    Abstract [en]

    Current approaches for enterprise architecture lack analytical instruments for cyclic evaluations of business and system architectures in real business enterprise system environments. They are primarily model-driven and follow a top-down approach. Enterprise architecture uses semi-formal model created manually. In practice the resulting high effort often impedes the broad use of enterprise architecture methodologies. Furthermore, even if an architecture model is created in this way, the permanent evolution of systems desynchronizes quickly model representation and reality. Therefore we are introducing an approach for complementing the existing top-down approach for the creation of enterprise architecture with a bottom approach. Enterprise Architecture Analytics uses the architectural information contained in many infrastructures to provide architectural information. By applying Big Data technologies it is possible to exploit this information and to create architectural information. That means, Enterprise Architectures may be discovered, analyzed and optimized using analytics. Furthermore the compliance of Enterprise Architectures may be verified. Architectural decisions are linked to clustered architecture artifacts and categories according to a holistic EAM Reference Architecture with specific architecture metamodels. A special suited EAM Maturity Framework provides the base for systematic and analytics supported assessments of architecture capabilities.

    Abstract [en]

    Cyber-physical networks open new possibilities to supply chain configuration. They are based on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), which tightly integrate physical systems and cyber (IT) systems based on interaction between these systems in real time. Operation and configuration of CPS require approaches for managing the variability at design time and the dynamics at runtime caused by a multitude of component types and changing application environments. The proposed approach benefits from integration of such technologies as multilevel self-organisation and knowledge fusion. Self-organisation within cyber-physical networks opens the avenue towards providing new services at runtime, which need to be accommodated in the business models. Adaptable business models are a promising approach to this challenge.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper addresses the problem of product knowledge management in virtual enterprises. The proposed approach is based on the idea of representing virtual enterprise members via services provided by them. This makes it possible to abstract from real virtual enterprise members and to deal with a Web service network instead. The C3S3P (Concept Study, Scaffolding, Scoping, and Requirements Modelling) methodology is used for product knowledge modeling. These best practices were represented as active knowledge models. Capturing organisational knowledge is facilitated via usage of the concept of task patterns based on the industrial case taken from product development in automotive supplier industries. Since the evaluation was of just one year and included only four industrial companies from two different domains, future work is planned to include a comparison between different industries and also include experiences from a larger number of task pattern developments.

    In many industrial sectors, business networks emerged as collaborative partnerships for tackling challenges caused by globalization and changing market needs. These networks are bundling competence and knowledge of different partners for co-operations in development or manufacturing projects. In such networks and collaborations, management of knowledge, competences and capacities at the different network members is crucial. This paper investigates requirements and challenges to knowledge management for business networks and argues that context-orientation is a key feature of modern approaches. The focus on our work is on decision support.

    Abstract [en]

    Operation and configuration of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) require approaches for managing the variability at design time and the dynamics at runtime caused by a multitude of component types and changing application environments. As a contribution to this area, this paper proposes to integrate concepts for variability management with approaches for self-organization in intelligent systems. Our approach exploits the idea of self-contextualization to autonomously adapt behaviors of multiple services to the current situation. More concrete, we put the “context” of CPS into the conceptual focus of our approach and propose context variants for use in self-contextualization of CPS. The main contributions of this paper are to identify challenges in variability management of CPS based on an industrial case, the integration of context variants into the reference model for selfcontextualizing services and an initial validation using a case study

    Organizations experience today an increasing amount of information, which leads to a perceived information overload. This information overload is the cause for more and more wrong decisions and has therefore economic consequences. Especially decision-makers and knowledge intensive workers are affected. They often work in teams with several persons who have to share information relevant for their tasks. Information demand patterns have been suggested as a possibility to reduce the information overload in organizations. Such patterns offer the possibility to reuse knowledge about information demands of a role. This work is guided by the question how the concept of information demand pattern for individual roles can be applied to a team. The contributions of this work are (1) a description of the structure of information demand patterns for teams; (2) a presentation of the correlation between information demand pattern for individuals and teams and (3) a team pattern definition.

