Living in Danger: Previous violence, socioeconomic position, and mortality risk among women over a 10-year period2014In: Social Work in Public Health, ISSN 1937-1918, Vol. 29, no 2, p. 114-120Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Violence against women has many negative consequences. In this short report we investigate patterns of mortality among women experiencing violence leading to in-patient care in 1992-2005. Issues: Have women who are victims of severe violence an increased mortality risk a) in general? b) by violence? c) by suicide? Does socioeconomic position have any bearing on the mortality risk? Methodology: The study was based on Swedish national registers, where 6,085 women exposed to violence resulting in inpatient care were compared with a non-exposed population sample of 55,016 women. Results: Women of all social strata previously exposed to severe violence and treated in hospital had a highly increased risk of premature death from all-cause mortality, violence or suicide. Conclusions: Women previously exposed to severe violence continue to live a life in danger. There is need for a societal response to support and protect these women against further violence after discharge from hospital.

Sociala konsekvenser av sjukdom - exemplet stroke2013In: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift, ISSN 0037-833X, Vol. 90, no 4, p. 613-629Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Women experiencing severe violence in all social groups suffer long-term negative economic consequences2013In: Journal of Povertry and Social Justice, ISSN 1759-8273, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 61-76Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examined long-term socio-economic patterns among women aged 18–64 who suffered violence leading to inpatient care. Using data from Swedish national registers for 1992–2005, 6,085 such cases were compared to a random population sample of 55,016 women. Women exposed to violence had less paid work, lower income and a higher risk of claiming means-tested income support. Exposure to violence resulted in long-term negative economic consequences for women with all levels of education. Violence against women is thus related to low income and social exclusion – both as a cause and consequence.

Våldutsatta kvinnor drabbas av långsiktiga negativa ekonomiska konsekvenser2013In: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift, ISSN 0037-833X, Vol. 90, no 4, p. 604-612Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The enrollment of nature in tourist information: framing urban nature as "€˜the other"€™2013In: Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and Culture, ISSN 1752-4032, E-ISSN 1752-4040, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 97-112Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is based on the assumption that nature inevitably plays a role in urban placemaking. Today, cities worldwide are engaged in place promotion in which nature is constructed as a commodity to consume. This article explores the enrollment of nature in tourist information with a specific analytical focus on the relationship between nature and culture. Guided by framing theory and citing the case of tourist information in Stockholm, the article empirically demonstrates how nature is enrolled in tourist information and turned into a commodity through three distinct but related frames that, in various ways, construct nature as ‘‘other’’: nature as the familiar other, nature as the exotic other, and pristine nature. The article concludes that the enrollment of nature in city marketing reproduces the modern nature-culture divide, which enables the commodification of nature and helps conceal the environmental consequences of increased urban density.

Syn på arbetsförmåga hos personer med psykiska funktionsnedsättningar: Välfärdsaktörernas tolkning av arbetslinjen2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is qualitatively designed with interview as chosen method, in which the responders consist of seven therapists in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). The aim of the study was to investigate possible differences in risk factors in people when it comes to sex as self-harm and to cut themselves, with the aim of highlighting a possible result to pay attention to self-harm behaviors. The interviews highlighted three main areas that we have chosen to name; the self-harming individual, previous vulnerability and self-harming behavior and self-harming behavior and its function. The self-harming individual is described out of both biological and social factors as well as in the commonly occurring diagnose when it comes to self-harm; 'emotionally unstable personality disorder'. Previous vulnerability and self-harm behavior highlight that vulnerability is a common cause of mental illness and further reports a closer link between vulnerability and to harm through sex. The function of self-harm behavior is about individual reasons for self-harm. The biosocial theory permeates the study and highlights how biological and social factors create the behavior of the individual.

