LAYOUT DESIGN OF A NEW INCOMING INVENTORY WAREHOUSE: A Case Study on a Swedish Sheet Metal Manufacturer2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the most recent years, the importance of managing inventory in the form of raw materials to the industries has expanded, marking a need to design a new warehouse for inventory management (Ackerman, 1997). Today, it is a requirement for industries to enhance each of their activities with a very effective manner. The optimization of managing raw materials inventory is concerned to smooth material flow with the internal activities of the industries. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to design a layout for new incoming inventory warehouse, which smoothens raw material distribution along the manufacturing shop floor and improves flow in production.

For this purpose, a case-study was carried out in one of the sheet metal manufacturing companies at Jönköping, Sweden. During the investigation in the company, data collection techniques utilized for gathering the required information are interviews and observation. Later, the gathered information is analyzed by relating them with the subject of the theoretical background, which mainly include warehouse management, warehouse processes, storage method, ABC Analysis and Lean production.

By reviewing the information from literature search and case study, initially the drawbacks of current situation in the company are determined. Later, the layout design for a new incoming inventory warehouse is suggested based on the appropriate features, to smoothen the material flow in the shop floor and finally concluded with suggestions for future research.

Whose reality counts?: Critical junctures in livelihood trajectories under deforestation2017In: Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie, ISSN 0040-747X, E-ISSN 1467-9663, Vol. 108, no 5, p. 540-553Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Livelihoods approaches focus on the poor and their knowledge and agency, but risk underplaying broader contextual forces which constrain and shape that agency. Livelihood trajectories approaches attend more fully to these structural, contextual dynamics. A three-year study using quantitative and qualitative methods investigated livelihood trajectories over two decades in a village affected by deforestation in Northeast Cambodia, and sought to identify critical junctures structuring those trajectories. A timber rush, a land rush, a turn to agriculture and ongoing competition to shape post-forest reterritorialisation were identified as the critical junctures. These transformed the physical environment, and initiated waves of migration which in turn transformed the social and economic structure and everyday life of the village. This valuably disrupts narrative simplifications associated with community forestry. The junctures furthermore suggest an analytical framework for understanding deforestation-livelihoods dynamics in other contexts, thus demonstrating how livelihood trajectories research might contribute to middle-level theory building.

Does it matter to have an ethical brand?: A qualitative study of millennials perspective on unethical marketing activities within the soft drink industry2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Brand loyalty has been studied by a large number of scholars over the past few decades, including its impact on consumer purchase behavior and as a core concept when creating brand value. Having ethical business practice helps retain customers trust and enforce their loyalty to the brand. However, brand’s unethical behavior has always been a topic discussed by society, especially for the soft drinks industry.

    Problem

Previous research has shown that there is a link between brand loyalty, brand trust and brand attachment. It has also been implied that consumers with high commitment to a brand might justify a brands unethical behavior. However, there is a lack of research within the field of brand loyalty and ethical business practices within the beverage industry.

    Purpose

The purpose of this study is to understand how millennials with different levels of brand loyalty respond to unethical marketing activities to soft drink brands within the beverage industry. Furthermore, this research would like to give an insight to whether consumers care about ethical brands within this industry or not. Additionally, this study can help brands in the beverage industry to build their marketing strategies and maintain their consumer relationship.

    Method

This study used a qualitative research method, where 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sampling method, with millennials as research objects. Additionally, the brand Pepsi has been used as a case to measure the participants brand loyalty in order to classify them to one of the three levels of loyalty in the conceptual framework.

    Conclusion

The results show that the more loyal consumers are towards brands, the less impact the brand’s unethical behavior has on them. For consumers with low loyalty, the chances of turning to alternatives when brands have ethical issues are greater. Whereas consumers who are on the Satisfied level have a neutral opinion towards the brand when it comes to unethical issues. While, consumers with high brand loyalty may ignore the brand's unethical behavior because of their loyalty and love for the brand. Brand image, product quality, product safety, environmental footprint and how brands handle the unethical issues have been identified as important factors when consumers make the purchasing decision.

