Enterprise wikis as a means of creating business value: The impact of the CIO2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Mass collaboration has been made possible through social networking tools likewikis. With features that support the principles wikinomics, wikis are enabling largenumber of people to participate in the production process without necessarily beingat the same physical location. Organizations and IT managers are beginning to har-ness this new technology in a way that will create business value for their companies, helping them to produce goods and services that are valuable for their customers. This research sets out to explore the business values of using wikis in enterprises, andhow the CIOs and other IT managers who are responsible for handling the IT/IS re-sources of their firms leverage wikis to create business value. This was accomplishedby examining collaborations on wikis from two different perspectives: Firstly, fromthe CIO or IT manager’s perspective where we gathered their own views about thebusiness values of wikis and also assess their own impact on creating those businessvalues. Secondly, we examined the business values of wikis from the user’s perspec-tive by gathering the views of different wiki users. The main contribution of this research is to identify if any, the business values thatare obtained from using wikis in enterprises and to ascertain the impact of the CIOon the business values that are being created.

Blended Spaces and Cross-channel Ecosystems2015Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2015 ACM SIGCHI Conference on Creativity and Cognition, ACM Digital Library, 2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper provides a contribution to creativity and codesign based on applying the theory of conceptual integration (also known as conceptual blending, or blending theory) to creative design and collaboration. Our approach is based on bringing the principles of conceptual blending and applying them to the creation of novel spaces, objects and services in creative industries. We couple this with the conceptualization of actor-driven cross-channel ecosystems as the extended digital / physical places where experiences occur.

User experience in cross-channel ecosystems2017Ingår i: HCI 2017 - Digital make-believe: Proceedings of the 31st International BCS Human Computer Interaction Conference (HCI 2017), 2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Recent developments in information and communication technologies have left interaction design and human-computer interaction (HCI) with something of a conceptual gap. The distinction between physical and digital spaces is increasingly blurred. Cloud-based services have enabled a separation of information content from device so that content can be accessed and manipulated across multiple devices and locations. The user experience (UX) frequently needs to deal with activities that transition across physical and digital spaces and ecosystems of devices and services. Designers can no longer prescribe the journey or curate experiences simply as isolated interactions. Instead, UX must be consistently spread across touchpoints, channels, and device ecosystems. Our contribution to the development of UX, interaction design, and information architecture is to appeal to the notions of cross channel user experiences and blended spaces. Information architecture is the pervasive layer that underlies interactions that cross services, devices and blended physical and digital spaces. Information architecture is the structure within which the UX unfolds. From this perspective, we highlight the importance of creating meaningful places for experience and navigation through blended spaces.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Internal Mobile Applications: Information integration with ERP systems2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The evolvement of technology within the business world has transformed both organizations and people involved. As the business world is rapidly changing it requires organizations to adapt to new trends to be able to compete and to gain competitive advantage. The widely developed and used mobile business-to-customer applications have generated the realization that the technology can be used by organizations for their mobile employees to gain competitive advantage. Therefore, we have investigated the functionality of information integration between mobile applications and ERP systems for mobile employees, and the benefits and challenges it has.

The research is an exploratory investigation about how the new trend within mobility is to be seen within the business world. With the use of an inductive and qualitative research approach, we started with no previous theories to get an understanding of the subject.

In the use of mobile business-to-employee applications, the most important information integration is the one between ERP systems and mobile applications since it is the organizational information that is needed for the mobile workers. The result of the research is that it is more common with a single, oneway integration in terms of either input or output between ERP systems and mobile applications. The more advanced two-way integration exists and is increasing in the area of internal use of mobile applications for organizations. Additionally, there are a lot of benefits to gain from when working with mobile applications for organizations, for example to increase the productivity of mobile employees. There are also challenges that need to be discussed before deciding to invest in enterprise mobility, for example security aspects.

