    Abstract [sv]

compassion fatigue - emotionell konsekvens av att vårda2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background:Compassion and empathy is an essential part of nursing. Compassion fatigue (CF) can happen to nurses when the emotional challenges in the profession is too much to handle which weakens their own health. CF can cause a compromised ability to provide a good and compassionate care.  Aim:To illuminate compassion fatigue from a nurse-perspective.  Method:A literature review with qualitative design. An inductive approach has been applied. CINAHL, PsycINFO and PubMed was used as databases and generated in 12 articles. Result:Three main categories appeared; keeping balance between work and personal lifeimportance of supportand aspects related to caring. Nurses run a higher risk of developing CF when the work affects their personal-life in a negative way. The risk for CF was also heightened when the nurse was not able to ease the patients suffering or if a lack of support occurred. On the contrary, adequate support and the rewarding parts of the profession could combat CF.  Conclusion:CF affect the nurses well-being which can lead to an inadequate care. Illuminating the phenomenon and its meaning can provide help to identify signs of CF. Increased knowledge can result in a development of personal strategies as well as an improvement in the healthcare system in order to prevent CF.

    Abstract [sv]

Speeding up matrix computation kernels by sharing vector coprocessor among multiple cores on chip2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today’s computer systems develop towards less energy consumption while keeping high performance. These are contradictory requirement and pose a great challenge. A good example of an application were this is used is the smartphone. The constraints are on long battery time while getting high performance required by future 2D/3D applications. A solution to this is heterogeneous systems that have components that are specialized in different tasks and can execute them fast with low energy consumption. These could be specialized i.e. encoding/decoding, encryption/decryption, image processing or communication.

At the apartment of Computer Architecture and Parallel Processing Laboratory (CAPPL) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) a vector co-processor has been developed. The Vector co-processor has the unusual feature of being able to receive instructions from multiple hosts (scalar cores). In addition to this a test system with a couple of scalar processors using the vector processor has been developed. This thesis describes this processor and its test system. It also shows the development of math applications involving matrix operations. This results in the conclusions of the vector co-processing saving substantial amount of energy while speeding up the execution of the applications.

In addition to this the thesis will describe an extension of the vector co-processor design that makes it possible to monitor the throughput of instructions and data in the processor.

Testsystem för utredning av integrerad styrning för RC-helikopter2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This report is about the creation of a test system for development of a control system for a off the shelf RC-helicopter, which can be bought for about two thousand SEK. The test system consists of both electronics for controlling the helicopter and mechanical constrainer. The constrainer is used for mounting the helicopter so that it won´t crash.A circuit board including processor and sensors was manufactured. This was used for doing test of the different control algorithms. In this way were we able to analyze the quality of the sensors chosen, and what other sensors that could contribute to the control of the system.Basic helicopter control have been studied and presented in the report. Also different kinds of regulation algorithm were presented. These have also been implemented and tested in the test system.Experiments were made to identify how signals in the radio controller were mixed and translated before they were sent to the receiver, to be used to control the helicopter. This could later be used to translate the control signal from the regulators.Demonstrations, with the help of the test system, revealed the pros and cons of the different sensors and other hardware. Different regulation techniques were also tested and analyzed.

ANALYS AV STATIONSHUS UPPFÖRDA 1860–1900 MED BEVARANDE- OCH ENERGIKRAV I KLIMATSKALET2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Dark Web2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

High performance is a goal in most sporting activities, for elite athletes as well as for recreational practitioners, and the process of measuring, evaluating and improving performance is one fundamental aspect to why people engage in sports. This is a complex process which possibly involves analyzing large amounts of heterogeneous data in order to apply actions that change important properties for improved outcome. The number of computer based decision support systems in the context of data analysis for performance improvement is scarce. In this position paper we briefly review the literature, and we propose the use of information fusion, situation modeling and visual analytics as suitable tools for supporting decision makers, ranging from recreational to elite, in the process of performance evaluation.

Muscular dystrophy in adults: a five-year follow-up.1999In: Scandinavian Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, ISSN 0036-5505, E-ISSN 1940-2228, Vol. 31, no 3, p. 178-184Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to describe the natural history of adults with hereditary muscular dystrophies, including myotonic dystrophy, with respect to muscular function, ventilation and electrocardiogram. In a prospective study, 46 subjects were followed over a period of five years. In 1991 and 1996, their muscle function was assessed according to an observation scheme and their lung vital capacity was measured by spirometer. Electrocardiograms were obtained in 1991, 1993 and 1996. Deterioration of muscular function was seen with regard to both the functional muscle tests and the vital capacity. The proportion of pathological electrocardiograms increased from 38% in 1991 to 54% in 1996 in the 26 patients with myotonic dystrophy without an increase in clinically detected cardiac abnormalities. Timely examinations using standard methods can reveal medically important information on deterioration, which often passes clinically unnoticed because of the insidious progress of the diseases.