    Two-component heat diffusion observed in LaMnO3 and La0.7Ca0.3MnO32010In: Physical Review B Condensed Matter, ISSN 0163-1829, E-ISSN 1095-3795, Vol. 81, no 6, p. 064434-Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the low-temperature electron, lattice, and spin dynamics of LaMnO3 (LMO) and La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) by resonant pump-probe reflectance spectroscopy. Probing the high-spin d-d transition as a function of time delay and probe energy, we compare the responses of the Mott insulator and the double-exchange metal to the photoexcitation. Attempts have previously been made to describe the subpicosecond dynamics of colossal magnetoresistance manganites in terms of a phenomenological three-temperature model describing the energy transfer between the electron, lattice, and spin subsystems followed by a comparatively slow exponential decay back to the ground state. However, conflicting results have been reported. Here we first show clear evidence of an additional component in the long-term relaxation due to film-to-substrate heat diffusion and then develop a modified three-temperature model that gives a consistent account for this feature. We confirm our interpretation by using it to deduce the band gap in LMO. In addition, we also model the nonthermal subpicosecond dynamics, giving a full account of all observed transient features both in the insulating LMO and the metallic LCMO.

Development of a lint handling system for a professional tumble dryer2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to develop a lint handling system for a professional tumble dryer. It has been conducted in collaboration with Electrolux Laundry Systems Sweden AB in Ljungby, Sweden.

The manual cleaning of the lint in tumble dryers is an uncomfortable task for the user, and the accumulation of lint in the system can cause malfunctions. The solution for this problem is the use of a lint handling system to take care of the lint with the minimum user interaction.

The objective is to ideate, develop and test different lint handling systems to evaluate their performance and design a solution to implement in a professional tumble dryer.

The report starts with a theoretical background about industrial design methodology and dryers.

The project is divided into different phases. In the research, several analyses are made to establish the basis for the project: Internet research, user analysis, brand analysis and functional analysis.

After and ideation phase, where through different selection methods two handling systems are chosen to be tested, there is a prototype phase developing the CAD models of both systems.

These prototypes are tested and based on the results three concepts are created to implement a lint handling system in a tumble dryer. One of the three concepts is selected and developed to redesign the external appearance of the dryer based on Electrolux design language and to create the final CAD model. A 1:5 scale physical model is presented.

The final tumble dryer offers a modern look keeping the simplicity of the brand. The dryer is available in three different configurations, each one with a small variation of the lint handling system adapted for different users.

Redesign of the interior of the JU solar car2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis analyzes the interior of the solar car, used by the JU Solar Team, to improve the user experience in terms of user interaction and ergonomics.

Following the Design Thinking methodology, it starts with a research phase to understand how the user interacts with the car and the elements required for this interaction during the race. It also studies the dimension of the actual interior and the anthropometric factors, some changes are proposed for a more efficient use of the space.

The next phase explores new buttons and configurations for the steering wheel. The use of prototypes and sketches leads the development of the ideas, which are further developed and defined, including the graphical design and the dimensions of the interior. In the findings, the redesign of the steering wheel and interior is shown in several renders with an explanation of the final design decisions, which can be summarized in:

A new shape for the steering wheel where most of the buttons have been added with new shapes and colors. The emergency buttons and light indicators have been allocated on a central control panel. The user has access to the buttons without releasing the steering wheel and the dimension of the canapé has been reduced thanks to a more efficient use of the space.

As a part of the thesis a full scale model of the steering wheels and a 1:10 scale model of the interior is provided.

This thesis solves some of the problems in the actual design of the solar car and explore some of the important factors in user interaction. A human-centered design approach to a project usually driven by the performance of the car and not the user experience.

Open Source Strategy: A Change of Perception through the Lens of Innovation: The Case of Open Source Software (OSS) in Sweden2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Open Source Software has been all about myths until recently, with many people believing that open source isn't reliable because the open source projects are held by a small group of amateurs in their friend's garage. Such myths have been refuted with the emerging success and increased popularity of open source, but still many considered open source and proprietary software to be enemies, which can never co-exist in the corporate platform. As a result, some firms have decided to stick to their tradition of commercial software development, while new firms, which base their corporate strategy solely on open source, have emerged. The former group of firms has suffered from losing time and money in fixing the errors and bugs in the software, whereas the latter group has found difficulties in finding financial support and market share in competition among the former group.

Neither group has found absolute success in their business, as result a compromise model has emerged in the software industry, which resulted in a third group of firms that work neither with pure open source model nor with pure proprietary models, but instead with “hybrid” business models which allows integration of these so-called two enemies. Such firms have overcome the pitfalls of both approaches, while combining the benefits of them. The growing success of open-source integration attracted further public attention on the potential importance of open-source software (OSS). Indeed, major large commercial IT companies have started to integrate open-source software into their core strategies. Despite the widespread doubts and resistance during the early stages of open source revolution, there has recently been a “change of perception” in the software development industry towards incorporating open source strategies into their business models.

