Hantering av stokastiska variationer: Val av säkerhetskapacitetsbuffert baserat på kundorderpunktens position2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The study aims to map how the position of the order penetration point is related to companies’ choice to handle stochastic variations in capacity requirements through the use of safety capacity buffers. Hence, the research questions are:

    1. Which are the main safety capacity buffers used to handle stochastic variations in capacity requirements?

    2. How is the position of the order penetration point related to the choice of safety capacity buffers to handle stochastic variations?

Method – A case study has been conducted in order to answer the research questions and thus includes a literature study, interviews and document studies. The interviews were conducted with seven respondents from six companies and the empirical data that emerged from the interviews and document studies were analysed together with theory from the literature study to reach the result of the study.

Findings – The study has identified ten approaches to handle stochastic variations, two of which was not previously mentioned in the theoretical framework. The ten approaches have then been categorized into six safety capacity buffers based on similarities.

After identifying the position of the order penetration point possible connections between the position of the order penetration point and choice of safety capacity buffers have been analysed to explore possible relationships. Three tendencies to connections have been identified but further studies are required to ensure the connections.

Implications – The research area of handling variations in capacity requirements with a division in one capacity buffer and one safety capacity buffer is relatively unexplored. Exploring possible connections between the choice of safety capacity buffers and the position of the order penetration point could fill a gap of knowledge and theoretically contribute to further research within the area of safety capacity buffers. Learning of others’ experiences gives an increased understanding which can help companies to make more informed decisions that can lead to better performance, which is the practical contribution of the study.

Limitations – The studies limitations lies in that only seven respondents from six companies were included in the study, were only one interview was conducted with each respondent. The number of used approaches and their connections to the order penetrations point could have been strengthened in case an increased number of respondents from different kind of companies had participated in the study. Thereby the connections’ generalizability could have been strengthened. Additionally more approaches probably would have been identified in case a greater width had been studied.

In the study the total capacity have been handled as two separated parts to handle expected and unexpected requirements. The approach is relatively new and not established which can complicate and limit the ability for companies to apply the results.

    Abstract [en]

The reason people don’t understand what others are saying can depend on a lot of things. One obvious reason would be that two individuals don’t speak the same language. Even if the two individuals would understand the words in a conversation, it’s not certain that the meaning of the message reaches the receiver the intended way.

The communication settles the agreement for understanding between two parts. Stuart Hall (1973) problematizes the communication process and the chain from when the message is created and coded with meaning, through its distribution until its consumption. The communication between an encoder and a decoder are not ever certain. To not speak the same language is the same as not understanding each other. There are many other factors that influence how the receiver decodes a message.

This thesis aims to identify the brand congruence related to two Swedish ice hockey brands. The intention is to examine how communicative processes can influence the differences between how the brand identity and brand image are interpreted. The theory frame used in the thesis concludes of the following theories; Marketing Communication, Encoding and Decoding and Brand Theory. The Brand Theory is specified within the areas of Sports and Brands, Brand Identity and Brand Image.  The thesis includes both a qualitative and a quantitative method. The qualitative interviews are used to establish the brand identities while the quantitative questionnaire study aims to define the brand images. One of the major conclusions is that there are both congruence and differences in the comparison within both of the brands. Another conclusion is that the differences in how substantial the congruence is relates to resources and the brands background.

Structured knowledge transfer through online education: Mutual benefits for academia and industry2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Scientists are required to disseminate the results of research to the society and companies participating in research projects. The dissemination procedure normally consists of seminars, scientific and layman journal contributions, and conferences that generally are not flexible and timely enought to capture industrial needs. In an effort to accelerate knowledge transfer and technology implementation to sustain and improve competitiveness, Jönköping University has developed a one-year online master programme in cast metals and processes in collaboration with the industry. The collaboration includes development of the curriculum, case studies, lectures and study visits. To explore the development process, we performed interviews and a survey with participating students/professionals, teachers and industrial partners. Our results show that a profound two-way knowledge transfer took place, and that course content and teaching were highly relevant to the industry. Furthermore, industry and academia engaged in new joint research collaborations. Consequently, we hypothesize that the procedure for structured knowledge transfer can be implemented in materials education at advanced level to foster engagement between university, industry and society.

