Privacy online: Exploring consumers’ evaluation of privacy issues in relation to personalised advertisement when buying online2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

The development of the Internet has changed the direction of advertising. Personalised advertising has emerged as the most effective and most profitable form of advertisement. Although personalised advertisement has been praised by many, privacy related concerns have been raised since it can be perceived as a violation of the consumer's privacy. Online shopping is another activity growing on the Internet, which also raises concerns about privacy. Therefore, we find it interesting to look on how personalised advertisement in relation to privacy issues can affect the consumer when buying online.

    Purpose

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how online shoppers respond to privacy issues and personalised advertising. The research will focus on the shoppers’ perspective of privacy issues with personalised advertising online. It will also provide companies with useful insights into customer behaviour when shopping online, with the intention of evaluating various forms of personalised advertisement and their effectiveness in order to strengthen companies’ online personalised marketing campaigns.

    Method

As multiple explanations to one and the same research question are sought, the research will be conducted from an interpretivist standpoint. A qualitative research method has been chosen in the form of twelve semi-structured interviews with individuals who have been residents of Sweden for more than six months, with a wide range of ages and an equal representation of the male and female gender. The empirical findings will be analysed based on the grounded theory where common themes based on similarities will be presented.

    Conclusion

It was concluded that the attitudes towards personalised advertisement, privacy issues and its effect on buying behaviour depends on where the advertisement comes from as well as from where the individual is shopping. Furthermore, it was also found that although privacy concerns were raised it did not prevent individuals from continuing to purchase online, only from what sites the purchasing was conducted.

Sjuksköterskors upplevelse av att vårda patienter i palliativ vård: En litteraturstudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care is performed by nurses to improve quality of life for patients who face life-threatening disease. Nurses should apply person-centered care as a part of palliative care and focuses on the patient as a person as well as a patient. The tasks included in palliative care can be demanding for the nurses performing them. However, patients appreciate the nurses because they have an important purpose in regards to the patients and their relatives. In this literature study a Swedish concept called “The six S” was used to connect the findings to established theory. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to describe the experiences of nurses in Scandinavia in regards to caring for patients in palliative care. Method: A review over qualitative research connected to the aim was done in order to achieve the aim of this literature review.Result: Six different themes emerged regarding nurses’ experiences: Existential experiences of caring for patients in palliative care, Emotional experiences of caring for patients in palliative care,  Professionalism in caring for patients in palliative care, Professional growth in caring for patients in palliative care, Feeling powerless in caring for patients in palliative care, and, Feelings of uncertainty in caring for patients in palliative care. Conclusion: The literature study resulted in a description of nurses’ experiences. When shedding light on this subject, existing nurses, as well as future nurses, can feel seen and thus receive essential support in caring for patients in palliative care. Further research is required regarding nurses’ experiences in order to further shed light on the subject.

Growth-of-practice: Towards a notion of organizational betterment2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

I seek to develop a humanist onto-epistemological understanding of firm growth by combining a practice-based social ontology with notions of process theory. Instead of first measuring the outcome in terms of an increase in size and then explaining it backwards via distinct entities, my idea is to turn the mannequin back to its feet. When centering the activity that embeds the individual agent in society at the core of our theorizing, growth entails a different meaning. It becomes a theory of deliberate actions that seek to change an organization’s net of practice-arrangement bundles (cf. Schatzki, 2005) in which practitioners constantly need to make sense of the past while prospecting the future (Hussenot & Missonier, 2016). When acting deliberately, moral reasoning impacts decision-making and action. The acknowledgement of moral reasoning throughout the process of firm growth then allows for its normative evaluation, e.g. whether the individual has acted out of pure interest or altruism, or whether the decision was taken by a single person or democratically involved multiple stakeholders. Instead of searching for practices that lead to increases in sales, profit, or workforce (i.e. growth-as-practice) the main purpose of firm growth becomes the improvement of practices (i.e. growth-of-practice) not only in terms of efficiency but also morality. It moves us closer towards a notion of organizational betterment and thus approaches the meaning of growth commonly depicted in Aristotelian philosophy: the development of character and personality on the road of becoming a good citizen.

