The experience of attempting to return to work following spinal cord injury: a systematic review of the qualitative literature.2018In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 40, no 15, p. 1745-1753Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

PURPOSE: This review sought to answer the question "What are the barriers and facilitators influencing people's experience of return to work following spinal cord injury?"

METHODS: Studies that met the selection criteria were identified, presented and critically appraised using National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines. Thematic synthesis was completed with studies possessing strong methodological rigor. Synthesis and interpretation involved three stages; coding of primary data; development of descriptive themes reflective of the primary data; and establishment of analytical themes to answer the review question.

RESULTS: Data from nine papers were included in the thematic synthesis. Several descriptive themes and three analytical themes were drawn from the data to answer the research question. Analytical themes included: a matrix of personal and environmental factors exists requiring complex navigation in order to create possibilities and opportunities for postinjury employment; the process of seeking or gaining employment shares a reciprocal relationship with the temporal nature of adjustment to spinal cord injury; and there is an intrinsic need for occupational engagement through paid employment.

CONCLUSIONS: Returning to or gaining employment after spinal cord injury is a fundamentally difficult experience for people. Multiple strategies are required to support the navigation of the process. There is, however, a need in people with spinal cord injury, to be a worker, and with that comes the inherent benefits of being employed. Implications for rehabilitation Returning to work should be a significant focus of spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Employment is both possible and health promoting following spinal cord injury. Multiple strategies are required to support people to navigate the return to work process. It is important to be cognizant of the individual motivations for being a worker and the complexity of the adjustment process. Spinal cord injury centers can provide a consistent and supportive framework and culture of positivity about employment after spinal cord injury.

The experience of seeking, gaining and maintaining employment after traumatic spinal cord injury and the vocational pathways involved.2018In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assessment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 59, no 1, p. 67-84Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Vocational potential in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) are unrealised with rates of employment substantially lower than in the labour force participation of the general population and the pre-injury employment rates.

OBJECTIVES: To understand the experience and pathway of people achieving employment outcome after traumatic spinal cord injury by; classifying participants into employment outcome groups of stable, unstable and without employment; identifying pre and post-injury pathways for participants in each group and, exploring the experiences of people of seeking, gaining and maintaining employment.

METHODS: Thirty-one participants were interviewed. Mixed methods approach including interpretive phenomenological analysis and vocational pathway mapping of quantitative data.

RESULTS: The most common pathway identified was from study and work pre-injury to stable employment post-injury. Four super-ordinate themes were identified from the interpretive phenomenological analysis; expectations of work, system impacts, worker identity and social supports. Implications for clinical practice include fostering cultural change, strategies for system navigation, promotion of worker identity and optimal use of social supports.

CONCLUSIONS: The findings increase insight and understanding of the complex experience of employment after spinal cord injury. There is opportunity to guide experimental research, policy development and education concerning the complexity of the return to work experience and factors that influence pathways.

The assertion of female managers facing male leadership: A comparative study between the banking, consulting and agri-food industries in France.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Women in senior positions have been, for a long time, discredited. We wanted to study their current situation and understand how they assert themselves in their companies. We thought it would be interesting to see their link to management and leadership.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand the position of female managers in organizations through the exploration of gender roles, characteristics and stereotypes.

Method: We conducted our research by reviewing literature about leadership theories, management versus leadership and gender influences over leadership. Then, we conducted a qualitative study with a comparison analysis between the banking, consulting and agri-food industries in France to update the current knowledge regarding female managers, to understand how they assert themselves.

Conclusion: The results suggest that it is still hard for women to assert themselves and reach manager or leader positions. However, this is mostly due to their own perceptions of themselves. Women tend to lack self-confidence, which is unfortunate because female managers generally use a transformational leadership style which is considered as one of the best, which means they have all the keys to become both successful managers and leaders, using androgynous characteristics. They also endure the maternity leave and tend to sacrifice their professional career for the benefit of their family life. Women simply need to be more confident and keep asserting themselves.

A Note on a commonly used ridge regression Monte Carlo design2014In: Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, ISSN 0361-0926, E-ISSN 1532-415X, Vol. 44, no 10, p. 2176-2179Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ridge estimators are usually examined through Monte Carlo simulations since their properties are difficult to obtain analytically. In this paper we argue that a simulation design commonly used in the literature will give biased results of Monte Carlo simulations in favour of ridge regression over ordinary least square (OLS) estimators. Specifically, it is argued that the properties of ridge estimators that are functions of p distinct regressor eigenvalues should not be evaluated through Monte Carlo designs using only two distinct eigenvalues.

