Aligning Enterprise Strategy with IT projects: Uncovering the most common factors causing misalignment in IT project2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Stratgic alignment has been one of the top concerns for IT executives for decades. One of the great debates in literature regarding strategic alignment is what act ‘alignment’ means, why it is needed and how do enterprises stay aligned. Alignment has many definitions, but in this context, it is concerned with the integration of business and IT strategies. Research has proven that there are positive relations to enterprise performance when it is aligned.

This qualitative research investigates the causes of misalignment through the views and thoughts of IT professionals at a Scandinavian IT consultancy company. By using a model created by, Schlosser, Wagner, and Coltman, this thesis could establish the most common factors to achieve alignment in the given enterprise. The model allowed the field of business-IT alignment to be explored in IT projects, and allowed for a better understanding of what causes misalignment.

This thesis conducted six interviews to answers two research questions; (1) what factors cause misalignment in IT projects and (2) how do these factors differ in different methodologies. The results from the analysis found that the main factors of misalignment were ‘procedures / workflow alignment’, ‘managerial skills of business and IT employees’, ‘technical skills and knowledge of IT employees’, ‘mutual trust and respect between business and IT executives / employees’, ‘IT skills and knowledge of business executives/employees’ and ‘alignment of business and IT strategy/goals/plans’. The second research question could  concluded that more research is needed to understand how factors change using different methodologies, as the results were to similar to reach a definit conclusion. For future research the thesis recommends using a multiple case study using the same model to verify the data gathered in this thesis and to strengthen the use of the model.

Get Taiwanized!: Swedish Firms' Change of Entry Mode2005Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

Expanding to foreign markets is increasingly popular for companies. The company has to decide which organisational structure, entry mode, to use in the new market. Factors affecting the change from one entry mode to another have obtained little attention. This thesis concerns Swedish companies’ changes of entry mode in Taiwan.

The purpose is to investigate which factors that serve as triggers respectively barriers for the change of entry modes, to be able to examine which theories that can be used to explain and support mode changes.

Different theories concerning choice and change of entry mode have been investigated. Based on the theories, a model including factors influencing entry mode changes was established. The model has contributed a foundation for the empirical findings as well as the analysis of the companies. As a method, a qualitative approach was conducted through interviews with five Swedish companies having a subsidiary in Taiwan. The criterion for the companies was that they should have a subsidiary in Taiwan, but entered the market with another entry mode. Considering the small number of companies and to obtain an understanding about the entry mode changes, a qualitative investigation was the most suitable.

Conclusions that could be drawn were that the competitive Taiwanese market had triggered some of the companies to change their entry mode to a subsidiary in order to be present in the market. Increased sales volume did also have evident affect on why the companies changed their entry mode. The investigation also gives indications that barriers tend to be of internal and firm specific character. Concerning the theories explaining entry mode changes, no complete theory could explain the changes, but parts from different theoretical fields could be applied.

Green IT Initiatives in organizations for achieving Environmental Sustainability; integration of Change Management and Organization Culture2011Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The issue of environmental sustainability is rising nowadays, which made the organisations to survive the planet. Accordingly, the governments are giving support to organisations for taking steps to achieve the environmental sustainability. To achieve the environmental sustainability, it is needed to bring change in organisations. Besides, Information Technology plays a significant role to develop novel processes and technologies to control the environmental loads for achieving environmental sustainability. This study is based on three mainstay concepts: Change Management, Green IT, and Organisational Culture. This research is intended to identify Green IT initiatives to achieve the environmental sustainability through change management and organisational culture in the organisations. A change management model is ultimately presented in the analysis, which describes the process of change management within an organisation based on the three main concepts mentioned above.

This study is an investigation based on literature reviews and two case studies (Tetra Pak (Pakistan) and Panasonic (Sweden)). Case Studies have been carried out to verify the commodity of change process model (theoretical framework) and change management model. The research is also aimed to find, if the investigated organisations ultimately capture the targeted result, when willing to bring Green IT in their organisational systems.

Cross-cultural aspects of learning technology acceptance2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Education in a global networked society implies the wide use of educational technology, which in turn requires learners’ technology acceptance. The previous educational research has given little attention to the acceptance and use of learning technology in international or intercultural context. In this symposium, we present three empirical studies of technology acceptance by adult learners. All three are based on an acknowledged acceptance theory (i.e. the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, UTAUT, Venkatesh et al., 2003), and aim at applying it in contexts where different cultures are involved. The first deals with the introduction of a virtual learning environment at a Swedish, a Norwegian, and a Lithuanian university. The second examines the use of a learning management system at a Spanish university, distinguishing technological from non-technological culture as context of the technology use. The third is a large survey of general attitudes and use of computers for learning in Germany and Romania, considering both ethnical and professional culture. In each of them, the findings widely correspond with the previous acceptance theories, i.e. learners’ expectations and the social influence determine their attitudes, which further determine the technology usage. Additionally, the cultural diversity highlights influences such as, e.g., individualism, uncertainty avoidance or computer anxiety, which can change both the values of the acceptance variables, and the relationships between them. Based on these evidences, the three studies provide a deeper insight into the interconnections between culture – in the national/ethnical, as well as in the professional sense – and learning technology acceptance.