Theoretical Perspectives on Growth Motivation: A Systematic Literature Review2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives What motivates entrepreneurs to grow their business? Why are some entrepreneurs more willing than others to grow their firms? Does growth motivation influence the actual growth of firms? These questions serve as guiding lights for a systematic literature review on the topic of business growth motivation. The aim is to develop a holistic conceptual map of growth motivation based upon a meta-theoretical analysis. This procedure will condensate existing knowledge and guide future research.

Prior work Existing reviews on firm growth address the topic of motivation scarcely. Davidsson, Achtenhagen and Naldi (2006) seek for common grounds in existing literature and develop an overarching framework for future research. Wiklund, Patzelt and Shepherd (2009) develop and test an integrative model of firm growth. McKelvie and Wiklund (2010) focus explicitly on the growth mode. Dobbs and Hamilton (2007) criticize an episodic and linear approach towards business growth, while Achtenhagen, Naldi and Melin (2010) highlight a discrepancy between academic and practitioners’ perceptions of growth. Of these, only two review devote sub-chapters to growth motivation (cf. McKelvie & Wiklund 2010; Wiklund et al. 2009). Others, integrate the aspect of motivation indirectly. Yet, motivation plays an important role in seminal contributions of entrepreneurship (cf. Schumpeter 1934; Kirzner 1973) and firm growth (cf. Penrose 1959). In light of this, an up-to-date review on existing research on growth motivation is needed.

Approach This systematic literature review includes publications listed in Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science, limited to the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). The search syntax included various synonyms for ‘motivation’ and ‘business’ in combination with ‘growth’. I searched for the synonyms of ‘motivation’ and ‘business’ in titles, abstract and keywords. ‘Growth’ was required to appear in the title in order to increase the publications’ relevance. A similar approach was proved useful by previous reviews on growth (cf. Achtenhagen et al. 2010). 48 publications are considered eventually. These publications are reviewed systematically with regard to their theoretical approaches. The identified theories are structured in accordance to their position in Locke’s (1991) motivation sequence and their level of analysis in line with Bandura’s (1986) social cognitive theory.

Results I generate a phenomenon-centered conceptual map of firm growth motivation based upon applied theoretical concepts. It reveals that the phenomenon of growth motivation is hypothesized as a cognitive sequence which is influenced by personal, organizational, and environmental components. Until now, the cognitive base was researched extensively and remains mostly in line with developments in organizational and social psychology. A multitude of different persona, organizational, and environmental components have been explored. However, the research on growth motivation remains far from complete. Three aspects require further attention: accuracy of concepts, the influence of interpersonal relationships on growth motivation (e.g., family business), and variations in motivation across time.

Value/Implications The phenomenon-centered map on growth motivation condensates existing knowledge and guide future research on good grounds. The primary contribution is thus research-related. At the same time, it illustrates the complexity of growth motivation and supports critical voices against univocal policy-foci on high-growth firms. The widespread reluctance of small business owner-managers to grow their firms is explained by phenomenon’s immense complexity.

Business growth in practice: Navigating dualities in the process of development2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Studying business growth from inception into establishment is challenging. We took up this challenge and studied a firm’s developmental process over the span of almost 17 years by analysing more than 860 weekly reports. Drawing on recent developments in the entrepreneurship-as-practice literature, our attention was on the activities and practices that supported the firm’s sustained growth. We find that the firm’s overall activity system periodically shifts in temporal focus between future, presence and past by navigating through four different dualities: (1) detail vs efficiency, (2) rigidity vs flexibility, (3) pressure vs relief and (4) prospection vs retrospection. As we emphasize temporal aspects, our findings extend current business growth theory by adding the dimension of past-oriented renewing to future- and presence-oriented entrepreneuring. We encourage practitioners to implement renewing practices during which they actively renovate and modernize obsolescent parts of their business.

Business development in post-growth economies: Challenging assumptions in the existing business growth literature2018In: Management Revue, ISSN 0935-9915, E-ISSN 1861-9908, Vol. 29, no 3, p. 206-229Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Existing literature has not specifically examined individual business growth in post-growth economies. This paper challenges dominant assumptions in the business growth literature by considering post-growth economies as an organisational context characterised by natural resource scarcity and an absence of macro-level economic expansion. We investigate conceptually how such a context impacts business growth theory by seeking to answer three major questions: (1) What is business growth? (2) Why do businesses grow? (3) And how do businesses grow? Accordingly, post-growth contexts pose three major challenges to business growth theorising: (1) business growth as an increase in measurable outcomes, (2) resource competition and dispositive path dependencies, and (3) detrimental growth modes and strategies. Based upon six revised assumptions, we re-define business development in line with forces at work in post-growth economies. We further suggest a multidimensional research agenda that can catalyse future discussions of post-growth organisations. These discussions have the potential to overcome the inertia in business growth theory and its discrepancies with practice.

