Coping with illness-related problems in persons with progressive muscular diseases: the Swedish version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire.2002In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 16, no 4, p. 368-375Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One of the most widely used self-assessment inventories of coping is the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The aims of the study were to describe coping with illness-related problems in persons with muscular diseases and to investigate the influence of demographic variables. Also, the reliability of the Swedish version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire was to be evaluated. Forty-four persons with muscular dystrophy and 32 persons with postpolio syndrome, along with a comparison group of 214 students, completed the questionnaire. The findings of this study show that there are some different coping patterns in students as compared with persons with chronic disease. The coping strategy Distancing was used more and the strategy Accepting Responsibility used less frequently in the chronic disease groups and may be an expression of the inevitable physical limitations caused by the progressiveness of muscular dystrophy and postpolio syndrome. Furthermore, persons with muscular dystrophy also used less problem-focused coping in the form of Confrontive Coping and Planful Problem Solving when compared with the postpolio and student groups. In addition, women in the three groups employed the strategy of Seeking Social Support more often than did men. Regarding the psychometric properties of the Swedish version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire, internal consistency was acceptable for the total score, but lower and not acceptable for several of the subscales. In the student group, but not in the chronic disease groups, there were low correlations between subscales, which indicate discriminative ability. More research is necessary to further investigate the reliability and validity of the Swedish version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire before this instrument can be used routinely to assess coping patterns in patients with chronic disease.

PSQS – Power Supply Quality Simulator2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Kitron had wishes to be able to test and measure how disturbance affects their vehicle electronic units before they have been verified by SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden in Borås. This work started with the writing of a demand specification together with Kitron for a product PSQS, Power Supply Quality Simulator, which can generate some test pulses according to a standard for electronic units to Volvos vehicles. A design proposal was developed with the help the demand specification and was verified with the help of simulations. All electric schematics was designed with the guide of the design proposal. The pulses realized in the works of this thesis are those which Kitron experienced that they have a need to test in their own premises and which are possible to generate with the means available. All work took place at Kitron in Jönköping, the restriction of the work has been the cost of components not to be to high as well as the finished product shall be easily managed. This thesis work resulted in a unit which is possible to produce a number of disturbances on the voltage feed to a unit under test. Some pulses have not been completely correct according to Volvos standard. There are large possibilities to further develop PSQS to a unit that follows Volvos standard and even other vehicle producer’s standards.

Åtgärder mot koncernintern skatteplanering genom ränteupplägg2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Prepaid dental care - a questionnaire on dentalstaff attitudes and contract management

    Abstract

Background: In order to get young people to maintain a continued regular contact with dental care, after they are regarded as paying adults, prepaid dental care was introduced in Västra Götaland in 2007. Prepaid dental care is a payment model in which patients pay a specific amount for their dental care over a three-year period, monthly or annually. Since prepaid dental care is a major part of the daily work in public dental care, it is important to examine the dental staff's attitudes to this payment model.  Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the dental staff's handling of prepaid dental care and their attitudes regarding this payment model in the Public Dental Service in Region Kalmar County. Method: A questionnaire study based on a quantitative approach with certain issues analysed by qualitative method was performed. Surveys were sent to all employees at all 18 general dental clinics belonging to Region Kalmar County Public dental service. In total 133 employees answered the questionnaire.  Result: Respondents generally had a positive view on prepaid dental care. Regarded as positive was for example the opportunity of regular individualized treatment independent of costs. The main drawback, according to the respondents, was that patients who do not have prepaid dental care are not given any priority for being summoned for examination. Most respondents offer contracts to the majority of the patients and regardless of the price class. Conclusion: Prepaid dental care was considered positive, favouring both the clinic and the patients who chose this payment model. Although it should be taken into consideration that patients without prepaid dental care are not prioritised to be summoned for treatment compared to patients with prepaid dental care. The majority of the respondents are in agreement that prepaid dental care can impair the care situation of patients without contract.

Improving the Order Receiving Process: Case Study: Ekmans AB2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of the thesis is to identify problems cooperating departments suffer from, create solutions and discover ways to successfully implement the changes. A case study of Ekmans AB has been conducted to accomplish this.

    Background

In today’s business world competition is fiercer than ever. New companies enter the market and new technologies and working methods are introduced which requires the companies to work proactivelyto foresee opportunities. But even if the companies are aware of all these external factors, they also need to look internally to see what they can improve and make more efficient in order to stay competitive. Therefore, it is important for companies to be ready to change both structure and culture to be more efficient.

    Method

The method is based on a qualitative approach with semi-structuredi nterviews. A total of 20 interviews were conducted. The interviewees possess different positions within the company, ranging from the top management down through the organizational hierarchy.