Trying to become "The World’s Cosiest Airport": A Case Study on Customer Experience Management from a Service Delivery Network perspective2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The practical relevancy of Customer Experience Management is increasing. The research on the topic has still not found common ground in all areas. Most scholars still fail to see the advantage of adopting a broader perspective of Customer Experience Management and integrating factors that lie out of the focal company’s control into the scope of the conceptual framework. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the principal elements that constitute Customer Experience Management and explore what role the Service Delivery Network plays in this context and how it can be managed more effectively with the help of IT/IS. To explore the problem empirically, a case study approach was used. The author had the possibility to investigate the Passenger Experience activities of Tallinn Airport which has the unique goal of becoming "The World’s Cosiest Airport". Summarizing the findings of the thesis very briefly, the following things should be noted. First, the case study has shown empirically that passengers’ experiences with different companies in a Service Delivery Network interfere with each other. Second, the findings suggest that Partner Management is an important part of Passenger Experience Management. Third, IT and mobile IT in particular are good means to manage Passenger Experiences. Especially, mobile applications have a huge potential to support a customer’s self-management and co-create an experience. A potential avenue for future research would be 1. to take on the passenger perspective on the topic and 2. to replicate the study or at least parts of it at other airports to allow cross-case analyses.

“Tell new media that old media combined have about 80 million viewers right now”: A study about the social media impact on Swedish newspaper journalism2014Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the research is to investigate the impacts of social media on journalism. These aspects were investigated by interviewing journalists, working at Swedish newspapers. The areas covered was (1) personal information, covering personal social me-dia use as well the utilization of their employer. (2) Impact of social media on journalism, covering the use of social media in the execution of their work, perceived drawbacks and the importance of nonprofessional users. (3) Online versus offline content covering the as-pects of altering between the web-based online medium and the offline paper based news-paper and what the implications are in terms of news content. The focus of the research is Twitter and Facebook.

Background: The introduction of social media has created a new venue for news input, locally, nationwide and globally. Research has shown that the actual usage of other imple-mented interactive features is limited from the newspaper reader´s perspective. But the structure of Facebook and Twitter makes it possible for fast information transfer. The ma-jority of these users are nonprofessional journalists, providing user generated content in the form of knowledge and information.

Frame of reference: The theoretical framework of the thesis consists mainly of theory de-scribing what social media is and different functionality of various social media. The main contribution is the Social media design framework provided by Hansen, Shneiderman & Smith (2011), additionally providing a basis of usage of different social media. Secondly, re-search by Anders O. Larsson and others provide a basis for insights about online journal-ism in the aspects of utilization and appreciation of interactive features on newspapers from the newspaper perspective and the reader’s perspective.

Methodology: The primary date was collected through semi structured interviews with journalists with different degree of experiences concerning the use Twitter and Facebook in the context of journalistic work as well as privately. The secondary data was collected through relevant literature. Content analysis was performed in order to extract relevant in-formation from the qualitative data collection.

Conclusion: The conclusions of the thesis indicate that the journalists views Twitter and Facebook as just another mean for execution of journalistic work. If applying traditional journalistic principles, credible information and users will be found. This will provide use-ful news input. Secondly, Facebook provide more credible users because of its representa-tion of real life relations. On Twitter you have to establish credible relationships. The find-ings further indicate that a well-developed IS/IT strategy and supporting business model is beneficiary for journalistic utilization of Twitter and Facebook.

Web-based ERP Systems: With a focus on SMEs2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Web-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems deployed through theSoftware-as-a-Service (SaaS) model are a major disruptive technology in the fieldof ERP systems. The defining features of the SaaS are that they are hosted remotelyand are completely used through the web; they are subscription-payment basedand they operate on a multi-tenant fashion. This technological innovation redefinestraditional technical and economic ERP paradigms.