IT Governance Practices: A Multiple Case Study of Tanzanian Public Government Organizations2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Previous studies have been made on various aspects of IT governance in public government organizations in developing countries and revealed several major issues. However, due to limited knowledge, it is unclear what IT Governance (ITG) practice is in place in public organizations. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate the adopted IT management practices and their influence on the effectiveness of IT management in the Tanzanian public government organization. A qualitative study was done using the holistic multiple case study strategy. Data was collected using the semi-structured interview method with heads of IT in three Tanzanian public government organizations. The analysis of this study showed that senior managers involvement in IT projects, Office of CIO and the IT leadership are key ITG practices adopted in the three Tanzanian public government organizations. Senior management involvement in IT projects was found to influence knowledge sharing through collaboration between IT and business units. Furthermore, the CIO office was found to influence the organization's decision-making through direct representation to the decision-making body by a person who monitors and issues IT directives. Furthermore, IT management was found to have an influence on simplifying knowledge sharing between IT and business units, as well as monitoring IT issues and issuing IT directives in the organization. Given these findings, our study contributes knowledge into the literature on IT governance with special emphasis on governmental organizations in developing countries.

    Abstract [sv]

Collaborative and partnership research for improvement of health and social services: researcher’s experiences from 20 projects2018Ingår i: Health Research Policy and Systems, ISSN 1478-4505, E-ISSN 1478-4505, Vol. 16, artikel-id 46Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Getting research into policy and practice in healthcare is a recognised, world-wide concern. As an attempt to bridge the gap between research and practice, research funders are requesting more interdisciplinary and collaborative research, while actual experiences of such processes have been less studied. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to gain more knowledge on the interdisciplinary, collaborative and partnership research process by investigating researchers’ experiences of and approaches to the process, based on their participation in an inventive national research programme. The programme aimed to boost collaborative and partnership research and build learning structures, while improving ways to lead, manage and develop practices in Swedish health and social services.

    Methods

Interviews conducted with project leaders and/or lead researchers and documentation from 20 projects were analysed using directed and conventional content analysis.

    Results

Collaborative approaches were achieved by design, e.g. action research, or by involving practitioners from several levels of the healthcare system in various parts of the research process. The use of dual roles as researcher/clinician or practitioner/PhD student or the use of education designed especially for practitioners or ‘student researchers’ were other approaches. The collaborative process constituted the area for the main lessons learned as well as the main problems. Difficulties concerned handling complexity and conflicts between different expectations and demands in the practitioner’s and researcher’s contexts, and dealing with human resource issues and group interactions when forming collaborative and interdisciplinary research teams. The handling of such challenges required time, resources, knowledge, interactive learning and skilled project management.

    Conclusions

Collaborative approaches are important in the study of complex phenomena. Results from this study show that allocated time, arenas for interactions and skills in project management and communication are needed during research collaboration to ensure support and build trust and understanding with involved practitioners at several levels in the healthcare system. For researchers, dealing with this complexity takes time and energy from the scientific process. For practitioners, this puts demands on understanding a research process and how it fits with on-going organisational agendas and activities and allocating time. Some of the identified factors may be overlooked by funders and involved stakeholders when designing, performing and evaluating interdisciplinary, collaborative and partnership research.

An adapted Information System Success Model for Software-as-a-Service Solutions: Management Support, User Involvement, and Trust as Antecedents to Information Systems Success2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The companies of Industry 4.0 need to invest in digitalising their organizations as software is growing into a decisive manufacturing determinant. Especially in the SaaS business and the transformation to Industry 4.0, there are many small companies that are driving the transformation while competing for market share. In this context, the SaaS providers need to develop an understanding of the success of their solution. While the Information Systems Success Model by DeLone and McLean has found some application in the context of SaaS solutions, there is no specific model for the SaaS industry. Furthermore, there is the underlying need to understand which antecedents cause or influence the success of an information system.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop an Information Systems Success Model for Software-as-a-Service companies and to understand the antecedents and their relationships to the success of SaaS solutions from the SaaS provider’s point of view.

Method: This study followed an abductive approach due to the possibility to simultaneously review existing theory and examine the empirical findings in the analysis. Furthermore, an exploratory study was conducted utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative data was gathered through a standardized online survey of the customers of a SaaS provider and then analysed using Structural Equation Modelling. The qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with SaaS providers, SaaS customers, and researchers of related fields and then analysed using a hermeneutic data analysis approach. The results of both methods were then triangulated to create the adapted model.

