    Abstract [en]

    In the last decades, numerous developments and legal changes moved the utility industry towards a liberalized market. Utility enterprises have to stay competitive and reduce costs while managing more complex IT systems. The authors of this work see special demand for aligning business and IT for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in this industry and identify the development of a reference enterprise architecture (R-EA) as a key for this issue. This work investigates how to develop such a reference model, which comprises data acquisition as well as validation methods.

    Abstract [en]

    In most economic sectors organizations face rapid environmental changes like regulations. Such changes can force them to adjust both their organizational and operational structure. For instance, in the energy utility sector numerous developments moved German Public Utilities (PUs) towards a liberalized market. Nowadays PUs have to stay competitive while managing a heterogeneous information technology (IT) landscape. We address this demand for aligning business and IT by combining the holistic perspective of Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) with the characteristic of reference modeling to reuse knowledge in a problem domain. Therefore, we utilize configurative reference modeling within Design Science Research (DSR). The artefact at hand is a method for developing a Reference Enterprise Architecture (R-EA), which is applied in the problem domain of PUs. Our contributions are the (i) adaptation of Configurative Reference Modelling (CRM) to develop a R-EA and (ii) a procedure how to elicit knowledge for R-EA development method.

    Abstract [en]

    During the last 20 years, much research work has been spent on determining which notation is the “best” one for business process modelling in industrial practice. However, most of this work has been performed outside the actual application context, i.e. often in labs, academic environments or experimental settings. We aim at contributing to the field by presenting and discussing a case of selecting the notation for a complete organization. More concrete, the paper covers the process of making a decision which notation is the most appropriate one for a medium-sized organization from utility industries. The steps taken in this decision making process include the analysis of requirements originating from regulation in the domain, a survey among the future users of the notation, and the analysis and evaluation of organizational requirements. The main contributions of this paper are (1) a real-world example illustrating issues and challenges when deciding on the “right” process modeling notation including influences from the application domain, (2) a survey comparing the understandability of notations from the end user perspective and (3) lessons learned from the decision making process and the survey.

    Abstract [en]

    Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) is expected to contribute to strategic planning and systematic development of enterprises by capturing the essential structures and processes of an enterprise on different architectural levels (e.g. business, data, application, technology) and showing inter-dependencies. Capabilities in EAM are among the subjects in research which have received substantial attention during the last years, but still are not thoroughly defined regarding their characteristics, elements and lifecycle processes. Many different definitions of the term capability exist and different views on what the elements of capabilities are have been presented. The main contributions of the paper are (a) an analysis and discussion of the literature on capabilities in EAM, (b) a conceptualization of EAM capability identifying the core elements and characteristics, and (c) the results of expert interviews for validating this conceptualization.

    Digital signage and targeted advertisement based on personal preferences and digital business models2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Digital signage in general refers to the provision of content (advertisements, news, assistance) on electronic scoreboards or large displays in places where many people are present or passing by. The more this content is expected to be tailored for specific user groups, the more context information is required, like, e.g., the preferences or profiles of target users or user groups. The ideal digital signage solution would be able to provide individualized content for the audience consuming the information at any time: if only one person is present, the content would be personalized for this person; if a group of persons is present the demand of all should be met. Based on a digital signage solution for elevator doors, the paper investigates the intersecting of preferences as a contribution to determine the most relevant content for a group of users. This intersection of preferences serves as a basis for new business models for interactive elevator digital signage. The main contributions of the paper are (1) an industrial case of digital business model innovation motivating contextual digital signage, (2) a technical approach for intersecting personal preferences, and (3) a methodical approach for digital business model innovation.

    Capability management has been the subject of a lot of research during the past years. Many of the results achieved have been presented in the previous chapters. Although the advancements have been substantial, a number of open issues and research questions remain. The chapter gives a summary on the ongoing research in the field and an outlook on future activities. More specifically, we discuss capability management for increasing cyber resilience, supporting digital transformation in organizations, managing big data, as well as carrying out continuous information system development.