This Bachelor’s thesis aims through interviews with vendors, users and consultants,as well as by researching various academical and professional publications onthe subject of Web-based (SaaS) ERPs to study these pehomena, and produce a listof their benefits to SMEs. It also analyses their opportunities and challenges via anumber of interesting facts, thus allowing for thought-provoking observations andspawning of stirring discussions.

The benefits of Web-based ERPs were reported to be similar to the ones characteristicfor the On-premise ERPs. They furthermore included remote data access, costefficiency, flexibility, scalability, as well as the esublishment of a new customerdrivenrelationship with the ERP vendor. The major disadvantages of SaaS wereconsidered to be security, cost (in the long run), and customizability. These disadvantages, which were first reported years ago, are continuously dismissed by theadavncements and innovations made in Web-based solutions. Findings from previousstudies and trends suggest that issues of security, cost and customizabilityare gradually disappearing as technology improves and industry dynamics becomesmore customer-centric. Security, which was a major issue in 2007 slowlyfaded and is not regarded as the concern it used to be. From 2008 till now the issuesof customizability and TCO have been heavily disputed about Web-based ERPsolutions. The problem of customizability has also been found to be diminishingdue to technologically advanced capabilities of these systems; new systems haveemerged and old systems have improved enough to provide this feature. Cost hasnever been a transparent issue when it comes to IT investments and has beenshown to be higher in On-Premise solutions through the TVO approach whichlooks at other hidden and non-financial costs. All of the above sheds new light intothe once-‘static’ benefits and drawbacks of Web-based solutions, and provides afresh insight into this developing phenomenon.

The use of Information and Communication Technology in disaster management: The case of Cameroon2010Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The frequency of natural disasters and its negative consequences in terms of the number of people killed, property destroyed and negative environmental impacts caused in the affected communities constitute one of the basic foundations and motivations for the development and use of ICT and other means of preventing as well as responding to disasters in the world today. This is simply because disaster management constitutes an important part of any developmental framework. Unfortunately a majority of these natural disasters occur in developing countries where information flow is greatly hampered because the national actors in disasters lack the skills to use ICT to prepare for and to response to disasters in their communities. Current study aims at studying the use of ICT in disaster management in Cameroon-a less developing country south of the Sahara

To achieve the aim of this study, a quantitative research approach was chosen. A total sample of 150 organisations was selected from a population of 285 organisations within Cameroon, that are directly or indirectly involved with disaster management or developmental issues of any nature. In total 150 questionnaires were administered to these selected national actors by mail, internet, telephone and self-administration and 85 of the organisations respondended to the questionnaire.

After collecting and analysing the data, the authors came to the conclusions that; disasters occur in Cameroon on frequent bases causing lots of damages thus the need for ICT use in humanitarian logistics to move information and material. Results showed that national actors use the radio and local TV (CRTV) for disaster preparedness and the mobile phone for disaster response, while the internet and computer techonology, foreign TV, Fixed phone and fax had a very low usage rate or sometimes not used at all. The reason for low usage or no usage was due to problems encountered by national actors in an attempt of trying to use them. Against this background, the authors suggested a number of recommendations that could improve the degree of ICT usage. One of them was that the Cameroon government should partner with private sector firms to make ICT infrastructure available by investing more and improving on the telecommunication sector in the country. This will solve the problem of poor ICT infrastructure, poor radio and TV signals, limited internet connectivity accessibility and availability in Cameroon.

