Thesis Proposal: A Method for Information Classification2017Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In the highly digitalized world in which we live today, information and information systems have become key assets to organizations.  These assets need to be managed properly because it is difficult to safeguard assets that an organization does not know exist and does not know the value they offer. In an Information Security Management System (ISMS), asset management is an important activity as it aims at identifying, assigning ownership and adding protection to information assets. Within asset management, one activity is information classification that has the objective to ensure that information receives an appropriate level of protection in accordance with its importance to the organization. In practice, this is usually done using a classification scheme, and the result is handled as input to the risk analysis. Information classification is a well-known practice for all kind of organizations, both in the private and public sector, and is included in different variants in standards such as ISO/IEC 27002, COBIT and NIST-SP800.

However, information classification has received little attention from academia, and many organizations are struggling with the implementation. Little is known about the reasons behind why it is problematic, and how to address such issues. Furthermore, the existing methods, described in, e.g., standards do not provide a coherent and systematic approach to information classification. The short descriptions in standards, and literature alike, leave out important aspects needed for many to adopt any kind of information classification. For instance, there is a lack of detailed descriptions regarding (1) overview of procedures, and concepts, (2) which roles are involved in the classification, and how they interact, (3) how to tailor the method for different situations and (4) a framework that structures and guides the classification. If information classification is not implemented in an organization, the organization might not know what information they possess, what the value of the information is, but even if it is implemented, an unclear approach can lead to information being under or overvalued, which, in turn, lead to under or overprotected information.

This thesis aims to increase the applicability of information classification by devising a method for information classification in ISMS that draws from established standards and practice. In order to address this aim, a Design Science Research (DSR) study has been performed in five cycles. The contributions so far include an identification of issues and enablers for information classification and propose a component-based method for information classification. Furthermore, eighth design principles underpinning an information classification method are presented. Additionally, an outline for further research is provided, where the objectives are to further develop the method by addressing the context around information classification (the risk analysis and security controls), and by adding usage views to the method. Finally, a security declaration as an addition to the information classification method is outlined as a complement for tying security controls to the information classification scheme.

Reference Implementations - Usages And The Quest For A Definition2014Inngår i: EURAS Proceedings 2014: Cooperation among standardisation organisations and the scientific and academic community / [ed] Ivana Mijatovic, Kai Jakobs, Aachen: Wissenschaftsverlag Mainz , 2014, s. 17-31Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a systematic literature review performed to investigate if there is a prevailing definition of reference implementation in the standards community, and how reference implementations are referenced to be used within the standards community. The literature review targets all electronically available core journals and conferences in the field, and the results are classified according to a framework introduced in the paper. We found that there is one definition that focuses on conformance testing, but the results from the literature review show more uses of reference implementations such as when developing standards, when implementing them, and when developing products.

Qualitative experiences of personalization algorithms: The strategies used by university students (to counteract ideological homogeneity) when navigating social media feeds and their experience with personalization algorithms.2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – At the beginning of this year the number of social media user worldwide was recorded to be at 3.80 billion and is estimated to keep rising (Kemp, 2020). Along with this connectivity, new concepts have been acknowledged that have caused some controversy. These concepts have been named echo chambers and filter bubbles. This study investigates how social media users experience personalisation algorithms and the perceived existence of filter bubbles and echo chambers on various social media platforms and channels. Furthermore, it explores to what extent these users make use of strategies when navigating their social media feeds and if they believe that said strategies have any effect on personalisation algorithms, filter bubbles, and echo chambers.

Method – Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 participants currently studying at Jönköping University. The interviews were then transcribed and analysed using a thematic approach.

Findings – The perception of students at Jönköping University is that filter bubbles and echo chambers exist in a varying degree of visibility and commonality depending on the situation and medium. These are also experienced to be interconnected with personalisation algorithms. The experience of personalisation algorithms is mainly positive, as it allows the users to easily navigate the feed but negative implications are also mentioned.  These are isolation, the negative strengthening and creation of filter bubbles or echo chambers. However, the algorithm is not believed to be the only thing responsible for the creation. The users believe that their own navigation and strategies can have such an effect. The strategies that users use are (1) Passive navigation, (2) Source evaluation, (3) Multiple source searching, (4) Responsibility taking, and the (5) Creation of filter bubbles. The effect these have on filter bubbles, personalisation algorithms and echo chambers is helping, to an extent, alleviate some of the negative effects that these are experienced to have. However, the passive navigation and creation of filter bubbles have a somewhat opposite effect as they help the creation or maintaining of filter bubbles and personalisation algorithms.

Implications – The findings in this study build on existing evidence of echo chambers being more easily formed when the topic of discussion is of a political nature, as it is described by Barberá, Jost, Nagler, Tucker, and Bonneau (2015) in their research on how echo chambers form on Twitter. Furthermore, these findings could be considered to disagree with the research of Dubois and Blank (2018) who found that people who had a high political interest were less likely of ending up in an echo chamber. Although, due to their research taking all media into account, such as television, radio, newspaper, and so forth, while the current study is focused on social media alone the comparison is a bit more difficult to make. Finally, in the study made by Seargeant and Tagg (2019), it was concluded that the personalisation algorithms are not the sole contributor to filter bubbles forming on Facebook and that the users play a key role in how their online environment is shaped. The results of this study build on their research that the users do use strategies when navigating that affect what is being shown to them on their social media feeds. However, the participants of the current study claimed that the algorithms played a pretty large role too, which is not quite in line with the research conducted by Seargeant and Tagg (2019).