This master thesis investigates the open source software scene in Sweden by examining Swedish firms that develop software products either based on open source components (hybrid model) or just open source products (pure open source model). After analyzing the market based on the business models of these firms, further details of the open source strategies pursued by these firms have been analyzed. Our study then finalizes the investigation with an analysis of the open source development scene in Sweden, which we use to determine the characteristics of the software industry in Sweden.

Our conclusions reveal that open source strategy shares most of its components with innovation strategy (with some components found to be specific to open source strategy only), confirming the link between open source software and innovation. Therefore, firms that work with open source software have to pay attention to innovation and form an appropriate innovation and open source strategy if they want to be successful in the software industry.

Performance Evaluation of Embedded Microcomputers for Avionics Applications2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Embedded microcomputers are used in a wide range of applications nowadays. Avionics is one of these areas and requires extra attention regarding reliability and determinism. Thus, these issues should also be born in mind in addition to performance when evaluating embedded microcomputers.

This master thesis suggests a framework for performance evaluation of two members of the PowerPC microprocessor family, namely the MPC5554 from Freescale and PPC440EPx from AMCC, and analyzes the results within and between these processors. The framework can be generalized to be used in any microprocessor family, if required.

Apart from performance evaluation, this thesis also suggests also a new terminology by introducing the concept of determinism levels to be able to estimate determinism issues in avionics applications more clearly, which is crucial regarding the requirements and working conditions of this very application. Such estimation does not include any practical results as in performance evaluation, but rather remains theoretical. Similar to Automark™ used by AutoBench™ in the EEMBC Benchmark Suite, we introduce a new performance metric score that we call ”Aviomark” and we carry out a detailed comparison of Aviomark with the traditional Automark™ score to be able to see how Aviomark differs from Automark™ in behavior.

Finally, we have developed a graphical user interface (GUI) which works in parallel with the Green Hills MULTI Integrated Development Environment (IDE) in order to simplify and automate the evaluation process. By the help of the GUI, the users will be able to easily evaluate their specific PowerPC processors by starting the debugging from MULTI IDE.

The consequences of perceived discrimination on internalizing mental health outcomes for immigrant adolescents in OECD countries: A systematic literature review2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the last few decades the focus of immigration flows has been predominantly toward member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Immigration is a process full of challenges, and perceiving as being discriminated by host country natives is one of the biggest difficulties for the immigrants. This challenge is especially represented in immigrant adolescent population due to their higher sensitivity of perception of others. Thus, perceived discrimination characterized as being a significant negative consequence resulting internalizing mental health outcomes for immigrant adolescents. Therefore, the aim of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review in order to identify and discuss the findings of the existing studies that focus on the consequences of perceived discrimination on internalizing mental health outcomes for immigrant adolescents in OECD countries. The systematic review included 16 studies for data extraction. The results showed that perceived discrimination has significant negative consequences on internalizing mental health outcomes for immigrant adolescents in OEDC countries resulting in higher levels of: depression, anxiety, psycho-somatization, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsession-compulsion symptoms. However, within this relationship, there are also moderating and mediating variables. Self-esteem, familism and cognitive appraisal of discriminatory events were characterized as mediators. Parental support, adherence to traditional family values, acculturation, transcultural identity, older age, higher socioeconomic status (SES), and ethnic identity were characterized as moderators. It is recommended that the negative consequences of perceived discrimination on internalizing mental health outcomes should be taken into consideration on societal levels and in mental health fields when planning interventions and therapies for immigrant adolescents. Additionally, further research in this field should be conducted in other OECD countries with different immigrant groups in order to increase the generalizability of the findings.

Stable and Unstable Debt Dynamics: Does Debt Monetizing Policy Matter?2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis analyzes the effect of the two Debt Financing policies: Monetary and Bond Issuing, on the Dynamics Development. Economic variables, like GDP growth, interest rate and inflation are discussed, as the key determinants in the Debt Dynamics process development. The proposition of countries EMU members having higher Debt Dynam-ics level is suggested. This proposition is based on the fact that EMU member countries cannot use their Monetary policy to the extend it is needed in hard times. Due to this lack of choice EMU members can only intensively use Bond financing. The empirical findings of the paper indicate that the difference in Debt Dynamics between the euro us-ing and non-using countries exists. The difference indicates that the EMU member countries tend to have higher Debt Dynamics than the rest of the EU countries. These findings are discussed from different sides, concluding that Monetary Policy does mat-ter in certain cases. At the same time a quite high level of Debt Dynamics in both groups is discovered, which is also an interesting issue to address.

