Kulturen - är det en valfråga? [bloggpost]2022Other (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

On naming groups in the margins. Constructs of (dis)ability in the morning press across time in the nation-state of Sweden2021In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 23, no 1, p. 50-62Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to unpack the complexity of how (dis)ability is positioned through naming processes in the largest morning papers in the nation-state of Sweden. The data consists of articles during the period 1992–2016, analyzed through quantitative and qualitative approaches in three stages. The procedure has allowed for identifying the continuous conceptual development of overlapping categories and constructs. Questions about how (dis)ability is addressed and how it is positioned in relation to other marginalized groups have guided the analysis. The concept migration is used as a point of reference in order to compare parallel and intersecting identity-positionings and thereby to allow for further illuminating what shifts in identified constructs imply for the area of identity scholarship. The findings highlight a development towards a diversified vocabulary and the formation of contextually bound constructs of functionality across areas in which different meanings and uses of (dis)ability are named and thereby made (in)visible.

    Abstract [en]

This workshop invites participatory design practitioners and researchers to explore how Ostrom's 8 principles for collaborative group working can aid designers during the design process. It is proposed that the principles could help to address questions such as how to scale up and sustain co-design approaches in equitable, inclusive, efficient, and effective ways and to normalise such ways of working in wider systems. The workshop follows previous work conducted in a co-design and quality improvement context [7] where the relationships between the principles were highlighted. This relationship will be experientially explored during the workshop. The outcome of the workshop will be a set of design tools that can be applied by designers within the community that wish to explore equity and inclusion in a participatory way, the aim is to disseminate these tools with the community.

Employer Branding: Att attrahera, rekrytera och behålla rätt personal – En kvalitativ studie inriktad på HR:s arbete inom ingenjörsföretag2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper is a qualitative study about how personnel in Homes for Care and Accommodation work with mental health issues among unaccompanied children. The purpose with this study is to identify how they are working with mental health issues and explore how the personnel would like to work if their resources were unlimited. Interviews have been used as a qualitative method in this study and a social constructionist approach has been applied. The theoretical perspective in this study is salutogenesis and this perspective has been the stepping stone during the analysis of the gathered material. A reflexive analysis of the empirical data has been made and the result is presented in several themes connected to the experience of the personnel. The result and analysis show that it is not the duty of the accommodations to work with mental health issues but still, in practice, this have become their responsibility. The methods used are mainly focusing on building relationships with and structure around the adolescents. Conversations are the most important tool when working with mental health issues. The result also presents that clear information, more help from professionals and more education are items the respondents wishes that they had access to. In the discussion, reasoning is around who has the responsibility for mental health among unaccompanied children and how an increased sense of context could be a proposition for trying to decrease mental health issues among unaccompanied children.

Grannskapets potentiella roll för integration: En studie om ensamkommande barn och deras grannskapsrelationer2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is a part of a wider multiple case study conducted in Jönköping county. It is examining a residential HVB-home for unaccompanied refugee children in Jönköping city. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine the neighborhood’s potential role in integration of unaccompanied refugee children. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with neighbors (n=11) and with representatives for the HVB-home (n=3). Furthermore, the study examines what information strategies have been used in the establishment process of HVB-home, along with what this has meant for the reception of the home in the neighborhood. The study finds that the neighborhood perceives the examined HVB-home as anonymous and there is a noticeable lack of information and knowledge about the home amongst the neighbors. The neighbors requests more information about the HVB-home and generally have indifferent or positive attitudes towards the location and existence of the HVB-home and the unaccompanied refugee children. The degree of acceptance of the home could be explained by the information strategy the HVB-home initially chose for the establishment of the home or the lack of knowledge about the home amongst the neighbors, although further explanations could be given. The lack of contact between the HVB-home and the neighborhood could partially be explained by the HVB-home’s choice to keep a low profile in the neighborhood. In addition, the study can distinguish an unexplored potential for the neighborhood to possible play an important role in the integration of the unaccompanied refugee children.