Limitations – The generalisability of this study is limited due to the small sample size chosen to conduct this study, although instead, it provides deeper insight into the relationship between humans and their social media platforms and channels. Moreover, a bias that should be acknowledged is that when conducting interviews there is a risk of encountering response bias, which is when the participants assume the purpose of the study and adapt their answers to fit what they believe the researcher(s) want to hear. To avoid this precautions were taken when designing the questions to make sure that they would not lead the participants in any directions.

Trying to become "The World’s Cosiest Airport": A Case Study on Customer Experience Management from a Service Delivery Network perspective2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The practical relevancy of Customer Experience Management is increasing. The research on the topic has still not found common ground in all areas. Most scholars still fail to see the advantage of adopting a broader perspective of Customer Experience Management and integrating factors that lie out of the focal company’s control into the scope of the conceptual framework. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the principal elements that constitute Customer Experience Management and explore what role the Service Delivery Network plays in this context and how it can be managed more effectively with the help of IT/IS. To explore the problem empirically, a case study approach was used. The author had the possibility to investigate the Passenger Experience activities of Tallinn Airport which has the unique goal of becoming "The World’s Cosiest Airport". Summarizing the findings of the thesis very briefly, the following things should be noted. First, the case study has shown empirically that passengers’ experiences with different companies in a Service Delivery Network interfere with each other. Second, the findings suggest that Partner Management is an important part of Passenger Experience Management. Third, IT and mobile IT in particular are good means to manage Passenger Experiences. Especially, mobile applications have a huge potential to support a customer’s self-management and co-create an experience. A potential avenue for future research would be 1. to take on the passenger perspective on the topic and 2. to replicate the study or at least parts of it at other airports to allow cross-case analyses.

The potentials of Blockchain technology in logistics2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background:           Blockchain technology is recently receiving a lot of attention from researchers as well as from many different industries. There are promising application areas for the logistics sector like digital document exchange and tracking of goods, but there is no existing research on these topics. This thesis aims to contribute to the research of information systems in logistics in combination with Blockchain technology.

Purpose:                  The purpose of this research is to explore the capabilities of Blockchain technology regarding the concepts of privacy, transparency and trust. In addition, the requirements of information systems in logistics regarding the mentioned concepts are studied and brought in relation to the capabilities of Blockchain technology. The goal is to contribute to a theoretical discussion on the role of Blockchain technology in improving the flow of goods and the flow of information in logistics.

Method:                   The research is carried out in the form of an explorative case study. Blockchain technology has not been studied previously in a logistics setting and therefore, an inductive research approach is chosen by using thematic analysis. The case study is based on a pilot test which had the goal to facilitate a Blockchain to exchange documents and track shipments.

Conclusion:             The findings reflect that the research on Blockchain technology is still in its infancy and that it still takes several years to facilitate the technology in a productive environment. The Blockchain has the capabilities to meet the requirements of information systems in logistics due to the ability to create trust and establish an organisation overarching platform to exchange information.

What is the Perception of Computer-Based Business Simulation Games as a Tool for Learning?2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Computer-based business simulation games are rather commonly used tools for learning in business courses in Sweden. However, not always expectations of teachers are achieved with respect to the simulation game as a learning tool. There are number of aspects that students are not satisfied with when it comes down to the use of simulation game and as a result, a gap between these parties evolves. Thus, we have tried to identify the benefits and drawbacks seen by teachers and students and derived critical success factors for achieving higher learning outcome from the use of simulation games.

In order to do that, we have carried out 6 interviews with teachers across Sweden who have been using simulation games in their courses. Furthermore, student opinions were gathered through questionnaire and class observation.

It was concluded that teachers see the simulation game as a very good tool for learning. Still, students are not fully satisfied, since they are expecting more feedback and support from teachers when they are using the game. Further-more, although the game is supposed to give a good reflection of reality, not always it was seen so by students. Thus, it is important to communicate and introduce the game properly in the course as well as have an assignment that en-courage learning and helps students to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice that would be closely linked to reality.

Knowledge Management as a Strategic Resource to gain Competitive Advantage2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Even though knowledge management has progressed from an embryonic to an increasingly recognized discipline over the course of the last decade, the bulk of studies in knowledge management have been descriptive and focused on definitions and integrating existing definitions. There have been relatively few studies (mostly surveys) that focus on knowledge management in relation to other organizational factors (Zack, McKeen & Singh, 2009), and work in the area of knowledge management and competitive advantage has been found to be theoretically and empirically immature and underdeveloped (Chuang, 2004).

Therefore, aim of this research was to fill in the identified gaps by utilizing the resource-based view of a company to conduct an exploratory qualitative study to provide empirical and practical evidence regarding the relationship between knowledge management and competitive advantage. This was done mainly through interviews with knowledge management academics and practitioners in an attempt to have multiple perspectives on the matter to gain deeper understanding.

