    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the basic principles and introduction of the Hoshin Kanri (HK) strategic management system, as related to the management practices in manufacturing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

    Design/methodology/approach – This paper reports the findings from the introduction of HK to four manufacturing SMEs by following an assistance support-based research approach where teams of coaches and researchers observed and learned from the introduction phase. The overall design of the project is theory building and learning oriented.

    Findings – It is suggested that the successful introduction of a strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs has to balance the inherent level of formalization therein, with the individual company’s management practices. Based on HK as the strategic management system, pDCA is proposed as an alternative approach to the introduction, matching differences in management practices.

    Research limitations/implications – The explorative nature of this research provides room for subsequent studies by elaborating the knowledge on the introduction of strategic management systems in SMEs.

    Practical implications – Awareness of the existing managerial practices is essential when introducing a new strategic management system in manufacturing SMEs. Such awareness is the starting point of customizing the introduction, so that proper levels of engagement and flexibility can be balanced with increasing systematic formalization, and optimized adequacy.

    Originality/value – Following an assistance support-based research approach the result of this research project is summarized in the iterative pDCA model emphasizing engagement and flexibility when incrementally introducing strategic management systems in SMEs. This model addresses a hitherto under-researched topic in strategic management.

    In the late 1980's the strategic planning literature was criticized by learning oriented advocats, arguing that the emphasize must be more on the ongoing construction of a strategic dialogue, downplaying the use of formal structures and plans (cf Mintzberg, 1987, 1994 and Ansoff, 1991). As a response to this debate, the strategy as a practice (S-AP) perspective emerged in the late 1990’s (Jonson et. al., 2003; Jarzabkowski et. al., 2007). This represented a change of focus to "the doing of strategy", driven by the belief that, in order to understand strategic practices in organizations (including both planning and learning aspects), we have to dig deeper, into the micro-foundations of strategizing. In this paper we conceptualize our methodological reflections on an ongoing project on strategicm practices.From a S-A-P perspective have co-produced knowledge on the strategy process and its planning practices with two medium sized companies during a period of more than three years. We specifically discuss two related issues.

    The first issue focus on how the deep and detailed aspects of strategic practices should be reached over time in a coproduction project. In the paper we develop and use a methodological matrix, divided in actors (continuum from individual to collective) and arenas (continuum from "front stage" to "back stage" studies) (Goffman, 1974) in order to structure our conclusions. The second issue focus on the construction of roles in co-production projects. In such projects in which the researcher is occupied by a continuous need to construct value for the interacting partner, in order to build and withhold trust. In this context the researcher has to develop a fine sense of judgment in order to choose value creating role(s). In the paper we identify a repertoire of roles taken over time and discuss outcomes in relation to these different roles from the perspectives of both practitioners and the academic community.

    Abstract [en]

    The article analyzes how social capital social networks and trust is created, addressing different levels of economic organization. Contrary to much literature on trust and social capital, the article also generates a role for policy efforts in creating social capital. It argues that social capital at the level of a national industry may accumulate when social learning processes centered around a few formalized economic networks change the dominant beliefs of managers. Core groups of succesful social capital investors may thus inspire industry-wide imitation, as well as drawing local firms into investment processes. The paper supports its theoretical observations by three empirical case studies of economic networking within the Swedish furniture industry. In this industry, which is poor in social capital, political efforts to promote economic networking may be an appropriate way of facilitating bottom-up institutional change.

    Abstract [en]

    This article investigates organisational responses to the 2008 economic crisis within a group of seven subcontractors in the Swedish heavy vehicle industry. Although the firms had similar exposures to the crisis their performances varied extensively. One year after the crisis began, some firms were still encountering financial problems, yet others had orchestrated a recovery that was generating healthy cash flows. Evaluation of in-depth interviews with key organisational members and standardised financial indicators suggests that the subcontractors' performances in the crisis were determined by their ability to attain and evaluate “deep knowledge” from stakeholders and “wide knowledge” from other external actors. Findings demonstrate how subcontractors' performances in an economic crisis are related to the implementation of dynamic capabilities and indicate how existing research on crisis management can be extended.