    Abstract [en]

The dissertation concems youths in detention at residential group homes, their sexuality in general, their sexual health in particular. and their sex education. According to Swedish law, sex education is required in the Swedish public school system. The education must be perceived as relevant by youths and promotion rather than preventive-focused. Despite this legislative measure, Swedish research data on this youth population are scarce; available international research shows that youths in detention have poor sexual heal th. The aim is thus to gain knowledge about the sexual health among youths in detention at residential group homes, and to develop and present a sex education curriculum targeted to their special needs. A survey followed by an interview study seeks to assess knowledge of sexual health among these adolescents (papers I-III). Exposure to untoward sexual behaviors alongside sexual risk taking is found, concomitant to apportunities for these youths to experience healthy sexual encounters that may outweigh the risks. Furthermore, this group of detained adolescents are more risk taking and exposed to negative sexual experiences compared to their non-detained same aged peers. In focus group interviews, the sex education curriculum is presented to the detainees (paper IV). They consider the information relevant and share advice of how to furtherad just the material to thei r needs. The data are discussed from the perspective of social psychology, and the rationale behind the youths' risk taking is explored. The study pennits the voices of the youths be heard; it presents a nuanced portrait of the camplexity behind their sexual risk taking and elucidates the pereceived advantages of unsafe sex. The results are of i nterest to researchers and clinicians in areas of sociaJ work where specialized knowledge of socially disadvantaged youth and sexual health has been lacking.

Marginaliserad sexualitet?: Tvångsomhändertagna ungdomars attityder, erfarenheter och handlingar2012In: Socionomens forskningssupplement, ISSN 0283-1929, no 31, p. 44-52Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate a number of educationalists attitude towards children’s influence in the process of documentation, and to examine if respect towards children’s integrity is taking into consideration in the process of documentation. On the basis of this aim, we have the following questions of issue: What kind of influence do the children have in the process of documentation? and What is the educationalists attitude towards children’s integrity in the documentation?

The thesis uses a qualitative approach to examine educationalists attitude towards the topic mentioned above. We have interviewed nine educationalists, working in both preschool and primary school, because this puts the study in a wider perspective. The nine educationalists, which we chose to interview, were a choice of convenience.

The results showed that children have a certain amount of influence in the documentation, but it is not a meaningful influence because the educationalists are not making the children aware of the reason with and the circumstances around the documentation. Often, the children do not have influence over the whole chain of documentation, but just over a certain part of it. For example, the children are not aware of the aim of the documentation, what is supposed to happen with the material and the voluntariness of the documentation. When it comes to integrity we have seen three different approaches among the educationalists, namely integrity as a border or a sphere, as respect or consideration and as a way of getting received. A fourth approach means that the educationalists are not taking the children’s integrity into consideration in the process of documentation.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study focused on the effectiveness of Swedish development aid in Zimbabwe, based on the organizations' views and how the aid organizations work with development in thecountry. A total of four semi-structured interviews were conducted with qualified developmentworkers representing Swedish development organizations and partner organizations in Zimbabwe from, Diakonia, Zimbabwe Women's Resource Centre & Network, Afrikagrupperna andUnionen. The results have shown that there is a positive impact of development aid despite thechallenges in the country. We have presented in this essay the positive and identifiable changesthat aid agencies have accomplished in various cities in Zimbabwe. The conclusion of this studyis, for the opportunities created by aid agencies to be sustainable, the government should welcome the civil society actors and the private sector that have the resources to complement thosethat the government does not have. As well as create a good policy environment in which government and civil society can cooperate.

Internationalising the academic classroom – what, why and how2022Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The covid-19 pandemic served as an accelerator to prioritise local internationalisation activities at many higher education institutions (HEIs). Internationalisation of formal curriculum at home is one of such activities that has the power to bring the benefits of internationalisation to all students, not only the mobile ones. To make this happen, university teachers need the expertise to become capable of designing and facilitating international practices in their disciplines.

The view of teaching staff as key players in internationalisation at home/internationalisation of the curriculum (IaH/IoC) is well established. However, even though teachers, in theory, may be aware of their role, research shows that there is great uncertainty about how to carry out their responsibility in practice. HEIs stand in front of the important task: equipping their teaching staff with the competencies to manage the challenges and opportunities that the international classroom brings.

This presentation will give an example of meeting this demand by introducing an ongoing initiative in creating a staff development course driven by the network for Strategic Internationalisation for Swedish University Colleges (HÖNSI).

A group of researchers, teachers, curriculum developers and international officers representing six Swedish HEIs have planned the joint course with the aim to increase the awareness of academic teachers about their role as intercultural educators and to support them in how to integrate an international, intercultural and global perspective in their own practice to increase their students’ intercultural competence. Our session will present the course plan, its learning objectives and contents. In addition, the dialogic planning process and its challenges will be discussed, for example, the balance between theory and practice and the didactic/educational issues: what is internationalisation, why internationalisation and how to ‘do’ internationalisation?