    Abstract [en]

According to the convention on the Rights of the Child, every child has the right to freely express his or her opinion. The society has a responsibility to include young people’s participation, hence listen to their opinions and ideas. Nevertheless, it is difficult to implement young people’s participation in practice as children are sometimes viewed as objects in need of protection and viewed by others as independent actors. Adults behavior affects the opportunities to participate and is therefore important to acknowledge. This essay is grounded in previous studies which have observed a need for further research on young people’s own perspective on participation. Consequently, the purpose was to examine youth’s perspective on partic-ipation in matters that concern them, just like article 12 claims. Four research questions have been answered. The first one concerns the youths point of views of participation, the second one their interest in matters revolving around youths in society and the third one concerns what prerequisites the youth’s need to be able and willing to participate. The fourth research question was to what extent young people want to influence issues that concern them. It was answered based on the results of the first and the third questions and is presented in the analysis. The questions have been studied within the case of Jönköping. Data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews with eight participants. With a phenomenographic method the collected data was analyzed. In addition, the data was linked to levels of children’s participation though Hart’s Ladder of Participation which gave the results an order of precedence along with analytical depth and developed a theory. In summary, the findings conclude: the adolescents had experienced that adults often show a degrading attitude towards youth; there is a great interest in questions involving their schools; partic-ipation is important to youth and is every individual’s right; and finally, societal participation needs to be further developed to become known and accessible for youth. It was further categorized into three different ideal types: the indifferent, the reformers and the revolutionary. The analytical constructions should not be viewed as complete and representative for all youths. Rather the result of this study should facilitate an understanding of the many dynamics of adolescents’ participation in society.

A comprehensive conceptual framework for road safety strategies2016In: Accident Analysis and Prevention, ISSN 0001-4575, E-ISSN 1879-2057, Vol. 90, p. 13-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Road safety strategies (generally called Strategic Highway Safety Plans in the USA) provide essential guidance for actions to improve road safety, but often lack a conceptual framework that is comprehensive, systems theory based, and underpinned by evidence from research and practice. This paper aims to incorporate all components, policy tools by which they are changed, and the general interactions between them. A framework of nine mutually interacting components that contribute to crashes and ten generic policy tools which can be applied to reduce the outcomes of these crashes was developed and used to assess 58 road safety strategies from 22 countries across 15 years. The work identifies the policy tools that are most and least widely applied to components, highlighting the potential for improvements to any individual road safety strategy, and the potential strengths and weaknesses of road safety strategies in general. The framework also provides guidance for the development of new road safety strategies, identifying potential consequences of policy tool based measures with regard to exposure and risk, useful for both mobility and safety objectives.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine and explore the social, economic and ecological effects of hosting sports events. It will focus on the FIFA world cup 2014 and its effects on its host nation, Brazil. The study will explore the underlying factors behind the sports-event and whether the world cup has contributed or hindered the development of Brazils sustainable development. It seeks to understand the environmental impact of reconstructing infrastructure and implementation of arenas. The FIFA world cup is the highest viewed sports spectacle that connects football fans all over the world. It is strongly linked with joy, pride and entertainment that also holds cultural significance. In contrast, the preparation for hosting the world cup includes reconstructions of the city’s infrastructure. These redevelopment projects consisted of forced evictions, disposing of people, ostracization and further marginalization of people, cheap labor, demolishing buildings of historical and cultural value. Violations of human rights took place in order to host the event. It also diverted state funds from the education and health sector which were invested in building grandiose arenas. The result highlights the advantages and disadvantages of hosting the world cup. It will discover its effects on the country’s economy, whether it profits from hosting such an event.

Hållbarhetsarbete inom svensk besöksnäring: En kvalitativ studie om hur svenska turistdestinationer på landsbygden arbetar mot hållbar utveckling i relation till Agenda 20302019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Summary The armed conflict between the Kurdish PKK guerilla and the Turkish state has continued with varying intensity since the early 1980s, causing tens of thousands of casualties and displacing large numbers of civilians in South Eastern Turkey. However, the social and political tensions, relating to, for example, economic justice and recognition of the Kurdish ethnic and cultural identity have troubled the Turkish state since its creation after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Although an increasing number of studies that has been written describing and analyzing these tensions, a review of the early literature shows that few of the early works focused on how women have experienced them. The interest in the subject was created by my Turkish background. I was born and raised in a country where Turks are highly discriminated against by most of the country’s majority. I feel the sense of discrimination and isolation, and therefore I decided to write about the TurkishKurdish conflict from gender perspective. The focus is on the feelings and experiences of Kurdish women in the Turkish-Kurdish conflict that has been continuing in Turkey for a long time. This study seeks to analyze how Kurdish women perceive and experience the social, economic, and political tensions in the shadow of the raging civil war between the PKK and the Turkish state. It first focuses on identifying sources of conflict related stress that are specific to women, and then analyzes the strategies that Kurdish women use to deal with this stress as women. The empirical material consists of focus groups interviews conducted in the spring of 2017 in Istanbul, Ankara, and Diyarbakir with a total of 35 women. The study's findings show that Kurdish women face daily discrimination and oppression directed directly against them, while at the same time experiencing all these negative phenomena through their family members as well. They must keep silent about their feelings, fears, experiences, needs and sorrows to keep their family alive.

