempt which can increase the economic growth. Today, elderly tend to retire before the withdrawal age which in many countries is set to 65. The purpose of this research is to identify which factors affect individual’s average age at which they tend to retire. This is conducted by the use of a cross-sectional analysis based upon the 36 member countries of OECD where data has been collected from the year 2016. By the use of an Ordinary Least Squares method, results show that factors such as education, old- age dependency ratio, and average salaries are significant factors which all impacts the average retirement age negatively.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Talent Retention: A case study of two companies' Trainee Programmes2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Talent Management is a topic gaining more attention among businesses and it is one of the most

important challenges faced by companies worldwide; therefore it should be a top priority for

managers. Literature states that many organisations are not aware of the issue of Talent Retention

and that it is the high performers who are the ones end up leaving. Due to that the generation

Millennials are considered to be a generation with talent and the education needed to take over

and become the next generation of leaders, it is important to take advantage of them as

    opportunities and factors for success.

One opportunity for companies to both attract talents and thereafter retain them is through

conducting trainee programmes, however, to successfully execute these programmes, resources in

terms of money, time and efforts are required. Therefore, in order to achieve the best possible

return on the resources invested is it crucial to be able to retain the talents after them finishing

the trainee programme. In order to answer our research question and fulfil our purpose we have

done a multiple case study and conducted in-depth interviews to gather qualitative data. Our

sample group consisted of eight representatives, two managers and six trainees, working at the

two companies sampled. Consequently, our findings show that even without having an outlined

retention plan, companies can be successful within Talent Retention. Moreover, this research

acknowledge that good leadership, presence of Psychological Ownership and opportunities for

challenges and development are the most important factors leading to talents wanting to stay

within the company, after participating in the company’s trainee programme.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how social workers reason about children's participation in decision-making. The study is qualitative, with, semi-structured interviews being conducted with eleven social workers, in different municipalities, working with children assessments. The study, which has an inductive approach, has been written from a social constructionist perspective. Analysis of the interviews was conducted in the style of a thematic analysis, where three themes were central. The first theme, flexibility, is about how social workers adapt to the child, the purpose of the meeting and the child’s age. This means that they must be flexible in how they inform and be informed. The second theme, relationship, is about how the social workers look at the relationship’s importance to children’s participation. Some social workers believe that the relationship is of great importance, while others haven’t put much emphasis on it. The last theme, influencing factors, is about how children’s opportunity to participate in decision-making has increased over time and factors that may affect. All themes are about social workers perspective on children’s participation and how it differs from case to case in various meetings with children.

Functioning after stroke: An application of the International Classification of Functioning,Disability and Health (ICF)2010Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Objective. The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the biopsychosocial consequences after stroke and test the validity of the ICF Core Sets for Stroke during one year post-stroke.

Material and Methods. Studies I, II and III were based on data from a prospective cohort study with 120 stroke survivors who were recruited at admission to stroke units in western Sweden and were followed-up at six weeks, three months and one year after stroke event. Repeated assessments were done through face-to-face interviews consisting of a battery of questions based on the Stroke ICF Core Set (59 categories of Body Functions, 59 of Activities and Participation and 37 of Environmental Factors) and several questionnaires (EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D), Stroke Impact Scale (SIS), Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 (SF-36), Self administered Comorbidity Questionnaire (SCQ), information on health care and social services utilization and spouse support). Study IV was based on data from the multi-center cross-sectional validation study of the Stroke ICF Core Set with 757 stroke survivors from China, Germany, Italy and Sweden.

Results. Study I: A total of 28 of 59 ICF categories of Body Functions and a total of 41 of 59 categories of Activities and Participation were significant problems for stroke survivors at six weeks and three months. These categories showed a good discriminative ability to distinguish between independent (≤ 2 on modified Ranking Scale (mRS)) and dependent (> 2 on mRS) stroke survivors. Study II: Most stroke survivors felt satisfied with their stroke care and rehabilitation during three months post-stroke. Frequently perceived environmental facilitators could be documented with eleven of 37 ICF categories of Environmental Factors. Only physical geography, such as hills, was a common perceived barrier. Study III: Independent factors of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) varied over time. Almost all variance in HRQoL was explained by categories within Body Functions and within Activities and Participation during the first three months, while at one year only half of the variance could be explained by categories within either Body Functions or Environmental Factors. Problems with personal and energy functions, as well as limited recreational activities, were recurringly associated with poorer HRQoL. Study IV: It was possible to integrate ICF categories of Body Functions and Structures, Activities and Participation into a cross-cultural measurement with good reliability providing summary scores of the overall functioning of stroke survivors. However, the five-point ICF qualifier scale was not consistently applicable.