From the interviews, a number of observations were made. First, knowledge management can be used strategically to gain competitive advantage but this can only be done by introducing a successful knowledge management initiative. This calls for an implementation approach based on focus and measurement as principles and that takes into account strategy, organizational learning, culture and systems and technology as pre-conditional dimensions for a successful knowledge management project. In addition, these principles and preconditions all have to take the people into consideration as the people play a centre role in this system, being the ones that actually establish, run and maintain these mechanisms.

These findings are then synthesized into a knowledge management implementation model that may serve as a starting point for further research in successful knowledge management implementation. Practitioners may also use these findings and model as a tool for successful knowledge management implementation.

On the Maturity of Service Process Modeling and Analysis Approaches2016Inngår i: 19th International Conference, BIS 2016, Proceedings, Leipzig, July 6-8, 2016. / [ed] Witold Abramowicz, Rainer Alt, Bogdan Franczyk, Springer, 2016, Vol. 255, s. 356-367Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Prior research has provided a number of approaches for the specification and analysis of service processes. However, little is known about their level of maturity regarding considered dimensions and characteristics. The present study represents a first step towards filling this gap. Drawing upon recent formalizations and delineations of service, a model for assessing the maturity of service modeling and analysis tools is derived. As part of a systematic literature review, it is applied to a set of 47 service blueprinting techniques to determine their maturity. The study’s findings indicate a high level of maturity regarding control flow and resource integration for most of the identified approaches. However, there are several shortcomings with respect to the input and output dimensions of the service process. The study proposes a set of research questions to stimulate future research and address the identified shortcomings.

Exploring the Current Theoretical Background About Adoption Until Institutionalization of Online Education in Universities: Needs for further research2010Inngår i: Electronic Journal of e-Learning, ISSN 1479-4403, E-ISSN 1479-4403, Vol. 8, nr 2, s. 73-84Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Online education in institutional contexts means new organizational problems. The fact that universities need to change to accommodate the impact of technology on learning is already known and accepted. Coping with changes from adoption until institutionalization of online education represents a formidable management challenge for universities. Online education, under the umbrella of e-learning was perceived by several early researchers as an innovation per-se, "established and embedded" in educational institutions. Nevertheless, the Department for Education and Skills of UK insists that e-learning is not embedded at any stage of education. The focus was strongly set on technological, practical and pedagogical aspects but there are relevant reports about failures in embedding innovations in educational institutions. The institutional lack of strategies to cope with international students and new technologies as well as supporting for future online developments clearly appeared in recent studies. Competition in the market of Higher Education has pushed universities towards the adoption of sophisticated organizational practices to ensure effectiveness. These new institutional models require changing traditional functions and roles, as online education does not usually fit into the existing university structure. The transition from on-campus to online education evolves in new roles, either in the pedagogical or in the administration domains. Organizational factors, more than teachers and students attitudes or technological features seem to mark the differences in the general perception about technology-mediated education getting successfully embedded in institutional new programs, roles, procedures, culture and structures. The aim of this paper is to revisit the existing theoretical background about the process from adoption until institutionalization of online education and explore the needs for further research. The overall purpose is to encourage researchers to fill the gaps of knowledge helping university managers to address a more clear understanding of the individual and organizational interactions that influence the development of strategies and institutionalization of emergent online educational initiatives. Exploring the current theoretical background it could be found that IT-innovation adoption models describe very extensively organizational issues, but they mainly take into account educational innovation take-up, adoption and implementation as isolated stages. They focus on factors and prescribed practices, but not on the human interactions during the transition from individual adoption until institutionalization. The disconnection between individual and organizational IT adoption research was remarked by the Diffusion Interest Group in Information Technology (DIGIT) in their 2004 conference. Since then, several authors have claimed for a better understanding of this linkage. The lack of clearness about the phenomena and a description of how individual and group-level processes enable and/or hinder the development of organizational routines, were reported as a still under-developed topic and according to the findings of this review it seems to be still an ongoing theme. Consequently, under the circumstance of the transformation that universities are undergoing, the need for a systematic study analyzing the implementation of emergent IT innovations in education appears as significant. Particularly, the process from its adoption at individual level until its institutionalization and the linkage between individual and organizational purposes need to be addressed.

    Abstract [en]

Implementing e-learning needs an accurate understanding of the users requirements to be met but we also felt that higher education professors have driving and limiting factors that encourages or prevent themselves in facing the first step in e-learning. This scenario was explored by designing and distributing a questionnaire among professors from engineer careers at National Technology University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We selected them taking into account different formation backgrounds in order to avoid biases in answers. We then performed a comparative analysis and it was shown that 95% of them were very or rather positive towards e-learning; their main purposes to use it were related with improving interaction and not technical facilities. Driving factors were mainly the search of pedagogical improvements. Barriers were both individual concerns (lack of technical knowledge and time) and institutional (lack of incentives and technical support).