Social Networking Services: A Case Study in the Failure to Facilitate Knowledge Sharing in Organizations: A Case Study of Enterprise 2.0 Taolin Platform2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Social networking services are relatively new phenomena and they have attracted so much attention around themselves. These services have been seen by many organizations as a po-tential tool to facilitate knowledge sharing. However, very few have successfully adopted such services. Many problems which lead to failures arise when it comes to developing and implementing social networking services with the goal to facilitate knowledge sharing. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the failure of one social networking service to satisfy the knowledge sharing needs of the organization that has developed and implement-ed it in-house.Interviews with three employees of the company were arranged. The interviews were done with time intervals in between. This gave us the opportunity to rearrange the questions that were going to be asked to the next interviewee. The interviews were really helpful and gave us a good insight of the problem with the development and implementation of the social networking service that the organization was facing. After the interviews were conducted, a questionnaire was elaborated and sent out to the employees in the organization. The results we came up with were really interesting. A table with failure factors for the so-cial networking service used in the organization was made and a model suggesting the steps an organization should follow for the successful development and implementation of a so-cial networking service that facilitates knowledge sharing internally was developed. We found out that the failure was not in the social networking service itself but in the way it was presented, positioned and communicated to the employees of the company. They never took the service seriously for its intended purpose which was knowledge sharing within the organization and that led to the cancelation of the project.

Biometrics: Attitudes and factors influencing a breakthrough in Sweden2005Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

Advantages and disadvantages regarding usage of wireless systems in a warehouse setting2005Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The potentials of Blockchain technology in logistics2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Background:           Blockchain technology is recently receiving a lot of attention from researchers as well as from many different industries. There are promising application areas for the logistics sector like digital document exchange and tracking of goods, but there is no existing research on these topics. This thesis aims to contribute to the research of information systems in logistics in combination with Blockchain technology.

Purpose:                  The purpose of this research is to explore the capabilities of Blockchain technology regarding the concepts of privacy, transparency and trust. In addition, the requirements of information systems in logistics regarding the mentioned concepts are studied and brought in relation to the capabilities of Blockchain technology. The goal is to contribute to a theoretical discussion on the role of Blockchain technology in improving the flow of goods and the flow of information in logistics.

Method:                   The research is carried out in the form of an explorative case study. Blockchain technology has not been studied previously in a logistics setting and therefore, an inductive research approach is chosen by using thematic analysis. The case study is based on a pilot test which had the goal to facilitate a Blockchain to exchange documents and track shipments.

Conclusion:             The findings reflect that the research on Blockchain technology is still in its infancy and that it still takes several years to facilitate the technology in a productive environment. The Blockchain has the capabilities to meet the requirements of information systems in logistics due to the ability to create trust and establish an organisation overarching platform to exchange information.

    Abstract [sv]

What is the Perception of Computer-Based Business Simulation Games as a Tool for Learning?2007Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

Computer-based business simulation games are rather commonly used tools for learning in business courses in Sweden. However, not always expectations of teachers are achieved with respect to the simulation game as a learning tool. There are number of aspects that students are not satisfied with when it comes down to the use of simulation game and as a result, a gap between these parties evolves. Thus, we have tried to identify the benefits and drawbacks seen by teachers and students and derived critical success factors for achieving higher learning outcome from the use of simulation games.

In order to do that, we have carried out 6 interviews with teachers across Sweden who have been using simulation games in their courses. Furthermore, student opinions were gathered through questionnaire and class observation.

It was concluded that teachers see the simulation game as a very good tool for learning. Still, students are not fully satisfied, since they are expecting more feedback and support from teachers when they are using the game. Further-more, although the game is supposed to give a good reflection of reality, not always it was seen so by students. Thus, it is important to communicate and introduce the game properly in the course as well as have an assignment that en-courage learning and helps students to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice that would be closely linked to reality.

Knowledge Management as a Strategic Resource to gain Competitive Advantage2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Even though knowledge management has progressed from an embryonic to an increasingly recognized discipline over the course of the last decade, the bulk of studies in knowledge management have been descriptive and focused on definitions and integrating existing definitions. There have been relatively few studies (mostly surveys) that focus on knowledge management in relation to other organizational factors (Zack, McKeen & Singh, 2009), and work in the area of knowledge management and competitive advantage has been found to be theoretically and empirically immature and underdeveloped (Chuang, 2004).

Therefore, aim of this research was to fill in the identified gaps by utilizing the resource-based view of a company to conduct an exploratory qualitative study to provide empirical and practical evidence regarding the relationship between knowledge management and competitive advantage. This was done mainly through interviews with knowledge management academics and practitioners in an attempt to have multiple perspectives on the matter to gain deeper understanding.