Transparency in European football: A study of financial disclosure transparency from a supporter perspective2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background and Problem: Despite the exploding increase in revenue by more than 500 percent (1996-2014) among European football clubs, the operating profit in the “big five” leagues are, paradoxically, inexistent or very low. Hence, there is a need for more transparent financial reporting in European football.

To preserve the game’s well-being and establish a sustainable future, UEFA introduced Financial Fair Play (FFP) back in 2010 as a part of their club licensing requirements. The transparency that FFP is intended to improve is however only disclosed to UEFA and its member associations, which is only one of many stakeholders.

In times of financial turmoil in European football clubs, where fair play and sustainability is frequently discussed since the implementation of FFP, one could ask; is it really fair play that not all European football clubs are obligated to be transparent towards all their stakeholders and supporters?

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to, from a supporter perspective, look at how transparent European football clubs’ financial disclosure is.

Methodology: The research has elements of both a deductive and an inductive approach and uses a disclosure checklist with a cross-sectional design, in order to measure disclosure transparency.

Empirical Results and Conclusion: Even though the empirical findings proved that financial reporting transparency are present within European football, the conclusion is that the financial reporting is generally not transparent within the industry.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to analyse the Swedish employee stock option legislation’s compliance with EC law. Chapter 10 section 11 subsection 2 of the Swedish income tax act states that when a person subject to unlimited tax liability ceases to be domiciled or permanently resident in Sweden, the change of residence is deemed equal to the redemption of the employee stock options and shall therefore be taxed. Due to the emigration, not yet realized assets are taxed. The kind of taxation present in the Swedish employee stock option legislation is an example of an exit tax.

The first part of our analysis consists of determining whether the Swedish employee stock option legislation may constitute an unlawful obstacle for the free movement of workers and capital within the internal market. According to our terminology, an obstacle put up by the home state, capable of deterring citizens or residents of that country from exercising their right to free movement is considered a home state obstacle. We have reached the conclusion that the Swedish employee stock option legislation constitutes an unlawful home state obstacle for the free movement of workers and capital.

The second part of this study consists of investigating whether the Swedish employee stock option legislation can be justified under the EC treaty or under the rule of reason test. Concerning the possibilities stated in articles 39 and 58 EC to depart from the principle of free movement, we would like to suggest that the exit taxation provision found in the Swedish employee stock option legislation cannot be justified through neither of them. The rule of reason justification grounds coherence of the tax system, effectiveness of fiscal supervision and the need to prevent tax avoidance are tried in relation to the Swedish employee stock option legislation. By reference to case law from the ECJ and the analysis in the thesis, none of the three seems to be able to justify the Swedish employee stock option legislation.

The Swedish employee stock option legislation cannot, according to our analysis, be justified neither through the treaty nor the rule of reason test. In our opinion, it therefore constitutes an unlawful home state obstacle for the free movement of workers and capital. The consequence of an unlawful obstacle is that the member state may not apply that rule.

    Abstract [en]

This study has been done within mathematic education. The purpose of the study is to analyse how much space time- and clock assignments are given in relation to other quantities in two popular teaching materials. Analysis and interpretations of assignments from the two teaching materials have been the basis for the study.

The study has been restricted to containing teaching materials for grade 1-3. This subject was chosen because the curriculum in mathematic can be seen as rather slim when it comes to time and the clock, therefore it can be interesting to see how much space these assignments get in the different teaching materials. The study has its foundation in the sociocultural perspective, which means that humans learn in interplay with one another.  The sociocultural perspective is the most central perspective of the curriculum for the elementary school  (Skolverket, 2018) and is also strongly connected to the five mathematical abilities the study contains. The result also shows that the five mathematical abilities are not clearly shown through the assignments of the teaching materials. The result also shows that the five mathematical abilities are not revealed in a clear way through the assignments in the teaching materials. However, the five mathematical abilities can be made more visible through interpretations by those who work with the teaching material. Teacher manuals proved helpful to some degree when it comes to interpretation of what abilities that can be learned through the assignments.

    Abstract [sv]

Factors that Impact Inventory Levels in a Supermarket System Supplying a Manufacturing Line2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to identify factors that have an impact on supermarket inventory levels that supply a manufacturing line and investigate how the impact of these factors can be controlled. In order to fulfill the purpose it was broken down into two research questions.

    1. What factors have an impact on supermarket inventory levels supplying a manufacturing line?
    2. 2.      How can the impact of these factors be controlled?

Method - To answer the research questions a literature study and a case study were conducted. The empirical findings from the case study and the literature study were used to find the answer to the first research question. The identified factors in the first research question were then analysed with the theoretical framework in order to answer the second research question. Different techniques have been used in order to collect necessary data including documentation studies, interviews, observations and basic training in the case company’s procurement system (GILM).