User Acceptance in the Sharing Economy: An explanatory study of Transportation Network Companies in China based on UTAUT22017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

For many years, research on user acceptance of different technologies has been one of the most important topics within the field of information systems. In markets with the sheer size and uniqueness of the Chinese mobile economy fostered rapid development of sharing economy firms. Transportation Network Companies (TNC) can be regarded as a context of the sharing economy that focuses on personal transportation. Intrigued by the immense success of TNC and notorious competition between TNC companies Uber and DiDi in China, we study why users are susceptible to TNC. In this study, user acceptance is defined as intention to use TNC and the actual use of TNC. This study aims to examine what factors affect user acceptance of TNC in China and to what extent. By this, the thesis aims to provide TNC with adequate recommendations for success. The state of the art user acceptance model UTAUT2 has been used in this research with an explanatory purpose and a deductive approach. The UTAUT2 model consists of factors related to user acceptance, such as Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Hedonic Motivation, Price Value and Habit. These factors were individually tested with Simple Linear Regression to determine their influence on user acceptance. These calculations were executed upon quantitative data from an electronically distributed survey. Upon analysis of the findings, research and practical implications are provided such as managerial recommendations for how TNC can raise user acceptance and increase market share.

The 21 st Century Manufacturer:: The Role of Smart Products in the Transition from a Product to a Service Based Focus in Manufacturing Industries2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: Service industries have grown extensively over the past few decades on the back of globalized business trends. With increasing competition, product firms are struggling on product sales alone. Hence, both products and services are being bundled into what is known as offerings. Moreover, firms are looking into how they can improve their offerings to meet customer needs with the help of smart products. Smart products are described as products able to communicate and interact with other electronic devices as well as being self aware. One of these examples is conditional monitoring whereby the product is houses built in sensors to communicate with a back end ERP system providing the supplier a transparent view and real-time update into the status and service needs for both the product and customer.

Purpose: The aim of this thesis is to explore how smart products can help leverage services for product firms moving towards a service focus.

Method: In addressing the purpose a case study strategy was applied. An inductive approach was used, and interviews were conducted with two Swedish manufacturers, SKF and Atlas Copco. SAP, a software provider was also interviewed. Lastly, a qualitative approach was used and secondary data was collected through annual reports, as well as public company information.

Conclusions: Smart products show the capability of being able to record, transmit and act upon their behavior and usage. One major finding from the thesis is that smart products enable product firms to extend their service portfolios from a transactional to a relational standpoint through real time information feeds. This includes asset maintenance as well as monitoring and visibility into client operations. In addition, traditional product firms help product firm’s move towards a service strategy. Another finding of the thesis is that information visibility shows a positive co-relation with the service provider’s ability to take on more risk increasing service revenues and customer lock in and increase value co-creation. On the other hand smart products show to be challenging to product firms new to service development. These challenges include increasing initial infrastructure costs and high level of maintenance and complexity of the smart products.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This report is about the creation of a test system for development of a control system for a off the shelf RC-helicopter, which can be bought for about two thousand SEK. The test system consists of both electronics for controlling the helicopter and mechanical constrainer. The constrainer is used for mounting the helicopter so that it won´t crash.A circuit board including processor and sensors was manufactured. This was used for doing test of the different control algorithms. In this way were we able to analyze the quality of the sensors chosen, and what other sensors that could contribute to the control of the system.Basic helicopter control have been studied and presented in the report. Also different kinds of regulation algorithm were presented. These have also been implemented and tested in the test system.Experiments were made to identify how signals in the radio controller were mixed and translated before they were sent to the receiver, to be used to control the helicopter. This could later be used to translate the control signal from the regulators.Demonstrations, with the help of the test system, revealed the pros and cons of the different sensors and other hardware. Different regulation techniques were also tested and analyzed.

    Abstract [sv]

Towards cloud application architectural patterns: transfer, evolution, innovation and oblivion2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Recently, cloud computing has been gaining more and more popularity. Misunderstanding, misusing and underutilizing the cloud offerings, though, both from business and technical perspective still poses a threat to the success of cloud projects. On the technical side, one of the main reasons for success or failure is often the architectural design of the system – if a system is not architected the “cloud way”, using cloud’s special characteristics, the business benefits of such a system are often questionable at best. Software architecture through architectural patterns – reusable generic solutions to classes of problems – has for long been a good way to overcome the challenges of software architecture.

This paper focuses on establishing the grounds and highlighting the differences of the knowledge transfer regarding architectural patterns from building pre-cloud (“traditional”) software systems to building cloud-native systems.

The following 3 research questions drive this research:

RQ1.     How does the existing knowledge on architectural patterns relate to the cloud computing environment?

RQ2.     Which characteristics of architectural patterns make them suitable for the cloud environment?

RQ3.     How can architectural pattern evolution be documented effectively for usage in the practice?

In order to answer these 3 research questions and considering their focus is on utility i.e. creating a model which can be directly used in practice, the research uses design science research methodology (Peffers, et al., 2007-8). The emphasis in this methodology is iteratively building artefact(s) which can be improved and proven through practice that they actually help solving the problem at hand.