From the interviews, a number of observations were made. First, knowledge management can be used strategically to gain competitive advantage but this can only be done by introducing a successful knowledge management initiative. This calls for an implementation approach based on focus and measurement as principles and that takes into account strategy, organizational learning, culture and systems and technology as pre-conditional dimensions for a successful knowledge management project. In addition, these principles and preconditions all have to take the people into consideration as the people play a centre role in this system, being the ones that actually establish, run and maintain these mechanisms.

These findings are then synthesized into a knowledge management implementation model that may serve as a starting point for further research in successful knowledge management implementation. Practitioners may also use these findings and model as a tool for successful knowledge management implementation.

    Abstract [en]

This paper reports an investigation and assessment of the digital information, provided via multiple channels, for the 2015 World Exposition (Expo) in Milan. Using emerging theoretical constructs in cross-channel information architecture as a lens, the researchers examined aspects of the digital information ecology that supported the Exposition event. This study focused, firstly, on how well information and its structure maintain a coherence that is useful and meaningful to its target audience across various technologies and platforms. Secondly, it attended to the means and mechanisms for moving from one information artefact to another and it comments on the ease with which global audiences traversed the multiple channels that formed the information environment of Expo 2015.

E-learning management system for thesis process support from a supervisor perspective: The case of SciPro System at University of Rwanda2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

With the emerging use of technological interventions in education, e-learning systems contribute immensely in educational delivery. However, with substantial efforts from the Rwandan Government, there were still claims about the lack of online support systems for thesis process in Rwandan higher education, which significantly affect the quality of research. Furthermore, previously implementations of e-learning systems at University of Rwanda have failed because of a low adoption rate. This study follows the introduction of the learning management system “SciPro” used for supporting supervisors and students in thesis writing. The purpose of the study was to understand the adoption of the SciPro System in support of thesis process for bachelor and master’s programs from a supervisor’s perspective at University of Rwanda (UR). An embedded case study was used as a research strategy. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) was used as the theoretical frame of reference for the study. Data was collected from 42 workshop participants using a questionnaire. Moreover, convenient interviews and participant observations were conducted at 5 of the 6 colleges during and after system testing. A researcher realized that the current thesis process is still manual-based and there is no holistic computer-supported system for thesis related activities. Results from correlation analysis and regression analysis for the questionnaire showed that the facilitating conditions provided by UR were the key factor that would influence the adoption of SciPro positively. Effort expectancy perceived by supervisors proved to have a significant correlation to their Behavioral Intention to use the system. The study also revealed that there were other factors outside SciPro System, such as management support, Internet access, lack of a clear ICT policy and E-learning policy; and to motivate innovators and early adopters that should be considered throughout the implementation process to enhance adoption.

The adoption of open innovation in the start-up development process: A narrative inquiry on the mobile services industry in Sweden2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Start-ups face several issues and challenges in the course of their development as a compa-ny. Open innovation has been discussed in research for more than a decade as a concept, which can bring benefits to a company. Even though most of the research has been focus-ing on large enterprises, some researchers discuss also benefits for small companies like start-ups. Nevertheless, it can be observed that some start-ups decide to adopt the opposite of open innovation, namely closed innovation, through not sharing internal knowledge to the outside world. Hence, start-ups perceive the benefits of open innovation differently and decide accordingly whether to adopt open innovation or not. The purpose of this study is to explore if start-ups decide to actually do the former and what reasons they have to do so. Therefore, this study will further discover at what point in the development of their start-up and with whom they adopt open innovation. As an attractive industry for start-ups, the mobile services industry is selected as a scope for this study. Furthermore, Sweden is selected as the country of study, due to its reputation as one of the most innova-tive countries in the world.