Conclusions. The results of the present thesis showed that the ICF,particularly the ICF Core Set for Stroke, was a valid and practical tool for documenting the multi-faceted biopsychosocial problems and consequences after stroke structured with one common terminology throughout the long chain of care and rehabilitation. The opportunity to integrate ICF categories of Body Functions and Structures, Activities and Participation into a measurement provides new possibilities for monitoring, following-up and comparing overall functioning after stroke.

Quality indicators and their regular use in clinical practice – results from a survey among users of two cardiovascular National Registries in Sweden2018In: International Journal for Quality in Health Care, ISSN 1353-4505, E-ISSN 1464-3677, Vol. 30, no 10, p. 786-792Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To examine the regular use of quality indicators from Swedish cardiovascular National Quality Registries (NQRs) by clinical staff; particularly differences in use between the two NQRs and between nurses and physicians.

    Design: Cross-sectional online survey study.

Setting: Two Swedish cardiovascular NQRs: a) Swedish Heart Failure Registry and b) Swedeheart.

Participants: Clinicians (n=185; 70% nurses, 26% physicians) via the NQRs’ email networks.

Main outcome measures: Frequency of NQR use for a) producing healthcare activity statistics; b) comparing results between similar departments; c) sharing results with colleagues; d) identifying areas for quality improvement (QI); e) surveilling the impact of QI efforts; f) monitoring effects of implementation of new treatment methods; g) doing research; h) educating and informing healthcare professionals and patients.

Results: Median use of NQRs was ten times a year (25th and 75th percentiles range: 3 – 23 times/year). Quality indicators from the NQRs were used mainly for producing healthcare activity statistics. Median use of Swedeheart was six times greater than SwedeHF (p<0.000). Physicians used the NQRs more than twice as often as nurses (18 vs. 7.5 times/year; p<0.000) and perceived NQR work more often as meaningful. Around twice as many Swedeheart users had the role to participate in data analysis and in QI efforts compared to SwedeHF users.

Conclusions: Most respondents used quality indicators from the two cardiovascular NQRs infrequently (< 3 times/year). The results indicate that linking registration of quality indicators to using them for QI activities increases their routine use and makes them meaningful tools for professionals.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To investigate the possibility of constructing a multiprofessional cross-cultural measure of functioning after stroke across categories of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Method: Data on 757 stroke survivors from China, Germany, Italy, and Sweden, including ratings of 15 categories from the Brief ICF Core Set for stroke, were analyzed using the Rasch model. Unidimensionality, reliability, fit of the ICF categories to the model, ordering of response options of the ICF qualifier, and presence of differential item functioning (DIF) were studied. Results: Of the 15 ICF categories, response options for 7 categories were collapsed, 5 categories were deleted due to misfit, and 4 ICF categories showed DIF for country and were accordingly split into country-specific categories. The proposed final clinical measure consists of 20 ICF categories (6 categories were country-common) with an overall fit statistic of χ2180 = 184.87, P = .386, and a person separation index of r = 0.72, which indicates good reliability. Based on an individual's functioning after stroke, the ratings across the different ICF categories can be summed on an interval scale ranging from 0 to 100. Conclusion: A construction of a cross-cultural clinical measure after stroke based on ICF categories across body functions, structures, and activities and participation was possible. With this kind of clinical measure, stroke survivors' functional levels can be compared even across countries. Despite the promising results, further studies are necessary to develop definitive measures based on ICF categories.

Factors Associated With Health-Related Quality of Life After Stroke: A 1-Year Prospective Cohort Study2012In: Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, ISSN 1545-9683, E-ISSN 1552-6844, Vol. 26, no 3, p. 266-274Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background. In line with patient-centered health care, it is necessary to understand patients’ perceptions of health. How stroke survivors perceive their health at different time points after stroke and which factors are associated with these feelings provide important information about relevant rehabilitation targets. Objective. This study aimed to identify the independent factors of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) from a biopsychosocial perspective using the methods of multivariate regression at 3 different time points poststroke. Methods. Included in the study were 99 patients from stroke units with diagnosed first-ever stroke. At admission and at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year poststroke, HRQoL was assessed using the EuroQoL-5D Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-5D VAS). Consequences in Body Functions and Activities and Participation, and Environmental Factors were documented using 155 categories of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Core Set for Stroke. Results. For a period of 1 year, problems with recreation and leisure, personality functions, energy and drive functions, and gait pattern functions were repeatedly associated with worse HRQoL. Whereas Body Functions and Activities and Participation explained more than three-fourths of the variances of HRQoL at 6 weeks and 3 months (R 2 = 0.80-0.93), the variation at 1 year was best explained by either Body Functions or Environmental Factors (R 2 = 0.51). Conclusions. The results indicate the importance of Body Functions and Activities and Participation (mainly personality functions and recreation and leisure) on HRQoL within 3 months poststroke, but increased impact of Environmental Factors on HRQoL at 1 year.

