Critical success factors for implementation of green IT in developing countries:: The case of E-waste in Kenya2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

As much as going green is a very popular topic of discussion and much emphasis is put on the subject, not all areas, topics and locations are explored. Some continents have effectively, strategically and efficiently addressed the problem while others are still fighting to address it. We undertook this research to find out what it takes to ensure that the e-waste problem is solved in a developing country. The purpose of the study was to investigate what factors contributed at a financial, technological and environmental level to the prosperity of the e-waste project in Kenya. The financial factor attempts to investigate if any economic value is achieved. The technological factor investigates if there is any new technology added to the recycled and the technology used to breakdown the e-waste.The environmental factor deals with how the environment is affected by e-waste.

To achieve this, a questionnaire, interviews and reports were used to collect data. The semi-structured approach of the interviews employed allowed us to achieve an in-depth approach of collecting data. This in turn helped us collect many different views of the subject.

Various theories where used in addition to the data collected so as to give an interpretation and create scenarios of various outcomes should the models be applied. The translation of this data led to results showing that not all the three factors have to be in place to ensure success. Depending on which theory was applied some factors become more attainable than others. However all three factors are achievable and attainable when dealing with green IT. It became apparent that other factors like sensitization, government involvement and extended producer responsibility apart from the three did also have a direct impact on the result.

    Abstract [sv]

Critical advances in bridging personal health informatics and clinical informatics2012Ingår i: IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics, ISSN 0943-4747, Vol. 7, nr 1, s. 48-55Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: To provide a survey over significant developments in the area of linking personal health informatics and clinical informatics, to give insights into critical advances and to discuss open problems and opportunities in this area.

Methods: A scoping review over the literature published in scientific journals and relevant conference proceedings in the intersection between personal health informatics and clinical informatics over the years 2010 and 2011 was performed.

Results: The publications analyzed are related to two main topics, namely "Sharing information and collaborating through personal health records, portals and social networks" and "Integration of personal health systems with clinical information systems". For the first topic, results are presented according to five different themes: "Patient expectations and attitudes", "Real use experiences", "Changes for care providers", "Barriers to adoption" and "Proposed technical infrastructures". For the second topic, two different themes were found, namely "Technical architectures and interoperability" and "Security, safety and privacy issues".

Discussion: Results show a number of gaps between the information needs of patients and the information care provider organizations provide to them as well as the lack of a trusted technical, ethical and regulatory framework regarding information sharing.

Conclusions: Despite recent developments in the areas of personal health informatics and clinical informatics both fields have diverging needs. To support both clinical work processes and empower patients to effectively handle self-care, a number of issues remain unsolved. Open issues include privacy and confidentiality, including trusted sharing of health information and building collaborative environments between patients, their families and care providers. There are further challenges to meet around health and technology literacy as well as to overcome structural and organizational barriers. Frameworks for evaluating personal health informatics applications and pervasive health technology are needed to build up an evidence basis.

Augment App: Potential Implications on E-commerce: A Multi-Case Study on Swedish Online Fashion Retailers2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Retail is shifting from physical shopping experience to a more online experience. However, the transition is not happening without pains and both consumers and companies alike face challenges when it comes to utilizing all the benefits that the flexibility brings. One of the biggest issues that the online fashion industry is facing, is product evaluation and the resulting high returns rate. Customers are unable to fully evaluate the products due to, for example, insufficient information, faulty information and the fact that size guides are not reliable, which are incentives for the customers to send the products back. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to investigate and determine what the key challenges that the online fashion companies face related to their most common product evaluation tools and what effects those challenges have on the companies. Further, this thesis evaluates how implementing an augmented reality tool, the Augment app would affect those challenges. Finally, this study investigates how implementing the Augment app would affect the Swedish online fashion retailers’ competitiveness. To answer these questions, a qualitative multi-case study was conducted with three Swedish online fashion retailers. Conducting an embedded multi-case study allowed for meaningful and generalizable findings as it allowed for both within-case analysis as well as cross-case analysis.

The results of the study found that companies face challenges in regards to providing quality customer service, ensuring e-satisfaction as well as reducing the high percentage of customer product returns for the Swedish online retailers. Further, the study found that the Augment app could not automatically solve all of the challenges on its own. Rather, the Augment app would act as a complement to the current product evaluation tools and be a most welcome addition. Further, by implementing it, a company could build sustainable competitive advantage.