A qualitative study has been conducted using in-depth interviews with founders and co-founders of start-ups to retrieve narrative stories about their start-up’s development from the first day of an idea to a scalable business, and their experiences and motivations in re-gards to the application of open innovation practices. The analysis of this study detects pat-terns among the interviewed start-ups and concludes that start-ups in the mobile services industry in Sweden adopt open innovation in each phase of their development process. Furthermore, these patterns include several reasons why the start-ups applied open innova-tion practices and with whom, which are changing over the course of their development.

Mobile ERP: A literature review on the concept of Mobile ERP systems2014Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Mobile Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is still a very young topic which is in the pro-cess of developing in practice and research. Reviews of the topic of mobile ERP are lack-ing. The purpose of  this  thesis  is  to  investigate how the concept of “Mobile ERP” has evolved by reviewing scientific articles on the topic from 1998 until June 2013. The total amount of articles we found when using the search term “Mobile ERP” was 246 articles and we could access 129 articles. These are the articles used for the literature review. We found, based on a framework used in previous studies for ERP that there are nine topic categories in which the articles can be divided and each category has a different evolution-ary level compared to the research area of “non-mobile ERP”. Mobile ERP has a signifi-cantly smaller number of results compared to ERP which had 886 articles in Schlichter & Kraemmergaard (2010). The nine topic categories are the following: Implementation of Mobile ERP, Management and Mobile ERP issues, Mobile ERP and Supply Chain Management, Optimisation of Mo-bile ERP, Mobile ERP and education, Studying Mobile ERP, The mobile ERP Market and Industry, The Mobile ERP Tool and Other. The topic with the most articles is “The Mobile ERP tool” followed by the topic “Other”, in which we have included both articles that have no relevance and articles that are very general and which cannot be categorized in only one category clearly. In third place comes “Optimisation of Mobile ERP” followed by “Implementation of Mobile ERP”, “Manage-ment and Mobile ERP issues”, “The Mobile ERP market and industry”, “Mobile ERP and supply chain management”, “Studying Mobile ERP” and last comes “Mobile ERP and ed-ucation” which is the only topic in which we did not manage to categorize any articles.

The impact of social networking technology on students2014Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Social networking includes social networking sites (SNSs) as well as apps. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the impact of social networking tech-nology on students.  The  research questions  focused  how university students experience  their  interaction  with  social  networking  regarding  advantages and disadvantages, and for what purposes they are using it personal, professional or study). A quantitative surveys study was used and data was collected through online questionnaires delivered via SNSs, e-mails and through delivery and col-lection  method. 122  valid  responses  were collected  and 17 invalid responses were discarded. The questionnaire framework was built by means of the con-cept of ease of use from Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the five values of Uses and Gratification Theory; “purposive value”, “self-discovery”, “maintaining interpersonal interconnectivity”, “social enhancement value” and “entertainment value”. The findings showed that 64% considered themselves to be positively influenced by SNSs and 27% to be neither positively or nega-tively influenced. Only 11 % considered that SNSs influenced them negatively. According to our findings, some of the most frequent advantages are keeping in touch with family and friends, cost and time efficient, easy to use and entertaining. And for the disadvantages, the responses were mostly time consuming, health  issues,  privacy  issues,  addiction  to  technology  and  cyber  bulling.  The majority of respondents reported using SNS firstly for personal use, secondly for study use and the professional use was the least selected. 88% of the respondents thought that it is easy to use SNSs. The purposive value of SNS use was to get information, the self-discovery value to learning about oneself and others, for the maintaining interpersonal connectivity, to stay in touch, and for the entertainment value, it was to pass time away when bored. The results indicated  that  the  social  enhancement  value  was  not  very  important  for  the  respondents.