Multi-dimensional Visualization in Enterprise Modeling2012In: Business Information Systems Workshops: BIS 2012 International Workshops and Future Internet Symposium, Vilnius, Lithuania, May 21-23, 2012 Revised Papers / [ed] Witold Abramowicz, John Domingue, Krzysztof Węcel, Springer, 2012, p. 139-152Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Enterprise modeling (EM) is a discipline supporting business and IT alignment by providing means for capturing, visualizing and improving different perspectives of an enterprise, including processes, organization structures, products, systems, and business objectives. However, there is a lot of relevant information besides the one presented in enterprise models. Including such information into enterprise models or an integrated presentation of model and data view is supposed to ease decision making for stakeholders in organizations by providing contextual information for the decision at hand. Additional information however usually means additional complexity. This paper explores possibilities of an integrated presentation guided by the following questions: (1) What kind of complementary information should be visualized in an enterprise model?  (2) How can the information be visualized?  (3) How can the content of a specific visualization be adapted by the business stakeholder using it?

Possibilities and benefits of enhancing the existing enterprise models with visualization of additional information are illustrated using a small case study.

    Abstract [sv]

Att vårda äldre patienter med kronisk smärta: En litteraturöversikt2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic pain is a global phenomenon, where every fifth person experiences moderate to severe pain regularly. Insufficient understanding and knowledge of chronic pain can be an obstacle for elderly patients. Pain relief that is insufficient contributes to unnecessary suffering for the individual. Chronic pain can also influence elderly patients' everyday life, as well as their quality of life.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the health care staffs’ experience of nursing in elderly patients with chronic pain.

Method: This study was a literature review with an inductive design in addition to a selection of qualitative articles.

Result: The health care staff expressed a need for increasing the knowledge about pain, as they sometimes doubted their ability to assess and alleviate the pain in the elderly, which gave a sense of the staff being powerless. The experience was that collaboration, trust, and a functioning communication within the multi-professional team had an important role for optimal pain relief.

Conclusion: In order for the elderly patient with chronic pain to receive sufficient pain relief, the healthcare professionals need abilities such as knowledge, cooperation and self-awareness.

Disclosure of CEO bonus plans: A study of twenty leading EU banking companies2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The CEO bonus of banking companies has become a hot media topic around the world accelerated by the recent financial crisis of 2007-2008 where the excessive pay and risk-taking in the banking sector were recognized. This has raised public concerns around executive remuneration and the transparency of the companies. According to the regulations, the bonus of the CEO is indexed to the firm´s performance. However, the compensation of many CEO’s has been paid out during the financial crisis although the firms have lost money. This has consequently led to rigorous regulations of the financial institutions with the attempt to ensure long-term focus and consider outstanding risk through variable remuneration payments.

Although the remuneration, and specifically annual bonus, has caught a lot of attention by the public and the media, it has been mostly overlooked by regulatory authorities and academics up until today. This research represents the first attempt to examine the disclosure and transparency of CEO annual bonus plans of twenty leading EU banks through the employment of in-depth and descriptive approach.. The purpose of this study is to explore the issue of CEO annual bonus plan with respect to the disclosure of the information provided in the banking companies’ financial reports of 2011. The level of transparency of the companies are scrutinized and measured accordingly to five bonus features, which may contribute to the transparency of annual bonus plans. The bonus plan is regarded as transparent if the majority of the following bonus criteria are fulfilled by the companies; (1) the application of simple targets through a single performance condition; (2) the application of published targets accessible to shareholders; (3) the disclosure of methods applied in order for shareholders and other stakeholders to determine whether the given performance target(s) has been fulfilled; (4) bonus payments in form of cash; (5) the disclosure of annual bonus cap.

The findings of this study show that a significant part of the banks can be considered as non-transparent due to the failure of fulfilling the given bonus plan features, meaning that the issue of disclosure and transparency of annual bonus plans should raise concern for shareholders and regulators, both on the EU-level and nationally. This study evidently shows that the level of information disclosed as to bonus plans of CEO various tremendously between the countries and sometimes also between the companies in the same country, which indicate the issue of disclosure and transparency of annual bonus plans need to be enhanced through regulations.

LGBT Representations on Facebook: Representations of the Self and the Content2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The topic of LGBT rights has been increasingly discussed and debated over recent years. More and more scholars show their interests in the field of LGBT representations in media. However, not many studies involved LGBT representations in social media. This paper explores LGBT representations on Facebook by analysing posts on an open page and in a private group, including both representations of the self as the identity of sexual minorities, content that is displayed on Facebook and the similarities and differences in two different settings (a private group and an open page). This study aims to fill the gap of self- representations of sexual minorities in non-anonymous online settings. Main concepts in this study include communication, gender, and sexuality, media representation, power, identity, stereotypes, self-representations, and discourse. A content analysis was conducted on posts from an LGBT open page and a private group with CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) being used as the method. Results suggest that both the open page and private group express values of non- discrimination, equality, and respect by presenting links, images and with an extra form of representation - personal statements in the group. Compared to the neutral environment on the open page, more personal emotions are involved in the private group and some of them tend to be negative. However, some images can go extreme, they overemphasise same-sex marriages but neglect other ones.