Should schools expect poor physical and mental health, social adjustment, and participation outcomes in students with disability?2015In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 10, no 5, p. 1-23, article id e0126630Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The literature on whether students with disabilities have worse physical and mental health, social adjustment, and participation outcomes when compared to their peers without disabilities is largely inconclusive. While the majority of case control studies showed significantly worse outcomes for students with disabilities; the proportion of variance accounted for is rarely reported. The current study used a population cross-sectional approach to determine the classification ability of commonly used screening and outcome measures in determining the disability status. Furthermore, the study aimed to identify the variables, if any, that best predicted the presence of disability. Results of univariate discriminant function analyses suggest that across the board, the sensitivity of the outcome/screening tools to correctly identify students with a disability was 31.9% higher than the related Positive Predictive Value (PPV). The lower PPV and Positive Likelihood Ratio (LR+) scores suggest that the included measures had limited discriminant ability (17.6% to 40.3%) in accurately identifying students at-risk for further assessment. Results of multivariate analyses suggested that poor health and hyperactivity increased the odds of having a disability about two to three times, while poor close perceived friendship and academic competences predicted disability with roughly the same magnitude. Overall, the findings of the current study highlight the need for researchers and clinicians to familiarize themselves with the psychometric properties of measures, and be cautious in matching the function of the measures with their research and clinical needs.

The personal and contextual contributors to school belongingness among primary school students2015In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 10, no 4Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

School belongingness has gained currency among educators and school health professionals as an important determinant of adolescent health. The current cross-sectional study presents the 15 most significant personal and contextual factors that collectively explain 66.4% (two-thirds) of the variability in 12-year old students' perceptions of belongingness in primary school. The study is part of a larger longitudinal study investigating the factors associated with student adjustment in the transition from primary to secondary school. The study found that girls and students with disabilities had higher school belongingness scores than boys, and their typically developing counterparts respectively; and explained 2.5% of the variability in school belongingness. The majority (47.1% out of 66.4%) of the variability in school belongingness was explained by student personal factors, such as social acceptance, physical appearance competence, coping skills, and social affiliation motivation; followed by parental expectations (3% out of 66.4%), and school-based factors (13.9% out of 66.4%) such as, classroom involvement, task-goal structure, autonomy provision, cultural pluralism, and absence of bullying. Each of the identified contributors of primary school belongingness can be shaped through interventions, system changes, or policy reforms.

Factors associated with primary school teachers' attitudes towards the inclusion of students with disabilities2015In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 10, no 8, p. 1-12, article id e0137002Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Objective

Teachers' attitudes toward inclusion are often based on the practical implementation of inclusive education rather than a specific ideology and understanding of inclusiveness. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with primary school teachers' attitudes towards inclusion of students with all disabilities in regular schools.

    Method

Seventy four primary school teachers participated in a cross-sectional survey conducted in Western Australia. Teachers' attitudes and efficacy toward integration of students with disabilities were measured using the Opinions Relative to Integration of Students with Disabilities scale and Bandura's Teacher Efficacy scale respectively.

    Results

Four teacher attributes-age, gender, teaching self-efficacy and training collectively explained 42% of the variability in teachers' attitude toward including students with disabilities.

    Conclusion

The current study further contributes to the accumulation of knowledge that can unpack the complex pattern of factors that should be considered to promote positive attitudes towards inclusive schools.

    Abstract [en]

BackgroundSocial services do not have registers for monitoring quality. Without knowledge of what interventions the social services provide already exposed groups risk missing follow-up and improvement of care and support.

    Purpose

Improved life situation for individuals in social services addiction care through systematic follow-up. Increase the use of Addiction Severity Index (ASI) to monitor and improve social services. Identify factors that contribute to or hamper the use of ASI.

    Method

A program theory was developed. The improvement work was studied with a mixed method. Quantitative data with time series analysis and qualitative data with thematic analysis. Results was analysed through Model for implementation in different contexts.

    Results

The use of ASI interviews increased but did not reach the targets. The study of the improvement gives few answers to what affects the use of ASI. Stronger coupling of factors with a negative impact on ASI usage than positive impact.