Occupation and basic income through the lens of Arendt’s vita activa2020In: Journal of Occupational Science, ISSN 1442-7591, E-ISSN 2158-1576, Vol. 27, no 1, p. 125-137Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is a debate about the meaning and importance of paid work for individuals as well as for society. On the one hand, paid work is considered the only way to secure general welfare. On the other hand, the Jobs Strategy urged by the OECD as the only possible model for achieving welfare is questioned and challenged through the idea of basic income. While basic income is frequently discussed within other disciplines, it is scarcely raised within occupational science, despite its obvious relevance. In this article, the significance of paid work and the possible consequences of introducing basic income are raised. Paid work may have healthy effects, but for many people worldwide dependence on paid work for basic security implies unhealthy, hazardous, and unsecure circumstances. Basic income may have a substantial impact on people’s occupational patterns as well as their experiences of occupational meaning. Three underlying rationales for introducing basic income can be traced: i) abolish a bureaucratic payment transfer system and maintain consumption, ii) diminish poverty and enhance a self-determined life, and iii) deepen democratization. These three rationales are discussed through the lens of Arendt’s vita activa: labor, work and action. Rationales underlying claims for basic income have substantially different underlying ideologies and are therefore important to scrutinize. Rationales mainly building on maintaining consumption imply a risk that people are reduced to homo consumens and denizens. Developing all modalities creates opportunities for occupational justice as well as inclusion and citizenship.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines what support services are offered to informal caregivers and whether the support is aimed directly or indirectly at the caters. Data were collected by means of two mail questionnaires in a Swedish county. The first questionnaire was aimed at each municipality in the region. The second questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 284 voluntary organizations in the region. Only the municipalities proved to have relief services, day care centers and two forms of payment for carers. The voluntary organizations' support for carers was focused on support groups and training as well as services for elderly care recipients. The results indicated that the support services for carers were both direct and indirect and that the municipalities and the voluntary organizations largely offer different kinds of support.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the support services offered to informal caregivers, whether directly or indirectly, in Sweden over the period of a special investment initiative between 1999 and 2001. Data were collected in a Swedish county using two separate mail questionnaires in 1999 and 2001. The first questionnaire was addressed to each municipality in the region. The second questionnaire was sent to a random sample of voluntary organizations in the area. The findings showed that only the municipalities provided direct forms of relief service, day care and financial support. The voluntary organizations’ support for carers focused on support groups and training as well as services for older care users themselves. There was a significant increase between 1999 and 2001 in the number of municipalities providing information material and training for carers and using professional caregiver consultants. On the one hand, the Swedish public social care system appears to be following the international pattern in paying more attention to informal caregivers and investing in support services for them. On the other hand the findings did not show any growth in support provided by the voluntary organizations. Here Swedish welfare is dissimilar to other European countries, where it is increasingly common for voluntary organizations to play an important role as providers of support for carers.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the role of older people in Swedish society by exploring the prevalence of their informal caregiving and volunteering and by analyzing the profiles of these contributors of unpaid work. Data were collected by means of telephone interviews in a Swedish representative survey conducted in 2005. Our analysis reveals three distinct profiles of people involved in unpaid activities. One of these consists of those involved both in informal helpgiving and volunteering, a group that has been labeled “super helpers” or “doers” in earlier research. It is important for social policy planners to recognize these groups of older people and better understand the dynamics of their unpaid work in order to ascertain whether they might need support as providers and to enhance their well-being. There does not seem to be any simple contradiction between the parallel existence of a universal welfare model of the Swedish kind and an extensive civil society in which older people play important roles as active citizens.