    Conclusion

The study shows that problems can arise from miscommunication, outdated ways of handling order receiving and a poorly chosen organizational structure. To solve these problems companies has to realize the importance of change. When modification the organizationa company has to take the organizational culture into consideration. It is important that the employees feel that they are a part of the change instead of just seeing it from sideline. Moreover, the management has to make sure they are thoroughly in their work regarding change; they have to follow up each alteration to make sure that it is actually implemented. Moreover, standardization is the key for organizations wishing improve and become more efficient. The result of the study showed that it is first when these criterions are fulfilled that the company can expect to successfully implement changes.

Family Firms and Clean Technologies: A qualitative study exploring how a firm’s ownership status influences implementation of clean technologies2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Background: Sustainability practices have become a crucial factor for firms since there are external and internal pressures that expect firms to act environmentally friendly. Especially within organizations that are owned by family, being sustainable enables them to pass their firm in a good condition to the next generation. One way firms can be sustainable is through adopting clean technology strategy as it can provide both environmental and economic benefits to firms. Being sustainable and having the ability to implement clean technology requires a long-term vision or long-term orientation (LTO); a characteristic often associated with family-controlled businesses (FCBs).

Purpose: The purpose is to examine the adoption of clean technology within family-controlled firms (FCBs) and non-family-controlled firms (Non-FCBs). The aim is to explore if there are certain characteristics of FCBs that facilitate implementation of clean technologies.

Method: This research is based on qualitative research method with an abductive approach and interpretivism philosophy. The primary data is collected through semi-structured interviews with four companies of which three are family-controlled businesses and one is a non-family- controlled business.

Conclusion: FCBs are more inclined to invest in clean technologies. The extent to which a company does or does not implement clean technologies depends not only on the institutional values of an organization but also how deeply one or more of the three LTO dimensions are implanted in those values.

LCA-SIMULERING FÖR EN MODULBYGGNAD GENOM FYRA OLIKA LIVSCYKLER2019Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: There is a severe housing shortage in Sweden, with a deficiency of schools and preschools. At the same time, carbon dioxide emission is measuring higher than ever and the realization of environmental crisis is clear. The building sector is responsible a high percentage of carbon dioxide emissions. Calculation for the climate impact can be implemented through life cycle assessment (LCA), directives are requested on how to build through an LCA perspective. The study investigates modular buildings that constitute an efficient and flexible way of managing the building shortage. The aim of this research was to get answers from an ecologically sustainable perspective to what provides more advantageous to process modules when the time- limited building permit expires and a module is needed somewhere else, with or without extra isolation.

Method: A quantitative methodology was used to accomplish the aim. The climate impact of four different types of lifecycles simulates by using the software Anavitor. Other methods used for data acquisition was document analysis, calculation of specific energy use and transmission loss.

Findings: The results present advantageous choices for stakeholders to pick after the time-limited building permits expire and a new module is demanded at another place. The study shows that less carbon dioxide emission is produced when reusing the module rather than demolish and produce a new module. Energy savings can be made which reduces the total climate impact of the module that are additionally insulated.

Implications: The conclusion the group could deduct was that the production and manufacturing stage has a significant impact on the total climate impact that a renovation and non-manufacturing scenario is always more advantageous. By adding additionell isolation savings on total carbon dioxide emission can be made despite increased material use.

Limitations: The results are limited to a life cycle assessment based on a module’s envelope as the interior and technical equipment is the same for all scenarios. The study was based on a standard module in which the equipment has no effect on the results. The result was initially specific, but with the help of calculation of the breakpoint for independent transport distances, a general validity could be given.

Arbetsmotivationens påverkan på kvaliteten på flerbostadshus2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Several studies show that work motivation in a workplace affects the individual's ability to perform and this may result in construction errors such as unnecessary economical costs and additional work hours. The aim of this study is to investigate the link between construction errors and work motivation as well as its impact on the quality of an apartment building. Method: To complete the objective of this study literature studies, questionnaires and interviews were conducted. The literature study includes scientific articles, doctoral dissertations and encyclopedias. These are taken from, among other things, the university library databases. The surveys consist of 21 questions based on Herzberg's two-factor theory. The interviews are semi-structured and the questions are based on the results of the survey. Findings: The results show that the link between work motivation and construction errors depends on knowledge, experience, commitment, stress and time shortage, communication, chord, salary, benefits and lack of leadership. In the construction companies that were included in this study, there is a lack of motivation among professionals, and the reasons for this are mainly due to benefits from the company and chord wages. The building-related consequences that result from motivation decline prove to be economical and time-consuming. The economic consequences show huge error costs. The time suggests that errors and shortcomings in homes lead to additional working hours in order to correct the errors that occurred during the production period. Restrictions: The study includes ongoing housing projects in Jönköping where supervisors and occupational workers are current. Question one is generally answered when it is not considered corporate, as is the last question. Issue two, on the other hand, only applies to these investigated projects.

Investigation of the tensile strength in pearlitic lamellar graphite iron2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Lamellar cast iron is a very important technical alloy and the most used material in the casting production especially in the automotive industry which is the major customer. There are many factors such as chemical composition, metallurgical condition and melt treatment that are effecting on the size, morphology and distribution of microstructure features of the lamella graphite iron which in turn this features effecting the material’s mechanical properties and tensile behaviour under static load.