Tinder and Sexual Minorities: A study of non-heterosexual women and transgender individuals' user experience on Tinder2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Recently, online dating has become increasingly popular for people to look for partners. A new era of online dating has taken place as Tinder, the location-based social dating app, becomes the leader of online dating applications. This thesis explores the user experience of non-heterosexual women and transgender individuals at Tinder, including their motivations for using Tinder, their self-representation at Tinder, as well as the meaning of Tinder to their sexuality expression. In order to get a comprehensive interpretation of sexual minorities on social dating apps like Tinder. Theories such as ephemeral social media, front and back region, impression management, and so on are incorporated in this thesis. Additionally, 10 qualitative semi-structured interviews with CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) as an analysis tool were performed with non-heterosexual women (progenitors, bisexuals and queers) (n = 8) and transgender individuals (n = 2). Studies show that social media play an important role in sexual minorities and sexuality exploration and expression. However, the outcome of this study shows that Tinder as the leading social dating app is not important for sexual expression for non-heterosexual women, rather, it's a platform for boosting security and increasing social skills. For transgender participants, Tinder is important to expression of sexuality, as it is considered as a way to meet likeminded people. Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to find out how teachers describe reading and book conversations in the classroom in practice and how these can develop pupils' languages. The aim is also to investigate how teachers describe that they engage all pupils' in book conversations. In order to achieve the aim of the study, empirical material has been collected on the basis of Bryman's (2011) proposal for a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. The study is based on the socio-cultural theory that explains that pupils learn in interaction and through communication with others. The conclusion based on the study's result is that teachers describe that reading and book conversations are of great importance for pupils' language development. Pupils' language is developed when they are given the opportunity to, in groups or individually, strengthen themselves in listening and retelling a spoken text. In order to promote language development among pupils in connection with book conversations, the teachers use different teaching aids to adapt the teaching. The teachers are crucial for enabling pupils to develop and succeed, and therefore they can adapt the reading and book talk occasions to pupils in different ways.

Kartläggning och förbättring av processer hos Aero Materiel.2012Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Measurement of Environmentally Sensitive Productivity Growth in Korean Industries2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study measures productivity growth using the Metafrontier Malmquist-Luenberger productivity growth index (MML index) method and decomposes the index. The results are compared with those obtained from the conventional Malmquist-Luenberger (ML) productivity growth index. MML has two advantages compared with the ML index. The former is able to consider undesirable output as a by-product of production which accounts for producer group heterogeneities. As a result, it enables separation and estimation of changes in the technological gap between regional and global frontier technologies. The proposed index is employed to measure productivity growth and decompose its components in 14 Korean industrial sectors during the period between 1981 and 2007. For the purpose of detailed analysis of policy effects, the study period was divided into three decades. The results show that technology innovation can be regarded as a more important factor of productivity growth, rather than efficiency change. The chemical and Petrochemical, Machinery and Transport equipment industries are treated as global innovators in the whole period. However, the result differs according to decades. It is found that the groups with higher energy efficient technology and profitability obtain a higher productivity growth rate in comparison with their low energy efficient technology industry counterparts. Policy implications of the empirical results are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

In this study we will attempt to measure productivity growth at the industrial level using the Metafrontier Malmquist-Luenberger (MML) productivity growth index and dissect/analyze this index to reveal further information. The results will be compared with those obtained from the conventional Malmquist-Luenberger (ML) productivity growth index. Utilizing the MML-index has two advantages when compared with the ML-index: the first is that it is able to consider undesirable output as a by-product of production; and the second is that it can account for producer group heterogeneities such as production technology. Noting such advantages, we will model this study to achieve three objectives related to productivity, technology and policy effects. To separate the results of the productivity index, we estimate the changes in the technological gap between regional and global frontier technologies. The proposed index presents productivity growth and dissects its components into 14 Korean industrial sectors from 1981 to 2010. For the purpose of detailed analysis, we have divided the relevant period into three decades. The results show that technology innovation can be regarded as an important component of productivity growth, rather than merely efficiency change. Chemical and petrochemical, iron and steel and machinery are all treated as global innovators throughout the entire period. It is also inferred that the groups with higher labor productivity obtain a higher productivity growth rate as compared with their low labor productivity counterparts. Considering the heterogeneity of production technology and the time that policy is introduced, the policy implications of the results will affect the circumstances regarding investment in environmental technology.

Economic Growth in China: During the Period of 1980-20032007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Prior to China’s open-door policy, China was considered among one of the worlds’ most isolated economies. However, that changed when they allowed the market force to go before central planning, and decided on an outward orientation for their development strategy. This was a sign indicating that China allowed foreign trade to play a leading role in its economic development.