    Abstract [en]

This article reports on an analysis of informal help and caregiving in Sweden with, for the first time, a focus on patterns of change over 17 years regarding scope, type of caregivers and the recipients of help. The discussion is based on results from a national survey repeated four times between 1992 and 2009. In the 1990s, the figures were stable, but from the late 1990s to 2009, there seems to have been a dramatic increase in the extent of informal help giving. Concerning types of helpers, the patterns implied involvement not only from family members, but also from other types of helpers. Two interpretative perspectives were used in the analysis: the first from recent welfare state changes and the substitution argument; the second from the present debate on civil society and its possible and changing role. These perspectives represent two partly complementary approaches to the understanding of the dynamics of informal involvement in contemporary Swedish society.

    Abstract [en]

This article analyses informal caregiving and volunteering in organizations over 17 years in Sweden, with a focus on links between these two forms of unpaid activities. The discussion is based on results from a national survey that was repeated four times in the period 1992–2009. Links were found between the different types of activities. In all four studies a substantial group of the population was involved both in informal caregiving and volunteering. This group of ‘active citizens’ are commonly also engaged in informal social networks. This ‘double active’ group had increased over time and they provide a substantial amount of hours of involvement. Patterns outlined in this article demonstrate that unpaid activities represent a multifaceted phenomenon, and that the boundaries between informal caregiving and volunteering as forms of engagement may be more fluid than has previously been acknowledged. The results challenge the literature in which informal caregiving is viewed as a major obstacle to volunteering. At the same time, however, informal caregiving in general was found to be increasing. There might be reasons to be cautious about the possible risk that too much pressure on citizens for informal caregiving might jeopardize the type of double involvement that is outlined in this article.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this pilot study was to examine whether the use of the Occupational Adaptation Model increases independence and experienced health for disabled elderly in home rehabilitation in primary care. The study had an integrated design, in which the data were collected through a quasi-experimental plan in combination with semi-structured interviews with disabled elderly. The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results indicated that the use of the model increases experienced health and gives the occupational therapist a tool for helping the disabled elderly to understand and engage themselves in their life situations.

    Abstract [sv]

The overall aim of this study is to investigate and analyze the child welfare workers’ experiences of working within the public welfare agencies and to gain an insight into how they experience and how they are affected by obstacles and opportunities in their work environment. The study is based on a qualitative methodological approach and consists of individual research interviews. All child welfare workers in the study describe their work situation as very tough with a high inflow of cases which is difficult for the workers to influence. Many child welfare workers consider it to be difficult to find the time to finish their work within the timescales that are regulated in the Social Services Act. The results of the study reveal that the child welfare workers’ work environment is characterized by different cultures that influence each other, limiting the child welfare workers’ discretion and generate stress. This has a negative impact on the child welfare workers’ work environment and ultimately results in high turnover.

University libraries in cooperation with society

The resources and competence of academic libraries could play an important role concerning the third task of the university, i.e. interaction with the surrounding society. With information services suited for the needs of actors outside the academic world, libraries can provide support for regional development. At the same time, the capacity of libraries and their potential of offering information services in new areas are made clearer and marketed internally. During a two-year project financed by the EU, Jönköping University Library has developed a new service based on information providers and business intelligence in the framework of an external project organisation. This has resulted in new demands within the university.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how generation Y in RGB (fictional name) describes different leadership preferences and to further evaluate whether RGB´s recruitment strategy aligns with those preferences. A targeted selection of organization was made followed by a targeted selection of participants which resulted in eight respondents (n=8). A qualitative approach designed as a case study was conducted. The study included both unstructured and semi-structured interviews. A pilot study was carried out to get a wider view and understanding of the complexity of the organization. A complementary interview was also performed since the organization showed an interest in comparing their recruitment strategy with the participants´ descriptions of leadership preferences. The distribution of the sample was six women and two men with varying occupational roles but with two things in common, social work and the exercise of public authority. The Pilot study, main data collection and the complementary interview was analyzed using elements from both thematic- and pragmatic analysis. The result of the study showed that the overall recruitment strategy in wide terms aligned with the leadership preferences presented by generation Y. Social competence, self-awareness and presence were central aspects which were mentioned by both participants, recruitment officer and HR-consultant.

    Abstract [en]

The aim is to investigate how experiences of work amongst teachers and auditors change as a shift from input control towards action control is implemented through management by documents. The study is based on interviews with auditors and teachers with long professional experience. The result shows that action control of professionals implies that (i) the core of work shifts from being based on relationships with clients to be based on documentation; (ii) priorities change to satisfy document requirements; (iii) there is a reduction in the sense of the work being relevant. These implications reduce the professionals work-related enthusiasm. In conclusion: management by document establishes conditions that do not provide incentives for professionals to fully apply their individual capabilities, thereby also preventing professional development and learning.