In the past few years many researchers have been done different investigation within improvement of mechanical behaviour in the lamellar graphite iron. Controlling the solidification rate, changing the chemical composition and using different carbon content in the melt are some of the research that have been carried out in last years. Swerea/ Swecast in Jönköping has been involved in many of previous researches. The present work is part of the previous investigation that have been carried out in the Swecast/Swerea.

The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of different cooling rate on the microstructure parameters and furthermore how this parameters influence the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) in the lamellar graphite iron. To increase the understanding of cooling rates effect on the material properties, in this work the chemical composition and carbon content was equal in the all of the samples.

The collected data that are based on the morphological data of the solidification structure (dendritic network, eutectic cells) and the eutectoid transformation structure (pearlite) have been correlated to the measured tensile strength. The final purpose of this work was to develop a generic model for the prediction of the tensile strength in lamellar graphite iron which has been presented in the result chapters.

The question that have been answered in this work based on the following points.

 How the cooling rate influences the development of primary austenite phase and those effect on the UTS?

 How the pearlite interlamellar spacing develops during the different cooling rate and influencing the UTS?

 How the different cooling rates influence the size and amount of the eutectic cell and according to this how the UTS varies?

The work has been carried out according to the time plane (see appendix 6) and the result of this work showed that cooling rate has an essential effect on the microstructure features. By controlling the cooling rate, the material strength improves significantly.

Effect of SiC particle size and heat-treatment on microhardness and corrosion resistance of NiP electrodeposited coatings2018In: Journal of Alloys and Compounds, ISSN 0925-8388, E-ISSN 1873-4669, Vol. 769, p. 1080-1087Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Electrodeposition of NiP composite coatings with nano and sub-micron sized SiC has been carried out to investigate the possibility of replacing hard chromium coatings. The composition and structure of the coatings were evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, respectively. Microhardness was measured by Vickers indentation and polarization measurements were carried out to study the corrosion behavior of the coatings. The results showed that submicron particles can be codeposited with a higher content as compared to nano sized ones. However, even if a smaller amount of the nano-sized SiC particles are incorporated in the coating, the contribution to an increasing microhardness was comparable with the submicron sized particles, which can be related to the higher density of codeposited particles. SiC particles did not change the anodic polarization behavior of NiP coatings in a 3.5% NaCl solution. Finally, the effect of heat-treatment on the coatings properties at 400 °C for 1 h was studied to investigate the contribution of particles and heat-treatment on hardness and corrosion properties. It was found that the heat-treatment doubled the microhardness and changed the anodic polarization behavior of the coatings from passive to active with respect to the as-plated conditions.

Effect of high-pressure torsion on microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of cast pure Mg2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

High-pressure torsion (HPT) processing was applied to cast pure Mg pieces and its effects on microstructure, hardness and tensile properties as well as corrosion resistance were evaluated. The microstructure of the processed samples was examined by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and the mechanical properties were determined by microhardness and tensile tests. Corrosion resistance of the samples was studied via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results showed that HPT refined the grain size of Mg very effectively from millimeters in the cast structure to a few micrometers homogeneously through the thickness and created a basal texture on the surface. One or five turns of HPT produced no significant difference in the grain size of the processed Mg but the hardness was a maximum after one turn. The yield strength of the cast Mg was increased by seven times whereas the corrosion resistance was not affected by the HPT processing.

    Abstract [en]

High-pressure torsion (HPT) processing was applied to cast pure magnesium, and the effects of the deformation on the microstructure, hardness, tensile properties and corrosion resistance were evaluated. The microstructures of the processed samples were examined by electron backscatter diffraction, and the mechanical properties were determined by Vickers hardness and tensile testing. The corrosion resistance was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results show that HPT processing effectively refines the grain size of Mg from millimeters in the cast structure to a few micrometers after processing and also creates a basal texture on the surface. It was found that one or five turns of HPT produced no significant difference in the grain size of the processed Mg and the hardness was a maximum after one turn due to recovery in some grains. Measurements showed that the yield strength of the cast Mg increased by about seven times whereas the corrosion resistance was not significantly affected by the HPT processing.

Electrodeposition of Ni high P composite coatings containing nano and submicro ceramic particles2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, electrodeposition of Ni-P composite coatings has been carried out to investigate the possibility of replacing hard chromium coatings. Therefore, electrodeposition of Ni-P based composite coating with different SiC particle size (50 nm, 100 nm and 500 nm) or B4C (500 nm) was performed. The coating’s composition was evaluated by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness of the coatings was measured by Vickers indentor and polarization measurements were carried out to study the corrosion behavior of the coatings. The results showed that B4C particles can codeposit in higher percent respect to SiC ones. Ceramic particles increased microhardness of Ni-P coatings to 700HV0.01. The polarization behavior of all the coatings in 3.5% NaCl was similar in as plated state proving that particles did not hindered the passive behaviour. Finally, the effect of heat-treatment (at 400 ºC for 1 hour) on the coating’s properties was studied to compare the contribution of particles and heat-treatment on mechanical and corrosion properties of the coatings. Heat-treatment increased the coating’s microhardness and changed the anodic polarization behavior of the coatings respect to the as plated conditions.