This thesis, with the help of income terms of trade (ITT) and GDP per capita, aim to study if there is any relation between trade and growth in China during 1980-2003. The purpose is with help of the econometric tool, time series, to find a positive correlation between these variables. ITT include both the value of exports and imports. That is why the theory ITT is being used for this thesis, since the theory indicates that exports alone cannot explain growth if imports is not considered as well.

The test, time series, was performed by doing a unit root problem, co integration, and a Granger causality test. The result given when doing these tests show of statistically significant result, which indicates that trade is of relevance for growth in China during 1980-2003.

Engine of Growth: The ASEAN-4 case2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, and Thailand, have all chosen outward-oriented strat-egy over inward-oriented strategy to gain economic growth. This approach was due to the Asian miracles development. Therefore, protectionism had to cave in (Edwards, 1993).

This thesis aim with the help of income terms of trade and GDPCAP to study the relation between trade and growth for these countries mentioned. Therefore, see if income terms of trade would work as an engine of growth for these countries. The purpose is to find a posi-tive correlation between the variables. ITT capture the price and volume effects when trade increases. That is why, ITT is used in this thesis, for the purpose that exports alone cannot explain growth if imports are left out.

Time series was conducted with help of a unit root test, co-integration, and Granger causal-ity test. In each test made, the result provided showed of statistically significant values, hence, ITT is of relevance for growth in these countries, during 1980-2006.

Global marketing advertising with cultural differences: How can global companies better address cultural differences in marketing advertising in the Middle East?2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The authors realized the importance of being flexible in cultural values in the current environment of today’s economy. This environment is called ‘globalization’ that has become an interesting topic in the academic world. Beyond the different challenges, the most important challenge regarding to the thesis topic is the cultural challenge. The authors have combined these elements and  wanted to investigate how these factors influence marketing advertising in the Middle East.

Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to reach an understanding about how cultural differences in global marketing advertising can be handled by global companies in the Middle East.

The findings of the thesis reflect upon the question of "how global companies can better address cultural differences in marketing advertising in the Middle East" by first understanding and respecting the culture and religion of the region, following the regulations and guidelines for advertising in every specific country, cooperating with local agencies and adapting the marketing advertising strategy with a glocal ‘think global, act local’ approach.

Design of the Open Source Software Based Business Relationships Model for Public Sector Institutions: Case study of Kivos municipalities2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Business modelling (BM) is being used in commercial organizations of different sizes and industries all over the world as a tool to design, structure and analyse business processes and activities. Hence, advantages of BM can be exploited by public sector institutions (PSIs) as well. Adoption of open source software (OSS) is another phenomenon that started to spread from individual and corporate users to public environment. In Europe, it was successfully done in German municipalities and Swedish police. Moreover, guidelines on OSS public procurement were developed by the group of researchers led by R. A. Ghosh on the base of EU directives on software management.

The aim of the current study is to combine two mentioned above tools (BM and OSS adoption) in one practical approach that could be used by municipalities. The main reason for doing this is obvious lack of findings in both theoretical and practical aspects though the subject is being broadly discussed and promoted. The overall purpose of the current research is to design an OSS based business model for Kivos municipalities that can be later generalized to other public organizations, probably even in other countries. The specific feature of this business modelling is that it is created upon value and relationships instead of issues related to money which is more common for BM.

The current study is an exploratory and inductive qualitative research where case study was chosen as a research strategy. Data collection was conducted using the following techniques: literature review – for secondary data collection, and communication (interview and survey) – for primary data collection. Theoretical framework includes literature (sources providing both general and specific information related to the subject of interest. All gathered information was interpreted and analysed through the instrumentality of enterprise modelling or simply summarised and discussed verbally.

On the base of interpreted results of theoretical and empirical studies desired OSS based business relationships model was designed and described for Kivos municipalities. It is based on value which in particular case implies sharing information, knowledge and experience as well as mutual assistance and reliable interaction between participants of relationships existing in OSS environment.

Human Resource Practices, Absorptive Capacity and Human Costs in SMEs: A Theoretical Model about the Implementation of HRP, its Benefits and Costs2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Absorptive capacity is fundamental for small-middle enterprises to increase their innovativeness and competitiveness in the market place. Human resources, being the most important asset in SMEs, might help firms to obtain adequate levels of absorptive capacity through a planned set of human resource practices. The hu-man costs of implementing such practices, however, cannot be neglected, and this paper studies the relationship between these different variables.