Critical Success Factors across the ERP life cycle: A study of SMEs in Jönköping County2005Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

Enterprise Resource Planning systems are business systems that are expected to integrate all the business’ processes within organization, and since ERP systems are complex and re-quire extensive changes in the organization, it is crucial that the implementation is success-ful. However, the implementation of ERP systems is described as both risky and complex projects.

The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the importance of different critical success factors across the ERP project life cycle within SMEs. Furthermore, we will compare our findings to see if there are differences between larger corporations in the USA and SMEs in the county of Jönköping, Sweden and try to explain the potential differences.

In order to fulfill our purpose, we used a quantitative approach to collect primary data from the SMEs in the county of Jönköping. Our data was thereafter qualitatively analyzed in order to describe our findings.

The conclusions drawn in this thesis is that the following critical success factors are per-ceived to be most important within the SMEs investigated:

    • Infusion stage: Careful selection of package

    • Adoption stage: Top management support

    • Adaptation stage: Project champion

    • Acceptance stage: Project champion

    • Routinization stage: Education on new business processes

    • Infusion stage: Vendor support.

It was apparent that the critical success factors identified in our research differed from the critical success factors identified for the Fortune 500 companies in the USA. However, we have failed to find any valid and reliable reasons for the differences even though we have discussed possible reasons for them.

Multi-sided markets for transforming healthcare service delivery2018Ingår i: Building Continents of Knowledge in Oceans of Data: The Future of Co-Created eHealth / [ed] Adrien Ugon, Daniel Karlsson, Gunnar O. Klein, Anne Moen, Amsterdam: IOS Press, 2018, Vol. 247, s. 626-630Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Changes in healthcare delivery needs have necessitated the design of new models for connecting providers and consumers of services. While healthcare delivery has traditionally been a push market, multi-sided markets offer the potential for transitioning to a pull market for service delivery. However, there is a need to better understand the business model for multi-sided markets as a first step to using them in healthcare. This paper addressed that need and describes a multi-sided market evaluation framework. Our framework identifies patient, governance and service delivery as three levels of brokerage consideration for evaluating multi-sided markets in healthcare.

    Abstract [sv]

    An information architecture framework for the Internet of Things2018Ingår i: Philosophy & Technology, ISSN 2210-5433, E-ISSN 2210-5441, Vol. 32, nr 4, s. 727-744Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper formalizes an approach to the Internet of Things as a socio-technical system of systems and a part of the infosphere. It introduces a principle-based, human-centered approach to designing Internet of Things artifacts as elements of contextual cross-channel ecosystems. It connects the Internet of Things to the conceptualization of cross-channel ecosystems from current information architecture theory and practice, positing that the Internet of Things is both a formal, objective superset of any given ecosystem and a contextual, subjective subset of specifically instantiated ecosystems. The paper argues for the necessity of a transdisciplinary theoretical framework to promote a human-centered generative understanding of the Internet of Things phenomena and their consequences, in accordance with the Metamodel Methodology (M3). It proposes a phenomenology-grounded information architecture model detailing a set of 16 principles and secondary heuristics grouped according to an architectural perspective, which identifies guidelines that support the design of Internet of Things artifacts considering their objective characteristics; a human perspective, which identifies guidelines that support the design of Internet of Things artifacts considering subject/object relationships and the production of meaning; and a systemic perspective, which identifies guidelines that support the design of Internet of Things artifacts as relational parts of information-based ecosystems. These principles and guidelines are meant to provide the foundations for a practice-based approach to designing the Internet of Things–enabled information ecosystems.

Expectations between Parties Playing Similar Roles in Global Software Development: A Psychological Contract Perspective2007Ingår i: 15th European Conference on Information Systems, 2007Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Global software development (GSD), as a mode of information systems development, surfaces various challenges and benefits that are not always present in co-located teams. A psychological contract reflects the written and unwritten expectations, or obligations, of collaborating parties in a transaction. This paper uncovers a set of candidate obligations that make up the psychological contract of parties collaborating in global software development efforts (the GSD psychological contract). Particular focus is applied to certain development roles: business analyst, designer, developer and development-support. A qualitative research approach is employed against various incidents that occurred in development projects performed by a global software product development organization. Finally, opportunities for future research are presented.