    Conclusion

Improvement in multiple areas increased use of ASI. Improvement can be carried out simultaneously in 13 municipalities in a county. There is interest in simplified ASI interviews, but the trial did not provide evidence to draw conclusions. The study shows factors that affect the use of ASI, but that there is a need for more studies to generalize conclusions.

The struggle for dignity by people with severe functional disabilities2009In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 16, no 4, p. 453-465Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate what strategies people with severe functional disabilities who receive personal assistance in their homes use in their daily life to achieve autonomy, integrity, influence and participation. Qualitative interviews were carried out and subjected to qualitative latent content analysis. The main finding was expressed in terms of six subthemes: trying to keep a private sphere; striving to communicate; searching for possibilities; taking the initiative; striving to gain insight; and using one's temperament. These generated the overall theme: maintaining dignity in close relationships. This study contributes an understanding of the strategies used by people who are dependent on personal assistance. Future efforts in nursing must focus on supporting personal assistants with ethical knowledge and guidance in order that people with severe functional disabilities are empowered to achieve autonomy, integrity, influence and participation in their daily lives.

Diabetes: a cross-cultural interview study of immigrants from Somalia.2007In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 16, no 11C, p. 305-314Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To describe how diabetic immigrants from Somalia experience everyday life in Sweden and how they manage diabetes-related problems, with inclusion of a gender perspective. Background: To treat and care for minority populations successfully, healthcare staff in Sweden must thoroughly understand the illness experiences of different ethnic groups. However, no studies have so far been reported that focus on immigrants from Somalia with diabetes. Design: Descriptive, qualitative interview study with 19 diabetic adults born in Somalia and now living in Sweden. Method: Cross-cultural interviews with the aid of an interpreter. The transcribed interviews were subjected to qualitative latent content analysis, resulting in sub-themes and themes. Results: Four themes emerged: experience of distress in everyday life; everyday life continues as before; comprehensibility gives a feeling of control; and being compliant. A major finding was the variation in how the participants managed the fasting month of Ramadan. Several participants fasted and did not see the diabetes as an obstacle, others did see it as an obstacle or indicated that fasting was not compulsory for a sick person. Conclusions: This study provides healthcare staff with information about how a minority group experience and manage diabetes. The results indicate the importance of considering cultural background, as well as religious traditions such as Ramadan, in diabetes care. They also indicate that men and women differ in their reaction to diabetes and that care should be adapted to this. Relevance for clinical practice: It is important to develop evidence-based guidelines for diabetes care in ethnic groups that are fasting during Ramadan to prevent complications and promote relevant self-care. Further, the prescribed dietary advice must be culturally appropriate.

    Abstract [en]

Elderly care is a sector facing major challenges due to the increased number of elderly people in combination with difficulties regarding recruitment and providing competence. In order to cope with this challenge, a larger municipality in southern Sweden has examined alternative competencies in the area and found that the competence of the assistance nurse can be released by redistributing the duties regarding service. Due to the fact that service duties instead are transferred to a new profession, called Care Services, this may solve a part of providing competence. The current labor market, which is characterized by recruitment difficulties, coincides with the fact that there are people far from the labor market. In our qualitative interview study, we have conducted two individual interviews with individuals who are well aware of the subject and we have also conducted a focus group interview in order to examine how professionals, who work on a daily basis to support people find their place in the labor market, perceive the new profession.