    Lehr-Lern-Portale können eingesetzt werden, um Lernende durch das Bereitstellen von relevanten Informationen an einem zentralen Ort sinnvoll zu unterstützen. Es stellt sich jedoch schnell die Frage, wie der intuitiv erwartete Mehrwert bezüglich des Nutzens eines solchen Portals objektiv gemessen werden kann? Ansätze zur Qualitätsbewertung von Software fokussieren sich häufig auf einzelne Teilaspekte wie den wahrgenommenen Nutzen. Diese Arbeit präsentiert als ganzheitlichen Ansatz zur Nutzenbewertung eines Lehr-Lern-Portals eine angepasste Balanced-Scorecard am Beispiel des Portals „myKosmos“. Diese Arbeit entstand im Rahmen des Projekts KOSMOS, das darauf abzielt, ein Konzept für das Lebenslange Lernen an Hochschulen zu entwickeln, um traditionellen und nicht-traditionellen Zielgruppen individuell angepasste Studienmöglichkeiten auf universitärem Niveau anzubieten.

    Modern organizations face the challenge of having to manage an increasing amount of information. The resulting information overload leads more and more to problems in decision making with potentially negative economic consequences. Decision-makers and knowledge intensive workers are especially affected. To address this problem, information demand patterns were proposed which capture organizational knowledge about the information demand of single roles. This work extends the concept of information demand patterns from single roles to teams. Using the knowledge intensive field of project management, the paper shows how to apply the concept of information demand patterns for a whole team. The contributions of this work are (1) the methodical approach to develop information demand patterns for teams, (2) an actual information demand pattern for a steering committee in the context of project management, (3) reflections on the differences between role patterns and team patterns.

    Abstract [en]

    The term ‘framework’ appears very often in scientific publications like journals and conferences. However, there is no universal definition of a framework. It seems that the term is not used in a consistent way by authors publishing on frameworks since they have very little in common compared to each other. The goal of this work is to analyse and show how frameworks in the fields of information systems are handled in the scientific literature over the past 10 years as well as giving a universal definition of the term ‘framework’ based on the relevant studies. The systematic literature review will serve to identify those studies and to categorize the identified frameworks. The contributions of this work are (1) a general overview about frameworks in the past 10 years, (2) a proposed categorization of frameworks and (3) a general definition of the term ‘framework’.

    Enterprise Modelling (EM) is an activity where an integrated model describing different aspects of an enterprise is created. An enterprise model consists of a number of related “sub-models” or perspectives, each describing the enterprise from a particular view, for example, processes, business rules, goals, actors, and concepts/information/data. The purpose of using EM in the context of capability management is to capture and document the existing organizational design. The overall vision of capability management approaches, such as Capability-Driven Development (CDD), is to use (and update if necessary) the enterprise models that the organization already has for capability design. However, if an organization does not have existing models or their use is deemed impractical (e.g., they are severely out of date or the quality of models is below acceptable), new models need to be created. The chapter gives an introduction to the topic of Enterprise Modelling, including perspectives captured in enterprise models, a typical modelling process, and existing modelling methods.

    When manufacturers, distributors and dealers need to collaborate, they form production networks because this provides significant advantages in production variety, flexibility and lead time. Production processes in such networks often spawn different specific tasks that are to be solved by the network members. This requires creation of a team able to tackle the identified problem. When dealing with multiple organizations and multiple processes within a complicated production network, trying to find a member that has required competence can be a laborious, time-consuming process. Developing and main-taining competence profiles of all the relevant parties associated with produc-tion can significantly reduce the time. The paper proposes an approach to team configuration based on competence profiles. The approach utilizes such tech-nologies as ontology management, context management and profiling. Using ontological representation makes it possible to identify those team members who are best suited for the task by ontology matching.

    Customer-motivated changes in network organizations lead to alignment of business and IT-infrastructure. This paper investigates the use of competence models in network organizations for more efficient alignment of IT-infrastructure to changed business demands. The paper shows that a competence model is pertinent in a process of aligning an IT-infrastructure to changed business demands. Then, a way is presented of extracting alignment needs from competence information in enterprise models. Finally, our approach for competence profile management is extended with alignment operations. These operations together with other operations on competence profiles form a lifecycle model for competence profile management. Such operationalization allows for support of aligning network organizations to changing business demands.