Gender roles in households: A case study on gender roles in households in northern Tanzania2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This case study investigates perspectives and changes in gender roles in household activities from a gender (in)equality context in Tarime, northern Tanzania. The participants in this study part-took in a previous project called the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem Project (SEMA) which aimed to integrate gender perspectives and sustainable livelihoods in rural parts of Tarime. Women in these areas often bear the primary responsibilities of caring for the household. The area is also controlled by male authority, and women are daily exposed to oppression and physical violence. Statistically, girls in the study area often miss the chance to higher education since boys are prioritized. Instead, girls risk the chances of early marriage and are exposed to female genital multination. So far, there has been little research on gender roles in household activities in these areas. Therefore, this case study strived to provide such material for future project operations. The main goal of this study was to investigate gender equality in households, focusing on how women and men describe norms linked to equality and gender roles in households, if norms and roles have changed after the project and if so, which circumstances have led to such a change. Both men and women were interviewed through semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews and informal interviews. The empirical data was later analyzed through the lens of the social role theory. Research findings showed that women are still living subordinate to men and unequal distribution of household duties still exists. However, education on equal rights and women empowerment from the SEMA project has changed people's perspectives on the matter, inspiring both women and men to fight for a sustainable change. The study explores root causes that hinder the implementation of equal rights. This study can contribute to more understanding of cultural traditions and finding new ways to sustain the implantation of equal rights.

    Abstract [sv]

Organising (Refugee) Integration in Sweden: How It Begins2023In: Organising Immigrants’ Integration: Practices and Consequences in Labour Markets and Societies / [ed] A. Diedrich & B. Czarniawska, Springer, 2023, p. 31-47Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, I argue that the focus on specific phases in migration and the lives of refugees might limit the understanding of refugees’ struggles in their efforts to integrate. Refugee integration, as a process, is highly individual and thus the beginning of integration might be different for each refugee. To put it simply, refugee integration has multiple beginnings. Hence, to have a more comprehensive view, one needs to look at refugee integration as a flow of chained events that occur at various places and times. Doing so would not only provide a more comprehensive understanding of the organising practices refugees go through, but it would also illuminate certain power struggles and vulnerabilities that refugees face when trying to settle in a new country. Most importantly, providing a different understanding of the beginning of refugee integration could have implications for practice and policy, and contribute to a construction of more humane and sustainable refugee integration practices.

Sustainable Fashion: A Generation Z Perspective2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Increased awareness of the climate crisis leads to sustainability becoming moreimportant to many people as the actions made today will have a large impact on futuregenerations. Generation Z is soon to be the largest consumer group globally, where most peopleare interested in implementing sustainable lifestyles. Gen Z will soon hold a powerful positionas fashion consumers and has the ability to drive positive changes for societies globally.

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to study consumer attitudes and behaviour towardspurchasing sustainable fashion products on the Swedish market. The group aimed to be studiedincludes people over the age of 18 in Sweden that belong to generational cohort Z.

Method: The method used for this research is exploratory, taking on an inductive approachand collecting qualitative data through 10 semi-structured interviews with people between theages of 18-27 in Sweden. The findings from the data emerged from thematic analysis.

Conclusion: The results show that there is a genuine concern for the climate and the future ofthe planet among the cohort, which also has an impact on the attitude. Despite the positiveattitude towards purchasing sustainable fashion products, there is an existing gap between thepositive attitude and consumer behaviour. The accumulated value from factors such as price, style, and availability is often higher than the sole value of an item’s sustainability factor.

    Abstract [en]

Physical activity is described in the literature as positive and important, and has come into focus in recent years. An activity-based theoretical approach dominates in Swedish eldercare, and there are also international recommendations on physical activity for older people. Nevertheless, few studies have explored how the need for physical activity is satisfied at assisted living facilities.

The aim of this study was to investigate how professionals working in eldercare think about and act to promote physical activities for elderly people. The empirical data consists of observations and interviews conducted at four assisted living facilities in two different Swedish municipalities.

The results show how cultures and norms are important for how professionals think and act regarding physical activity. There is a contradiction between how professionals discuss elderly people’s need for support for physical activity and how they act in their day-to-day work. There seems to be an acceptance that elderly people’s individual needs cannot be met if professionals have other tasks to perform.

Approaches to physical activity at assisted living facilities: from the perspective of older people and physiotherapists2019In: European Journal of Physiotherapy, ISSN 2167-9169, E-ISSN 2167-9177, Vol. 21, no 1, p. 27-34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: Physical activity has been described as important for the well-being of all individuals, including the very old. The aim of this study was to investigate how physical activity is performed at assisted living facilities, the situations in which older people were and wanted to be physically active and the role of the physiotherapist at each facility.