Findings - Total safety lead time, firm time and shortage impact were discovered during the case study. These factors were not to found during the literature study because they were specific parameters that are predetermined in the case company’s procurement system. Internal material handling and supermarket order quantity were factors also found during the case study. The identified factors are divided after which tool or method that can be used to gain control over the factor. Four different tools have been identified as solutions to gain control over the internal material handling. The factors that only have one identified tool as a solution are either case specific or not attentive in the theoretical framework as the other tools.

Implications - The identified factors from the literature study are considered as common factors that can be applied for companies that have a supermarket inventory. If manufacturing companies are facing problems with their supermarket inventory levels they can increase control by investigating the tools and methods presented in this thesis. Contributions - The factors that were identified during the case study have contributed with new discoveries in the field of study, since there is limited research done in this subject regarding supermarket systems.

Research limitations - More case studies could have been performed at similar companies, in order to investigate how generalizable the answers to both research questions are.

    Abstract [en]

Along the public transport network a number of water protection areas have been constructed. The water protection areas have been built to ensure that water which is used as drinking water does not become contaminated by road pollution. This work has been done to verify that the protection functions correctly.

Today, information on how the water protection areas function is insufficient and controls has therefore been made of three water protection areas in the Jönköping region. The protection areas are located near Sävsjö, Eksjö and Aneby. The designs of the protection areas are different and there is a debate about the most appropriate choice for the separation of road pollution. A verification of the maintenance work has been made.

A comparison of the three protection methods concludes that the road water should be led through watertight pipes before it is transported into the sedimentation dam, in order to prevent sedimentation from taking place during the transport, which could lead to difficulties in locating where the sedimentation of the pollution takes place. The top layer in the dam can be designed with either a compact moraine layer or a layer of crushed rock. The choice will affect how quickly the sedimentation layer will build up. If a compact moraine layer is chosen it should include vegetation to bind the sediment and to lower the speed of the water. Some form of infiltration should be placed after the dam to take care of any remaining pollutants.

Since all water from a longer stretch of road is transported to one point, all the pollution from that stretch will be collected in a water protection area which is connected to the water supply. If the water is not treated correctly the protection area can become a negative source instead of positive. Better monitoring of how the water protection areas work is needed, to ensure that the water supply is not affected. Today the maintenance of the water protection areas is inadequate, which could lead to them not functioning correctly. Clearer instructions on how to maintain the water protection areas should therefore be developed.

When constructing a new water protection area, samples should be taken after a certain time to check that the protection works as intended.

Management and Information Technology: Challenges for the modern organization2012Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Information technology has come to play an important role in organizations over the last few decades. Though it began as an entity dealt with by specialists, IT has evolved to become an everyday tool with both operational and strategic impacts. Most modern organizations have adopted different forms of IT, and become dependent on their computer-based information systems and their peripherals for everyday operations. Information technology offers opportunities to increase efficiency, customer value, and competitiveness.

Given the financial investment in IT required by organizations to remain competitive, IT has become a resource that needs to be managed. Management and Information Technology evaluates organizations' utilization of IT including knowledge management and e-learning, accounting, and business relationships. Presenting theories to help the reader understand the varying roles IT can occupy in different organizations, this volume illustrates the ways in which IT has become a key strategic tool.

The Role of Events in the Change of Business Networks: A Challenge for Strategy?2008In: 5th Nordic Workshop on Relationship Dynamics, 2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper takes its starting point in the so called business network approach, which is based on the notion that companies build exchange relationships with other companies; relationships that, in turn, are the building blocks of business networks. Through business relationships the companies become connected, both directly and indirectly, to other parts of the business network, for example, to customers’ customers and suppliers’ suppliers. The connectedness of relationships means that changes taking place in one part of the network may spread far into its other parts.

The change of business networks has generally been discussed from the perspective of a focal company or a focal business relationship and of relationships directly connected to it. Usually indirect business relationships (e.g. with customers’ customers) are ignored. Thus, we still know very little of how change spreads further in business networks. Business network change is, however, a strategic concern for companies, who compete in networked environments and are increasingly dependent on external linkages as a source of resources.

In this paper the purpose is to propose an event-based approach to the study of business network change. Events form the principal point of access to social action in time and can thus be used as windows for network dynamics. So far network change has been examined from the perspective of network structure, taking a defined network as a starting point, and studying the trajectory, change pattern or development process of the structure. We adopt an alternative approach here, taking the change itself as a starting point and selecting discernible change episodes, i.e. events, as the focus of our discussion. This offers a dynamic view on networks, and releases the investigator from strict ex ante limitation of the network in focus. Events are seen as manifestations of change forces causing various changes in business networks, ultimately leading to other important events.