Uppsökande tandvård och upplevelser om dess effekt på oral hälsa hos beroende äldre2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Purchasing Strategies Impact on a Company's Supply Chain Competitive Advantage: With the Focus on the Lead Buyer Concept2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The Supply Chains of both the oil & gas as well as the construction industry are recognized as complex networks. Therefore, the coordination of these Supply Chains calls for strategic approaches. Procurement and the application of purchasing strategies are one of the decisive aspects for a companies’ business performance and its competitive advantage. Category management and in particular the lead buyer concept are strategic approaches, which help companies to diversify the strategies according to its product portfolio. However, so far little insights are provided about these two industries with regard to the purchasing strategies and the lead buyer concept.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the role of procurement/purchasing within Supply Chain Management. In specific, procurement, the influences of purchasing strategies over time as well as the role of the lead buyer within a company’s purchasing activities.

Method: Within this thesis a multiple case study approach was applied. The cases presented in this thesis consist of two different companies active in the oil & gas as well as construction industry. This thesis made use of primary as well as secondary data. Primary data was gathered through 7 semi-structured interviews and observations. Secondary data was collected through a literature review and documentary secondary data. The empirical findings were structured according to themes and finally, cross-case analysed with regard to literature.

Conclusion: This thesis highlights the importance of strategic purchasing and further examines the contribution of applying the lead buyer concept. A company can increase its Supply Chain competitive advantage and enhance its performance by choosing the strategy according to its needs and goals. The positive influences can occur within short- or long-term. The implementation of the lead buyer concept can help companies in various ways. It allows the company to apply an efficient purchasing process, exploit the different advantages of the lead buyer and to choose the most appropriate purchasing strategy.

Prevent the World's Doom, Consume a Healthy Legume: A Qualitative Study of Attitudes and Purchase Intentions of Health-Conscious Consumers2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Agricultural activities occupy a significant part of the world’s land area and the food systems are comprehensively reliant on fossil fuels, resulting in that the sector is responsible for a large percentage of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Changes are needed in order to meet the challenges of developing sustainable food systems. One change strategy would be to replace parts of animal proteins with greener plant substitutes. This thesis is part of a four-year transdisciplinary research project with the aim to, within four years, develop domestically produced products based on Swedish legumes. This paper will focus on exploring significant components affecting health-conscious consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions regarding legumes-based products. By the thesis, valuable information and insights regarding legumes as a protein substitute will be gathered amongst the growing consumer group of health-conscious consumers.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes regarding legumes, and underlying key components affecting health-conscious consumers purchase intentions towards legume-based products. Additionally, two research questions have been developed to reach valuable findings for this investigation.

Hur instruktioner påverkar elevers delaktighet: Matematisk problemlösning i grupp2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Title:

What influences the assessment of addiction treatment? - Factors that may affect the

    choice of interventions

There are few studies on trauma and the importance of religion for the professional handling

of abuse clients in a Swedish context. It is therefore appropriate to examine the role of such

factors. This study examines whether experienced trauma in childhood or religious beliefs

influence the assessment and selection of input in fictitious cases. To examine this created six

vignettes. Vignettes could assess participants using different set responses. The questionnaire

consisted of two parts, vignettes and personal details of the participants. It included questions

about experienced trauma and religious beliefs. The results of the study show that the abuse

case officers with experienced trauma deems equivalent to the group but have experienced

trauma. Religious officials, however, differ from the non-religious in assessing the choice of

effort. The study shows that one third of abuse officers are religious and half have experienced

a trauma in childhood. Overall, this means that 58 of the 93 participants either experienced

trauma, religious or both. Future research might examine these variables more carefully

operationalize and measure religion and traumas impact assessment with greater precision and

    sensitivity.