The effects of additives, particles load and current density on codeposition of SiC particles in NiP nanocomposite coatings2019In: Coatings, ISSN 2079-6412, Vol. 9, no 9, article id 554Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, electrodeposition of NiP composite coatings with the addition of SiC 100 nm was carried out on low carbon steel studying the effect of additives (sodium dodecyl sulfate, saccharin), particles load (10 or 20 g/L) and current density (1, 2 and 4 A/dm2). As a benchmark, coatings from an additive-free bath were also deposited, despite additives being essential for a good quality of the coatings. The coating's morphology and composition were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). It was shown that by addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), pure NiP coating with a higher P content was achieved, and their morphology changed to nodular. SDS also reduced the codeposited fraction of SiC particles, while saccharin increased it. SiC loading and current density had less impact respect to the additives on codeposition of SiC particles. Finally, the microhardness of NiP coatings did not increase linearly by codeposition of SiC particles.

    Abstract [en]

Background: How a person chooses to live the last time in life, as well as how the person decides to die has a major impact on their relatives. The goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of life for both patient and relatives. Nowadays relatives are expected to take the role as a caregiver. Purpose: The purpose of the literature review was to describe the relatives’ experiences of palliative home care. Method: A qualitative literature review with an inductive approach was based on 14 scientific articles. The article search was made in CINAHL and Medline. Result: The result was presented in seven sub themes that generated three main themes; To adopt a healthcare role, Restrictions in everyday life and Need for Support. Relatives saw their role as a matter of necessity despite the changes that followed. Insufficiency, isolation and loneliness were feelings that emerged. A well-established relation with home care professionals reduced these feelings. Conclusion: The need for support, good relations, information, safety and participating were factors that affected the experience of palliative home care. Home nursing staff enabled this by applying family-focused nursing care.

    Abstract

Problem: Today's business environment is characterized by changing customer demands, increasing cost pressures on retailers, shorter product life cycles and products becoming obsolete shortly after their introduction. The above factors make it difficult for electronics retailers to balance the costs of dealing with excessive inventory and not be out of stock. To be competitive, retailers should delay some of their activities until customer demand becomes visible. This brings us to the phenomenon of postponement. Electronics market in Sweden faces continuous growth, although at a declining rate. This is indicative of a saturation that this sector, as a whole, is approaching to. The above problems are due to the speculative approaches and standardized products policies that are in practice. Loss of sales and customers result from these practices. The current study analyses the importance of postponement strategy and the benefits it offers. This study also tries to explore the potential solutions for retailers that postponement may relate to.

Purpose: The scope of this study is to identify possible postponement strategies needed for SIBA.

Method: A case study approach has been taken. The choice of the method is qualitative with an inductive approach. This involved personal communications during interviews with the managers of SIBA, using semi structured questions to collect data.

Results: The concepts of postponement, supply chain flexibility, agility and customer order decoupling points (CODP) are closely related to one another and it has been shown that as the depth of postponement increase from right to left in the CODP continuum, the CODP changes its position, moving along the CODP continuum from right to left and towards the upstream. With this movement, the flexibility and agility in the chain increases. Our finds suggest that postponement is rather underutilized and that wastes (by way of lost sales and customers, obsolete inventory costs and storage costs) in the retailing process occur due to speculative approaches in application at the retail level. We have suggested logistics postponement for two out of three product categories and enumerated the ensuing benefits that the retailer can derive by way of enhanced flexibility, agility and reductions in wastages and satisfied customers.

Challenges in the initial stage of internationalization: A study of Swedish and Bangladeshi SMEs2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Internationalization is a topic of much importance because of its complex nature. In this study, the focus is on the initial challenges that the SMEs have to face when they go international. The literature suggests that, due to the simple structure and comparatively weaker financial base of SMEs, they face many hurdles when entering into a foreign market. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate what challenges a Swedish and a Balangedishi SME are faced with in the initial stage of the internationalization process.

We have used a qualitative method and collected empirical data through interviews. For the analysis, we use a theoretical framework that emphasizes the Uppsala Internationali-zation Model. Our main results show that the SMEs suffer because of the challenges to collect appropriate information and to reduce cultural differences.

With this thesis we hope to contribute with a new understanding of challenges that can help the SME to better cope with challenges in practice when involving in internationalization.