Best Practices in Web 2.0 Climate: Competitive Advantage Through Social Networking Tools2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (högskoleexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The usage of social media such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook has expanded drastically. Today almost every organization has a Facebook page and a Twitter account that complements their webpage and their physical stores. However, why and how are they using these social medias?

This research focuses on why and how organizations are using Facebook and Twitter in their business strategy. More specifically, what methods and organizational strategies are used. The requirement for our research was that the organization had to had some success on these social medias but due to time and budget limitations, the research is restricted to three local organizations that have a national presence.

Conducting primary data with three face-to-face semi-structured interviews and obtaining secondary data such as books, theses and academic journals we had the data to make an analysis about how Facebook and Twitter could make these three organizations gain competitive advantage.

By correctly utilizing the tools that social networking sites (SNS) provide; organizations can make way for a differentiation path that provides competitive advantage, build brand awareness, and provide statistical tools for evaluating customer behavior. One of the benefits of SNS is that they are virtually free to implement, both from a capital and human resource investment point of view.

This research shows that organizations utilizing SNS in order to gain competitive advantage need to focus on creating a committed and engaged user base. By keeping in mind the drivers of differentiation: timing, location, linkages and scale, organizations transform their competitive advantage into a sustained competitive advantage.

ePM: Project Management transposed online: The use of information communication tools to support inter-organizational project work2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor paper is to analyze the different technologies used for supporting inter-organizational project work and how these technologies influence the project’s overall success. The results of this research have proved that the main impact ePM tools (e-Project Management tools) have upon inter-organizational projects are in terms of time-savings and easiness of communication when in need for communicating abroad with different business partners. Various types of collaboration tools can help the communication process between organizations and provide the project participants with the means of creating and supporting a collaborative environment. Other perceived benefits of ePM tools have been resulted including: reduce project costs due to time-savings and quality of information which lowers the risks for deficiency occurrences; improve the decision-making process; improve internal and external communication; facilitate knowledge sharing and expertise exchange; and create an agile business environment characterized by innovation, flexibility, faster market reaction and ability to work efficiently. Global time zones and communication skills are challenges to creating an efficient collaborative inter-organizational environment.

Online banking access system: Principles behind choices and further development, seen from a managerial perspective2007Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [en]

Online banking is a young way for banks to reach new and old customers. The concept has emerged over the last decade from being not very utilized to become a major channel for the bigger banks in Sweden but also in the world. This thesis will present a study of what principles the four major Swedish banks have based their decision on when choosing what type of online access system to use. Furthermore try to present what the future principles might be toward online banking access systems. This might also show how new systems might look like and what the banks strives to achieve when making these systems not only safer but more available and usable. The thesis will present what authentication is and how the authentication process is used today. Today in general what is used is the two factor au-thentication which is based upon passwords. This two factor authentication makes it hard for attackers to breach the systems in use today, but there are ways which are emerging to gain access. Such an emerging threat is the SSL-evading Trojans. Still these kinds of threats are not common at all but they need to be considered. Today passwords are the only means we can use to make the authentication processes safe but they are not enough, according to Bill Gates. Therefore we have looked at new ways to complement today’s password based authentication processes; such compliments might be the use of biometrics, which seems to be an emerging technology.

This study have been a challenge from the beginning since we knew that this is a very in-tense subject for the banks to discuss and therefore we have had to be persuasive in many cases and let the banks answer anonymously to be able to gather as much information as possible from our sample banks. Furthermore we have collected up to date articles and studies to be able to get as accurate information as possible.

The main findings we have discovered is the trade-off between security versus availability and flexibility and these factors were the same no matter what online access system, PDA or smart card, they have in use. But also that all the banks states that their authentication process is very safe and striving to become 100% secure, even though we have found new threats which is not of an authentication problem but a matter of transactional problem. The banks have shown through the interviews that they lack awareness of such a threat.

A Validation of an IT Investment Evaluation Model in Health and Social Care: A case study of ERAS Interactive Audit System (EIAS)2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The traditional IT investment evaluation methods and/or techniques tend to measure the quantitative value added by eHealth. However, there are contributions brought by innovation which are intangible and sundry, and thus are difficult to identify, measure and manage. A model presented by Vimarlund & Koch (2011) aims for identifying the benefits that IT investments bring to health and social care organizations. It could be used as a tool that identifies and classifies the effects and indicators of IT innovation in-vestments at different organizational levels for different stakeholders.