This research contributes with building 4 inter-connected artefacts:

    • a cloud applicability taxonomy of architectural patterns (CATAP) showing how applicable to a cloud environment an architectural pattern is and why;
    • a pattern-to-characteristics mapping showing how using an architectural pattern affects the resulting system in traditional and cloud environments;
    • a pattern form documenting the architectural patterns and the findings about them in the previous two artefacts;
    • a wiki site, APE Wiki, which makes the results available to the public for reference and discussion and improvement.

This research has a few interesting findings. First of all, the current architectural pattern knowledge seems to be very mature as no pattern has been found to have significantly evolved because of cloud – the architectural patterns are really generic and very flexible and only their effect on system characteristics has changed with the environment switch. On the other hand, a few new patterns were discovered and documented, which confirms the need for special attention to the new environment. Apart from that, the pattern-to-characteristics mapping provides interesting insights into which characteristics are most important for cloud and where there is a gap which may need to be filled.

This paper presents both the process and the results of the research as equally important as replicating and extending this research could help in maturing the results and the knowledge about architecting systems for cloud thus increasing the chances of success of cloud projects.

Challenges and Opportunities in Migrating to Web-based Informations Services: Perspective of Web-based Enterprise2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

For now, vastly growing Web-technology has matured enough to become an attractiveplatform for business applications and organizational information systems. Indeed, largeand small organizations are increasing their investment in Web-based Information Systems(IS) resources, such as Electronic Commerce, Intranets and Extranets. As DIWA(1999) explained that Web technology is often presented as a 'revolution' in informationsystem technologies in the business press, which could propel change from static, hierarchicalstructures to more dynamic, flexible and 'knowledge-based' organizationalforms. To the companies, more and more legacy information and database systems arebeing migrated to Web-based environments.

This research aims to analyse and advise enterprises to be Web-based enterprise withchallenges and opportunities.

During the research, the author investigated a company that were using the Web-based(applications made available via the World Wide Web) information service. For obtainingreliable conclusions and delivering valuable advises, various research methods wereadopted by the author including qualitative research methodology, analysis, interviews, and literature study. Data was collected through lecture review and in-depth interviews.

Undoubtedly, there are some troubles existed in migrating, such as technologies for restructureinformation system structure, resource distribution, benefit analysis, planningand management, operation and maintenance etc.

But still obviously, as the research shows that there are many benefits can be got followsthe implementation of Web-based solution, which includes improving efficiency, modernizing company IT environment, providing better IS/IT systems’ maintenanceand providing more agility and functionality etc.

    Abstract [sv]

Mobile application onboarding processes effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The growing popularity of smartphones in recent years has led to an increase in mobile application development and use. However, a large number of mobile applications are only used once before being removed. For companies and organizations to spend time and money on application development only to achieve low user retention rates is unsustainable. During their first interaction with a mobile application it is crucial that users find functionality and value quickly to avoid discontinuation of use. User onboarding is often implemented in mobile applications to aid in first time interaction, making onboarding processes subject of investigation for effect on user attitude towards continued use of mobile applications.

The study examined mobile onboarding processes and their effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications as well as the difference between onboarding processes effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications. The study was conducted within-subjects through a survey consisting of interaction with two prototypes with different onboarding processes and a questionnaire based on the technology acceptance model in order to investigate the variables of interest. The results of the survey were analyzed to measure the effects of the onboarding processes on the factors of the technology acceptance model and to investigate the differences between the onboarding processes.

The results showed that user onboarding has a positive influence on perceived usefulness, attitude towards use and intention to use. There was no significant difference between the different types of onboarding patterns effect on attitude towards continued use. The positive effects on attitude and intention to use confirmed that implementing onboarding processes in mobile applications could be beneficial for value proposition and user retention. The perceived usefulness proved to be the determining factor on attitude and intention to use.

A user experience framework for development of business intelligence systems2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This report describes the process and steps in detail needed to be taken in order to develop a theoretical user experience design (UX) framework for business intelligence (BI) systems interfaces. The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical framework based on existing research and combine it with empirical data gathered from professionals in BI systems industry in Sweden using the design science research method framework. With a younger generation of users moving in to key positions in organizations and enterprises higher UX demands are placed on BI systems interfaces. Companies developing BI systems lack standardized routines for implementing UX in their BI solutions. This shows that a framework consisting of UX methods and theory specified towards and applicable to development processes in Swedish BI industry is needed. This study shows the pervasiveness of the design science research method combining rigor from the knowledge base of existing research with relevance from an industry context. The study resulted in a framework being developed using iterative build-evaluate iterations a scalable UX framework for BI systems interfaces covering areas from planning and strategizing to implementation, maintenance and evaluation.

The Cloud Marketplace: A Capability-Based Framework for Cloud Ecosystem Governance2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Within the last five years, the market of cloud computing has shown rapid growth. However, despite the increasing popularity, researchers highlight numerous concerns regarding limited interoperability of systems hosted by different cloud providers as well as restricted customization of cloud solutions. In order to counter aforemen-tioned challenges, this study investigates the idea of introducing a marketplace for cloud services that leverage the service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm and of-fers software solutions, computing capabilities from cloud providers, components developed by third parties, as well as access to integration and audit services. The goal of the study lies in conceptualizing the idea and the evaluation of demand it may raise from the key cloud actors. In this regard, existing frameworks of cloud compu-ting and SOA contributed to the development of an initial model that was further improved through the interviewing process. The results of this study include a capa-bility-based framework for the cloud marketplace which not only clarifies the role and activities of the different actors but also contains the necessary features of the marketplace that are needed to ensure the proper workflow. In addition to that, the actors’ incentives and concerns regarding the marketplace were analyzed by applying SWOT-analysis. While the analysis revealed both positive interest and present de-mand among the actors, the identified weaknesses and threats highlight the need for further investigations in order to put the idea into practice.