Engelskundervisning genom skönlitterära texter i åk 4–6: Skönlitterära texters för- och nackdelar i engelskundervisningen i åk 4–62018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

"Man drar åt samma håll": En kvalitativ studie om samverkan kring prostitution i en mellanstor svensk kommun2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to increase insight into the collaboration of different organisations that work against prostitution in a Swedish municipality. With this purpose as a basis, four research questions were formulated: How do different organisations working against prostitution in the municipality collaborate? Which factors promote collaboration between these organisations? Which factors inhibit collaboration between these organisations? What areas of improvement exist in regards to collaboration? The analysis is qualitative and based on semi-structured interviews with six organisations that work against prostitution in different ways. The interviewed organisations include government-controlled organisations as well as non-governmental organisations. In this study, the empirical data has been analysed with a deductive approach based on a set of themes. These themes are formed with the purpose and issue of this study in mind. The themes are “how different organisations in the municipality describe the collaborative work”, “factors promoting collaboration”, “factors inhibiting collaboration” and “areas of improvement”.

Key words: collaboration, prostitution, promoting factors, inhibiting factors, areas of improvement

Experiences of being parents of young adults living with recessive limb-girdle muscular dystrophy from a salutogenic perspective2017In: Neuromuscular Disorders, ISSN 0960-8966, E-ISSN 1873-2364, Vol. 27, no 6, p. 585-595Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recessive limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD2) involve progressive muscle weakness. Parental support is important for young adults living with LGMD2, but no study has been identified focusing on the parents' experiences. The salutogenic perspective concentrates on how daily life is comprehended, managed and found meaningful, i.e. the person's sense of coherence. The aim of this study was to describe, from a salutogenic perspective, experiences of being parents of young adults living with LGMD2. Nineteen participants were included. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and the self-administrated 13-item sense of coherence questionnaire. Interview data were analysed with content analysis and related to self-rated sense of coherence. The result shows experiences of being influenced, not only by thoughts and emotions connected to the disease but also by caregiving duties and the young adults' well-being. Simultaneously, difficulty in fully grasping the disease was expressed and uncertainty about progression created worries about future management. Trying their best to support their young adults to experience well-being and to live fulfilled lives, the importance of having a social network, support from concerned professionals and eventually access to personal assistance was emphasized. The need to have meaningful pursuits of one's own was also described. The median sense of coherence score was 68 (range 53–86). Those who scored high (≥68) described satisfaction with social network, external support provided, work and leisure activities to a greater extent than those who scored low (<68). The result shows that the young adults' disease has a major impact on the parents' lives. Assessment of how the parents comprehend, manage and find meaning in everyday life may highlight support needed to promote their health.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis seeks to investigate how an agreed written form requirement is met in an electronic environment. Swedish Contract law is applied since Sweden lack specific regulation for electronically closed agreements. Since contractual freedom prevails in Swedish law, it is up to the parties themselves to decide if the formal requirements to be applied.

In order to assess whether the written requirement is fulfilled in the electronic environment, a purpose-oriented analysis should be made. When the purpose of why a written form requirement applies has been clarified, the analysis continues to assess whether the objective can be achieved with the modern form of communication. The method is called functional equivalence and means that when an electronic media fulfill the same functions as the paper medium so will the electronic medium as a starting point to give the same legal effect as if it were the case of a written paper document. This is in accordance with the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Commerce.

The international debate on electronic contracting are way ahead of Sweden, therefore, the international regulations DCFR, UNCITRAL, UNIDROIT and CISG had been significant. The traditional handwritten document has for a long timed been having a probative value.

A paper document can be summed up in its constituent elements, security, accessibility and confidentiality. Security is measured by the courts to give it a certain probative value. The probative value is given when only the integrity and traceability can be ensured.

In summary, it can be said that the above criteria gives thus writing its great importance. These criteria are met by the electronic document; therefore, there is nothing to suggest that the writing is not met in the electronic communications media. Finally, the electronic document provides the same high probative value as a paper document.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: A stated problem in the construction industry is to recruit and keep safety officers. The lack of willing and engaged safety officers could result in lower safety at construction sites. The purpose of this report is to examine how the safety officers are currently experiencing their work environment and examine what can be changed to improve the situation.

The aim of this thesis is to find out what can be improved for more people to want to be a safety officer. This is examined by the main question: Why do not more people want to be a safety officer? The main question is answered by two sub-questions:

    • Which difficulties exists in the role as a safety officer?
    • What changes needs to be done to improve the situation?

Method: To reach the aim of the report a case study was performed. The case is Skanska Hus Väst and is limited to the profession safety officers. The method of investigation is interviews and questionnaires, which are qualitatively conducted. The interviews are conducted with the chief safety officers. The chief safety officers can see the broad picture of the situation since they continuously keep contact with all the construction sites in their district. The questionnaires are sent to all the local safety officers in all the districts in the entire region.