Entrepreneurship in a Global Context: Case Studies from Start-ups in China, Lebanon and Sweden2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, we have investigated what skill sets entrepreneurs apply in order to become entrepreneurs, how entrepreneurs are influenced by globalisation and how they overcome societal barriers in their countries.

The thesis consists of case studies with entrepreneurs from three firms in China, Lebanon and Sweden. It examines the societal barriers in each country, as well as what skill sets helped the entrepreneurs overcome these barriers.

We found that they were all to a high degree utilising the Internet and the possibil-ity of interacting with the global world. Their societal barriers differed, but the ways in which they overcame them did not differ significantly. In our limited study, the more difficult the local barrier is, the more global the firm is.

We would infer from our analysis that entrepreneurs are influenced both by the global society and their national society. The higher the societal barriers, the more skills were needed to overcome them.

Dress code: sustainable fashion: Bridging the attitude-behaviour gap2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates previous research on four barriers that hinder consumers from buying sustainable fashion; style/design, price, convenience and information/knowledge. Using a mixed methods approach, a survey has been performed on members of the general public in London as well as interviews with two professionals in the fashion industry with knowledge on sustainability in fashion. Looking through the lens of the attitude-behaviour gap the consumers’ attitude and behaviour towards sustainable fashion is analysed in order to find answers on how to bridge the gap. Also, two null hypothesises and alternative hy-pothesises were set in order to see if there were any significant differences between the genders.

The results show that style/design and price are not as much of barriers as convenience and information/knowledge. The female respondents demonstrate a more positive attitude towards sustainable fashion consumption in their answers than the males, however the set hypothesises did not show any significant difference between the genders. In order to overcome the barriers, the results show not only to inform consumers and make it more convenient to get sustainable fashion, but there is also a need for a paradigm-shift in people’s view on fashion in order to move towards sustainability in fashion.

Whiplash: Preskription och adekvat kausalitet vid trafikolyckor2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Whiplash is a bodily injury, where the person that is injured is subjected to force towards the neck, mainly in traffic accidents. Even low speed accidents can cause severe damage due to the complicated muscle and nerve structure of the neck. Symptoms range from neck aches and headaches to numb fingers and this makes the Whiplash injury difficult to diagnose. Whiplash is also a treacherous injury due to the fact that the symptoms can not be objectively verified. The principal symptom of the injury is pain, which is to its nature highly subjective. One problem that is fairly unique for Whiplash is that it can take several years for the injury to expose itself.

The starting point for the essay is to examine what kind of problems that might, given the unique character of Whiplash, present themselves to the victim of Whiplash. The problem of verifying the symptoms objectively, and the fact that more than 90% of the people subjected to this kind of injury manage to recover, means that the remaining 10% are viewed sceptically by the insurance companies. These persons often claim that the injury of Whiplash is due to a different, competing incident. The right to compensation, in case of an accident, is a fundamental pillar of the Swedish welfare society. Few people would object to this, but the general perception is also that compensation should not be paid to anyone that has not been subjected to an injury. However, this pose a problem to the Whiplash victim, where a significant amount of time often passes before the pain caused by the injury reveals itself. The requirements placed by the courts on the burden of proof, and whom is responsible for obtaining this evidence, are questions that naturally arises in Whiplash related dis-putes. The verdict of the courts is often based on the medical evaluation provided by the arguing parties. Unfortunately the opinions of the various doctors involved are often contradictory.

A consequence caused by the fact that a long time may pass before the Whiplash related pains reveal themselves is that the statute of limitation may have expired before the injured person has a possibility to pursue a claim of compensation in court. The 31 § (ex 28 §) of the Swedish traffic regulation is not very clear on this issue and only states that the statute of limitations relating to traffic accidents are three and ten years respectively. The start of the limitation period occurs when the person wishing to file a claim has sufficient knowledge to do so. What is meant by sufficient knowledge is not further specified in paragraph 31 TSL; this has been left in the hands of the court to decide. Until recently the verdicts of the court have often been in favour of the in-surance companies. This in the sense that the statute of limitation was considered to start at the time of the accident; a point in time that could easily be objectively verified. This had the unfortunate consequence of often leaving Whiplash victims in a position where they would be facing a fait accompli, i.e. of having their claims rejected due to the statute of limitation. One could say that a conflict existed between the injured person’s need for compensation and the insurance companies’ need of settling insurance claims in a quick an orderly fashion. However, in recent years the Swedish Supreme Court has made several rulings to specify what is meant by “sufficient knowledge”.