In order to analyze our empirical material we have used three theoretical starting points, which are the Human Relations perspective, the concept of competence as well as objectivity pluralism. In general, the results show that the new profession may be relevant to those persons who for various reasons have not yet found their place in the labor market. There have also been other clear profits combined with certain challenges that need to be taken into account in the future work with the new profession. In the municipality where the study was conducted, the new profession is not yet active and therefore it is challenging to discuss its future function and the implementation.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden is known as a social welfare state, whereby the people who reside in Sweden are entitled to certain public benefits at little or no cost to the individual. Over the past century, Sweden has reshaped its culture, growing from one of the poorest nations in Europe to a flourishing country that others emulate, especially with respect to their family policies. Sweden has developed several foundational family policies that have helped to encourage equality, while establishing a sense of individuality. Sweden has created similar rights for cohabiters/married couples, as well as for same-sex/opposite-sex couples. Parents receive a generous parental leave package, flexible employment choices, and there is a low gender wage gap, while children receive high-quality childcare, free health care, free dental care, free mental health services, and a substantial child welfare program. Swedish family policies encourage both parents to work and to help each other with household and childcare tasks. Despite the public benefits that Sweden provides for mothers, fathers, and children, there is still a need for further improvements regarding policies on domestic violence, poverty, and child welfare. Assessments of Sweden’s family policies are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

At the current time Sweden is, like many other countries, characterized by a variation of different cultural and ethnical groups. Previous research has concluded that there are some difficulties among social workers who work with child protection cases to identify whether something is child abuse or whether it is the upbringing influenced by the culture within the ethnical group. How child protection cases with families of a foreign ethnicity is treated in relation to child protection cases with families of a Swedish ethnicity is therefor of interest – as well as this study’s primary inquiry. To find answers to this, two different vignettes were created where the only significant difference were the families’ names. In the first vignette the name of the family was of Swedish ethnicity, and in the second the name of the family was of foreign ethnicity. The vignettes were sent in the form of web surveys to social workers who work with child protection cases. The surveys were answered by 17 respectively 22 social workers. The result was then presented in the form of descriptive statistics and a thematic analysis. It showed more similarities than differences in the social workers assessments. The few differences that could be identified were found mainly in the way the social workers categorized their concern for the child.

Innovation in Socio-Cultural Context2013Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Innovation - the process of obtaining, understanding, applying, transforming, managing and transferring knowledge - is a result of human collaboration, but it has become an increasingly complex process, with a growing number of interacting parties involved. Lack of innovation is not necessarily caused by lack of technology or lack of will to innovate, but often by social and cultural forces that jeopardize the cognitive processes and prevent potential innovation. This book focuses on the rule of social capital in the process of innovation: the social networks and the norms; values and attitudes (such as trust) of the actors; social capital as both bonding and bridging links between actors; and social capital as a feature at all spatial levels, from the single inventor to the transnational corporation. Contributors from a wide variety of countries and disciplines explore the cultural framework of innovation through empirics, case studies and examination of conceptual and methodological dilemmas.

Spaces of (non)ageing: A discoursive study of inequalities we live by2012Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines processes and practices that make certain social categories real in people’s lives. One of these categories is old age and old people. In contemporary societies that are inundated by images of youth, old age is under attack. Old age does not fit into the contemporary framework of idealised lifestyle and images of perfect people. Thus, the main question addressed in this dissertation concerns spaces of ageing, which are societal arenas in which people are expected and/or allowed to become old.

This study investigates discourses of old age within the context of welfare. It describes actions, statements and attitudes related to old age within the context of the welfare state. This study is based on multiple data that include 121 opinion weekly news magazines articles, social policy observations, and two case studies of a non-governmental and a user-organisation. The method of analysis comprises two approaches to discourse: discourse analysis and analysis of discourses. The study adopts a perspective that highlights the contextual, emotional and unstable character of welfare states that undergo constant processes of change. It notes the process of people production based on instilling in them norms and principles that should govern their lives.

The findings of the study illustrate the lack of spaces of ageing in the welfare state context. People are expected not to grow old, and old age remains a misunderstood phenomenon. Therefore, spaces of (non)ageing are invoked to elaborate on these processes. Spaces of (non)ageing  occur in various societal domains and show what is required to avoid becoming old. Spaces of (non)ageing frame the idea of old age as something terrifying and, in many cases, immoral.