Collaboration within a CSR Project: A Case Study of “Bra Bostäder för Småhushåll till Rimligt Pris”2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore and analyze how collaboration within a CSR project develops and evolves over time. By analyzing a CSR project that in-volves actors from multiple sectors, the aim is to acquire an increased understand-ing of the collaborative process.

Background: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a concept has been growing in im-portance and is becoming an important part of corporations’ strategy, but there are still issues of how to engage in an efficient and effective way. As consumers are be-coming increasingly aware of CSR it can influences their buying behaviors. It is im-portant for corporations to engage in CSR that can result in both social and finan-cial value. CSR collaboration with external actors can provide and leverage unique combinations of resources and knowledge which could otherwise be hard for the corporation to obtain. The challenge for corporations is to find the right collabora-tive partnerships with the capabilities to meet the needs of society. Different types of actors can have different motivations behind their involvement, raising the issue of how they can collaborate without conflict.

Method: To answer the purpose, a case study was conducted. The case study is based on a project called “Bra bostäder för småhushåll till rimligt pris” which is aimed at alle-viate the shortage of affordable housing in Sweden. The project intends to show that it is possible to build more affordable homes where the price for the end con-sumer is considered from the beginning. Primary data was collected through semi-structured interviewees with important actors involved in the case.

Conclusion: The ability to develop a CSR project is critically dependent on the collabora-tion between the involved actors. The collaborative process and inclusion of differ-ent actors are based on the competencies, knowledge, and experience. Social as-pects have been the foundation for a shared purpose, but the focus has been on is-sues regarding sustainable financial viability. The collaborative nature has allowed for a unique combinations that would otherwise not been possible and have in-creased the value of the project.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Children are an important source of information in the investigations of the social services. Swedish law stipulates that the best interests of the child should be considered when measures concern them. Social workers sometimes feel insecure about speaking with children. The purpose of this study is to examine the opportunities of social workers for training in speaking with children, and the need for development of the organization in order to improve conversations with children. Two groups are included in the study, social workers that work with non-institutional care, and social workers that primarily work with the exercise of public authority. These groups will be compared to see whether there are similarities and differences in their perception of competence.

Method: The study has been done by a quantitative method where data has been collected with online surveys. In total, 10 of the 13 municipalities in Jönköping County have participated in the study. Out of the 77 social workers in child welfare asked to participate, 52 (65.7 per cent) chose to do so, whereof 19 work with non-institutional care and 33 with the exercise of public authority.

Results: The study shows that there is room for improvement of social workers’ conversations with children with regards to education and work material. The study also shows that there are no significant differences between different types of social workers.

Conclusions: The study indicates that social workers need more knowledge of speaking with children, and that there are areas that need improvement for the conversation with the child to be perceived as more positive.

Undersökningsplikten i förhållande till upplysningsplikten: En rimlig ansvarsfördelning mellan parterna?2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Muntligt sagoberättande i förskolan2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Trade fairs as we know them today have been meeting grounds for merchants and buyers since the 1850’s. Marketing is based upon the open dialogue and the interaction between the buyer and the salesperson, and are therefore important building blocks in the entire marketing process. Purpose: Our purpose is to study how effective a trade fair is as a marketing tool. We intend to look at this phenomenon both from the visitor as well as the exhibitor’s perspective. We also want to find out what elements attract people in the business to visit the fair. Method: By using both a quantitative and a qualitative approach, we hoped to cover as much ground as possible in order to draw as valid conclusions as possible. A quantitative questionnaire along with our qualitative interviews combined the two approaches and gave us a broad spectrum of data to work with. Result: Our study shows that the goals that the exhibitors set up are reached, primarily through exposure on the market and attracting new clients. We have also come to the conclusion that the visitors prepare themselves before the fair to a less extent than what we originally thought. However, this did not interfere with the visitors’ prime objective as to why they attended the fair.

In-transit distribution as a strategy in a global distribution system2011In: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics, ISSN 1756-6517, E-ISSN 1756-6525, Vol. 3, no 2, p. 198-209Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Distribution has become a key factor in today's logistics system due to companies' desires to achieve considerable economies of scale in production, achieved by focused factories, as well as customers' demands for shorter lead-times and customer adapted products. The purpose of this research is to investigate if the in-transit distribution strategy may offer companies a competitive advantage and may be used as a complement to the centralised distribution strategy and/or the decentralised distribution strategy. This study shows that the in-transit distribution strategy can give major competitive advantages by offering rather short lead-times for customers without having to store products locally in warehouses. This, in turn, gives lower warehousing costs, lower tied-up capital, a less interrupted manufacturing, and steady and continuous production volumes. In order to be successful with this strategy, it takes good planning, working closely with customers, good market knowledge, and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that is able to support the strategy sufficiently. Among these factors, low variation in demand as well as manufacturing output is required, and furthermore distribution lead time needs to be predictable.