Conclusion: Three antecedents of information systems success in the SaaS context were identified as part of this study. The antecedents are Management Support, User Involvement, and Trust. These antecedents can be used as levers by the SaaS provider to steer the success of their solution. Furthermore, the antecedents are integrated in a comprehensive Information Systems Success Model to measure and understand the success of SaaS solutions from the SaaS provider’s point of view.

University Teachers’ Perspectives on the Use of Educational Technology in the Research Supervision Process: A case-study on the supervision process of students during their final thesis at the Jönköping University in Sweden2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Educational technology has been proven to potentially impact higher education institutions, but the true extent of this potential often remains vague. In times when higher education and research become increasingly relevant for the economic welfare of society, research supervision itself emerges as an important field of research.

This qualitative research investigates the teachers’ view and approaches to the use of educational technology during the research supervision process of undergraduate and graduate students at the Jönköping University. Through the application of the TPACK framework in higher education, we gained a better understanding of the teachers’ personal values when using educational technologies in their supervision process. Furthermore, we are contributing an empirical example of a TPACK application in higher education while shedding light on the decision-making of supervisors when using or not using educational technology.

We conducted seven interviews with research supervisors and answered the questions of (1) how educational technology is used during research supervision and (2) why educational technology is used or not used during the supervision process. The findings showed five main use cases for educational technology. We observed that supervisors mostly used educational technology when collaborating with their students whereas they preferred a more analog or hybrid approach to technology for executing individual tasks like reading and commenting. Educational technology has a supporting role for supervisors, and it is creating personal value to them through convenience, reading comfort, increased efficiency and effectiveness. For further research we suggest investigating how the personal value for teachers can be accounted for in the existing TPACK framework, and the possible benefits the application of the original or an extended version of the TPACK framework has for the field of information system research.

Forskning om IT i högre utbildning2012Ingår i: NU 2012: Gränslöst lärande, 2012Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Continuous innovation: developing and using a clinical database with new technology for patient-centred care - the case of the Swedish quality register for arthritis2013Ingår i: International Journal for Quality in Health Care, ISSN 1353-4505, E-ISSN 1464-3677, Vol. 25, nr 2, s. 118-124Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objective. We describe and explain the development of a clinical quality database and its use for different clinical, management and patient empowerment purposes.

Design. A longitudinal case study covering 1993–2009.

Setting. Rheumatology departments in Swedish hospitals.

Participants. Those involved in developing the clinical database and its applications and a limited number of users.

Intervention(s). Different methods for inputting and storing clinical and patient data and for analysing and presenting the data to providers and patients.

Main outcome measure(s). Participants’ perceptions of the value of different applications and of influences, which helped and hindered the development of the system.

Results. Different innovations were introduced at different times continually to increase the ultility of the clinical data and the clinic- and patient coverage of the clinical data system. Limited interview data show postive patient and provider perceptions of the latest application to collect and present data as time trend visual display in the clinical consultation.

Conclusions. A longitudinal perspective revealed how a clinical quality register was developed and how new technologies not imagined in the early 1990s continue to increase the ultility and value of the clinical database. This historical perspective provided limited evidence of impact, but does provide lessons for current strategies for innovation for quality in health care and of the need to consider innovolution processes, rather than discrete innovations, given the rapid pace of change in new technologies. More evidence is needed of the impact of such registers, and of enhancements, on providers and patients and on costs.

Is permanent external consulting necessary for post-implementation stage?2007Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

IT executives face nowadays a theme that underlies for all questions in today's business – the change! The main factor that accelerates the “pace of change” is globalization. Globalization conducts to severe competition; it conducts also to shorter product life cycles that are necessary aspects for companies in order to increase competitive advan-tage. A good alternative to be more efficient and gain access to better information is to implement an ERP system that will allow companies to improve efficiency and be more proactive. The main benefits of an ERP system are that it gives more controls over the company's assets, and business processes such as financial supply chain management and profitability assessments of employees, departments and customers. Most of the companies after implementing the system choose to end their relationship with the ERP system supplier and believe that they have the capacity to maintain and develop the sys-tem by themselves. The post-implementation represents the use and operation after the ERP system is put into use.

The definite purpose is to investigate why some companies choose to reject the perma-nent external support concerning the maintenance and further development of the ERP post-implementation stage. The paper will present the diverse reasons to why the re-spondents choose to not use permanent external support.

In order to find accurate information we have interviewed companies within the Jönköping's county that are in the post-implementation stage. Our purpose was to un-derstand the reason to why some companies reject permanent consulting and how they are developing and maintaining the used ERP system. To make this study more accurate we have used theories about ERP systems and the post-implementation stage that will help us to support and give value to our results.