An Approach for Designing Management Support Systems: The Design Science Research Process and its Outcomes2009Ingår i: Proceedings of DESRIST 2009: The 4th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Technology, Malvern, PA, USA, New York: ACM , 2009Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Design science research involves creating and evaluating innovative methods and approaches to be used in design practice. We present an approach to be used in the process of designing Management Support Systems (MSS). The nature of managerial work makes the design, development, and implementation of MSS a major challenge. The MSS literature suggests that determining MSS requirements and specification of MSS are the most critical phases in MSS design and development. We present an approach that can be used as a guide for MSS design, with a primary focus on MSS requirements determination and how requirements can be fulfilled using information and communication technologies (ICT). The approach builds on Quinn and associates’ competing values model (CVM) of organizational effectiveness. The approach can guide MSS designers in designing MSS that support different managerial roles, i.e., the development of MSS that support managerial cognition, decision, and action.

    Abstract [en]

Design science research is an essential part of IS research since the field should not only try to understand how the world is, but also how to change it. We argue that the aim of IS design science research should be to develop practical knowledge not only for the design of novel information technology, but also for IS governance and management. Whereas at least some methodological support exists for researchers engaged in IT-centric design science research, limited support is available for researchers who want to develop design knowledge and theory for IS governance and management. To overcome this shortcoming, we suggest a socio-technical IS design science research approach. The approach has four main activities: 1) identifying problem situations and desired outcomes, 2) reviewing extant theories, knowledge and data, 3) proposing/refining design theory and knowledge, and 4) testing design theory and knowledge. The applicability and usefulness of the proposed approach is shown by means of a design science research project concerning IS integration in the context of mergers and acquisitions.

Towards a Design Science Research Approach for IS Use and Management: Applications from the Areas of Knowledge Management, E-learning and IS Integration2008Ingår i: Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST 2008), 2008, s. 111-131Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Design science research is an essential part of IS research since the field should not only try to understand how the world is but also how to change it. We argue that the aim of IS design science research should be to develop practical knowledge not only for the design and improvement of IS but also for IS use and management. Whereas substantial methodological support exists for researchers engaged in behavioral IS research, only limited methodological support exists for researchers with the ambition to develop new IS design theories and new IT artifacts. For the development of design theories for IS use and management the methodological support is even weaker. To overcome this shortcoming we suggest an approach for design research on IS use and management. We give three examples of the proposed approach in use by applying it to the areas of knowledge management systems, e-learning and IS integration.

    Abstract [en]

Online education in institutional contexts means new organizational problems. The fact that universities need to change to accommodate the impact of technology on learning is already known and accepted. Coping with changes from adoption until institutionalization of online education represents a formidable management challenge for universities. Online education, under the umbrella of e-learning was perceived by several early researchers as an innovation per-se, "established and embedded" in educational institutions. Nevertheless, the Department for Education and Skills of UK insists that e-learning is not embedded at any stage of education. The focus was strongly set on technological, practical and pedagogical aspects but there are relevant reports about failures in embedding innovations in educational institutions. The institutional lack of strategies to cope with international students and new technologies as well as supporting for future online developments clearly appeared in recent studies. Competition in the market of Higher Education has pushed universities towards the adoption of sophisticated organizational practices to ensure effectiveness. These new institutional models require changing traditional functions and roles, as online education does not usually fit into the existing university structure. The transition from on-campus to online education evolves in new roles, either in the pedagogical or in the administration domains. Organizational factors, more than teachers and students attitudes or technological features seem to mark the differences in the general perception about technology-mediated education getting successfully embedded in institutional new programs, roles, procedures, culture and structures. The aim of this paper is to revisit the existing theoretical background about the process from adoption until institutionalization of online education and explore the needs for further research. The overall purpose is to encourage researchers to fill the gaps of knowledge helping university managers to address a more clear understanding of the individual and organizational interactions that influence the development of strategies and institutionalization of emergent online educational initiatives. Exploring the current theoretical background it could be found that IT-innovation adoption models describe very extensively organizational issues, but they mainly take into account educational innovation take-up, adoption and implementation as isolated stages. They focus on factors and prescribed practices, but not on the human interactions during the transition from individual adoption until institutionalization. The disconnection between individual and organizational IT adoption research was remarked by the Diffusion Interest Group in Information Technology (DIGIT) in their 2004 conference. Since then, several authors have claimed for a better understanding of this linkage. The lack of clearness about the phenomena and a description of how individual and group-level processes enable and/or hinder the development of organizational routines, were reported as a still under-developed topic and according to the findings of this review it seems to be still an ongoing theme. Consequently, under the circumstance of the transformation that universities are undergoing, the need for a systematic study analyzing the implementation of emergent IT innovations in education appears as significant. Particularly, the process from its adoption at individual level until its institutionalization and the linkage between individual and organizational purposes need to be addressed.