Supply Chain Planning in Automotive Sector: A Swedish Case Study2011In: Conradi Research Review, ISSN 1459-0980, Vol. 6, no 2, p. 33-54Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This research aims to enhance the current level of knowledge from supply chain planning (SCP) by analyzing the importance of collaboration, information exchange and a supporting information system in its successful execution. These are examined through a case study from international manufacturing company, which operates in automotive industry with its global manufacturing network. Research reveals that collaboration is a complex and important issue of SCP, and occurs simultaneously in vertical and horizontal dimensions. It is important to select strategic partners and to develop a structured work processes and routines. The main objective of collaboration is to determine common goals and objectives and to facilitate the exchange of information; these together drive the performance of a supply chain higher. A sufficient information system supporting the SCP is vital to facilitate collaboration, and information exchange between the different supply chain participants. However, currently in the case company quite many phases of SCP are completed without appropriate and integrated information systems and the process itself contains several manual phases.

Firm Valuation: Which model gives me the most accurate share price, the Dividend Discount Model or the Free Cash Flow to Equity model?2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose:

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the applicability of the Free Cash Flow to Equity Model and the Dividend Discount Model on ten large cap firms on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Moreover the author intends to examine whether these valuation methods differs in regards of the companies’ operational segment, business cycle and turnover. The target prices will hereafter be benchmarked with actual closing prices and professional analysts to observe similarities and deviations.

    Method:

The focus lies on Swedish companies listed on Nasdaq OMX Stockholm’s Large Cap list. The companies are valued by collecting financial information from 2006- 2010 in order to find out what the share price in the beginning of 2011 should be. The models that are used to value the share are the Dividend Discount Model, which basically discounts actual dividends in order to find the present value of the share, and the Free Cash Flow to Equity model, which is discounting the firms’ cash flow available to its stockholders, i.e. the potential dividends. Since both of the valuation models require assumptions on future growth to be made, a combination of calculations and goals presented by the companies has been made in order to assume growth rates.

    Findings:

The findings reveal that out of the twenty valuations that were made half of the most accurate ones came from the Dividend Discount Model, and half came from the Free Cash Flow to Equity model. It was however the Dividend Discount Model that provided the most accurate share prices, in comparison to the actual share prices from January 2011. It is also concluded that the turnover of the firm being evaluated does not have an impact on the valuation process, whilst the industry in which the firm operates as well as its payout ratio are factors that need to be taken into consideration when choosing between the Dividend Discount Model and the Free Cash Flow to Equity model.

Lex Britannia: Fackliga stridsåtgärders förenlighet med EG-rätten2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish legislation concerning collective labour law is based on a system where wages and general employment conditions are regulated by the parties on the labour market through collective agreements. Right of association is a right for employers and workers to belong and work for such an organization. Such organizations are given the right to negotiate in different situations through MBL. Interest disputes, or collective bargaining, refers to a situation where the organization of employers or the organization of workers want to reach a collective agreement, or to renew or change an agreement when the term of agreement has expired. The parties are entitled to take collective offensive actions in situations where no agreement exists. The right to take collective offensive actions is a constitutional right according to the Swedish constitution and can only be restricted through legislation or agreements. The most important restrictions are the non-strike agreement rules in 41-45 § § MBL.

According to the rules of lex Britannia in Swedish law, the non-strike agreement rules are not applicable in working conditions with a weak connection to the Swedish labour market. Furthermore, a collective agreement which is invalid according to foreign law due to a collective offensive action is valid in Sweden if the collective offensive action is valid in Sweden. Also, a Swedish collective agreement is able to push a foreign collective agreement aside concerning incompatible parts. The compatibility of lex Britannia and EC-law has been questioned in relation to article 12 EC concerning discrimination and the freedom to provide services in article 49 EC. Lex Britannia’s purpose is to prevent social dumping which is an acceptable restriction of the freedom to provide services.

The directive concerning posting of workers consists of mandatory rules for minimum protection regarding applicable employment conditions which will be applied in the host state, including rules of minimum wage. One of the purposes of the directive is to prevent social dumping and to safeguard the workers right. Utstationeringslagen does not include any minimum wage rule. According to the preparatory act, the lex Britannia rules are regarded as sufficient means to prevent social dumping in Sweden.

The Labour Market Court decided to ask for a preliminary ruling in case AD 2005 no 49. The case concerned whether collective offensive actions, which had been taken in order to force a posted company in Sweden to apply the Swedish collective agreement in the construction trade, is in breach of article 12 EC and article 49 EC and the directive concerning posting of workers. The case concern the lex Britannia rules in particular since they make the collective offensive actions allowed in situations where MBL is not applicable.