One of the main results of this research were that companies have only personal moti-vation concerning the consulting activity choices and they affirmed that the result of the implemented ERP system would be the same no matter which alternative they choose for maintaining and developing the ERP system. The overall impression concerning consulting activities is quite positive among the interviewed companies.

Challenges and Conflicts in Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Evidence from the Heavy Vehicle Industry2014Ingår i: Supply Chain Forum: an International Journal, ISSN 1625-8312, E-ISSN 1624-6039, Vol. 15, nr 1, s. 22-32Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding and explore the challenges and conflicts in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) through empirical examples from the heavy vehicle industry in Sweden and China. An exploratory study of the case company’s supply chains in two countries is conducted for this paper. The major components of the empirical data are interviews with the company´s representatives and its downstream supply chain members in Sweden and China, as well as workshops with the logistics industry’s representatives in China. The findings show that the firms perceive the challenges on the regulatory and organisational levels. The conflicts can be found between several stakeholder groups, the main focus seems to be on environmental and economic aspects. Life-cycle solution for the vehicles’ utilisation is valuable but there are challenges to employing it, especially in the Chinese context. The results show that intensified international collaboration on environment and traffic safety can help tackle challenges and ease the conflicts in sustainable supply chain management.

The role of the CIO in the context of start-ups operating in the sharing economy2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is an important role within the field of Information

Systems to enforce IT governance, take charge on the implementation of new technologies and

consult the other members of the top management on strategic decisions regarding the company

vision bearing in mind the consequences for IT. The purpose of this study is to understand the

role of the CIO in start-ups of the sharing economy which are mainly based on a platform

strategy. To see which tasks the CIO takes on and what challenges he faces in these emerging

companies semi-structured interviews were conducted, analyzed and compared with existing

literature. The findings show that the expected nine tasks of the CIO exclude technical

oversight. Next to this, challenges arise through competitors, cultural differences and personal

relationships which the CIO tackles by an increase in technical knowledge, team leaderships

and resulting respect. Organizations can use these findings to prepare their manager for their

    upcoming tasks and possible changes.

Hur bra är din e-handelsplats?: En utvärdering ur användarperspektiv2006Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

Business Intelligence and Customer Relationship Management: a Direct Support to Product Development Teams2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

For manufacturing firms, having knowledge about customers is very important, in particular for the developers and designers of new products. A way in which software can help to build an information channel between the customers and the firm is through Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions. Customers’ data are captured into the Customer Relationship Management solution while Business Intelligence analyses them and provide clear processed information to the developers and designers of new products. In this study we have researched if this process occurs in the industry, if and how it can be improved and what advantages it could bring to manufacturing firms. We have carried out the data collection by interviewing experts in four companies, three software companies that provide Business Intelligence solutions and one manufacturing firm. We found out that those software solutions are not used to directly connect developers and designers to customers’ data, and that there are no specific technical obstacles that prevents this, if not managerial reasons rooted in everyday practice. We also uncovered facts that would help to make this process more efficient and make customers’ data even more relevant to development.

Grön IT: IT med miljöhänsyn2008Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

 Arbeta med Grön IT i hela organisationen

     Satsa långsiktigt

     Öppna för nya arbetsmetoder

     Samarbeta med intressenter

     Allokera nödvändiga resurser

     Utbilda alla

     Tillämpa ett TBL-perspektiv

 Integrera Grön IT i de balanserade styrkorten

 Belöna framgångar inom Grön IT

     Marknadsför åtagande och framgångar

     Certifiera och certifieras

Indicating the Green: Defining and measuring Green IT2008Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

In our Bachelor’s thesis we wrote about the advantages, risks, strategies and methods useful when working with Green IT. But there still were difficulties delimiting the field of Green IT. This was mostly because of the lack of previous research, unestablished definitions of the term Green IT as well as nonexistent methods to measure the accomplished work. Furthermore the recent changes in the environment, with escalating pressure from stakeholders with environmental concerns and increased costs of investments and maintenance, have forced IT-companies to measure the effects of IT and its financial impact.

    Purpose

The purpose of our research study is to further clarify the field of Green IT by establishing a definition and constructing a KPI-setting.

    Method

We first established a definition of the term Green IT by gathering available definitions and analysing them. The analysis resulted in two definitions; one for Green IT (a technology product used to support information gathering, processing, distribution and use, and which is or contributes to environmental sustainability) and one for a Green IT Company (manages the process of producing technology used to support information gathering, processing, distribution and use, and which is or contributes to environmental sustainability). These definitions made us realise that there are users and manufacturers of Green IT, with distinctive perspectives and needs when measuring it. According to our definitions we found respondents to interview in order to construct two KPI-settings instead of one.