The findings of this study are discussed in relation to the processes and practices of inequality (re)production. The complexity and multiperspectivity of understanding such phenomena are taken into consideration. The study invites a perspective of ‘us’ from which to examine social inequalities, and ‘we’ who think and feel at the same time.

This dissertation is written from a perspective of knowledge, which is always plural, changing and fluid. Therefore, the results are discussed in terms of the production of some knowledges about the researched phenomenon but not as an exhaustive study. The final sections of the dissertation are devoted to a cross-study discussion of new ways of interpreting and describing the research material presented in four sub-studies. This discussion does not aim at obtaining better or more correct results; instead, it aims at presenting a different aspect of these results. It acknowledges different spatial and temporal locations and the ways in which these locations affect the production of knowledge.

Welfare spaces of (non)ageing: a discourse perspective2013In: Studia Humanistyczne AGH, ISSN 1732-2189, Vol. 12, no 1, p. 25-39Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to articulate an approach for discursive research on welfare cultures of ageing that responds to the challenges facing contemporary research on old age and ageism. It is based on the assumption that to understand conditions under which people are ageing in different countries, various societal levels and actors need to be examined and their roles in setting the old age agenda need to be accounted for. Additionally this paper reflects upon the welfare spaces of ageing in Poland, spaces where people in Poland grow old and/or are allowed to do so. As a result, this paper indicates the lack of spaces of ageing in the welfare context in Poland. People are expected not to grow old; old age remains a misunderstood phenomenon. Contrary to the excessive knowledge against old age, there is considerable lack of knowledge/br old age. Therefore, spaces of non-ageing are invoked in order to elaborate on these processes. Spaces of non-ageing identify various societal domains and show what needs to be done in order not to grow old. Spaces of non-ageing repudiate the idea of old age as something terrifying and, on many occasions, immoral.

The right feeling – emotions in the work rehabilitation process2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper engages with the role of emotions in the work rehabilitation process within the context of status meetings in Sweden. The interactional analysis applied in this paper allows us to trace the process of constructing and negotiating emotions that emerge as the key to a successful meeting. Thanks to the use of video-recordings, we illustrate this process as involving talk and bodily actions. Our paper critically discusses the salient transition of the core concept of work rehabilitation- workability into a form of emotion-ability, which affects both professionals and clients and the way in which they may and wish to interact. We reveal the ways in which the idea of participation translated to everyday institutional practice becomes a drive to assure that meetings' participants ‘feel good' rather than fully engaging with the agenda at hand.

    Abstract [en]

This article explores media discourse of ageing, taking the example of Poland and relating it to a broader discussion of ageing policy. The discourse in news magazines appears both to reflect and create attitudes towards older people, which in turn has implications for ageing policy. To reveal the nature of these attitudes, we use a method of attitudinal positioning. The study analyzes articles that appeared in the four largest Polish weekly opinion news magazines, in the 2004–2007 period. Various domains in the discourse of ageing are identified, yet only the family and market domains seem to be described in exclusively positive terms: the authors discuss the implications of this for ageing policy.

Grandmothers and non-grandmothers in the Polish labor market: The role of family issues2019In: Journal of Family Issues, ISSN 0192-513X, E-ISSN 1552-5481, Vol. 40, no 12, p. 1677-1704Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Drawing on the debates regarding work?family reconciliation in later life, we examine the extent to which the labor market position of grandmothers and nongrandmothers can be explained by their varied family situations. The data for this study comes from the Generations and Gender Survey for Poland and includes 5,999 women aged 45+ years. We use multinominal logistic regression models to explore the link between different family situations and labor market withdrawal into unemployment, sick/disability leave, and retirement. Our results indicate that neither caring for older parents nor living with children has significant effects on women?s labor activity. However, living with a disabled person reduces the chances for women?s employment significantly. In addition, women who have grandchildren have lower chances for being employed as compared with those without grandchildren. We discuss these findings in relation to work?family balance policies and research.