Business Restructuring: The applicability of the arm's length principle for intangibles with an uncertain value at the time of the restructuring2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on the regulations found in the OECD model and the OECD TP guidelines concerning the arm’s length principle. The core of the arm’s length principle is that transactions between associated enterprises should be treated the same as transactions between independent enterprises. This principle can be found in Article 9 of the OECD model. One transaction that may fall within the scope of Article 9 of the OECD model is business restructuring. Business restructuring was previously an unregulated TP area but with the new OECD TP guidelines, from 2010, regulations have been formulated. The aim with thesis is therefore to examine how the arm’s length principle should be applied to the new guidelines for business restructurings of intangibles with an uncertain value at the time of the restructuring.

In order to answer the question set out in this thesis some of the factors that affect the application of the arm’s length principle have been examined separately. Firstly the arm’s length principle that is the generally accepted TP method used by both taxpayers and tax administrations in order to find a fair price for transactions between associated enterprises. The principle seeks to identify the controlled transaction and thereafter find a comparable uncontrolled transaction that is similar to the transaction performed between the associated enterprises. The second part examined the meaning of the term business restructuring according to the new guidelines since there is no other legal or general definition. Business restructurings are defined as cross-border redeployments of functions assets and risks, performed by MNEs. As long as a transaction falls within this definition it will be subjected to the arm’s length principle for tax purposes. The third part examined intangibles since that also lack a general definition. The identification and valuation of intangibles is a complex and uncertain thing to do for both taxpayers and tax administrations. When applying the arm’s length principle it is however found that the issue of identification of what constitutes and intangible may be unnecessary. The aspect that should be considered is instead the value of the intangible or more precise, the value that independent enterprises would have agreed upon in a similar situation.

The applicability of the arm’s length principle to business restructurings of intangibles with an uncertain value at the time of the restructuring should be found by performing a comparability analysis. In order to perform a comparability analysis, the controlled transaction firstly has to be identified. Thereafter, a comparable uncontrolled transaction needs to be found. An equivalent uncontrolled transaction may not be found in all cases and it should in those cases be examined what independent enterprises would have done if they had been in a comparable situation.

The arm’s length principle should be applied to business restructurings of intangibles with an uncertain value in the same manner as for any other uncontrolled transaction. The issues for this type of a transaction become the identification of what constitutes a business restructuring and also how to determine a fair value for the intangibles. The OECD TP guidelines lack some guidance as to the issues that can occur when a comparable uncontrolled transaction cannot be found. This creates an unsatisfactory guesswork for both taxpayers and tax administrations when trying to determine what independent enterprises would have done if they had been in a similar situation. This creates an unnecessary uncertainty when trying to apply the arm’s length principle.

What are feminist fussing about?: Feminists attempts for full Citizenship2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Is citizenship gendered? The answer to this question for most feminist theorists has to be a resounding ‘yes’. For them citizenship has always been gendered in the sense that women and men have stood in different relationship to it, to the disadvantage of women. In recent years citizenship has been combined to gender by a number of feminists. Their work is all about the importance to reconstruct citizenship because they believe it fails to engage or to include women. This thesis examines the limitations of citizenship as it is in its current construction. The discussion clearly indicates the need to use gender and difference as categories of analysis in the creation of an inclusive conception of citizenship. The thesis will focus on the theoretical project and particularly on three debates around the ‘engendering of citizenship’. Discourse analysis is used as textual analysis in order to compare these three alternative models to citizenship. The aim is to investigate what solutions they find to include women into public life. One can appreciate that citizenship is a complex problem and so are the debates concerning it. It is important that feminists discuss this question carefully so that citizenship does not loose its meaning.

Valuation of Family Businesses: A case study2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

The vast majority of all Swedish companies are family businesses. Research within the field of family businesses has not until recent years been developed. Moreover, the research regarding valuation of family businesses is close to non-existing. Family businesses differ in many ways from non-family businesses, for example when it comes to culture, ownership and management. Hence, there is a possibility that family businesses are valuated differently from non-family businesses.

    Purpose of this thesis

The purpose with this thesis is to describe how valuation of family businesses is done from the perspective of an acquiring company.

    Method

For this thesis a qualitative, hermeneutic approach was applied in order to understand the whole picture of the valuation of the family business phenomenon. A case study approach was carried out by carefully studying three acquisitions of small private family businesses in the service sector made by Company X.