Purpose and research questions: This is an evaluative study with the purpose to validate Vimarlund & Koch’s (2011) evaluation model through practical application. A care study of EIAS (ERAS Interactive Audit System) is conducted. ERAS stands for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, which is an innovative process aims to enhance patient’s outcome after ma-jor surgery. EIAS is a system that supports the ERAS process. The aim is to achieve a deep understanding of IT investment evaluation. The model will be used in a real case as a guide to evaluate and identify impact that derives from the use and implementation of IT applica-tions. The process of evaluation could also be seen as a process of validation of the model in terms of comprehensiveness, practicality and applicability. Through this study, we aim to find out:

    1) What are the possible contributions that EIAS brings to Jönköping County Council?

    2) How is the performance of Vimarlund & Koch’s (2011) evaluation model in practical application, in terms of comprehensiveness, practicality and applicability?

Method: The purpose of this study is evaluative and it is conducted by using adductive ap-proach. Single case study will be adopted as the research strategy. In this study, qualitative data will be collected through semi-structured interview with key respondents. The data collected will be analyzed qualitatively with a narrative approach.

Conclusion: Guided by Vimarlund & Koch’s (2011) evaluation model, the innovations that have been brought into healthcare organizations by EARS are electronic information supply, internal integration of clinical information and possibilities to learn from the system. The model has been validated in terms of comprehensiveness, practicality and applicability. The evaluation model is a generic model to demonstrate the contribution of IT to innovation and change in health care. It could be used in both formative and summative assessment and as well as goal-free and goal-based evaluation. The issue of the productivity paradox has been noticed as some effects are not immediate after introducing of IT. User-participation or not could be considered as an important condition for the validity of the evaluation guided by the evaluation model.

Understanding the adoption of third-party online payment: An empirical study of user acceptance of Alipay in China2014Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

With the development of online shopping, the number of third-party online payment systems increases. Alipay is a commonly used third-party online payment system among Chinese consumers. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that affect the users’ acceptance of Alipay among Chinese B2C customers. This study adopts a deductive, theory testing approach. Based on the model of Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), a research model and hypotheses were proposed. A survey study was performed with a quota sample of 300 Chinese online shopping consumers. Based on the responses, the hypotheses were tested through statistical analysis. Through testing the hypotheses, it was concluded that: “Social Influence”, “Effort expectancy” were the factors that most prominently could affect B2C user’s acceptance of Alipay. Hence, third-party online systems suppliers should focus on social marketing and increasing the ease of use of the systems to increase user acceptance. Other similar third-party online payment company could take those identified factors as reference in further user acceptance study, and the proposed research model in this study could also help in improving understanding of user acceptance in similar third-part online payment system.

A Pragmatic Conception of Service Encounters2008Ingår i: The Inaugural meeting of The AIS Special Interest Group on Pragmatist IS Research (SIGPrag 2008) at International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS2008), www.sigprag.org , 2008, s. 43-48Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

A service encounter is conceived as an interactive process between a service provider and a service receiver. It has however largely been analyzed as a non-interactive phenomenon which lead to a superficial and incomplete understanding of the dynamics of service encounters as an interactive process. The purpose of this paper is to explore whether pragmatic concepts could form a foundation for the conception of service encounters as an interactive phenomenon. The results show that in order to capture the essence of interaction in service encounters from a pragmatic view researchers should turn to the concept of action. In order to avoid a one-side view (the customer or the company/company representative) of the service encounter the inter-related actions need to be taken into consideration.

    Abstract [en]

Pragmatism as theoretical foundation and research approach has been applied in different practical settings by a number of different scholars. One approach, addressing the need for considering different stakeholder's views associated with actions being performed, has been coined as co-design by Olov Forsgren. In this short paper we revisit some of the philosophical roots of co-design in an knowledge endeavour of regarding co-design as social constructive pragmatism. By doing that we try to strengthen the theoretical base for co-design as well as getting inspiration for new development of the co-design movement. Social constructive pragmatism is conceived as a social constructive process in which observations by inquirers are essential. The basic categories in co-design are the viewer often described as the actor, the viewing often described as the action and the target of the viewing, often described as the object. The meta-viewer is also an important part of co-design in viewing the whole scene of actors, actions and objects. In this paper a framework that relates co-design to an action cycle constituted by three steps (conditions, action, and result) as well as the notion of inquiry is presented.