Facilitators and barriers of stroke survivors in the earlypost-stroke phase.2009In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 31, no 19, p. 1584-1591Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. To identify facilitators and barriers among persons with first-ever stroke discharged to the home in the first 3 months post-stroke by means of ICF categories.

Method. Stroke survivors were interviewed using semi-structured questions based on the ICF categories of Environmental factors of the Comprehensive ICF Core Set for Stroke (extended version) at 6 weeks and at 3 months post-stroke.

Results. The study sample exists of 67 stroke survivors with an average age of 71 years (51% women). Eleven environmental factors from the ICF chapters ‘support and relationship’, ‘products and technology’ and ‘services, systems and policies’ were experienced to be facilitators and only ‘physical geography’ was experienced as a barrier by 50% or more of the participants in the study.

Conclusions. It was possible to document facilitators and barriers among stroke survivors in a structured way using ICF categories. The high number of experienced facilitators gives an idea of how well stroke care functions in Sweden. There is a great need for further studies examining environmental factors in the post-stroke phase.

Functioning of stroke survivors - a validation of the ICF core set for stroke in Sweden.2010In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 32, no 7, p. 551-559Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. To validate the body functions and activities and participation part of the extended International Classification ofFunctioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) core set for stroke with a Swedish population in the first 3 months post-stroke.

Method. At 6 weeks and at 3 months post-stroke, stroke survivors were evaluated by 59 ICF categories of body functions, 59 categories of activities and participation from the stroke ICF core set (extended version).

Results. The study sample included 99 stroke survivors (54% women) with an average age of 72 years. Statistical significantproblems were identified in 28 ICF categories of body functions and in 41 ICF categories of activities and participation atboth time points, at 6 weeks and at 3 months. About 17 ICF categories were reported as problems in independent (i.e. modified Rankin Scale (mRS)2) and about 34 categories in dependent (i.e. mRS42) stroke survivors.

Conclusions. The results suggest a possible reduction of the stroke ICF core set from 59 to 28 categories of body functionsand from 59 to 41 categories of activities and participation. Hence, feasibility of the core set for multiprofessional assessment increases and the core set might find more integration in clinical practice. The number of problems in mobility and self-care mainly distinguished between independent and dependent stroke survivors.

In-depth comparison of two quality improvement collaboratives from different healthcare areas based on registry data - Possible factors contributing to sustained improvement in outcomes beyond the project time2019In: Implementation Science, ISSN 1748-5908, E-ISSN 1748-5908, Vol. 14, no 1, article id 74Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Quality improvement collaboratives (QICs) are widely used to improve healthcare, but there are few studies of long-term sustained improved outcomes, and inconsistent evidence about what factors contribute to success. The aim of the study was to open the black box of QICs and compare characteristics and activities in detail of two differing QICs in relation to their changed outcomes from baseline and the following 3 years.

Methods: Final reports of two QICs - one on heart failure care with five teams, and one on osteoarthritis care with seven teams, including detailed descriptions of improvement projects from each QIC's team, were analysed and coded by 18 QIC characteristics and four team characteristics. Goal variables from each team routinely collected within the Swedish Heart Failure Registry (SwedeHF) and the Better Management of Patients with OsteoArthritis Registry (BOA) at year 2013 (baseline), 2014, 2015 and 2016 were analysed with univariate statistics.

Results: The two QICs differed greatly in design. The SwedeHF-QIC involved eight experts and ran for 12 months, whereas the BOA-QIC engaged three experts and ran for 6 months. There were about twice as many activities in the SwedeHF-QIC as in the BOA-QIC and they ranged from standardisation of team coordination to better information and structured follow-ups. The outcome results were heterogeneous within teams and across teams and QICs. Both QICs were highly appreciated by the participants and contributed to their learning, e.g. of improvement methods; however, several teams had already reached goal values when the QICs were launched in 2013.

Conclusions: Even though many QI activities were carried out, it was difficult to see sustained improvements on outcomes. Outcomes as specific measurable aspects of care in need of improvement should be chosen carefully. Activities focusing on adherence to standard care programmes and on increased follow-up of patients seemed to lead to more long-lasting improvements. Although earlier studies showed that data follow-up and measurement skills as well as well-functioning data warehouses contribute to sustained improvements, the present registries' functionality and QICs at this time did not support those aspects sufficiently. Further studies on QICs and their impact on improvement beyond the project time should investigate the effect of those elements in particular.
