Contextualizing small family firms: How does the urban-rural context affect firm employment growth?2015Inngår i: The Journal of Family Business Strategy, ISSN 1877-8585, E-ISSN 1877-8593, Vol. 6, nr 4, s. 247-258Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies the effects of family governance and ownership on firm employment growth, extending existing knowledge by including in the analysis the regional context in which firms are located. We create a regional taxonomy to capture the urban–rural dimension and combine this with the corporate governance structure of the firm. Our results show that, being a family firm per se does not influence employment growth. However, when corporate governance structure and regional context are combined, the urban–rural context influences family firm and nonfamily firm employment growth differently, with family firms exhibiting greater employment growth, compared with nonfamily firms, in rural areas.

Access to banks and external capital acquisition: Perceived innovation obstacles2018Inngår i: The annals of regional science, ISSN 0570-1864, E-ISSN 1432-0592, Vol. 61, nr 1, s. 161-187Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We examine whether low access to banks is perceived as problematic when obtaining financial capital for innovation activities. Data on innovation obstacles from the Swedish Community Innovation Survey are combined with geo-coded data at the firm level, which allows us to proxy access to external capital by the Euclidian distance from each firm to its nearest bank and the supply within a radius of five kilometres. The results indicate that both a longer distance to the nearest bank and fewer banks in the vicinity are related to experiencing greater difficulties in obtaining external financial capital for innovations.

Access to financial intermediaries and external capital acquisition2017Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

We examine whether low access to financial intermediaries works as an obstacle acquiring financial capital for Swedish firms by using information from the Community Innovation Survey indicating whether firms perceive the acquisition of external capital to be difficult. This perception is explained by the distance to the firms’ nearest financial intermediaries and their total local supply. The results indicate that the distance to banks is related to a larger problem of obtaining external financial capital in rural areas.

Roots to grow: Family firms and local embeddedness in rural and urban contexts2019Inngår i: Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, ISSN 1042-2587, E-ISSN 1540-6520, Vol. 43, nr 2, s. 360-385Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The present study analyzes the nexus among business growth, ownership structure, and local embeddedness—that is, the involvement of economic actors in a geographically bound social structure—in rural and urban contexts. This work combines regional economics with studies on family business and firm growth and uses a coarsened matched sample of privately held Swedish firms. The findings indicate that family firms benefit more than nonfamily firms from local embeddedness and as such they achieve higher levels of growth and that this effect is more pronounced in rural areas. Research implications are shared in the Conclusion section.

    Innovation Policy Instruments2007Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The Lisbon Agenda that was launched in 2000, and had a set time-period of ten years. The purpose of the Lisbon Agenda was to make the EU the most competitive, knowledge-based economy in the world, and at the same time preserving, or even improving social cohesion and maintain environmental sustainability. The Lisbon Agenda had a large number of goals, in both quantified and qualified measures, in different areas. The main instrument that was put forward was the open method of co-ordination (OMC) that includes indicators, benchmarking, peer pressure, and best practise demonstrations.

The forthcoming Lisbon Agenda will certainly need new approaches, and new instruments. One of the areas of instruments that can be further explored is innovation policies where the use of R&D and human capital is enhanced. Human capital is a natural part of a knowledge-based economy, and has positive impacts on growth, and jobs in the economy. Innovation policy instruments are diversified and are integrated in many areas of an economy and on many levels, which make them ideal for the next Lisbon Agenda. The instruments can have a general or specific characteristics and some span over the two characteristics.

Accessibility to human capital and new firm formation2011Inngår i: International Journal of Foresight and Innovation Policy, ISSN 1740-2816, E-ISSN 1740-2824, Vol. 7, nr 1/2/3, s. 7-22Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the impact human capital has on new firmformation, traditionally expected to have a positive influence. Since humancapital is partly spatially bounded, the size of local accessibility to humancapital is expected to have a larger impact than regional and nationalinteraction. The empirical analysis is based on data on new firm formationfor Swedish urban areas and accessibility to human capital. In the analysis, the urban areas are divided into several groups. The results indicate that itis the local accessibility to human capital that has a positive impact on new firmformation.

One cow per poor family: effects on consumption and crop production in Rwanda2017Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

A random sample of households in Rwanda are used to estimate the effects of the one cow policy on consumption and crop production during 2010-2014. A first-differenced model that takes into account the selection bias and placement effect associated with the policy and heterogeneity across householdsis estimated. Findings show a positive effect of receiving a cow on crop production, indicating that fertilizers provided by the cattle has enabled households to increase their agricultural production. Findings also point to the importance of knowledge and experience of rearing livestock for the outcome on consumption to realize.

    Abstract [en]

This study estimates the effects of the one cow policy on per capita consumption and the value of per hectare crop production in Rwanda using a random sample of households observed twice (2010 and 2014). A model that accounts for heterogeneity across households and the selection bias and placement effect associated with the policy is estimated. Findings show that receiving a cow has a positive effect on crop production indicating that the cattle has enabled households to become more productive on the farm. Results point to the importance of household's knowledge and experience of rearing livestock for the outcome of receiving a cow.