Facilitating learning in SPI through co-design2005Ingår i: Advances in Information Systems Dvelopment: Briging the gap between Academia and Industry, 2005, s. 530-Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper elaborates on the need for an interactive relation between operative development and learning during SPI (Software Process Improvement) initiatives. The character of SPI projects and change work in general is that it often is problematic to develop and implement change measures that are accepted, useful, competitive, and really are improving the system development practice. There is a need to not just put focus on the production system, in this case the system development practice, which produces the artefact but also the learning process and how to facilitate learning during SPI initiatives. During 2003 and 2004 we have been involved in an action research project that focuses the development of inter-subjective knowledge, theories and methods in order to increase the ability and competitiveness at a consultancy firm. As a result of this study we do in this paper suggest an initial framework for how theories, methods, actors and cooperation procedures can be used to facilitate development work

Integrating Change Methods: framework and experiences from integrating two methods for change work1997Ingår i: IRIS20: Social Informatics, 1997, s. 884-Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

When developing businesses there is often a need to rely on instructions such as methods. Methods are among other things experiences from previous development work. Within an organisation there usually exists a variety of methods and method like work forms that different actors have experience of. When performing development work one intends to achieve certain result by using methods. Therefore, there is a need to ensure that the used method also harmonises with the goal for the change work. One way to create such a method is to perform method integration, where several methods can be used as candidates on different levels when forming the "new" method. The method parts can be treated so that they form a synthesis or just a concatenation in the "new" method. When performing such method integration three supplementary approaches can be usedwill be discussed: modeltheory, practice and internal based method integration. A fruitful way to create a well grounded integrated method is to let these three approaches interact with each other during the method integration process. This paper focuses on experiences from the application of these three supplementary approaches. The paper also treats the problem of reconstruction of tacit method knowledge.

Organisational Learning through Team-Based Reconstruction: Going from Individual Knowledge to Shared Contextual Knowledge2000Ingår i: OR in the 21st Century: Communications & Knowledge Management, 2000Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Organisations can be interpreted as a collection of actors who produce value for clients.

In order for organisations to stay competitive there is a need for organisations to

continuously develop their ability. An organisation’s ability is determined by its ability to

effectively apply existing knowledge to create new knowledge and to take action that

form the basis for achieving competitive advantage from knowledge-based assets. One

mean for developing the organisational ability is to establish a mutually accepted

understanding of the context in which the actors are acting. One important part of the

organisation’s knowledge creation processes is to facilitate the sharing of personal

knowledge. A condition for developing the organisational ability is to expand the amount

of shared knowledge to an appropriate level. One type of knowledge that needs to be

shared among different actors within the organisation is the knowledge about how and in

which order actions are performed (contextual knowledge) in order to satisfy client

needs. In this paper an approach for team-based reconstruction, used for going from

personal to shared contextual knowledge, is presented. The approach bears on the

foundation of theories about knowledge management for understanding the process of

externalisation and theories about language action for understanding organisations.

Experiences from three case studies are presented. Team-based reconstruction can be

used for 1) going from personal knowledge to shared contextual knowledge in an

efficient way, 2) arriving at a foundation for efficient organisational co-ordination, 3)

arriving at a base for development work, as well as 4) organisational learning.

Value Realization in ERP Projects2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In modern society, organizations are fighting each other through various means and tools in an ever-changing market at an increasing pace. One such tool is the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System which aims to collect the necessary applications an organization need into one system. Although the ERP solution has become more mature over the years, researchers suggest that value gained from them have become progressively difficult to iso-late, difficult to measure and challenging to realize. It was therefore in the interest of the authors to investigate the domain of value realization in ERP projects.