    Abstract [en]

The 20th century is sometimes said to be the century of the family farm. Although the countryside changed fundamentally, the farming family - consisting of husband, wife and children - is often seen as intact. However, all farms were not driven by families of the traditional type. One alternative was that two or more of the children took over the farm together, continued to live in the same household and remained unmarried. But how common were such sibling farms? How did they work and what were the motives behind the siblings' choice to live together?

Based on household analyzes, government reports and interviews, historian Martin Dackling in Instead of marriage sketches the history of the sibling farms. He shows that they were neither unusual nor remains of an older peasant society. From the beginning of the 19th century, it became increasingly common for brothers and sisters to take over the farm together and in the 1930s and 1940s sibling farms were a common feature of Swedish countryside. However, after 1950 they became increasingly unusual. The book discusses why the sibling farms arose and Dackling points to cultural, social and economic explanations. An important circumstance was also that most of the siblings remained unmarried. Love relations were not missing, but marriage was difficult to combine with siblings living in the same household. Love relations and sibling relations were in a complicated correlation with each other, and on many farms, living with siblings became an alternative to marriage.

Frihetens och upproriskhetens bakterier: Studentrörelse vid Göteborgs universitet under 60 år2014Collection (editor) (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

Förändringsarbete i offentlig verksamhet: En kvalitativ studie av medarbetares upplevelser2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate employees experiences of the process during the implementation of a newly introduced personnel- and salary system. The authors of this study have chosen a qualitative method in order to explore the empirics and connect this to previous research. The data collection method used was interviews with six salary consultants. This study is based on four themes that were chosen based on prevoius research which are communication, resistance, stress and participation. In the results the information from the respondents are presented, based on the four themes. It was shown that the change caused a lot of stress and a high workload. Lack of time, lack of communication and lack of knowledge were three other main factors that were shown. The results also demonstrate that the change process is affected by the law that controls the organization. Lastly a conclusion is made based on the results and the discussion. The managers should find strategies to communicate change to the employees. The managers shouls also see the change as a possibility instead of a demand in order to promote employees learning and motivation.

A Literature Review on Risk Analysis of Production Location Decisions2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is the result of a master thesis with a focus on risk analysis of production location decisions. The project is a part of “PROLOC-manufacturing footprint during the product’s life cycle”. The main aim of this thesis is to point out how current applicable risk analysis techniques evaluate the risks involved in production location decisions and then underline the most important risks involved in production location decisions and elicit strengths and weaknesses of these methods.A systematic review of literature with a focus on journal papers of risk analysis and production fields is conducted by using the content analysis and coding technique. The current risk analysis techniques identified are failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), life cycle cost (LCC) analysis, and system based techniques like multiobjective analysis, decision tree analysis, and analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In addition two identified frameworks of foreign direct investment (FDI) and international production are the research fields that have contributed extensively in identifying various risks of production location decisions.Having reviewed the literature, it is realized that majority of companies take a short sighted vision in choosing production location and consider just cost based issues like cheaper raw material and low labour cost in some countries and simply ignore uncertainties that can be sources of political, economic, social, competitive, and seismic risks. Low cost countries are usually situated in politically instable areas that can cause long production halts or expropriation. Political risk is mainly identified in FDI literature and is usually triggered by a political turmoil, coup d’état, or revolution. On the other hand cheap labour does not necessarily mean decrease in costs and might bring about quality issues and damage company prestige among customers which results in time and monetary loss. Currency exchange and inflation in costs often causes the initial forecast and cost analysis go wrong. Supply risks are because of disruption of ties with raw material or part suppliers in home country and might result in risk of misuse by new suppliers or partners. Also the seismic risk is introduced as a separate category of risks of production location decisions which can be considered a matter of more investigation and requires further research. The study also presents a review of strengths and weaknesses of existing risk analysis techniques of production location decisions. The lack of consistency, vagueness of information, unfamiliarity with design to cost concept are among the major weaknesses of risk analysis techniques of production location decisions. The study concludes with the fact that just considering the cost oriented factors like cheap labour and raw material by production companies exposed them to various risk and might make the whole investment in vain. Suggestions for further study on techniques and risks of production location decisions are also proposed.

Hur sjuksköterskans bemötande upplevs av personer med diabetes mellitus typ 22019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes type 2 is a chronic disease that can cause various complications. People living with the disease often have regular contact with the healthcare, they receive support and advice on lifestyle changes and self-management of the disease. Aim:To describehow the nurse’s approach is experienced by people with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Method: A literature review based on eleven scientific articles with a qualitative design. The results of the articles were interpreted with an inductive approach.