'When I'm 65': On the age-negotiated duty to work2019In: Work, Employment and Society, ISSN 0950-0170, E-ISSN 1469-8722Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The duty to work is an unquestionable norm in contemporary welfare systems. Nonetheless, as argued in this article, duty to work can be negotiable, and there are age norms that can be used to loosen its otherwise rigid character. This interview-based article follows the work rehabilitation stories of 57 men and women who, in making sense of their illnesses, rehabilitation and work, recurrently use age norms to validate their accounts. In the context of heightened social pressures on paid labour, the practices of doing age seem to both validate and counterbalance the norms of paid labour. Interestingly, the use of age norms is not bounded by any age, gender or education groups; rather, it is used across various social positions. The article discusses age and age norms and their relation to the moral norms of paid labour in contemporary welfare societies.

    Abstract [en]

In this study ten qualitative interviews were conducted with professional home daycare providers in a Swedish municipality. The aim of the study is to explore home daycare providers approach and attitudes towards their mandatory reporting and to find out if there are any factors that affects their decision of reporting to the child protective service. With a thematic analysis four main themes were found; Where is the limit, The support from the organization, Private and professional and Black on white. Where is the limit implies that there is a difficulty of making a decision when to report child maltreatment to the child protective service and how to discover child maltreatment. The support of the organization includes support from the manager and colleagues in the process of reporting. Privat and professional includes the experienced dilemma of being private and professional at the same time. Black on white intend to discuss the need of getting more knowledge and education regarding mandatory reporting as well as signs of maltreatment. The result has been analyzed with previous research and the theory of action and discretion.

    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

Problem From 2013 to April 2016, Sweden has received 309,669 asylum seekers. The great waves of asylum seekers who have come underscores the need to provide the optimal conditions to adapt and integrate into society. How fast and to what degree they manage to socialize and integrate into society is related to the basic conditions such as language training and civic orientation. This study examines the opportunities and obstacles for asylum seekers to learn Swedish and increase their chances to integrate.

Method The study used a mixed method (qualitative and quantitative) approach. Through qualitative interviews with staff and volunteer teachers, has seven such activities as (ABF, NBV, Library, Adult education” Vuxenskola”, BILDA, Folkuniversitet and Red Cross) investigated. Through a questionnaire with structured questionnaires, examined 183 asylum seekers in terms of factors that affect the availability to the teaching and motivation for study and linguistic practices. The questionnaires were distributed in Jönköping, Nässjö, Bodafors, Viebäck, Vetlanda, Sävsjö, Värnamo, Vaggeryd, Tokeryd and Skillingaryd.

    Result

Qualitative part: Those interviewed said that it is important to offer Swedish tuition for asylum seekers from the first day they come to Sweden. Teachers raise the issue that there are several shortcomings that make difficulties for businesses so that they can provide quality and adequate education.

Quantitative part: The motivation for language learning is influenced by several factors: among them, the time since arrival the motivation for and participation in language teaching. Despite similarities in education and language skills between the sexes, still significant gender differences in the practical application and integration.

Conclusion Asylum seekers strive to become a part of Swedish society. There are gender differences in the practical application and integration. The conditions for learning the Swedish language is not good enough, because lack of information or delay of information for offered Swedish teaching, too few offered teaching hours, location outside of society, economic barriers and the lack of childcare, which also affects the ability to learn Swedish and integrate into society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The title of this essay is “Collaboration between social services and schools”. Research shows that many children and youth who are badly treated are not noticed and do not receive the help that they need. This could be due to the lack of collaboration between different authorities and professionals. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze how the social services and schools are collaborating in terms of children and youth who are badly treated or is at risk of being badly treated and to identify what factors make collaboration possible and hinder it. This study applies a qualitative research perspective. We gathered our data through interviews with two social welfare secretaries, one teacher and one school counselor. The data is analyzed with the theories and concepts which are found in our background and previous research. The result of this study shows that there are different forms of collaboration which occur on different levels. Collaboration between social services and schools mostly takes place on the first level, for example in the exchange of information. There are a number of different possibilities and obstacles that appear in our data as well as in the research. This study has shown that there is a need in both social services and schools to use each others competence and resources. We can also see that factors such as confidentiality, communication and resources make collaboration possible, but that they also can hinder it.