Findings: One reason for the lack of engaged safety officers is that they do not receive the necessary respect and response from their coworkers. It makes them feel alone. There is no acceptance for safety work and the time that is needed, which give the safety officers a bad conscience when they are forced to leave their work partner. To improve the situation the safety officer’s must receive more respect from their coworkers. Knowledge and acceptance concerning safety must be improved among all workers on the construction site. The safety officers need to feel that they can, and are allowed to, influence the project.

Implications: To solve the problem the current safety officer’s situation must be improved. If the existing safety officers are pleased they will give a positive picture of the role to their coworkers, the potential new safety officers. The safety officers’ situation can be improved by the points that follows:

    • The safety officers must receive more respect from others in the construction site.
    • The safety officers should advantageously be placed separate from the time plan of the project.
    • The safety officers should be involved in an earlier stage of the project.

Limitations: The report has been limited to only examining the role of the safety officer and their own perspective. The views of safety officers from the perspective of other roles at the construction site has been omitted from the thesis. The report does not investigate how to perform the changes.

Införande av Lean Administration i utfallsprovsprocessen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis concerns implementation of Lean Administration within administrative support-processes. The thesis examines how tools of Lean can contribute to the standardizing of documents and the handling of documents in order to eliminate waste. In addition, quality assurance and higher efficiency are obtained while it is possible to reach a higher capacity for value-adding activities. The empirical findings are based on action research conducted at a trading company where the supporting handling of documents concerning initial samples was studied closely.

The background to this study can be traced to the increased global competition which has brought more companies to work with improvements to a larger extent. More companies have also decided to outsource parts of their operations to be able to focus on their core competencies. As an effect of this trend, different new actors have specialized in other areas than production. When there is no production to make more efficient, these companies have directed their work with improvements to other areas, such as the administration.

The purpose with this thesis is to; based on Lean Administration, give suggestions for a new handling system of documents concerning the support processes for initial samples. The result of this work culminates into a proposal which is presented as a template created in Excel. The template has been created during the work with the thesis and it is built with support from principles and tools from Lean Administration. The Excel template is made to replace current documents in the specific administrative process and by doing that, contribute to standardization and increased efficiency to the work with initial samples. The template also creates options to treat customers’ different needs and it also increases quality through a built-in fail proofing feature.

The template can be considered to be generalized and possible to implement at different companies working with initial samples. However, it may be required to change the graphical layout to company-specific needs.

Towards the end of the writing process thoughts about developing the Excel template to a total quality document was raised. This document could contain all information concerning quality for a specific article. This idea gives opportunity for further work.

Suggestions for further research within Lean Administration are given since there is still a lot to investigate within the field. The way the research was conducted, by viewing the work processes with Lean-glasses, can be generalized and applied to other areas than the processes concerning initial samples.

State of research in reuse of enterprise models: Systematic literature analysis of CAISE, EMMSAD, ICIS and INCOM2012In: Proceedings of the IADIS International Conference on Information Systems, 2012, p. 82-90Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The importance of managing organizational knowledge of enterprises has been recognized for decades. The systematic development and reuse of organizational knowledge is expected to improve the competitiveness of the enterprise. While the practice of “reuse” is common in general computer science there is still a lack of surveys in regard to reuse in enterprise modeling. This document reviews four different papers presented at information systems conferences over the last seven years: CAISE, EMMSAD, ICIS, and INCOM. Our analysis indicates that the majority of research is realized by case studies, theoretical frameworks and mostly on business process modeling aspects of enterprise models.

Challenges for heart failure patients’ self-care systems – analysis of patients’ needs2014In: Procedia Technology - Elsevier, ISSN 2212-0173, E-ISSN 2212-0173, Vol. 16, p. 1256-1264Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Self-care is important for heart failure patients. However, what are the views of patients on their situation when it comes to realizing self-care? The aim of the paper is to investigate the self-care needs of HF patients, by understanding the issues they embrace in their self-care processes. In this paper we make a review of 17 interviews and make a classification of what the needs are for possible information technology support systems. Based on the analysis of these interviews, we identify the diversity of needs in support of activities related to different background conditions and the dynamics of change of learning and changes in the heart failure condition. The contribution of the paper is a framework for understanding the diversity of needs and the specific situations of this group of patients.

Understanding heart failure care as a patient learning process2013In: Procedia Technology, ISSN 2212-0173, Vol. 9, p. 930-939Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper deals with the planning of eHealth systems in the area of chronic care from a patient-centred perspective. The particular area is heart failure (HF) and systems that support patients’ possibilities to be active learners during the care processes. A better understanding of this process is hoped to create a basis for the development of appropriate information systems or information technology (IS/IT) support of learning processes. The objective of this paper is the development of a better understanding of the challenges of chronic illness with special focus on HF. The results are presented as a planning framework that guides the choice and design of ICT-based support systems.