    Conclusions

The first KPI-setting constructed focuses on producers of Green IT and their production activities along with the financial impact. The second KPI-setting focuses on users of Green IT and looks at the usage of Green IT, and also includes financial indicators to measure financial impact.

How does Knowledge Management improve the Service Industry?2006Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

In twenty-first century, the industry competes heavily. Entrepreneurs try to use technology to develop their business. However, using technology generates high costs. So companies need to find a new way to survive by using the existing resources to gain maximum benefit. Knowledge management is one of interesting alternatives as it can deliver competitive advantage such as greater competencies and synergy, more balanced decisions and less errors, more creativity and innovation, broader collaboration and knowledge sharing, and easier links to expertise and deeper understanding.

This paper deals with various aspects of knowledge management particularly concentrating on knowledge sharing in service industry. Issues in the context of different data sources and the research with qualitative methodology create the in-depth knowledge to understand how to do knowledge work for gaining competitive advantage. The emphasis is placed on analysis and evaluation of problems and barriers of both cases as applied from all data collection.

In the paper, each chapter has the following set-up. Chapter 2 highlights methodology. The qualitative approach has been used to obtain information and provide data analysis. A complete analysis of knowledge management has been developed by using a case study method with secondary data to analyze how service industry uses knowledge management to manage in its sector. Chapter 3 gives theoretical frame of reference. The definitions of knowledge and culture are explained. Problems and barriers of knowledge sharing are also presented. Chapter 4 gives analysis. Conclusion is presented in the final chapter. The findings show that to improve service and customer satisfaction, the industry has to find out and use knowledge management appropriately. Knowledge management helps reducing time to find information and sharing decision making. For the last part, the discussion and recommendation from culture and knowledge affecting knowledge management in the companies has been reported. Because of the time limitation of the study, the paper focuses only on the section of service industry. An area for further study would be using other research methods such as interview to gain more in-depth understanding and survey to increase reliability and validity of this topic.

How companies manage IT security: A comparative study of Pakistan and Sweden2013Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

IT security provides comprehensive picture both internally and externally by act of ensuring that data is not lost when critical issues arise. In spite of the world has now been replaced with an imperative approach. The companies are using widely desktop computers, laptops, ipads, smart phones and workstation. The sum of all this has been influence to the IT based information and communication system in companies.

The purpose is to do research by taking a critical look at how different kind of business and non-business companies manage their IT security in Pakistan and Sweden with specific emphasis on the administrative controls. As the IT security has a list of steps but the authors focused on three major functions: IT security policy, IT security plan and IT security risk analysis.

As soon as the topic was selected the emphasis was laid on collecting and reading material related to the IT security. It became clear that the most relevant and interesting task was not merely to investigate how different companies in Pakistan and Sweden manage their IT security but infact try to understand what kind of steps and measures lies behind to achieve them. The method was adopted qualitative because it fulfil the requirements which authors want to achieve in the form of deeper understanding how different companies manage IT security in two different countries.

This study concluded that Pakistani companies in terms of IT security policy should focus on data ware houses by implementing policies for securing of exploiting the data and in case of Swedish company IT managers should implement policies for securing of personal data. Evaluation techniques are missing from the companies of Pakistan and Sweden in IT security plan. Enhancing the performing of IT risk analysis to countermeasure the threat. Pakistani companies should focus on business model of information asset. In case of Swedish company higher level and more detailed analysis can apply to core areas of the IT system. These proposed points for improvements could also help in more understanding of IT security in Pakistan and Sweden.

User-Technology-Acceptance Among Doctors: A Case Study Examining the Effects of Pre-Implementation Efforts MadeDuring a System-Implementation In Jönköping County Council2009Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on a case-study of an IT-system implementation within Jönköping County Council. This new IT-system will cover, and support, all health-care related activi-ties within the County Council. The thesis is concerned with aspects that happened within the pre-implementation phase, and the thesis is furthermore only concerned with so-called „soft‟ aspects- meaning aspects that are not of a technical nature. Instead, attitudes relating to the use of the system and various qualities of the system have been measured; and sub-sequently fit into the categories of the extended Technology Acceptance Model, or TAM2, proposed by Venkatesh & Davis (2000). We have limited our research to only look at the attitudes of doctors. The doctors are also divided into two distinct user-groups: where one group has received more training than the other, and have been assigned as „super-users‟, meant to support the regular users in their use of the system, and also to help train these other, „regular-users‟. The attitudes of the various users of the system have been measured by using a qualitative method, and more specifically interviews based on the elements of the TAM2 model. The results of the interviews were analysed using a number of models and theories relevant to the subject matter. The analysis of the results, and the subsequent conclusions which are drawn as answers to the research questions will be of use in future IT-system implementations, especially within the coming rounds of implementing the spe-cific IT-system which has been studied, in the rest of the Jönköping County Council. The main conclusions which have been drawn can be summarised as the following:

The overall user-technology-acceptance of the doctors towards this system is neutral, but has a strong tendency towards a negative attitude. This conclusion is drawn through combining the perceived usefulness, and its sub-elements, with the perceived ease of use, of the doc-tors- as described in the analysis section. One of the key causes for this is the low subjec-tive norm (or outside opinion affecting attitudes) which is spread about the system. One of the key proposals to avoid these low levels of user-technology-acceptance is to meet the negative subjective norm attitudes being spread, with positive responses; and to optimise the training of all users- but to specifically improve the attitudes and knowledge of the su-per-users, which has been proven to be critical for a successful implementation. This thesis shows the importance of managing the subjective norms of the participants in the imple-mentation project, negative press in the media should in our opinion be met by positive in-formation about the system and the implementation. We have also found that should the training be performed in a satisfactory way the opinions and attitudes of the users will be positively affected. The training of the super-users has been found to be of special impor-tance as the attitudes of colleagues have been shown to be the most important for users, when building early opinions about a system.

The impact of gamification on intrinsic motivation: An experimental study of administrative tasks2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Gamification could be a solution to make office work more productive by in- creasing the intrinsic motivation of employees. Currently, little research exists on gamification in connection to administrative tasks. In literature the im- portance of designing gamified tasks to the target group is stressed. This study explores in an experiment the impact of gamification on intrinsic motivation while conducting basic administrative tasks, as well as differences between age groups. The qualitative analysis of the experiment (n = 32) reveals indications that gamification triggers positive emotions, a higher engagement and creativi- ty. Using a mixed methods approach, the indications from the qualitative anal- ysis could not be proven quantitatively with a statistical significance. The re- sults further suggest, that people over 35 years tend to perceive gamification more extreme than younger ones, leading to either high intrinsic motivation or alienation.

Öppen programvara: Undersökning inom högskolor och universitet i Sverige2005Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

Groundhogs in the Source Code2015Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Of old, narrative and storytelling were used to weave useful pieces of information into stories that could be handed down orally, generation after generation. These stories were often conceived in the form of quests, rhythmically built on redundancy and interlacement and laid out on a map.

In the past hundred years, storytelling has progressively distanced itself from this model: mechanical reproduction of music, images, movement, and text has transformed the language of communication across these media and channels, turning seamless immersion into self-conscious reflection, physical struggles into psychological tensions, and traveling the world into traveling emotional landscapes.

Organizing space to represent or visualize experiences is a fundamental human trait, so, in what is both a predictable but unexpected turn of events, the Web, mobile, and digital media have brought once again spatial thinking, journeys, and quests center stage. Navigable space can both represent physical spaces and the abstract information spaces of Facebook or Uber, but what kind of space are we talking about? Some 21st century version of MS Bob? Some glorified FPS?

Using such examples as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, published in 1897, camp musical videos from the early 1980s, early 1990s videogames, and Hollywood movies, this talk argues that as digital and physical blend into unstable cross-channel experiences our conceptualizations shift towards direct manipulation and understanding of abstract navigational and place-making grammars, rather than towards literal, skeumorphic representations of the real.

    Abstract [en]

Information architecture has changed dramatically since the mid-1990s and earlier conceptions of the world and the internet being different and separate have given way to a much more complex scenario in the present day. In the post-digital world that we now inhabit the digital and the physical blend easily, and our activities and usage of information takes place through multiple contexts and via multiple devices and unstable, emergent choreographies.

Information architecture now is steadily growing into a channel- or medium-aspecific multi-disciplinary framework, with contributions coming from architecture, urban planning, design and systems thinking, cognitive science, new media, anthropology. All these have been heavily reshaping the practice: conversations about labelling, websites, and hierarchies are replaced by conversations about sense-making, place-making, design, architecture, cross media, complexity, embodied cognition, and their application to the architecture of information spaces as places we live in in an increasingly large part of our lives.

Via narratives, frameworks, references, approaches and case-studies this book explores these changes and offers a way to reconceptualize the shifting role and nature of information architecture where information permeates digital and physical space, users are producers, and products are increasingly becoming complex cross-channel or multi-channel services.

    Abstract [en]

When information bleeds everywhere and our digital and physical spaces become one and the same, how do we behave as designers and architects.

When we think of the future, our imagination conjures images of magic-like interactions while holographic displays glow in shades of blue or green. These will be there in some form, but they will be tactics, not strategy. As much as city planning and architecture are strategic design for physical spaces, in the blended spaces of mature cross-channel experiences wheredigital and physical become one and the same, strategy will have you play ball with information architecture. Information bleeds everywhere and its architectures shape, for good or for bad, our conversations, our ethics, and politics. Crowd control moves from the streets to Twitter. Mobbing gets mobile. Facebook campaigns displace votes and funds as we stroll along its invisible boulevards and squares.