To complete such a study we selected an inductive approach, focusing on acquiring and us-ing qualitative data and through the practice of behavioral science and design science con-tribute to existing theories. By studying existing theories and models in topics such as change management, enterprise resource planning & critical success factors and benefit management, we supported our primary data gathering and finally our the creation of our artifact. The result from this study points to a number of important components that are needed to realize value in an ERP project. These identified components include a clear structure in the project, commitment from the clients, and communication to name a few. There were also challenges with realizing value, some of them dealing with change man-agement and the difficulty in finding appropriate measures. Even client commitment proved to be a challenge for realizing value.

Proactive methods against illegal downloading: A study within the music industry2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the proactive methods against illegal downloading. This study will look into the new implemented IPRED law that could be seen as one attempt to prevent the illegal downloading. Furthermore, this study investigates how new services such as Spotify can be a legal alternative to the illegal downloading and also how the music industry has handled the transition from CD sales to the new digital media.

Our research consists of both qualitative and quantitative study where a survey has been conducted among 50 people in Jönköping University. The study also consists of two interviews from experts within the field which gave the study more credibility.

We discovered through our research that the music industry has been going through four different phases and that the actual state the music industry is that they have started to accept the technology and adjust their business to it. We have also discovered through our survey that the IPRED law has had an impact in the fight against illegal downloading. The winner is Spotify that most users have turned to when the IPRED law was introduced.

    Abstract [sv]

Competitive IS/IT strategy: A qualitative study about IS/IT strategy and its influence on business strategy in small service enterprises2006Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats
    Abstract [sv]

Mapping an ambient assisted living service as a seamful cross-channel ecosystem2019Ingår i: Service design and service thinking in healthcare and hospital management: Theory, concepts, practice / [ed] M. Pfannstiel & C. Rasche, Cham: Springer, 2019, s. 289-314Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter we detail a spatial method to map cross-channel ecosystems based on systems thinking and the framing of cross-channel ecosystems as defined in information architecture. The spatial mapping tool is applied on a specific case in the ambient assisted living domain with the goal of exploring how such an approach might further the current understanding of service journeys and their connection to environmental, organizational, and actor-related aspects represented through information flows. Specifically, we discuss how organizations and care institutions could use such an approach to better understand the larger ecosystems in which they are to act in the future. Findings include the strategic role that seams present in the ecosystem map where a thorough design of seams allows to capture possible logical fallacies plaguing the ecosystem. Additionally, seams allow an organization to understand what part of the ecosystem they have influence over and when actors make the organization’s touchpoints an integral part of the activities they intend to perform. Specifically for the services mapped in this chapter, the ecosystem map shows the interplay between tablet and the oven and hob and to which users adhered to the most during service processes.

Guidance Through Use: Value as a Pathfinder in e-Health Services Implementation2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The lack of awareness and confidence in eHealth solutions among certain stakeholders creates a barrier for the implementation of e-Health services. The aim of this paper is to explore issues that promote the development and implementation of patient-centered care services for the elderly. An exploratory case study approach is applied to a e-Health monitoring service that was developed and piloted in 38 homes for the elderly in Sweden and the Netherlands. The unit of analysis, concept of 'value-in-use', was used in order to determine how pilot participants felt about a service of this kind benefiting them the most. The findings were then translated into actionable considerations for implementing organizations. The results indicate a need for active participation, technical support infrastructure, mobility demands, and an extension of the concept of trust in e-Health services. The knowledge presented in the study is important for decisions makers, public organization strategists, and policy writers.

    Abstract [en]

This paper uses a qualitative approach, specifically; narrative analysis, to contextualize user's formulation of an understanding of a personalized meal planning service within the ambient assisted living domain. By focusing on how user's, in this case elderly over 65, formed an understanding of a service, and, what they thought valuable in using the service, based on their understanding. The results indicate how user's compare their initial understanding to their experienced understanding, formed during usage, and how this affects their value formulation of specific service aspects. The paper gives not only provides valuable insight into contextualizing aspects of health and wellness services, but to aspects of importance for implementation, by showing how value aspects of services from a user perspective are important to consider during these processes.

