Teaching Writing in Upper Secondary School2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to investigate how writing is taught in upper secondary school as well as what kind of writing is taught, the teachers’ attitudes towards writing and how written production is assessed. I am interested to see if teachers use different methods both when it comes to teaching and grading writing.

My research is based on recorded interviews with four upper secondary school teachers from two different schools. The teachers were interviewed on their planning, executing and grading of writing within English A and B. I have also carried out extensive reading of earlier research in order to get a complete background.

The result shows that all four teachers believe that writing is an important part of language learning and they all enjoy teaching it. The main focus is put on the formal aspects of writing, in order to prepare students for the national tests. Only one of the four teachers feel that creative writing is the best way to learn a second language. All teachers go through the formal rules of writing with the entire class before giving them an assignment. The biggest difference between the different teachers is the marking and final grading of the written production, where one teacher does not grade assignments at all and another has developed her own scale.

    Abstract [sv]

Firefighter or Fireman? Teachers’ attitudes towards gender neutrality in the foreign language classroom2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay investigates the extent and significance of a gender decisive language in the foreign language classroom. Focus lies on teachers teaching English as a foreign language and their attitudes towards gender neutrality from a pure linguistic point of view.

My starting point was previous research done concerning my topic and the survey was performed through questionnaires that were sent out with both qualitative and quantitative questions to thirty teachers.

My findings indicate that the teachers contradict themselves when answering the questionnaire. Their knowledge of gender neutrality is surprisingly low, but they think they know more than they actually do. It is essential to teach more about gender decisive language in schools and at the Teachers’ Education to promote equality. Conclusions can be drawn that this is an issue not dealt with enough and that teachers seem to have a distorted image about their approach concerning gender neutrality.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines sexual relations and the meeting between man and woman in Charles Bukowski’s authorship through the autobiographic protagonist Henry Chinaski in the novels Post Office and Women. The focus of the analysis is based on three aspects of the meeting: The initial meeting, the physical meeting and finally, love. Furthermore, the thesis discusses the taboo of dissociation between masculinity and femininity with focus on Yvonne Hirdman’s gender studies theories. By examining the male norm in addition to male and female sexuality these theories are applied to the novels by using a close reading method.

In conclusion, the thesis finally declasres that, although the male norm is confirmed bythe protagonist, Bukowski challenges, and criticizes the balance of power between thesexes. The female characters portrayed in the novels express their sexuality and initializesexual relationships in a time when women’s sexuality still was stigmatized.

Tracking the traces of intercultural dialogue in internationalization policies of three EU universities: towards a framework2011In: European Journal of Higher Education, ISSN 2156-8235, E-ISSN 2156-8243, Vol. 1, no 2-3, p. 119-134Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The internationalization of higher education has been a major concern in the last decades for a variety of reasons. This concern has been addressed by policymakers in a number of ways, most commonly through increased international partnerships and recruitment of international students. Much of the underlying motivation for internationalization is underpinned by a desire for raising European universities’ financial and/or academic position. This article argues that it is advantageous for all to develop internationalization policies in a creative, equal and reciprocal manner, focusing on the concept of ‘intercultural dialogue’. Through the consideration of policy documents of three higher education institutions in Spain, Sweden and the UK, we identify opportunities for developing an intercultural dialogue approach to internationalization. Finally, a conceptual framework is proposed through which internationalization could be related to intercultural dialogue in universities.

Code-switching in the foreign language classroom2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

It is a frequently observed phenomenon that language learners often turn to their native language in the foreign language classroom, i.e. they code-switch, but why is it so? In order to investigate this, this study had two aims; the first aim was about trying to see if the frequency of code-switching differed depending on the questions’ levels of difficulty. This study was conducted on three different upper-secondary schools and involved 24 pupils. The pupils’ age varied from 16 to 19. The hypotheses were that pupils code-switch less when answering basic level questions and more when answering advanced level questions. Small groups were observed and they read a text and answered eight questions. The results showed that the pupils did code-switch more on the advanced level questions and less on the basic level questions. They code-switched 15 times on the basic level-questions and 21 times on the advanced level-questions. However, this is not a big difference since there were only six instances that differed between them. The second aim was about trying to see if one could categorize code-switching. It was based on Sert’s (2005) three categories; Equivalence, Reiteration and Floor-holding and four other categories invented by the researcher of this study; Student-student code-switching, Student-researcher code-switching, Comfort code-switching and Sorry code-switching, thus, seven categories in total. The results showed that the pupils did code-switch differently and that Sert’s categories did exist, but they were not enough that is why the researcher added the four other categories.

Awareness of language use in conceptualization: a study of children's understanding of movement and gravity2011In: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, ISSN 0031-3831, E-ISSN 1470-1170, Vol. 55, no 3, p. 255-271Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to examine the role of children’s awareness of the function of language use in expressing understanding. Preschool and elementary school children were asked two questions presenting a problem that could be described in classical mechanics and basic astronomy. They were then encouraged to reflect on their own language use when expressing their conceptions of the physical phenomena they had discussed. The article concerns learning from a phenomenographic perspective, with emphasis on the interplay between language use and meaning-making when developing understanding. Understanding is seen as an activity, while awareness of language use in understanding is regarded as an important aspect. 40 children in preschool and elementary school (six and ten years old respectively) participated in an empirical, qualitative investigation. A particular dialogue format was used, that has been developed within the intentional-expressive approach. Dialogue excerpts where the children expressed awareness of their own language and understanding were selected from the empirical material, and contextual analysis was used to delimit qualities of awareness expressed in these excerpts. The qualities of awareness were grouped in four descriptive categories: 1) awareness of the relation between language form and language meaning; 2) awareness of the nature of understanding; 3) awareness of the expressive function of language for new meaning; and 4) awareness of the function of language use in understanding. A widened definition of language awareness is proposed and discussed, in which awareness of the close relationship between language use and meaning-making is taken into consideration.

    Abstract [en]