We have responsibilities, but what exactly? Adopting a spatial perspective over the information architecture of blended spaces and using examples spanning from the bewildering narratives of Calvino’s Invisible Cities to the deceptive linearity of the Prince of Persia games,  from the Panopticon to reality tv and the Darknet, this talk discusses challenges, opportunities, and what is at stake when information architectures scale up to the house and the city to organize a space of endless possibilities, and control.

A mobile internet service for self-management of physical activity in people with reumathoid arthritis: Challenges in advancing the co-design process during the requirements specification phase2015Ingår i: JMIR Research Protocols, ISSN 1929-0748, E-ISSN 1929-0748, Vol. 4, nr 3, artikel-id e111Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: User involvement in the development of health care services is important for the viability, usability, and effectiveness of services. This study reports on the second step of the co-design process.

Objective: The aim was to explore the significant challenges in advancing the co-design process during the requirements specification phase of a mobile Internet service for the self-management of physical activity (PA) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: A participatory action research design was used to involve lead users and stakeholders as co-designers. Lead users (n=5), a clinical physiotherapist (n=1), researchers (n=2) with knowledge in PA in RA and behavioral learning theories, an eHealth strategist (n=1), and an officer from the patient organization (n=1) collaborated in 4 workshops. Data-collection methods included video recordings and naturalistic observations.

Results: The inductive qualitative video-based analysis resulted in 1 overarching theme, merging perspectives, and 2 subthemes reflecting different aspects of merging: (1) finding a common starting point and (2) deciding on design solutions. Seven categories illustrated the specific challenges: reaching shared understanding of goals, clarifying and handling the complexity of participants’ roles, clarifying terminology related to system development, establishing the rationale for features, negotiating features, transforming ideas into concrete features, and participants’ alignment with the agreed goal and task.

Conclusions: Co-designing the system requirements of a mobile Internet service including multiple stakeholders was a complex and extensive collaborative decision-making process. Considering, valuing, counterbalancing, and integrating different perspectives into agreements and solutions (ie, the merging of participants’ perspectives) were crucial for moving the process forward and were considered the core challenges of co-design. Further research is needed to replicate the results and to increase knowledge on key factors for a successful co-design of health care services.

Development of a web-based and mobile app to support physical activity in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis: Results from the second step of a co-design process2015Ingår i: Journal of Medical Internet Research, ISSN 1438-8871, E-ISSN 1438-8871, Vol. 4, nr 1, s. 1-14Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Long-term adherence to physical activity recommendations remains challenging for most individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) despite evidence for its health benefits.

Objective: The aim of this study was to provide basic data on system requirement specifications for a Web-based and mobile app to self-manage physical activity. More specifically, we explored the target user group, features of the future app, and correlations between the system requirements and the established behavior change techniques (BCTs).

Methods: We used a participatory action research design. Qualitative data were collected using multiple methods in four workshops. Participants were 5 individuals with RA, a clinical physiotherapist, an officer from the Swedish Rheumatism Association, a Web designer, and 2 physiotherapy researchers. A taxonomy was used to determine the degree of correlation between the system requirements and established BCTs.

Results: Participants agreed that the future Web-based and mobile app should be based on two major components important for maintaining physical activity: (1) a calendar feature for goal setting, planning, and recording of physical activity performance and progress, and (2) a small community feature for positive feedback and support from peers. All system requirements correlated with established BCTs, which were coded as 24 different BCTs.

Conclusions: To our knowledge, this study is the first to involve individuals with RA as co-designers, in collaboration with clinicians, researchers, and Web designers, to produce basic data to generate system requirement specifications for an eHealth service. The system requirements correlated to the BCTs, making specifications of content and future evaluation of effectiveness possible.

Knowledge Transfer within ERP Implementations: A Phenomenological Investigation2007Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

    Background

The importance of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is that they redesign organizational processes and structure. The new knowledge embedded in the ERP systems induces substantial changes in the businesses which adopt ERP systems. Furthermore, ERP implementations are socially complex and knowledge-intensive activities as several companies may be involved in a single ERP project and intensive knowledge transfer among these companies is vital for the success of the implementation projects.

    Purpose

To date limited amount of research has been performed in the area of knowledge transfer in ERP implementations. My study answered the following questions:

    1. What is the effect of the transfer of knowledge that is associated with ERP implementations?

    2. What (if any) knowledge transfer barriers have been identified during the ERP implementation process?

    3. What types of activities did the firms initiate to enable the knowledge transfer during the ERP implementation process?

    Method

My research consisted of theoretical and empirical parts. Theoretical part entailed a thorough review of current literature on the ERP systems and knowledge management. Adopting a phenomenological approach I next collected the primary data through interviews and surveys with experts in the ERP implementation projects.