Unfortunately these problems show no signs of becoming less relevant, with the amount of accidents resulting in Whiplash injuries estimated to amount to more than half of the 60 000 cases of personal injuries reported to the Swedish insurance compa-nies in 2003.

A TRIPLE-Oriented Approach for Integrating Higher-Order Rules and External Contexts2008In: Web Reasoning and Rule Systems, Second International Conference, RR 2008, Karlsruhe, Germany, October 31-November 1, 2008, Heidelberg: Springer , 2008, p. 214-221Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, many researchers in the area of reasoning have focussed on the adoption of rule languages for the Semantic Web that led to remarkable approaches offering various functionality. On one hand, this included language elements of the rule part itself like contexts, higher-orderness, and non-monotonic negation. On the other hand, the proper integration with ontology languages like RDF and OWL had to consider language-speci c properties like disjunctivity as well as the demand for using existing external components. The paper proposes a T

riple-oriented hybrid language that integrates the mentioned language elements.

Enterprise Ontology based Artefact Management2008In: INFORMATIK 2008, Beherrschbare Systeme - dank Informatik: Workshop Applications of Semantic Technologies, 2008, p. 681-687Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Structuring enterprise information and supporting knowledge management is a growing application field for enterprise ontologies. Based on an industrial case from automotive supplier industries, the paper proposes the use of an ontology for artefact management in engineering of dependable systems, illustrated by the tool ArtefactManager. Navigation and search in the ArtefactManager is performed using categorizations of artefacts by means of so-called taxonomic paths through the enterprise ontology. One of the main challenges is to permit evolution at least for those parts of the ontology which are used for categorizing artefacts. This paper introduces an approach to support the evolution process on the taxonomy level in conjunction with the level of categorizations.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ett vätternära åldrande2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain a greater understanding of how companies use different communication strategies related to sustainability in order to affect the consumers’ perceptions. More precisely it is the commercials of two Swedish companies, Apoteket and Ica, that are being studied. The companies have both been awarded as the top most sustainable companies in Sweden according to Swedish consumers. In order to acknowledge which strategies are being used and to investigate how the companies take advantage of their position as authorities a multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) is being used both as theory and method. The study’s theoretical framework is enhanced with research regarding advertising, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and persuasion strategies. The commercials are profoundly examined using MCDA where both language and visual signs are being studied. Research questions based on the theoretical framework are being used in order to review the material systematically and create thematic schemes.

The result indicates that common discourses exist in how the companies communicate with the public. Humour and emotions are central in the material and the visual choices contribute with associations regarding sustainability and health despite being expressed clearly. Apoteket and Ica fulfil the ethical and philanthropic stages of responsibility from the recipient’s perspective. Commonly for the two companies are the fact that the consumers are forced to engage in order for Ica and Apoteket to take their responsibility. Nonetheless the companies position themselves as good citizens who take responsibility for their businesses.

Biotech Innovations and Fundamental Rights2012Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Biotechnology is a recognized research area that has increasingly advanced into new technologies and modern practices raising several legal, ethical and regulatory issues. The revolutionary speed of biotech innovations has had a significant impact on the protection of the rights of the individual. Fundamental rights provide a framework within which the justification of limitations and restrictions to biotechnology innovations and research results have to be assessed. The legal regulation of scientific research and scientific investigations impact more and more directly on the freedom of research and therapies as well as on the broad diffusion of knowledge. Closely related is also the debated question of the technological manipulation of life and the boundary of scientific knowledge with regard to the topical question of genetic invention patents and their side effects on access to scientific information and health care opportunities.