Diversity Management in Higher Education Institutions: Key Motivators2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Problem and Purpose – Diversity management, a subject of increasing interest over the last three decades in the business context, is even more relevant to higher education institutions, where diversity is present both in the supplier and customer side. In addition to general organisational improvements, most of the benefits arguably derived would have a direct impact on the cognitive processes such as problem-solving, creativity and learning, which are the core of the university reason for existence, being a centre for knowledge creation and transfer. However, the existing research covering diversity and its management in this particular organisational setting is very scarce. This paper aims to fill some of this gap. The purpose of this study is to identify the key motivators for ethnic diversity management in higher education institutions and the perceived benefits derived.

Method – The investigation took the form of in-depth structured interviews conducted through e-mail, policy document analysis and website reviews of four selected higher education institutions. Pattern matching (Yin, 1994) was employed as the mode for data analysis.

Findings – Ethnic Diversity Management was present in all units, however, it went beyond just the business case to include social justice view and other aspects. The HEIs studied were found to either manage diversity for purely ethical reasons, be motivated by a combination of moral considerations and perceived performance improvements, or completely culturally embrace diversity in the environment with less designated initiatives of diversity management, dependent on a range of variables present in each institutions related to their perceptions, goals and environment. Hence, both the social justice case and business case were concluded to be strong motivators for diversity management in the higher education context.

Originality/value – The paper highlights various DM initiatives, strategies as well as observed effects, hence solidifying the arguments for recognizing and managing diversity and the link between well managed diversity and performance in various aspects, both in business and higher education context. The study is expected to make a contribution  to knowledge by assisting in providing information on key motivators for DM in HEIs and is intended  to be  an elementary supplement  for scholarly discourse in management science, and particularly DM in the HEI context.

BARRIERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTRONIC COMMERCE: A STUDY OF PAKISTANI ENVIORNMENT2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

E-commerce has flourished in the developed world and is playing an important role in the everyday lives of the people and national economies. The developing nations are far behind in this regard even though their governments have made considerable efforts to encourage e-commerce. This thesis is a study of the environmental factors that act as barriers to the development of e-commerce in Pakistan. It shows the nature and the level of hindrance these environmental factors have caused and there relation to one another. In order to make a national analysis, environmental factors have been stretched to include the government, businesses, consumers, physical infrastructures, social and cultural factors. A qualitative study was conducted via telephonic and written interviews from academic and professional experts, users and non users of e-commerce in Pakistan. The analysis of these interviews revealed that not all of the factors considered as e-commerce barriers for developing nations were present in Pakistan. The relation between different e-commerce barriers was studied and further, additional barriers were also identified. Low literacy rate, traditional economic sector, failure of government to successfully implement e-commerce initiatives and regulations, shortage of electrical supply and low demand for online businesses and the consumer purchasing behaviour of Pakistanis were identified as the main e-commerce barriers.

: Participation in Nigerian ElectionsIndependent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Participation in Nigerian elections is an interesting issue. This study is aimed at comparing the 1999 elections with 2003 elections. There is more participation in elections, organized by the Civilian government than that of the Military government. Nigerians feel freer and secure to participate in elections organized and conducted by the civilian government be-cause it is more democratic than the military government.

The part identification model, and a sociological approach were tested in relation to Nige-rian elections. The Sociological approach influences voter’s decision during elections. Democratic government in Nigeria has much to do for it to be consolidated. The issues of Political Rights and Civil Liberty have to be properly addressed

The Role of Logistics Service Providers in the Logistics Firms' Supply Chain2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Competition amongst companies in the global market has resulted in increased production of goods and services. Enterprises are now faced with the challenges of shipments of raw materials, spare parts from vendors, and the finished goods to consumers. Logistics companies are springing up to tackle transportation and other logistics problems. There are various logistics companies such as logistics intermediaries, carriers and third party logistics service providers in the market which are in one way or the other competing and at the same time cooperating within the supply chain in order to fulfill their assignments to their customers. Third party logistics service providers are experiencing rapid growth because of the advanced demand of services such as the desire to reduce lead time, inventory management, outsourcing, and a host of other functions. Not much has been written on the logistics firms. Besides, most studies on logistics firms and the third-party logistics providers focus more on such aspects like their skills, services, and their relationships with their customers.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the logistics service providers’ roles within the logistics firms’ supply chain by identifying how the expected roles are performed. In the frame of reference, the author searched several books and articles that are relevant within the scope of the thesis topic. Both qualitative and explorative data collection methods are used in the thesis and these involve conducting interviews, and reading the accounts of other people concerning the thesis topic.

The conclusion shows that logistics service providers are able to perform their roles through vertical and horizontal cooperation with other firms and with other logistics firms respectively. Besides, logistics firms do live up to their roles. Carriers and the logistics intermediary now perform more roles than what people think they do, because networks connection and the urge to remain competitive make them to take up value-added services. Third-party logistics service providers add values for their customers through their value-added services in various ways such as time and place utility including tracking and tracing the goods to ensure that they are delivered.

Exploring the governance of IT in SMEs in Småland2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With many research available on IT governance, this research differs from most of them due to its delimitation. The focus of this research lies in the two domains of value creation and performance measurement. Furthermore, the area of research has been small and medium Enterprises located in the area of Småland, Sweden.