Critical Success Factors in ERP Implementation2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

ERP systems link together an organization’s strategy, structure, and business processes with the IT system. The different way of handling the process of ERP implementation brings about many success and failure stories. By doing research on 1) what are the critical success factors in the implementation of ERP 2) why are these factors critical 3) what is the criticality degree of each factor 4) how important are these factors for customers, consultants, and vendors, the report aims to to identify the critical success factors in ERP implementation and understand the criticality degree of each factor from the perspectives of three parties (companies, consultants & vendors).

The research is proceeded with combined methods of qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative method for the interviews was chosen in order to get the information in depth. A semi-structured interview helps to provide some basic questions as guideline.

Furthermore, the quantitative approach contributes to manipulating the data for a more comprehensive analysis of empirical findings. This report states 11 CSFs (Critical Success Factors) from three points of view: strategic, tactical, and cultural. They are: Top management support and ERP strategy, Business Process Reengineering, Project team & change management, Retain the experienced employee, Consultant and vendor support, Monitoring and evaluation of performance, Problems anticipation (troubleshooting, bugs, etc.), Organizational culture, Effective communication, and Cultural diversity. By testing the perceived CSFs in six respondents (VSM Group, Scania, Sogeti, SYSteam, Oracle, and SAP), this report puts the 11 factors into three overall ranks (most critical, medium critical, and less critical), gains 3 other new critical factors (testing, business model, and client’s resources), and clarifies the diverse opinions about CSFs from customers/companies, consultants, and vendors. The most critical factors are Top management support, BPR, Project team & change management, and Effective communication. The medium critical factors go to ERP strategy, Consultant and vendor support, and Organizational culture. And the remaining 4 factors belong to less critical category.

For the differences, their agreement comes into the 4 most critical factors. In monitoring and evaluation of performance they agree on its less criticality. All customers, consultants and vendors have quite different opinions about the remaining 6 factors.

Reviewing the research questions, this report has fulfilled the main objectives and purpose. With better understanding of the comprehensive identification of CSFs and criticality rank of each factor, management will be able to judge and allocate essential resources that are required to bring ERP implementation into success.

Comparison of tool support for goal modelling in capability management2016Inngår i: Advanced information systems engineering workshops / [ed] John Krogstie, Haralambos Mouratidis, Jianwen Su, Springer, 2016, s. 29-39Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Capability management is attracting more and more attention in different research and industry areas. A starting point for implementing capability management in an organization often is to identify desired and existing capabilities in relation to the organization’s goals and to specify the capability. Due to the close relationship to organizational goals, tool support for capability modelling should also include capturing goal or even complete enterprise models. The aim of the paper is to contribute to an understanding what kind of tool support is suitable for capability management to capture enterprise goals. The focus in this paper is on goal modelling as part of capability modelling tools and aims at comparing modelling without computer support, modelling with tools enforcing a meta-model and modeling with support of a drawing tool. The comparison is based on experiments.

Chief Information Officer: A business strategy resource?2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims at describing the CIO role from the perspective of two interviews and the literature on the subject. Our research questions mainly focus on the actual work of a CIO and are answered by providing a framework on how to view the CIO and the influence of the CIO. Influence meaning both on business and IT strategy. We have answered what the CIO role implies and how it is used in different organizations. To do this we have scanned current literature and also conducted two interviews with CIO’s from completely different organizations and resources. A framework for understanding how the IT strategy and business strategy is linked with the CIO as a resource has been created and our interview findings are presented in this framework. We have also found that the CIO with little involvement in overall business strategy decisions has less influence on the IT strategy. This is ex-plained by the nature of the organization and the view of IT.

A CIO’s primary function could be to strategically align IT with business or to make sure that the IT systems runs flawless. These can be viewed as counterpoints but since the role today is changing from being operative to working more with strategic questions it is not a strange finding. The influence a CIO has in business strategy questions ranges from none to a lot, based on how the CIO role is defined by the organization. This is also well in line with the view of IT. When viewing IT as something that has the possibility to gain competitive advantage, IT gain more credibility, hence the CIO gains more influence on business strategy decisions. We also found that the CIO not only has the overall responsibility of IT in the organization, but also that s/he is supposed to work with questions of concern to the business. This forces the CIO to have an understanding of the end-customer, which in itself creates a better understanding for the business strategy. The CIO should work with questions that not only meet the current demand of the organization they support, but also future needs and potential opportunities where IT can be of specific interest.