Methods: To achieve this aim, an ethnographic study including observations and interviews was conducted at four assisted living facilities.

Results: The results show that physical activity neither was an issue in focus at any of the assisted living facilities, nor were recommendations on physical activity followed. Individuals that were able to exercise themselves could do so, whereas those in need of assistance had but limited possibilities to be physically active. There was a need for physical activity that the staff do not necessarily and sufficiently identify.

Conclusion: The study illustrated that there were major variations in how older people engaged in physical activity and how physical activities were part of everyday life. Physiotherapists played no clear role at the facilities, especially with regard to preventive exercise. Older individuals were not involved in determining which activities should be made available to the residents.

Managing Exploration and Exploitation in a Media Organisation: A Capability-based approach to Ambidexterity2017In: Journal of Media Business Studies, ISSN 1652-2354, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 146-165Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study contributes to emerging research on management of organisational tensions in the media industry. We approach the topic by utilising the concept of ambidexterity, which has hardly been applied to media organisations. The goal of this study is to provide a capability-based approach to organisational ambidexterity. Thus, we offer a new approach for analysing media management by operationalising ambidexterity with operational and dynamic capabilities.

The study analyses what kinds of tensions ambidexterity creates between managerial operational and dynamic capabilities. The empirical analysis is based on interviews with top-level managers at the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yle, during 2013/14. The approach is qualitative. The results are presented by using our theoretical approach of combining exploration and exploitation (ambidexterity) with sensing and seizing (dynamic and operational capabilities).

Inkludering – en internationell utblick med några nedslag2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Working successfully towards inclusion—or excluding pupils?: A comparative retroductive study of three similar schools in their work with EBD2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background. Sweden uses municipally run Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) for students displaying emotional behavioural difficulties (EBD). This study investigates one Swedish municipality where transfers of students to PRUs were related to school practices favouring either inclusion or exclusion.

Method. A purposeful sampling procedure was used to select three elementary schools with regard to their success (School A) or failure (B and C) in keeping pupils with problematic behaviours at school. These three schools are in catchment areas with similar socio-economic conditions. A mixed methods research design was combined with comparative case studies in a retroductive approach.

Results. School A had only one pupil transferred to a PRU in ten years, whereas such transfers from B and C were almost tenfold. School A distinguished itself from the other two schools by its number of inclusive qualities. This school succeeded in keeping almost all students without depriving other students of their rightful learning.

Conclusions. All data showed that the reasons for the differences in exclusion rates were to be found inside the schools and not inside the pupils. Accordingly, the results from this study indicate that the number of children viewed as having behaviour problems is closely related to the quality of their schools regarding work with special needs education. In an era when behavioural difficulties are most often seen as behavioural difficulties within children, the results from this study call for a redirection of focus, from individuals’ behaviours to educational factors.

Conducting the pilot study: A neglected part of the research process? Methodological findings supporting the importance of piloting in qualitative research studies2019In: International Journal of Qualitative Methods, E-ISSN 1609-4069, Vol. 18, article id 1609406919878341Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the development of research to compare the processes and impact of inclusive education in Sweden with results obtained from a study undertaken in Ireland, a pilot study was conducted and documented. The pilot study had three aims: (1) to gather data to provide guidance for a substantive study adapted to Swedish conditions through modification of Irish research procedures and instruments, (2) to critically interrogate how we as researchers could most effectively conduct a pilot study utilizing observational and video-recorded data, and (3) to use the Irish theoretical model as a tool of analysis for studying inclusion in two Swedish schools. Although pilot studies are frequently conducted to assess the efficacy of research instruments for use in qualitative research projects, few publications have drawn upon empirical findings related to such studies. Additionally, while methodological texts recommend the use of pilot studies in qualitative research, there is a lack of reported research focusing on how to conduct such pilot studies. We argue that our methodological findings may contribute to greater awareness of the important role that a pilot study may have for full-scale qualitative research projects, for example, in case study research where semi-structured qualitative interviews are used. This argument is based on the assumption that researchers, and especially novice researchers, having conducted a pilot study will be better informed and prepared to face the challenges that are likely to arise in the substantive study and more confident in the instruments to be used for data collection. A proper analysis of the procedures and results from the pilot study facilitates the identification of weaknesses that may be addressed. A carefully organized and managed pilot study has the potential to increase the quality of the research as results from such studies can inform subsequent parts of the research process.