Professors' driving and limiting factors for the adoption of e-learning in higher education within Argentine context2008Ingår i: Proceedings of X International Conference on Engineering and Technology Education, Brazil, 2008, s. 264-268Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Implementing e-learning needs an accurate understanding of the users requirements to be met but we also felt that higher education professors have driving and limiting factors that encourages or prevent themselves in facing the first step in e-learning. This scenario was explored by designing and distributing a questionnaire among professors from engineer careers at National Technology University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We selected them taking into account different formation backgrounds in order to avoid biases in answers. We then performed a comparative analysis and it was shown that 95% of them were very or rather positive towards e-learning; their main purposes to use it were related with improving interaction and not technical facilities. Driving factors were mainly the search of pedagogical improvements. Barriers were both individual concerns (lack of technical knowledge and time) and institutional (lack of incentives and technical support).

Online Education in Universities: Moving from Individual Adoption to Institutionalisation of an Information Technology Innovation2013Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes and analyses the move from individual adoption to institutionalisation of an information technology innovation: online education in universities. The study focuses on the processes that took place within two universities, one in Sweden and the other in Argentina, regarding online education adoption and the organisational changes developed.

The aim is to contribute to the understanding of individual and organisational strategies for the institutionalisation of the innovation. To achieve this aim, three research questions were posed. The first focused on the way in which teachers influence the adoption processes. The next addressed the changes and interactions at the individual and institutional levels resulting from these processes. The third question deepened into the methodological practices that can harmonise stakeholders‟ objectives and the conflicting interests regarding online education initiatives. Innovation theory, complemented with organisational theories provided the foundation for the description and analysis of the information technology innovation and the adoption processes.

The results of analysing and interpreting the collected data from the two universities in two different countries (Sweden and Argentina) showed that the adoption processes appeared to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The iterative nature of the appropriation and the constant “newness” of the information technology innovation may be plausible explanations for the phenomenon. Though the change has not yet become an integral part of the formal core of the institutions, it has been a great achievement considering the universities‟ structure, culture and resources.

The contributions provide complementary and pluralistic insights into the research field of Information Systems, for both theory and practice, as well as into higher education managers‟ decision-making. Furthermore, the knowledge contribution of the thesis could be applied to implementation of information technology innovations in other organisations with similar characteristics as the studied higher education institutions. Such characteristics are, for example, to be complex and knowledge intensive.

Interactions at macro and micro organisational levels could be modelled as the cyclic linkage between sensemaking outcomes and institutionalized structures. A higher level of theorization resulted in a meta-theory model to describe and explain the linkage itself within the perspective of adaptive structuration theory.

Regarding practice, scholar-engaged research allowed conflicting interests to be reconciled by changing the existing practices through sensemaking and negotiation among stakeholders in an ongoing implementation. As an overall conclusion, online education is still far from being fully institutionalised. After four years of technological and contextual changes during the research development, a positive shift can be seen in teachers‟ attitude towards online  education. They show more confidence in working with constantly improved virtual environments. Nevertheless, there are still key factors that need to be faced regarding online education adoption and institutionalisation. These factors are of a strategic nature and the way to handle them seems to be more political than technological or pedagogical.