Drawing on expertise from different disciplines, the volume comprises invited papers and plenary presentations given at the conference entitled “Biotech Innovations & Fundamental Rights” that took place on Januray 20-21 2011 at the Department of Juridical Sciences of the University of Ferrara. Each contribution covers a different aspect of the legal and scientific issues involved in regulation of biotechnology. In particular the focus of attention has been given to genetic research, genetic data, freedom of scientific research in genetics and biotech patents

Övergångsfasen till ISO 9001:2015 i ett marknadsledande företag2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis work has been carried out in a market-leading company in the painting industry, where the main focus of the report focuses on which areas in the company that needs improvement in order to certify itself against ISO 9001:2015. The production department has been reported as an independent company within the company in order to apply the requirements of the standard that fall on management.

The report has addressed the problems that most companies have in the transition process to ISO 9001:2015. The issues are formulated to provide answer to how well the studied company meets the requirement at current situation and then present a gap-analysis of what needs to be done to meet the requirements that are not met. These analysis leads to a result where key areas of improvement within the company are presented together with proposals to meet the requirements of the ISO-standard.

In order to make the thesis as credible as possible, several different methods have been used and evaluated, to then make a fair assessment of the company’s current situation. The methods presented in the report include, among other things, a method of self-assessment, where the authors have received inspiration from previous thesis works, as well as interviews with an audit firms and relevant staff at the company. An observation/survey has also been conducted on the operators in the company to gain an insight of how they feel about the company’s work with ISO-standards.

The report's discussion and conclusion presents the areas in the business that the company is lacking and suggests how the company should develop these areas. The key areas identified are: continuous improvement, leadership, process orientation and risk-based thinking. These areas have been analyzed by the authors as the most deficient areas that the company should further develop and proposals for how to develop these areas have been presented. The action proposals are based on the authors' knowledge and experience, where the proposals were developed in consultation with supervisors and staff at the company. The conclusion also evaluates the suitability of methods and tools for implementing ISO 9001: 2015 in an organization.

Samtal och förändring i tvångssituation: En studie av professionellas upplevelser av samtal med klienter med narkotikamissbruk inom kriminalvård2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Within the three ”legs” of the Swedish Prison and Probation system; detention centre, prison and probation office, there are conversations held with the clients, with the purpose of bringing about a change. This essay is focused on the conversations with the clients who are not only criminals, but also have a drug abuse. This fact makes the conversations more difficult because of many underlying factors, both from the perspective of the client and of the authority. To be able to create a good climate for discussion which could lead to change, the method of Motivational Interviewing (MI) is used. MI is the foundation of the prison and probation authority´s everyday work with clients. A former client and drug addict, has been interviewed as well as nine professionals. The essay has a phenomenological perspective. The results of the interviews and what is found in the literature has been analyzed from a humanistic and existentialistic perspective as well as a communicative perspective.

The most important findings in the study are that use of conversations is a very important and basic method to be able to carry on a good work with the most difficult clients within the Swedish Prison and Probation system. Yet, this essay also shows factors which makes the conversations towards change more difficult. The conclusion is drawn that the professionals within the Prison and Probation system, have to take these factors into consideration, to be able to do their work. Motivational Interviewing as an approach can therefore be, according to the result, a very good foundation in these conversations. The study also shows that there are still things that could be better, especially that the conversations can be influenced by several of inner and outer factors, which are specified in the study. There are many of the interviewed, that are not using the MI technique, though that could mean that the method in it self, is easy to embrace because of its base on fundamental human values. Therefore some of the MI techniques can be seen among the interviewed that stated that they didn´t have any use of the method. The staff of the Prison and Probation system have, despite the many difficulties in the work, a unique opportunity to discuss change, no matter if MI is used as a method or not.

The influence of relational conflicts on spousal entrepreneurs‘ team performance2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Principal Topic:

During the last decade entrepreneurial teams have gained increased attention among entrepreneurship scholars. Interestingly, entrepreneurial teams composed of spousal couples constitute the most common type of entrepreneurial team (Ruef, 2010; Hellerstedt, 2009). One reason for this strong prevalence of spousal teams is that the spousal couple is the focal point of any family system and is characterized by mutual affinity, and trust—characteristics considered as beneficial for entrepreneurial team formation (Ruef, 2010). However, relational and affective conflicts within teams have been argued to be detrimental to venture performance (Ensley et al 2002). Therefore, it is interesting to consider that spousal couples often go through challenging periods in terms of relational conflicts and the intensity of these conflicts may depend on the family stage spousal couples find themselves (Pollmann-Schult, 2014). To build our hypotheses, we build on literatures on entrepreneurial teams (Blatt, 2009), entrepreneurs’ relational embeddedness (Granovetter, 1992) and family embeddedness (Aldrich & Cliff, 2003).