    Conclusions

The crucial skills to possess are experience, industry knowledge, intuition and most of all family business knowledge and experience when determining a fair value of a family business. The intangible assets of a family business, for instance reputation, culture and knowledge, together with different valuation methods contribute to the estimation of the value of a family business.

"Punch it like a man!": En semiotisk textanalys av tv-serien New Girl ur ett genusperspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how the established sitcom series New Girl portrays women and men normatively or not. The study also examines whether the characters in the series are portrayed as stereotypes that previous research has found. The study consists of the first seven episodes of the first season, all of which had around one million viewers in Sweden. The purpose and aim of this study is to investigate whether the sitcom-series New Girls characters contributes to current gender norms or if the series is norm breaking. In this way, our study contributes to the relatively unexplored gender research as we get knowledge of hoe gender is represtended in the media. As a method, we apply a qualitative text analysis and the study has its theoretical foundation in semiotics. We use the semiotic concepts denotation and connotation as tools when analyzing the characters. The analysis consisted of a scheme to more easily identify the stereotype of the characters. The analysis scheme consisted of clothing/appearance, pronunciation/appeal, occupation and characteristics/feelings.The result of the study shows that New Girl both strengthens the current gender norms and breaks them. The stereotypes that was expressed in the series were “machoman”, “yuppie”, “career woman” and “bourgeois”.

    Abstract [sv]

Vertical Integration: A Case Study of the Issues Regarding the Internal Trading in a Swedish Engineering Group2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The success of vertical integration is highly dependent on units’ ability to collaborate towards common goals. Deficiencies in coordinating and controlling the internal trading activities could imply that the benefits and the purpose of vertical integration are unutilised. Commonly owned companies that individually satisfy a certain stage in a production chain (i.e. vertical integration) aims efficiently produce full solution products. The goods are transferred through the production chain by trading internally, which stresses the importance of having efficient procedures for the internal trading, as well as properly determined transfer prices for the traded goods and services. Incorrect procedures and lack of management control could, among other factors, foster a behaviour that allows the subsidiaries to act as if independent and unaffiliated. Consequently, such organisational culture is hurtful to a group that is vertically integrated.

In this case study a Swedish engineering group, consisting by five subsidiaries, is examined with the intent of mapping and describe the issues that cause suboptimisations and inefficient internal trading, as well as highlight the most critical factors that needs adjustment or attention in order to improve the internal trading situation. The empirical findings of this case study have been compared to a theoretical framework, founded on underlying and related theories regarding vertical integration. The qualitative data was based on interviews with four Chief Financial Officers and two Chief Executive Officers of companies in the same group. The names of persons and companies will be held confidential.

The findings showed that the companies within this corporate group have highly decentralised relations to each other and are highly autonomous. Only one company is more controlled by top-management. Even though the companies have been united to exist in a vertical integrated group, the trading is still conducted as if the companies are independent of each other and with a lot of self-interest. There is a lack of standardised procedures, incentives, and expressed policies and guidelines from the top-management to encourage collaboration towards the aggregated goals and the group’s profit maximisation. The horizontal management style leaves too undefined frames for conducting internal trades with the focus on maximising the group’s profit. Hence, the internal trading is not optimal and sub-optimisation is likely to occur. The findings of the explorative and descriptive study call for the top-management’s attention and intervention. Two tools for controlling and improve the internal trade is by implementing either a Shared Service Centre or a transfer pricing method, together with motivating incentives.

    Abstract [sv]

Environmental Management Information Systems: How does IT aid the implementation and processes of EMSs?2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organisational impacts on the environment have been a primary topic of

discussion for several decades, prompting a need for organisations to eva-

luate and manage their environmental impacts. Environmental management

systems have since been adopted by companies worldwide for numerous

reasons and benefits. In more recent years, IT solutions have been designed

to meet the various needs of environmental management but with little at-

tention drawn to a standardised approach.

The following thesis aims to determine the use of IT adopted by organisa-

tions to support their environmental management systems (EMSs). In doing

so, the importance of EMSs, IT solutions to support EMSs and the benefits

of IT for such systems are addressed. A small number of informative inter-

views were conducted with EMS consultants and numerous representatives

of ISO 14001 certified companies to establish what IT solutions are availa-

ble to support EMSs and identify the differences between such solutions.

This thesis demonstrates that IT solutions adopted by organisations to sup-

port their EMSs differ in complexity and depend upon the expected results

of the EMS itself. Depending on how integral the EMS is to the organisa-

tion’s business processes, IT can benefit the EMS and ultimately the organi-

sation in a number of ways. In conclusion, EMSs can be implemented with

little technical aid. However, IT is a communicative tool adopted to review,

manage and monitor environmental data and enables easier handling of en-

vironmental data enhancing the performance of the EMS.