    Multi-Contextuality in Boundary Spanning Practices2008Ingår i: Information Systems Journal, ISSN 1350-1917, E-ISSN 1365-2575, Vol. 18, nr 6, s. 641-661Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The capability to establish boundary spanning practices within and across organizations has for long been recognized as a key strategic resource. As organizations are becoming distributed and dynamic, they will be increasingly populated by multiple functional, geographical, hierarchical, and professional boundaries. The inherent complexity of such settings makes it difficult for organizations to leverage their boundary spanning practices. IT systems have been hailed as a critical enabler of boundary spanning. However, there is little knowledge on how organizations are affected by the introduction of different types of IT systems. Building on an interpretive case study of Swedish transport organizations, this paper explores consequences of sensor technology for boundary spanning. The paper contributes with an understanding of what co-existing use contexts mean for boundary spanning practices. A theoretical implication is that such multi-contextuality requires an integrative view on boundary spanning that combines insights from the organizational innovation and work practice literatures.

The impact of national culture on e-learning implementation: A comparative study of an Argentinean and a Swedish university2008Ingår i: Proceedings of IADIS International Conference Information Systems 2008, 2008, s. 351-Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Currently, little is known if and how national culture shapes e-learning. In this study, attitudes, purposes, driving factors and barriers of e-learning use at an Argentinean and a Swedish university was compared. A survey questionnaire was distributed among teachers at both universities. Data was analysed to discern similarities and differences in responses from Argentinean and Swedish teachers from the four cultural dimensions developed by Hofstede; power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism – collectivism, and masculinity – femininity. The main conclusion of the study was that the similarities of responses from Swedish and Argentinean teachers were more common than differences. However, some differences emanating from national culture could be discerned. Argentinean teachers stated communication with students and active student participation as more important driving factors than Swedish teachers. Lack of incentives and appreciation was stated as more important barriers among the Argentinean teachers. These findings are hypothesised to be due to the more collectivist and masculine culture of Argentina.

Reorganization of Software Application Hosting and Its Relation to e-Government: A Swedish Municipality Case2009Ingår i: Journal of Cases on Information Technology, ISSN 1548-7717, E-ISSN 1548-7725, Vol. 11, nr 3, s. 62-80Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the case of a decision-making process in a Swedish local government which was reorganizing the hosting of its software applications. One question raised is, how the attempt of improving governance and being more of an e-government, influences a hosting decision. To illustrate this, a retrospective case study is used. The case shows why the decision-making process started, how the decisions were taken, and finally the outcomes from that process.

It seems from our findings, that organizations planning to decentralize decision-making in order to make better decisions need to centralize parts of the IS work. Another outcome of the centralization may also be an increased ability of being an e-Government. The paper suggests a number of reasons for why an organization starts the process of reorganizing its software applications hosting and how these reasons are connected to e-Government. It is found that this reorganization in particular aims at improving the governance that the executive committee needs in order to make the correct decisions. This is in line with the government’s ambition to become more of an e-Government and in that way be able to provide better services for its citizens. However, the question remains if the decided option, to centralize and coordinate software applications hosting and ICT, was the best option or if another outcome would be preferable.

E-learning use at Jönköping University: Driving factors, barriers and strategies2007Övrigt (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Universities world-wide develop e-learning courses, but do  not always have a clear understanding what is needed to develop such courses. Before a university implements e-learning courses, the driving and limiting factors should be explored. To this end we conducted a survey at Jönköping University in Sweden. Every staff member at the university who had devoted at least 10% or her/his time to teaching during the last year was asked to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire was answered by 159 teachers. The driving factors of using e-learning were found to be primarliy administrative gains, and not so much improvement of the pedagogical value of courses. The two major barriers to e-learning were lack of time (65%) and lack of knowledge about technology (53%). The teachers experienced limited support from the university management in their ambitions to develop e-learning.

E-democracy and E-participation in Practice: pitfalls and success factors2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article describes the development and use of e-democracy in a housing area in a Swedish municipality over more than a five-year period. The impact of the on-going dialogue between selectors and selected representatives using socio-technical ICT-artifact is studied in particular.

The perspectives of this research are threefold:

    - How should (i) social, (ii) pedagogical and (iii) technical components be organized to develop, uphold or vitalize a social and learning context with ICT-supported dialogue and discussion between ordinary participants/members and their representatives?

The findings of this article mainly consist of pitfalls and success factors which may influence the development and use of e-democracy on a medium sized societal level.

Two important preconditions for a successful development are that the whole implementation (democratization) process is well known for the involved parties, and that there is a contract established that regulates the actions of the key actors and other participants.