    The Internet of Things, Enterprise Social Networks, Adaptive Case Management, Mobility Systems, Analytics for Big Data, and Cloud environments are emerging to support smart connected i.e. digital products and services and the digital transformation. Biological metaphors of living and adaptable ecosystems provide the logical foundation for selfoptimizing and resilient run-time environments for intelligent business services and related distributed information systems with service-oriented digitization architectures. We are investigating mechanisms for flexible adaptation and evolution of information systems with digital architecture in the context of the ongoing digital transformation. Our aim is to support flexibility and agile transformation for both business and related information systems through adaptation and dynamical evolution of their digital architectures. The present research paper investigates mechanisms of decision analytics for digitization architectures, putting a spotlight to Internet of Things architectures, by extending original enterprise architecture reference models with digitization architectures and their multiperspective architectural decision management.

Biological metaphors of living and adaptable ecosystems provide the logical foundation for self-optimizing and resilient run-time environments for intelligent business services and service-oriented enterprise architectures. Our aim is to support flexibility and agile transformations for both business domains and related information technology. The present research paper investigates mechanisms for decision analytics in the context of multi-perspective explorations of enterprise services and their digital enterprise architectures by extending original architecture reference models with state of art elements for agile architectural engineering for the digitization and collaborative architectural decision support. The paper’s context focuses on digital transformations of business and IT and integrates fundamental mappings between adaptable digital enterprise architectures and service-oriented information systems. We are putting a spotlight on the example domain – Internet of Things.

    New business information systems are integrating emerging cloud infrastructures with service-oriented platforms and intelligent user-centered mobile systems. Both architecture engineering and management of service-oriented enterprise architectures is complex and has to integrate synergistic disciplines like EAM - Enterprise Architecture and Management for Services & Cloud Computing, Semantic-based Decision Support through Ontologies and Knowledge-based Systems, Big Data Management, as well as Mobility and Collaboration Systems. It is necessary to identify affected decisions by runtime changes of a service-oriented runtime environment and architecture. We have to make transparent the impact of these changes over the integral landscape of affected EAM-capabilities, like directly and transitively impacted business categories, processes, applications, services, platforms and infrastructures. The paper describes a new Metamodel-based integration approach for Service-oriented Reference Enterprise Architectures.

    The digital transformation of our society changes the way we live, work, learn, communicate, and collaborate. The digitization of software-intensive products and services is enabled basically by four megatrends: Cloud Computing, Big Data Mobile Systems, and Social Technologies. This disruptive change interacts with all information processes and systems that are important business enablers for the current digital transformation. The Internet of Things, Social Collaboration Systems for Adaptive Case Management, Mobility Systems and Services for Big Data in Cloud Services environments are emerging to support intelligent user-centered and social community systems. Modern enterprises see themselves confronted with an ever growing design space to engineer business models of the future as well as their IT support, respectively. The decision analytics in this field becomes increasingly complex and decision support, particularly for the development and evolution of sustainable enterprise architectures (EA), is duly needed. With the advent of intelligent user-centered and social community systems, the challenging decision processes can be supported in more flexible and intuitive ways. Tapping into these systems and techniques, the engineers and managers of the enterprise architecture become part of a viable enterprise, i.e. a resilient and continuously evolving system that develops innovative business models.

    Abstract [en]

    Digitization fosters the development of IT environments with many rather small structures, like Internet of Things (IoT), Microservices, or mobility systems. They are needed to support flexible and agile digitized products and services. The goal is to create service-oriented enterprise architectures (EA) that are self-optimizing and resilient. The present research paper investigates methods for decision-making concerning digitization architectures for Internet of Things and Microservices. They are based on evolving enterprise architecture reference models and state of the art elements for architectural engineering for micro-granular systems. Decision analytics in this field becomes increasingly complex and decision support, particularly for the development and evolution of sustainable enterprise architectures, is sorely needed. The challenging of the decision processes can be supported with in a more flexible and intuitive way by an architecture management cockpit.

