‘Does fortune favor the prepared or the brave small firm?: Exploring how absorptive capacity affects the growth of international small firms’2010Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings, ISSN 1543-8643, nr 1Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores how absorptive capacity affects the growth of international small firms. First, it considers the direct effect of internationalization on growth; and, than, it juxtaposes two hypotheses: (1) absorptive capacity moderates the relationship between small firm internationalization and growth; or (2) absorptive capacity mediates the relationship between small firm internationalization and growth. Longitudinal data provides support for the direct effect of internationalization on growth and for the mediating role of absorptive capacity.

Growth through Internationalization: A Knowledge Perspective on SMEs2008Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Drawing on Penrose’s theory of the growth of the firm, the international business literature, the literature on the knowledge-based view, organizational learning, and absorptive capacity, this dissertation addresses four research questions: 1) What are the effects of downstream international activities (sales and marketing completed abroad) and upstream international activities (purchasing, production, and R&D completed abroad) on the acquisition of market knowledge and technological knowledge? 2) What is the role of prior knowledge in these relationships? 3) What are the effects of the newly acquired knowledge on different growth outcomes? 4) What is the role of processes of knowledge transformation and exploitation in these relationships?

Addressing these issues has practical relevance for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). On the one hand, international expansion might provide small and medium-sized firms with additional knowledge, enriching their limited resource base. On the other hand, internationalization might spread the limited resource base of SMEs too thin and create internal coordination problems.

Longitudinal survey data from 885 Swedish international SMEs yielded the following results. First, downstream internationalization and upstream internationalization are important sources of new market and technological knowledge for SMEs. Second, while downstream internationalization directly brings new market and technological knowledge, the acquisition of new knowledge from upstream internationalization is enhanced by the firm’s prior endowment of knowledge. Third, knowledge acquired from internationalization contributes to a firm’s growth advantage in international markets and to its further internationalization, and it provides the basis for entrepreneurial actions such as venturing into new markets and reaching new international customers. However, the new knowledge base has no, or very little, effect on SMEs’ growth in domestic markets. Fourth, the relationships between knowledge acquired from internationalization and different growth outcomes are not accentuated by a firm’s knowledge management processes. These processes have only a direct effect on a firm’s growth advantage in international markets, its continued internationalization, and its entrepreneurial growth through the development and commercialization of new products/services in international markets.

Overall, the study suggests that internationalization promotes the acquisition of new market knowledge and new technological knowledge, which in turn contribute to the growth of SMEs, especially in international markets.

International Corporate Entrepreneurship among SMEs: A test of Stevenson’s notion of Entrepreneurial Management2015Ingår i: Journal of small business management (Print), ISSN 0047-2778, E-ISSN 1540-627X, Vol. 53, nr 3, s. 780-800Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Despite increasing attention devoted to international entrepreneurship, little is known about firm-level entrepreneurship carried out by established small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in international markets. We apply the opportunity-based conceptualization of “Entrepreneurial Management” by Howard Stevenson to international corporate entrepreneurship activities of SMEs. We hypothesize that the different dimensions of Stevenson's theory have a positive impact on SMEs' international corporate entrepreneurship. We test the hypotheses on a longitudinal sample of international SMEs. Our results show the expected positive effects of some, but not all, aspects of Stevenson's theory. Thereby, the paper suggests more precise boundary conditions of the theory and contributes to the literature on international corporate entrepreneurship by SMEs.

All about My Mother: Factors Influencing Women’s Entrepreneurship2019Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings, Academy of Management , 2019, Vol. 1Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Using data on all businesses started by mothers of young children in Sweden between 2000 and 2014, we investigate what factors are the most important drivers of entrepreneurship among mothers. We find that being unemployed or being an immigrant are important drivers of entrepreneurship among mothers. However, our findings show that the most important and primary determinant of entrepreneurship by mothers in Sweden is the amount of paternity leave taken by their partners. These findings suggest that in institutional contexts such as Sweden gender inequality is not a persistent feature of most households and that women can make career choices by negotiating with their partners who will make use of the parental benefits offered by the government.

Preserving Socioemotional Wealth in Family Firms: Asset or Liability? The Moderating Role of Business Context2013Ingår i: Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, ISSN 1042-2587, E-ISSN 1540-6520, Vol. 37, nr 6, s. 1341-1360Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We ask whether choices aimed at preserving socioemotional wealth (SEW) represent an asset or a liability in family-controlled firms. Specifically, we consider one major SEW-preserving mechanism—having as chief executive officer (CEO) a member of the controlling family—and hypothesize that this choice is (1) an asset in business contexts, such as industrial districts, in which tacit rules and social norms are relatively more important, but (2) a potential liability in contexts like stock exchange markets, where formal regulations and transparency principles take center stage. The results from our empirical analysis confirm these hypotheses.

All in the family? An exploratory study of family member advisors and firm performance2015Ingår i: Family Business Review, ISSN 0894-4865, E-ISSN 1741-6248, Vol. 28, nr 3, s. 227-242Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This exploratory study investigates the relationship between family members serving in an advising capacity and family firm performance. Integrating the stewardship and agency perspectives, we predict an inverted U-shaped relationship between the number of family advisors and family firm performance. We argue that the generation in control moderates this relationship such that family member advisors have a positive relationship with performance in first-generation family firms and an inverted U-shaped relationship with performance in later-generation family firms. Our empirical analysis on a sample of 128 Swedish family firms confirms our hypotheses. In the concluding section, we discuss results, contributions, and future research directions.