Utilization of patient resources in physiotherapy interventions: Analysis of the interaction concerning non-specific low back pain2014In: Communication & Medicine: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Healthcare, Ethics and Society, ISSN 1612-1783, E-ISSN 1613-3625, Vol. 11, no 2, p. 125-137Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on an empirical study in Sweden of how patient resources come into play in physiotherapy interventions. A qualitative analysis was conducted of five video recorded first encounters between patients with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) and physiotherapists in primary care, using Conservation of Resource Theory (COR) to identify and focus on how physiotherapists made use of patients’ resources (objects, conditions, personal characteristics and energies). The findings reveal variations in how these resources are utilized during the intervention. Resources with implications for what happens in the examination room during the ongoing encounter and resources characterized by professional familiarity were both employed in the intervention. However, underutilized resources were featured in the broader lifeworld perspective of laypeople and of other professional frames. The findings raise questions about professional challenges that go beyond professional skills. This implies that professionals need to improve skills in understanding and integrating patient resources into interventions.

Are Old People Merited Veterans of Society? Some Notes on a Problematic Claim.2007In: Outlines. Critical Practice Studies, ISSN 1399-5510, E-ISSN 1904-0210, Vol. 9, no 2, p. 28-43Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article shows how merit has been used to highlight pensioners as a special population in the claims-making activities of the senior rights movement in Sweden, as well as in debates about issues concerning old age. Simply put, merit refers to the claim that pensioners have built the society and they are entitled to special treatment – for instance welfare, reverence – for this reason. Merit is concluded to be a rhetorical tool with the potential of countering images of older people as a burden to the young. It portrays seniors as a population worthy of welfare and reverence. Social movements that emphasize merit among seniors will however risk isolation, since such claims to some extent have become associated with populist attacks on immigrants, politicians and other groups labeled as non-merited.

Historiskt perspektiv på genus i skönlitteratur: Genusstrukturer i skönlitterära klassiker från 1850-talet2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Därav analyseras genusstrukturerna i böckerna i denna uppsats.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Model of Hierarchical Complexity and its Application to Phenomenography,2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Phenomenography is a commonly used qualitative method which aims at revealing the quality of different ways of experiencing various phenomena. It was originally created to examine learning and pedagogical issues, but is used to examine experiences in a variety of domains.

The aim of this explorative paper is to present the model of hierarchical complexity (MHC) and to discuss how it can be applied to phenomenographic studies. The object of study of phenomenography is the variation and change in capabilities for experiencing particular phenomena. These capabilities can, as a rule, be hierarchically ordered and “seen as more advanced, more complex, or more powerful than other capabilities” (Marton and Booth, 1997, p 111). The analysis is for example performed with the SOLO taxonomy or Werner’s theory of development. MHC is a more generic theory than many developmental theories. MHC is a formal general theory applicable to all occasions in which information is organized. The theory accounts for increases in behavioral complexity and enables measurement of these by a validated scoring procedure. It is also possible to distinguish between two kinds of qualitative differences: horizontal and hierarchical complexity.

Leadership as a driver for work motivation: a study of well-functioning primary healthcare centers in Sweden2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Little is known about how, why, or under which circumstances work motivation is formed and linked to reforms and interventions.

Aim: The aim of this study is to explore work motivation among professionals at well-functioning primary healthcare centers subject to a national healthcare reform which include financial incentives.

Material & method: Five primary healthcare centers in Sweden were purposively selected for being well-operated and representing public/private and small/large units. Forty-three interviews were completed with different medical professions and qualitative deductive content analysis was conducted.

Results: Work motivation exists for professionals when their individual goals are aligned with the organizational goals and the design of the reform. The centers’ positive management was due to a unique combination of factors, such as clear direction of goals, a culture of nonhierarchical collaboration, and systematic quality improvement work. Social processes where professionals work together as cohesive groups, and provided space for quality improvement work is pivotal in addressing how alignment is created. The units expressed a collective capacity to produce direction, alignment and commitment.

Conclusions: The design of the reforms and leadership are essential preconditions for work motivation. Leaders need to consistently translate and integrate reforms with the professionals’ drives and values. This is done by encouraging participation through teamwork, time for structured reflection and quality improvement work. The values of the study consist of showing how a range of aspects combine for primary healthcare professionals to successfully manage external reforms, and how professionals collectively produce leadership.