    Abstract [en]

    Social networks, smart portable devices, Internet of Things (IoT) on base of technologies like analytics for big data and cloud services are emerging to support flexible connected products and agile services as the new wave of digital transformation. Biological metaphors of living and adaptable ecosystems with service-oriented enterprise architectures provide the foundation for self-optimizing and resilient run-time environments for intelligent business services and related distributed information systems. We are extending Enterprise Architecture (EA) with mechanisms for flexible adaptation and evolution of information systems having distributed IoT and other micro-granular digital architecture to support next digitization products, services, and processes. Our aim is to support flexibility and agile transformation for both IT and business capabilities through adaptive digital enterprise architectures. The present research paper investigates additionally decision mechanisms in the context of multi-perspective explorations of enterprise services and Internet of Things architectures by extending original enterprise architecture reference models with state of art elements for architectural engineering and digitization.

    The digital transformation of our society changes the way we live, work, learn, communicate, and collaborate. This disruptive change drive current and next information processes and systems that are important business enablers for the context of digitization since years. Our aim is to support flexibility and agile transformations for both business domains and related information technology with more flexible enterprise information systems through adaptation and evolution of digital architectures. The present research paper investigates the continuous bottom-up integration of micro-granular architectures for a huge amount of dynamically growing systems and services, like Microservices and the Internet of Things, as part of a new composed digital architecture. To integrate micro-granular architecture models into living architectural model versions we are extending enterprise architecture reference models by state of art elements for agile architectural engineering to support digital products, services, and processes.

    Excellence in IT is both a driver and a key enabler of the digital transformation. The digital transformation changes the way we live, work, learn, communicate, and collaborate. The Internet of Things (IoT) fundamentally influences today's digital strategies with disruptive business operating models and fast changing markets. New business information systems are integrating emerging Internet of Things infrastructures and components. With the huge diversity of Internet of Things technologies and products organizations have to leverage and extend previous Enterprise Architecture efforts to enable business value by integrating Internet of Things architectures. Both architecture engineering and management of current information systems and business models are complex and currently integrating beside the Internet of Things synergistic subjects, like Enterprise Architecture in context with services & cloud computing, semantic-based decision support through ontologies and knowledge-based systems, big data management, as well as mobility and collaboration networks. To provide adequate decision support for complex business/IT environments, we have to make transparent the impact of business and IT changes over the integral landscape of affected architectural capabilities, like directly and transitively impacted IoT-objects, business categories, processes, applications, services, platforms and infrastructures. The paper describes a new metamodel-based approach for integrating Internet of Things architectural objects, which are semi-automatically federated into a holistic Digital Enterprise Architecture environment.

    Abstract [en]

    During the last years, an increasing number of successful cases of using ontologies in industrial application scenarios have been reported, the majority of these cases stem from large enterprises. The intention of this paper is to contribute to an understanding of potentials and limits of ontology-based solutions in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). The focus is on identifying application areas for ontologies, which motivate the development of specialised ontology construction methods. The paper is based on results from a survey performed among 113 SME in Sweden, most of them from manufacturing industries. The results of the survey indicate a need from SME in three application areas: (1) management of product configuration and variability, (2) information search and retrieval, and (3) management of project documents.

    The work presented is part of the research field information logistics, which investigates and develops concepts and technologies for improving information flow in organisations. The intention of this paper is to contribute to an understanding of information management problems in enterprises, and also improvement potentials of current information systems. The paper presents results of a study focusing on information overload in industrial enterprises, an area that previously has attracted little academic attention. Two areas are investigated: is information overload perceived as a problem in enterprises, and which application areas of enterprise information management should be prioritised for improvement activities? The survey was sent to 436 enterprises in the South of Sweden, most of them small and medium-sized enterprises, and received 164 valid responses. The sample used for the paper includes industrial enterprises from manufacturing, construction, and electronics industries, which accounts for approximately 80% of the responses.When analysing the data from the study, the paper follows the opinion of various scholars in the field that the complexity of an application case is an essential parameter to take into account when deciding on improvement potential. The more complex the application scenario is, the more likely is the usefulness of IT solutions for improving information flow. Research on complexity of projects proposes to define complexity as “consisting of many varied interrelated parts”, to distinguish between organisational and technological complexity, and to operationalise this in terms of “differentiation and interdependence”.One result of the study is a clear indication that information overload is perceived as a problem in industrial enterprises, which surfaces in problems such as finding the right information needed for a work task, and in the time needed to structure and store information. Furthermore, the results indicate two application areas that offer improvement potential: information management with focus on search and retrieval, and management of product information.