    Method:

Our empirical setting is based on data provided by Statistics Sweden and requires the matching of several databases: The first database is LISA – a database comprising all legal residents of Sweden. The second database is RAMS which provides yearly data on all registered firms. Finally, the multi-generational database provides us with information on spousal couples. By linking individuals to their families as well as through constructing links between the firm-level database, RAMS, and the individual-level database, LISA, we are able to identify businesses run by spousal partners. Following Hill et al (2011) we classify the family life stages according to individuals’ age and existence of children and their age.

    Results and Implications:

With our research we contribute to the literatures on entrepreneurial teams (Blatt, 2009), research on entrepreneurs’ relational embeddedness (Granovetter, 1992) and family embeddedness (Aldrich & Cliff, 2003). We contribute to the entrepreneurial team literature by showing that the spousal relationship is influenced by relational dynamics such as separation and family stage. We further contribute to the strand of entrepreneurs’ relational embeddedness by showing that specific relational resources accrue due to the spouses’ relational embeddedness, which may change over family stage and may be disrupted by relational conflicts.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Exploring the ICT market with learning´s from a leading market: With an internationalization perspective2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of the thesis is “To explore the Thai ICT market and identify

differences with the leading market” Where the research questions are:

    1. How are the main actors influencing the ICT market in Thailand?

    2. How can the ICT market in Thailand be improved by identifying the gaps to

    the leading market?

Method – For reaching the purpose a qualitative case study has been carried out,

methods that are used are interviews, observations, document studies and literature

study. Secondary data has been collected from document studies and was compiled in

excel documents. Primary data has been collected from interviews, employees at

Ericsson in Thailand has contributed when gather data about organizational

culture. Interview with representatives from institutions in Thailand were made to

achieve current data. Interviews were made to receive a primary source of information

with high focus on the thesis subject and strengthen by secondary data.

Findings – The most urgent problem to improve the ICT market in Thailand is to

develop the infrastructure. The infrastructure needs to be developed in rural areas and

urban areas. Institutions in ICT need to do active work on the market in order to

expand and develop the market. Service operator’s needs to standardise and offer less

price plans in order to minimize confusion among the consumers. The consumers

need to increase their usage of ICT services in order to decrease the gap to the leading

ICT market. One solution could be that the government push the development with all

actors on the ICT market. Changing the foreign business act can lead to investments

needed to expand the infrastructure. Further, creating a demand of higher technology

from the consumer’s perspective will pressure the actors to develop robust network of

high technology and benefit future development of technology.

Implications – This study has been carried out on location in Thailand but

communication has not been made in the national language in Thailand, which can

contribute to misunderstandings of data. The study´s result is strengthened by being

on location in Thailand, gathering primary data by interviews and do observations on

    place in the target environment.

Delimitations – The delimitations have been made to look at the ICT market from

Thailand’s perspective with learning’s from Sweden. Further, delimitations to explore

the main actors that are influencing the market has been done. A market has many

environmental forces and they needed to be restricted in this study.

Psykosocial arbetsmiljö i en svensk fordonsindustri: En kvantitativ studie av upplevelser och individuella skillnader2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of employer branding, gender and age on employee retention in an organization from the industrial sector in Jönköping, Sweden. Furthermore, the study aimed to investigate gender-related differences in the willingness to stay in the organization. A quantitative approach was used where a survey was conducted. The sample for the study consisted of 118 study participants (25 women and 93 men), who were selected using a convenience selection. The scales that were used for this study was Employer Attractiveness Scale (Berthon, Ewing & Hah, 2005) to measure the employees perception of employer branding and Turnover Cognition Scale (Paillé, 2012) to measure the employees willingness to leave the organization. Both scales were translated from English to Swedish that later was tested through a pilot-study. Multiple linear regression and independent sample t-test were used to analyze the data. Results showed that employer branding and age significantly predicted employee retention in the chosen organization which confirmed previous studies. The result for independent sample t-test showed that it was no significant differences between gender and employee retention. Thus, it differed from previous studies.

University Brand Personality from the Perspective of Students: A case study conducted at Jönköping University2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The higher education sector has become more competitive and universities are now more actively engaged in branding. One way of branding is to utilise the concept of brand personality, which can be measured and adjusted with the help of the University Brand Personality Scale (UBPS).  However, much emphasis is put solely on measuring and adjusting while little emphasis is being put on how to actually achieve the intended brand outcome.