Darkness at Noon: Adiaphorization and Humiliation in the Neoliberal University2019Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

As researchers have observed, one of the side-effects of the neoliberal ethos in contemporary academia is humiliation in academic working life, related to undignifying social behaviours, including mobbing and bullying practices (Zawadzki, 2017; Twale, 2018). Neoliberal aims as publications in prestigious journals, grants or next academic degrees very often become the ends of themselves for academics, working as the “moral sleeping pills” (Bauman, 1991: 26), strengthening obedience towards neoliberal rules of academic excellence game. It creates an ultra-conformist monoculture and reduce the possibility to perceive the neoliberal ideology as a source of the observed and experienced unethical actions. In consequence, very often victims and witnesses of humiliation in academia perceive neoliberal changes as morally neutral, or adiaphorizing (Bauman, 1991), justifying the authority of managerial changes and seeing them as a solution to their harm (Stein, 2001). This might be understood as an example of what Stanley Milgram calls an “agentic shift” (Milgram, 1974/2005), where an individual “feels responsible to the authority directing him but feels no responsibility for the content of the actions that the authority prescribes” (ibid.: 147).

The aim of the paper is to reflect on the social context of humiliation as a consequence of neoliberal changes in academia within the use of Zygmunt Bauman’s ideas of adiaphorization and scientific management as a producer of the horrific (Jensen, 2010; 2011, 2014). The paper is based on empirical findings on Polish university, affected by nation-wide neoliberal reforms and currently undergoing local, management-led, organizational change.

    Abstract [en]

In this study the aim is to create an understanding of what characterizes social workers measures in leaving care for young people in secure units. The study uses semi-structured interviews as a qualitative data collection method where social workers shared their experiences of working with leaving care for young people in secure units. Based on the interviews, our analysis found three themes that describe what characterize social workers’ work. The themes are: Maintain young people’s achievements, Resistance in leaving care and Expectations for young people’s future. What kind of measures the social workers provided along with what they experienced benefited or hindered their work has been analyzed on the basis of resilience and street-level bureaucracy. With the support of these theoretical perspectives housing, employment, treatment and social network was found to be a part of the social workers’ measures to promote young people’s chances for an independent living. It was also found that social workers experiences resistance from young people and how they worked with these setbacks. The study also highlights how the social workers’ strived to integrate young people back into society.

Brukarinflytandets komplexitet: En kvalitativ studie om brukarinflytande i förbättringsarbete inom kommunal omsorg2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Advantages and disadvantages of the diagnosis of ADHD according to nine teachers

    Antal sidor: 27 __________________________________________________________________________

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Daily life support is a key success factor in efforts to support vulnerable groups in managing their own living and this is certainly true for addicts. This is a comparative study based on interviews with six daily supporters who work with addicts and six daily supporters who are working with mentally disabled clients. The purpose is to examine their experiences and their perceptions of what the work contains. What justifies the separation of the two groups and what are the consequences for the clients and for the professionals who work with daily life support for the two groups? The result is analyzed with earlier research in the area of daily life support, research concerning the development of professions and theories of social constructivism. The result shows that the categorization may has to do with the focus of the work with living support and that the daily living support for addicts often is directed towards the addicts ability to manage their own accommodation without risking the tenants to be evicted. In addition, the categorization implicates for addicts in terms of the existence of an indirect constraint embedded in the work of daily life support for addicts which is not found in the work of the mentally ill clients. Finally, it is possible to point to a significant difference in terms of consequences for the addicts in relation to the mentally ill group even if the base for the decision of categorization may be uncertain.