    Awareness of competence and structured competence representations are important elements in different business scenarios such as a company looking for a partner with expertise in a certain industrial sector or new staff member with particular skills. This paper presents the use of ontologies to formally represent competence models describing individual and enterprise competences. The individual competences model includes the three major parts: general competence, cultural competence, and occupational competence. The enterprise competences model consists of two parts: industrial competence and occupational competence. The competence models are defined with a meta-model, the latter being an ontology language. Particular individuals and enterprises are described with competence profiles, which are instances of the models. During a pilot study, five individual competence profiles and four enterprise competence profiles were built. The approach to competence modeling has proved to be able to capture capabilities of individuals with diverse occupational and educational backgrounds. Furthermore, the competence modeling approach proved to be suitable for enterprise competences in different countries due to use of international standard classifications as a basis of the models.

    Collaborative design in dispersed groups of engineers creates various kinds of challenges to technology, organization and social environment. Selected examples are knowledge sharing, coordination support or secure tool integration (Jacucci, Pawlak, & Sandkuhl, 2005). Work presented in this chapter is located in the area of formation of teams for collaborative design. The challenge addressed is how to describe and represent the competences needed for a planned collaborative design project in a way that those individuals best suited for the collaboration can be identified. The proposed approach is to apply ontology engineering to modeling competences of individuals, including different competence areas like cultural competences, professional competences or occupational competences.

    Collaborative design in dispersed groups of engineers creates various kinds of challenges to technology, organization and social environment. This paper presents an approach to description and representation of the competences needed for a planned collaborative design project. The most important competence areas are identified starting from the nature of design work, problem solving in design teams, and working in distributed groups. The competence model is built structuring these areas according to three perspectives: general, cultural, and occupational competences. An ontological representation is proposed to implement the described model for collaborative design competence. Using an ontology language for representation of collaborative design competence models makes it possible to identify those individuals who are best suited for the collaboration by ontology matching. Furthermore, a software design team consisting of two persons was interviewed and competence profiles were created using the developed ontological representation. Modeling of the team members has confirmed that the proposed approach can be applied to modeling competences needed for collaborative design in engineering fields.

    Knowledge-based systems are used extensively to support functioning of enterprises. Such systems need to reflect the aligned business-IT view and create shared understanding of the domain. Ontologies are used as part of many knowledge-bases systems. The industrial context affects the process of ontology engineering in terms of business requirements and technical constraints. This paper presents a study of four industrial cases that included ontology development. The study resulted in identification of seven factors that were used to compare the industrial cases. The most influential factors were found to be reuse of ontologies/models, stakeholder groups involved, and level of applicability of ontology. Finally, four recommendation were formulated for projects intended to create shared understanding in an enterprise.

    In the last decades, numerous developments and legal changes moved the utility industry towards a liberalized market. Utility enterprises have to stay competitive and reduce costs while managing more complex IT systems. The authors of this work see special demand for aligning business and IT for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in this industry and identify the development of a reference enterprise architecture (R-EA) as a key for this issue. This work investigates how to develop such a reference model, which comprises data acquisition as well as validation methods.

    In most economic sectors organizations face rapid environmental changes like regulations. Such changes can force them to adjust both their organizational and operational structure. For instance, in the energy utility sector numerous developments moved German Public Utilities (PUs) towards a liberalized market. Nowadays PUs have to stay competitive while managing a heterogeneous information technology (IT) landscape. We address this demand for aligning business and IT by combining the holistic perspective of Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) with the characteristic of reference modeling to reuse knowledge in a problem domain. Therefore, we utilize configurative reference modeling within Design Science Research (DSR). The artefact at hand is a method for developing a Reference Enterprise Architecture (R-EA), which is applied in the problem domain of PUs. Our contributions are the (i) adaptation of Configurative Reference Modelling (CRM) to develop a R-EA and (ii) a procedure how to elicit knowledge for R-EA development method.

    Abstract [en]

    During the last 20 years, much research work has been spent on determining which notation is the “best” one for business process modelling in industrial practice. However, most of this work has been performed outside the actual application context, i.e. often in labs, academic environments or experimental settings. We aim at contributing to the field by presenting and discussing a case of selecting the notation for a complete organization. More concrete, the paper covers the process of making a decision which notation is the most appropriate one for a medium-sized organization from utility industries. The steps taken in this decision making process include the analysis of requirements originating from regulation in the domain, a survey among the future users of the notation, and the analysis and evaluation of organizational requirements. The main contributions of this paper are (1) a real-world example illustrating issues and challenges when deciding on the “right” process modeling notation including influences from the application domain, (2) a survey comparing the understandability of notations from the end user perspective and (3) lessons learned from the decision making process and the survey.