Purpose: To research university brand personality from the perspective of students, the UBPS will be adapted. It consists of six intangible dimensions of brand personality. So-called subcomponents for each dimension will be found and evaluated. These subcomponents constitute tangible and intangible attributes that, from a students’ perspective, relate to the UBPS dimensions. This research sets out to help researchers as well as practitioners to better understand university brand personality in all its facets.

Method: The chosen research method is an exploratory study utilising a multi-method, qualitative research approach as well as thematic analysis. This has been done through conducting a case study at Jönköping University, Sweden. In a first step, focus groups were used to identify an item pool of subcomponents. In a second step, interviews were conducted to determine which of these subcomponents are the most important ones to students and why.

Conclusion:  The outcome of this research is an insightful adaption of the UBPS from the perspective of students, which can be used to guide further research as well as practitioners who work with university branding. A broad item pool has been generated, containing subcomponents for each of the UBPS dimensions. The motivations behind these items has been researched while identifying the most important ones to create the final adaption of the model.

Social e-Atmospherics in Practice (or not): A French and Turkish Web Designers’ Perspectives2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Little is known about the development of social e-atmospherics. And yet, e-atmospherics have motivated an emerging body of research which reports that both better layouts and ‘recognized’ atmospherics encourage consumers to modify their shopping habits. While the literature has analyzed mainly the functional (design) aspect of e-atmospherics, little has been done in terms of linking its characteristics’ to social (co-) creation. This paper attempts to redress the imbalance by exploring the anatomy from a website designer perspective of the social dimension of design in relation to e-atmospherics, which includes factors such as the aesthetic design of space and the influence of visual cues as a socially constructed meaning. We identify the challenges that web designers as social agents, who interact within intangible social reference sets, restricted by social standards, value, beliefs, status and duties, face daily within their work. We aim to review the current understanding of the importance and voluntary integration of social cues displayed by web designers from a mature market and an emerging market, and provides an analysis based recommendation towards the development of an integrated e-social atmospheric framework. Results report exploratory findings from questionnaires with 10 French and 16 Turkish web designers. These allow us to re-interpret the web designers’ reality regarding social e-atmospherics. We contend that by comprehending (before any consumer/client input) social capital, daily micro practices, habits and routine of designers, a deeper understanding of social e-atmospherics possible functions in the future will be unpacked.

Self-care management of type 1 diabetes has improved in Swedish schools according to children and adolescents2017In: Acta Paediatrica, ISSN 0803-5253, E-ISSN 1651-2227, Vol. 106, no 12, p. 1987-1993Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: Age-appropriate support for diabetes self-care is essential during school time, and we investigated the perceived quality of support children and adolescents received in 2015 and 2008.

Methods: This national study was based on questionnaires answered by children and adolescents aged 6–15 years of age with type 1 diabetes attending schools or preschools in 2008 (n = 317) and 2015 (n = 570) and separate parental questionnaires. The subjects were recruited by Swedish paediatric diabetes units, with 41/44 taking part in 2008 and 41/42 in 2015.

Results: Fewer participants said they were treated differently in school because of their diabetes in 2015 than 2008. The opportunity to perform insulin boluses and glucose monitoring in privacy increased (80% versus 88%; p < 0.05). Most (83%) adolescents aged 13–15 years were satisfied with the support they received, but levels were lower in girls (p < 0.05). More subjects had hypoglycaemia during school hours (84% versus 70%, p < 0.001), but hypoglycaemia support did not increase and was lower for adolescents than younger children (p < 0.001).

Conclusion: Children and adolescents received more support for type 1 diabetes in Swedish schools in 2015 than 2008, but more support is needed by girls and during hypoglycaemia.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Production Localization Factors: An Industrial and Literature Based Review2013In: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Manufacturing Research (ICMR2013) / [ed] E. Shehab, P. Ball & B. Tjahjono, International Conference on Manufacturing Research (ICMR) , 2013, p. 489-494Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Decision are commonly based on the available or easily accessible information; this is also true for more complex assessments like production localization. Where to locate production is often a key strategic decisions that has great impact on a company’s profitability for a long time; insufficient business intelligence may therefore have grave consequences. Six production localization factor studies have been assessed to see if they are focusing on the same issues and if there are any gaps. A new approach for structuring localization factors and the localization process is then presented and assessed with regards to some previously identified critical issues.