Results: The main categories Being a part of a team with the nurse and Feeling left outdescribes experiences of a good relationship where the care was planned jointly and people experienced participation in the meeting, as well as experiences of not being seen as individuals, to be ignored and to feel condemned.

Conclusion: The nurse’s approach has a significant impact on people with diabetes type 2. When a good relationship is created, where people experience support, they are more likely to adapt to treatments and has better means for undergoing lifestyle changes. A good relationship is related to people’s experiences of security, trust and serenity. A failing approach can instead lead to negative experiences of the healthcare and reduce motivation for self-management. Lack of support led to experiences of disappointment, loneliness and being misunderstood.

The Use of Card Payment Instruments: A Panel Data Approach2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The rapid growth in the use of non-cash payment instruments, specifically debit and credit cards, has become a prominent feature of modern economies. With an interest in the explanation of this phenomenon and differences in use across countries, we apply a model of payment instrument use to model the relationship between the dependent variables (total volume of card transactions, debit card transactions, and credit card transactions) and the five independent variables based on income, infrastructure, substitution, and institutional influences. We estimate the model and perform a regression analysis on a panel of 22 countries over the period 2009 to 2013. We find that crime, bank concentration, and income have positive relationship with the use of card instruments, while cash is found to be both a complement and substitute to card payments. The variable based on infrascture yields insignificant results. With the results, our purpose is to give greater insight into to the use of the card payments and the explanations for differences in use across countries.

Body mass index, cognitive ability, and dementia: prospective associations and methodological issues in late life2009Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aims of the present study were to investigate the association between overweight and cognitive ability and dementia, and to evaluate the usefulness of self-reported body mass index (BMI) in late life and various data sources commonly used in epidemiological studies to identify persons with dementia. Data were drawn from three population-based studies: the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA), Aging in Women and Men: A Longitudinal Study of Gender Differences in Health Behaviour and Health among Elderly (the Gender Study), and the Finnish Lieto Study. In Study I, the agreement between self-reported and measured BMI over time was evaluated among 774 men and women, ages 40 to 88 years at baseline (mean age 63.9) participating in both the questionnaire phase and in-person testing of SATSA. Latent growth curve (LGC) modeling showed a small but significant increase between self-reported and measured BMI (0.02 kg/m2/y) over time, which would probably not affect the results if self-reported BMI were used as a continuous variable in longitudinal research. In Study II, the agreement between dementia diagnoses from various sources and dementia diagnoses set at a consensus conference was evaluated. Among the 498 elderly people ages 70 to 81 at baseline (mean age 74.5) enrolled in the Gender Study, 87 were diagnosed with dementia during an eight-year period. Review of medical records and nurse evaluations yielded the highest sensitivity (0.83 and 0.80, respectively) and a high specificity (0.98 and 0.96), indicating that these sources might be good proxies of dementia, while data extraction from the Swedish Inpatient Discharge Registry underestimated the prevalence of dementia (sensitivity 0.26). In Study III, the association between being overweight in midlife and cognitive ability in late life was examined in SATSA. The 781 participants ages 25 to 63 at baseline (mean age 41.6) in 1963 or 1973 self-reported their height and weight. From 1986 until 2002, they were assessed five times using a cognitive test battery. LGC models showed that people with higher midlife BMI scores had significantly lower cognitive ability and a significantly steeper decline than their thinner counterparts, an association that persisted when those who developed dementia during the study period were excluded from the analysis. This finding indicates that being overweight might affect cognitive ability independently of dementia. In Study IV, the association between BMI and dementia risk in older persons was described among 605 persons without dementia and ages 65 to 92 at baseline (mean age 70.8) in the Lieto Study. Among these, 86 persons were diagnosed with dementia during eight years of follow-up. Cox regression analyses indicated that for each unit increase in BMI score, the risk of dementia decreased 8% (hazard ratio = 0.92, 95% confidence interval = 0.87–0.97) and the association remained significant when individuals who developed dementia during the first four years of follow-up were excluded from the analyses. This result suggests that low BMI scores are present almost a decade before clinical dementia onset.