Events such as mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies are often connected to each other, creating event sequences that may restructure significantly the business network in which companies realize and enact their strategy. In the best case, events provide opportunities for firms to restructure the network and to improve their positions within it. However, our results pinpoint the complexity and dynamics of network environments and the challenge strategic management faces in such environments. In the context of merger and acquisition waves and various simultaneously occurring events, it may be extremely difficult to choose one’s own actions, and to see the long-term ramifications of one’s own and others’ actions.

Network Connectivity and Business Netquakes: Ways to Understand the Spread of Change2008In: 24th IMP-conference, 2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Business network dynamics are generally discussed from the perspective of a focal business relationship and of relationships (e.g. with customers and/or suppliers) connected to it. Such studies examine how direct relationships influence each other, while indirect business relationships (e.g. with customers’ customers) are generally ignored. Thus, we still know little of how change spreads in business networks.

We propose a framework inspired by seismology, using the term ‘netquake’ to describe spread of change in business networks. In a business network, the effects of a netquake can basically take two forms: 1) change in the interaction between actors in the existing structure of connected ongoing business relationships, and 2) change in the overall network structure of connected relationships, by ending existing business relationships or initiating new ones. We propose that the intensity of a netquake can be identified using these basic forms of change in the network. The more changes in the network structure of connected relationships in relation to the amount of adaptation in the ongoing connected relationships, the higher the intensity of the netquake.

Earlier business network studies have shown that business relationships affect each other, which has been described as connectedness. In this paper we discuss connectedness at network level, i.e. network connectivity, as an important factor for understanding variations in netquake intensity. High level of connectivity means that changes spread easily in the network, whereas a low level of connectivity moderates the spreading, and thus the business netquake intensity.

The analysis is based on structural linkages of bankruptcies among Swedish IT-companies. The bankruptcies are both seen as the epicentre of business netquakes, and as effects of other netquakes. The spread of change can consequently be addressed through the occurrence of bankruptcies, and other types of effects are thus disregarded in this study. A higher level of network connectivity can be assumed in situations where many bankruptcies can be linked through connected business relationships, indicating high netquake intensity, whereas isolated bankruptcies, indicating low netquake intensity, are expected in structures with lower connectivity. The analysis indicates a large variability of the observable structural linkages of bankruptcies, and supports network connectivity as an important concept to understand spread of change in business networks.

Are foreign acquisitions more successful?: A study of Swedish target firms2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis studies the changes in profitability and employment during a three-year period for 71 Swedish firms that were targets of acquisitions in the years 1998-2001. The aim is to test whether foreign-owned firms are better in generating profitability and employment than domestically-owned firms. The results show that there is a relationship between the nationality of the acquirer and profitability. Foreign ownership has a positive relationship to profitability in general and also account for the highest profitability increases in the period studied. Domestically-owned firms have a positive relationship to decreased profitability which means that the domestically-owned firms have a greater tendency to generate lower profitability than foreign-owned firms in the period studied. No statistically significant results were attained when testing the relationship between nationality of acquirer and change in employment. Nevertheless the figures show a pattern of positive relationships between foreign ownership and increased employment. Tests were made to see if there is any relationship between nationality of acquirer and the economic performance of target firms at the time of acquisition. The results show that foreign acquirers tend to acquire targets with a negative profitability while domestic investors tend to acquire firms with a positive profitability.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Hypertension is the biggest contributor to the global burden of disease, and has a big impact on low-to middle-income countries. Nurses are important actors in disease prevention and health promotion which is typically used to prevent hypertension. Vietnam is a middle-income country with elaborate hypertension problems. Aim: The aim of this study is to explore nurses´ experiences of working with hypertension (HT) prevention in Vietnam.  Method: This is a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Result: Challenges, methods and perceptions from the experiences of working as a nurse with HT prevention were identified. Lack of equipment, methods and funds, and to help the patient change bad habits were the main challenges. Conclusion: Nurses in Vietnam experience many challenges in their work to prevent HT. The challenges include lack of education, resources and difficulties to help people change behaviour. Few opportunities were perceived by the nurses. Further research is needed to explore the situation of nurses working with HT prevention, and what needs to be done on different levels to facilitate their work.

    Abstract [en]

The present study focused on the relationship between previous experiences of, and rated susceptibility to, motion sickness and its correlation to subjective measurements and actual performance. Performance was measured in terms of shooting precision among 23 participants from the Swedish amphibious corps after transportation in a small amphibious boat, while sealed off with no reference to the outside world. Self-rating questionnaires were collected regarding perceived performance and presence of motion sickness. The physiological status perceived by each participant was related to factors that generally indicate early stages of motion sickness, which also were correlated to deficits in performance. It was further shown that participants who believed that their performance could be affected by motion sickness also performed less well.