E-marknadsföring och Traditionell marknadsföring: Möjliga kombinatoriska effekter inom bilindustrin2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A change is gradually taking place in the media industry. Traditional communication channels are being replaced by new, electronic, ones (Johnson, 2003). Segmented marketing is gaining popularity, as the mass-marketing model is becoming more or less obsolete (Kotler et al. 2001). At the same time, the consumers’ attention span is more divided than ever (Neff, 2004). These changes in the marketing environment demand a re-construction of the companies’ marketing efforts (Neff, 2004). They have to reach the customers online but also catch their scattered attention through different communication channels, both new and old ones (Halliday, 2004; Kotler et. al 2001).

The subject for this study is this combination of new and old marketing methods. We decided to focus on the car-industry, since that industry both uses e-marketing and combine it with traditional marketing. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate the possible outcomes of the use of emarketing in combination with traditional marketing, within the car-industry. We investigated this matter from a business point-of-view, focusing on companies operating in Sweden. In order to gather information to this thesis, we conducted six interviews with representatives from different car-companies. The empirical study also includes secondary data from one car-company, this because we could not get an interview with this company. We decided to use interviews since it is a preferable method when investigating opinions and personal views (Andersson, 1994). We have identified three main outcomes of the combination of traditional marketing and emarketing. The first one is that companies can encourage their customers to become active, using this combination. The customer is, passively, receiving the advertisement thought traditional media, but can then decide to become active by visiting the company’s echannels. When online, the customer can continue to be active by interact with the content on the website. The second possible outcome, that we have identified, is the opportunity for companies to engage the customer in a two-way communication. The company can start the dialogue, using traditional marketing channels and the customer can answer by using e-channels. The third possible outcome of the combination of traditional- and e-marketing is that companies can use material gathered with electronic methods in their traditional marketing.

IT för att bygga nätverk: Att komplettera personliga relationer med IT2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Globalization has lead to evolvement of teamwork between companies and their customers. One reason for this change is the growth of the IT community and the propagation of the Internet. This in turn has lead to faster communication within business networks and also a higher degree of integration between companies.

The purpose of this thesis is to describe IT can be used to develop and support networks formed around IT corporations. IT also aim at describing what impact usage of IT within personal networks has on usage of IT within business networks. The thesis is limited to IT-companies using IT artifacts, not only for communication within its organization, but also communicating with its customers and other IT-companies. The companies in this thesis are geographically situated in the same county.

A qualitative approach has been used based on our purpose to describe what is behind the choice to use IT artifacts in business networks. In the frame of reference we discuss subject such as the concept of network, hierarchies and companies boundaries, relations, communication and trust and security issues using IT. The empirical part consists of interviews with six respondents from six different IT companies. The companies represent a selection with both flat and hierarchic organizations. They operate on different markets and have different customers. Furthermore, they differ in boundaries, hierarchy and grade of integration with customers and suppliers.

The analysis show that all companies participate in one or more business networks. All but one respondent participate in one or more personal networks. All respondents stress the fact that the face-to-face meeting is till important and it can not be fully replaced by IT. IT is used as a complement in the business networks to easily stay in contact with other participants. However, all respondents are of the opinion that networks only based on IT is not possible based on the fact that deeper trust can not evolve without face-to-face meetings.

We conclude that IT is an effective tool complementing personal relations through the possibilities of information sharing without having to meet face-to-face. Nevertheless, the face-to-face meeting is yet important.

The power of platforms for software development in open innovation networks2011Inngår i: International Journal of Networking and Virtual Organisations, ISSN 1470-9503, E-ISSN 1741-5225, Vol. 9, nr 2, s. 140-154Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Firms seeking to satisfy customer needs should not only rely oninternal but also external sources of innovations for the development of theirproducts and services. Consequently, they need to shift their centralisedbusiness approaches by adopting the paradigm of open innovation and theconcept of platforms to harness the value of innovation networks. The aim ofthis paper is to examine the nature of platforms and how their adoption canstimulate external contributions of third-party developers. Based on the analysiswhich illustrated three platform adoption examples from Apple, Facebook andTwitter it is found that a platform approach and its four main elements(components, knowledge, processes and people) affect the entire innovationnetwork and its two dimension of translations. It is also found that each of thethree firms applied its own particular strategy while adopting the four mainplatform elements to suit its own innovation networks.

Towards a Process Framework for Managing Mass Collaboration Projects2009Inngår i: The 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS 32), Molde, Norway: IRIS , 2009, s. 1-24Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The developments of new technologies, the new scientific initiatives and thenew global market are giving rise to new phenomenon of collaboration, referred to asmass collaboration, which is mainly derived by communities and self-organizing, and isbased on the new Internet and Web 2.0 technologies, services and tools. To date, this newphenomenon has been researched from strategic perspectives lacking to address themanagerial practices to be applied for its adoption. This paper presents this newphenomenon of collaboration and the concept of Web 2.0, and its technologies, servicesand tools. The paper then proposes a process framework to be used for managing projectsand initiatives that specifically aim to adopt such collaboration form. The proposition ofthe framework is based on an illustration of a case study of a Danish municipality thatapplied mass collaboration on one of its development projects.