    Results

I have described the area of knowledge transfer within ERP implementation projects and identified connections between ERP implementations and organizational learning. I have also uncovered and analyzed the origins of a number of factors that potentially inhibit or enable the knowledge transfer within implementation projects. I was able to connect the theoretical part of the thesis with empirical data and gained a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena at hand. Major barriers to the knowledge transfer stem from the tacit nature of the knowledge itself and the lack of social relationships within the various stakeholders. Activities organizations engage in are ‘knowledge conversion’ and relationships facilitation within the project team.

Tailoring of ERP systems: Influencing factors on the choice of adjustments2006Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 5 poäng / 7,5 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

WEB-BASED PRODUCT CONFIGURATION FOR MASS CUSTOMIZATION: Towards developing mass customization strategy2011Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The increasing demand towards products and services that perfectly matches the customer needs is evident, so the manufacturing trends are aiming to produce small unit of customized product in large total volumes. The advances in manufacturing and information technologies provided great opportunities to achieve cost-effective mass customization. The purpose of this study was to have a holistic view on under-standing how entrepreneurs in small companies employ and effectively manage mass customization realization. The focus was placed in identifying what are the major factors that influence successful mass customization, how available technologies are enabling this process and how companies achieve value co-creation with the customers.

In order to study the practical implementation of mass customization four case studies have been conducted. The information gathered was categorized and the preliminary theoretical framework was used as a template to compare the empirical results.

The results show that every strategy for mass customization has to be customizes according to the particular product/service, market, customers, and the available technology for cost efficient implementation of mass customization. In a mass customization system value co-creation is achieved by direct customer integration and is benefiting from economies of integration. The challenge is to balance the system to the right degree, so socially and technologically efficient environment can bring higher value for the customers and better business opportunities for the companies.

Interactive Agents;: A value adding service?2008Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

“Just as the consumer is becoming more intelligent, the company in parallel should become more intelligent about the customer” (Raisch, 2000, p.4).

Internet has become a huge marketplace and to stay competitive in this growing marketplace, companies must improve the way they interact with their customers (Rayport & Jaworski, 2005). As the amount of information online is rapidly growing, customers are becoming more intelligent. Intelligence that in turn makes them more powerful as they with high knowledge becomes high involvement purchasers, which is the opposite to what companies desire. Moreover customers are no longer satisfied with rewards like “bonus-points” or “take three pay for two” campaigns (Kalkota & Robinson 1999). Today’s customers want to be treated individual, they want to feel special, want to feel that the company really take care for them (Newell 2000).

The aim with this thesis is to explain how Interactive Agents (IA) as a concept can help companies to attract and retain customers. To do so, we first need to describe what that concept consists of.

IA:s can be described as “robots” chatting with the user/customer. They often take graphical form and works with a large knowledgebase that help them deliver the answer a user asks for. The agent is designed to serve customers 24/7 and can, to the opposite of a human, handle more than one case at time. The significant difference between a search-engine and an IA is the technology that allows users to use natural sentences to communicate with the agent instead of only using keywords.

Our findings, that take ground in a literature study followed by an interview with one of the big developers of AI in Sweden, indicates that IA:s could provide companies with an additional value over money savings, which is the main reason according to developers to invest in IA:s. As we can see, two different types of benefits, technical and commercial, can be generated by implementing an IA in an organization. Technical benefits are generated directly from the technology, i.e. make the access to information less complicated and increased knowledge about customers. Commercial benefits are generated as a result of applying this technology and if experienced to a satisfactory level by its target-group, it can generate some commercial benefits, such as goodwill and brand mediation.

We would like to conclude our findings to say that IA will be able to generate some value for the system-user and the end-user. However, we believe that to create a value of significance, there are still requirements (see conclusions) that need to be carried out, where the most important part would be interaction with other systems.

    Third-Party Development for Multi-Contextual Services: On the Mechanisms of Control2011Ingår i: ECIS 2011 Proceedings, AISnet, 2011, s. 1-14Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The increasing adoption of nomadic devices and the associated use of information in numerous use situations pose new challenges for the ISD practice; handling the development of such multi- contextual services covering a broader vignette of users, devices and use situations than typically associated with ISD. Recently organizations have started tapping into development resources in large networks of third-party developers. Such development is enabled through the use of software platforms where developers through boundary resources, such as APIs, may access and extend functionality in new ways. Yet, studies on how organizations are able to control this type of development remains scarce. By synthesizing theory on control and boundary objects we aim at putting a new perspective and gain a greater understanding of how organizations attempt to control such development efforts. As an illustration, we draw upon a case study of a public transportation company which through deployment of a software platform is provided access to a large body of third-party developers. We use this case to study the measures taken to control development.