Entrepreneurial growth: the role of international knowledge acquisition as moderated by firm age2014Ingår i: Journal of Business Venturing, ISSN 0883-9026, E-ISSN 1873-2003, Vol. 29, nr 5, s. 687-703Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In line with repeated recent calls for research on specific forms of growth rather than on an undifferentiated notion of “total growth,” our study contributes to the understanding of entrepreneurial growth. By this we mean growth through expansion into new geographic markets and/or via the introduction of new products or services. Building on Penrose's theory of the growth of the firm and on the research streams she has in part inspired, we investigate the impact of knowledge acquisition from international markets on entrepreneurial growth both at home and abroad. We further suggest that the effects of international knowledge acquisition on entrepreneurial growth will vary with firm age. Utilizing longitudinal data on 138 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we find that the acquisition of knowledge from international markets fuels growth through market development, and that this effect is stronger for international expansion than domestic expansion. Our results also show that firm age negatively moderates the relationship between international knowledge acquisition and entrepreneurial growth via the introduction of new products or services. Specifically, international knowledge acquisition has a positive effect on growth via new products/services development in young firms, but a negative effect in mature firms. We assume this reflects changes over time in how international knowledge is managed.

    Abstract [en]

In this article the authors used longitudinal data on internationally active small and medium sized business enterprises (SMEs). In the country of Sweden, a small market country, internalization is a common occurrence. With that being said, the authors believe that Sweden is an appropriate context for their analysis and investigation. Following Westhead and others a six-year research period was selected. This responds to the call for assessing firm internationalization and growth over longer time periods.

International market exit and re-entry: An empirical study of export patterns of Swedish SMEs2016Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

I rapporten International Market Exit and Re-entry: An empirical study of export patterns of Swedish SMEs kartläggs svenska små och medelstora företags internationaliseringsmönster. (Baksidestext)

    Abstract [en]

In 2010, the European Union adopted the notion ‘smart’ in its new ten-year growth strategy Europe 2020 stating that Europe should become a smart, sustainable, and inclusive economy. The broad and policy-oriented concepts of smart growth and smart development are part of the strategy introduced as a response to the observed low growth rates of innovation and productivity across European regions. In all its essence, the growth strategy states that smart growth supports sustainable development, which is achieved by promoting research, innovation, and knowledge in order to attain regional economic growth. What is made less clear is how the concept of smart growth can be translated to fit a diverse set of rural regions. Other outstanding issues discussed in this paper relate to the possibility to measure and empirically address the outcome of policies for smart rural development. Hence, in this paper we conceptually analyse and bring together the ideas that underlie the logic behind policies for smart growth by focusing on smart growth from the perspective of rural regions. The paper also presents indicators of smart rural development and analyses their relevance in future empirical studies.

"Let’s Start An Online News Site”: Opportunities, Resources, Strategy, and Formational Myopia In Startups2012Ingår i: Journal of Media Business Studies, ISSN 1652-2354, Vol. 9, nr 4, s. 69-97Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This articles explores how factors present at the startup of online news enterprises influence their development and sustainability. Using entrepreneurship and management literature as a base, it presents and analyzes three case studies in which different arrays of organizational factors were present and how they affected the first three years of the organizations' activities. It reveals that "formational myopia"-pre-existing expectations and organizational objectives based on the entrepreneurs' past experiences-played important roles in their development and that the abilities of the firms to adapt their strategies and practices after establishment were crucial to their sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

This study tests Teece's conceptualization of dynamic capabilities in the context of small and medium-size firms competing in creative industries, in particular the European audiovisual production industry. This industry is characterized by immature and evolving markets where firms' dynamic capabilities are expected to lead to superior innovative performance. Using survey data from audiovisual producers in ten European countries we find that both sensing and seizing capabilities have a positive effect on firms' innovative performance. The effect, however, is curvilinear, and positive effects appear after when capabilities overcome a threshold level.

    Geographic diversification and the survival of born-globals2018Ingår i: Journal of Management, ISSN 0149-2063, E-ISSN 1557-1211, Vol. 44, nr 5, s. 2008-2036Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The staged internationalization model posits that firms internationalize incrementally over time. However, born-globals are less likely to follow a more gradual model of staged internationalization, and they must decide on the scope of internationalization at their founding to exploit entrepreneurial opportunities on a global scale. Because returns from international expansion must be considered along with the risk of failure, we propose that born-globals’ local industry conditions moderate the relationship between the scope of intraregional diversification (geographic diversification within a region) or interregional diversification (geographic diversification across different regions) and survival. Using a sample of 680 Swedish born-globals founded in 2002, 2003, or 2004 and followed until 2010; data from Swedish Customs; and archival performance data, we find that interregional geographic diversification increases—and that intraregional diversification decreases—the likelihood of failure, which declines further when born-globals undertake intraregional geographic diversification under higher environmental dynamism in the home country industry. Conversely, undertaking interregional geographic diversification even when the home country industry is munificent increases the likelihood of failure (marginally significant). The findings are robust to several alternative specifications.