Balancing platform control and external contribution in third-party development: the boundary resources model2013Inngår i: Information Systems Journal, ISSN 1350-1917, E-ISSN 1365-2575, Vol. 23, nr 2, s. 173-192Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Prior research documents the significance of using platform boundary resources (e.g., APIs) for cultivating platform ecosystems through third-party development. However, there are few, if any, theoretical accounts of this relationship. To this end, this paper proposes a theoretical model that centers on two drivers behind boundary resources design and use – resourcing and securing – and how these drivers interact in third-party development. We apply the model to a detailed case study of Apple’s iPhone platform. Our application of the model not only serves as an illustration of its plausibility but also generates insights about the conflicting goals of third-party development: the maintenance of platform control and the transfer of design capability to third-party developers. We generate four specialized constructs for understanding the actions taken by stakeholders in third-party development: self-resourcing, regulation-based securing, diversity-resourcing, and sovereignty securing. Our research extends and complements existing platform literature and contributes new knowledge about an alternative form of system development.

    Abstract [en]

The discussion of the core identity of IS research is dominated by a heated controversy between the narrow and the broad views. The paper reviews different perspectives of the core identity of IS and stand in with the broad view. We argued that the constant changes and developments of IT capabilities dynamically drive the corefocus of IS research and thus a broader view should be adopted. The paper presents the recent changes and developments of IT in the social computing era where we have shown how recent developments have widened the scope of IS research by involving mutliple social aspects of investigation. We concluded the paper by proposing some properties of IS research in this era.

IT Konsulter: Den Framträdande Strategiska Konsulten2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The changed role of IT continuously influences organisational development, the individual and his role in the organization, different kinds of structures, management processes and strategies. One of the big concerns for IT firms is the need for IT consultants with enough experience to effectively and rapidly understand the business procedures of the firm in or-der to become a resource. In the classic IT-consultant role in the early days of IT, quite dif-ferent features were expected from them in their work procedures. The structure of how and which tasks they were expected to handle has undergone an indisputable transforma-tion. Today’s IT consultants are expected to know how to think in business strategic man-ners as well as the IT strategic manners. The need to formulate this role explicitly has thus emerged. So far it has been a case of implicit non-formulated way of handling this role. We present the implications of these regards, namely the Emerging Strategic Consultant (ESC).

The purpose of the thesis is to gain knowledge about obstacles and difficulties in the proc-ess of introducing the IT-consultants to their expected role as a Strategic consultant. We also intend to give recommendations for improvements based on the study when we find apparent correlations.

In order to fulfil this purpose and to present a reliable and valid report a qualitative analysis method was used. We wanted to get a deeper understanding of the chosen subject matter, therefore, we conducted interviews and questionnaires in the studied company, Systeam.

After having analyzed and compared the empirical findings with the theoretical framework we can point out that there are some problems concerning the new strategic role of the consultants and the potential difficulties relating to these. On the whole we can state that management at Systeam have made a really effective job when hiring the right consultants to fit into their company strategy, however with a great deal of intricacy. The empirical study revealed that finding these consultants is not an easy task and takes some effort from many people. However, along with the positive aspects we have found some problems re-garding the replacing and introduction of the consultants into their strategic role. Among the main problems can be named lack of adequate documentation in projects, different personal expectations and non-existence of any documented explicit strategy about how a consultant should work in order to achieve strategic alignment of Business and IT. Draw-ing from this we have gathered some recommendations for the company to consider, which will be presented in the study.

    Abstract [en]

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are among the most widely used large-scale information systems. Industry and students in IT-related subjects expect that ERP training is part of the studies during university education. However, traditional teaching materials use somewhat simplified multi-role and cross-organizational processes which do not fully reflect reality in enterprises, for example with respect to role-based permissions or coordination challenges in international organizations. This paper reports on an attempt to extend the SAP ERP GBI case study towards an international dimension. For this purpose an international ERP case study was developed which is presented in the paper with its didactical approach, the technical way how to implement the case study in SAP, and the teaching environment. The work is a joint effort by University of Rostock and Riga Technical University which has a focus on enhancing introductory ERP training for study programs in information technology and business informatics. One of the key features of the international ERP case study is that students of both universities work collaboratively on running business processes in the SAP ERP system. Evaluations suggest that the students appreciate the case study as suitable means to get an insight in real-life challenges connected to ERP use in an international context.

    Value-based and context-aware selection of software-service bundles: A capability based method2017Inngår i: Complex Systems Informatics and Modeling Quarterly, ISSN 2255-9922, nr 10, s. 21-37Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In many application areas, vendors offer to their clients combinations of software products and services, which can be considered as software-service bundles. The clients select a combination of software product and associated service best suited to their individual requirements and circumstances. The bundle usually has to be configured by the vendor to fit the specific situation of the client. When circumstances change, the software-service bundle or its configuration need adaptation. The article proposes a method helping clients to select the most appropriate combination or configuration. The method is based on information sharing between the vendor and client and also supports the continuous improvement of the solution in response to changing circumstances. The method applies principles and techniques of the Capability Driven Development to specify performance objectives and contextual factors affecting delivery of a software-service bundle. Application of the method is shown using an illustrative case of a data processing service from utility industries.