Brisebois, Boyd & Shadid (2001) gave us the following definition of IT governance: “How those persons entrusted with governance of an entity will consider IT in their supervision, monitoring, control, and direction of the entity. How IT is applied will have an immense impact on whether the entity will attain its vision, mission, or strategic goal.”

An objective of IT governance is to align the IT resources of an enterprise in a way that it fast-tracks the business priorities of the enterprise and assures that the investments in IT generates business value and that the IT is performing to its expectations.

The research questions and the outcome of this research paper sheds light on the challenges of both value creation and performance measurement within the SMEs, but it also showcases what the driving forces of IT value creation are and which benefits arise from measuring the IT performance within the SMEs.

Through semi-structured interviews with four SMEs, based in the region of Småland, numerous amounts of challenges and driving forces for IT value creation and challenges and benefits to measuring IT performance have been extracted.

Based on the extracted information from the interviews, an analysis and a conclusion have been formed by the authors. In the end, the authors provide their thoughts for suggestions for further work and how all of this contributes to the field of Informatics.

Exploring the Integration of Enterprise Systems Solutions Within A Supply Chian2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Over the decades, as organizations begin to move globally there has been a sporadic flow of information in their supply chain. Competition today is forcing companies to integrate tightly with their suppliers and customers, in order to reduce the time available to flex the supply chain (SC) (Koh S.C, Saad S, Arunachalam S, 2006). The integration of firms and departments and information is getting more and more complicated. Regardless of enterprise system solutions being introduced as “integrated suites” they have failed to accomplish application and supply chain integration (Themistocleous, M. Irani, Z. O‟Keefe, and R. 2001). Therefore, this thesis aims to explore, gain better understanding and to explain the balance that may occur between the challenges and benefits gained from integrating enterprise resource planning and supply chain management. Our topic of interest could be view from both developers and user perspective. Developer/consultant‟s perspective is based on the viewpoint of those involved in and responsible for developing enterprise solutions. User‟s perspective, this perspective gives insight to how the integration process is perceived by organisations actually using the solutions. We chose the User perspective because we consider the user to be the direct beneficiary of whatever outcome is gotten from both the business solutions and its integration. In order to achieve a purposeful thesis. We decided to use an interpretive perspective which focus on exploring and gaining insight into issues of integrating enterprise system solution. We used both the inductive and the deductive approaches in our research. This would be advantageous due to the nature of our research topic, as there is little existing knowledge about the integration of enterprise systems solution within supply chain and there are lots of literatures related to the enterprise system solutions (ERP and SCM) been observed. The inductive approach would guide us to choose one or a few specific interactions to explore in-depth, while the deductive approach would aid us when making an hypothesis, since we would be collecting ideas about previous research and theories in order to guide us and make comparison.Conclusively, we found that the balance between challenges and benefits of ERP and SCM are unequivocal, as the benefits surpass the challenges and the effect of challenges on organisation‟s benefit is that it prolongs the short term benefit.

Determinants of Capital Structure in Family Firms2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Most firms are using optimal combination of equity and debt so as to maximize firms value and the wealth of the shareholders. To achieve all these, firms should be aware of the factors that influence the capital structure decisions.

Previous empirical studies attempted to explain what determines the choice of capital structure in firms. The focus was on firms in general without categorizing family firms and non-family firms. The primary objective of this study is to examine what determines the capital structure of family firms in OECD countries.

Amadeus database was used to obtain the data needed for the statistical analysis. Measures for firm-specific characteristics were calculated based on the previous stud-ies. The study was conducted over a period of 9 years from 2005-2013. Dataset com-prised of 95 family firms resulting in 850 observations.

The results from the study indicate that the capital structure for family firms in OECD countries is influenced by profitability, asset tangibility, growth, size, debt tax shield , non-debt tax shield and liquidity. Both pecking-order theory and trade-off theory explain the capital structure of family firms.

The extent of 'use' necessary for Community Trade Marks: and the relation to the test of reputation2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Article 15(1) of the Community Trade Mark Regulation states that the Community Trade Mark holder has to put the mark into genuine use in the Community within five years from registration. Even though the regulation does not deal with the extent of use necessary, the Joint Statements uphold that genuine use within one country is enough. However, recent case law from national offices have ruled in the opposite direction, resulting in legal uncertainty concerning how much use that is needed. The courts claimed that use within merely one Member State is not use in a substantial part of the Community and therefore not genuine. This paper shows that it is not satisfactory to define genuine use in the Community by way of analogy to the term substantial part of the territory. The latter derives from the test of reputation concerning a different case entirely. Instead, most indicators point towards a market-oriented approach where national frontiers do not matter. Focus should be on the extent of use being made compared to the market concerned in the entire EU. A case-by-case assessment is required, where all relevant circumstances are taken into consideration.
