International Corporate Entrepreneurship among SMEs: A test of Stevenson’s notion of Entrepreneurial Management2015In: Journal of small business management (Print), ISSN 0047-2778, E-ISSN 1540-627X, Vol. 53, no 3, p. 780-800Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Despite increasing attention devoted to international entrepreneurship, little is known about firm-level entrepreneurship carried out by established small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in international markets. We apply the opportunity-based conceptualization of “Entrepreneurial Management” by Howard Stevenson to international corporate entrepreneurship activities of SMEs. We hypothesize that the different dimensions of Stevenson's theory have a positive impact on SMEs' international corporate entrepreneurship. We test the hypotheses on a longitudinal sample of international SMEs. Our results show the expected positive effects of some, but not all, aspects of Stevenson's theory. Thereby, the paper suggests more precise boundary conditions of the theory and contributes to the literature on international corporate entrepreneurship by SMEs.

All about My Mother: Factors Influencing Women’s Entrepreneurship2019In: Academy of Management Proceedings, Academy of Management , 2019, Vol. 1Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Using data on all businesses started by mothers of young children in Sweden between 2000 and 2014, we investigate what factors are the most important drivers of entrepreneurship among mothers. We find that being unemployed or being an immigrant are important drivers of entrepreneurship among mothers. However, our findings show that the most important and primary determinant of entrepreneurship by mothers in Sweden is the amount of paternity leave taken by their partners. These findings suggest that in institutional contexts such as Sweden gender inequality is not a persistent feature of most households and that women can make career choices by negotiating with their partners who will make use of the parental benefits offered by the government.

Preserving Socioemotional Wealth in Family Firms: Asset or Liability? The Moderating Role of Business Context2013In: Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, ISSN 1042-2587, E-ISSN 1540-6520, Vol. 37, no 6, p. 1341-1360Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We ask whether choices aimed at preserving socioemotional wealth (SEW) represent an asset or a liability in family-controlled firms. Specifically, we consider one major SEW-preserving mechanism—having as chief executive officer (CEO) a member of the controlling family—and hypothesize that this choice is (1) an asset in business contexts, such as industrial districts, in which tacit rules and social norms are relatively more important, but (2) a potential liability in contexts like stock exchange markets, where formal regulations and transparency principles take center stage. The results from our empirical analysis confirm these hypotheses.

All in the family? An exploratory study of family member advisors and firm performance2015In: Family Business Review, ISSN 0894-4865, E-ISSN 1741-6248, Vol. 28, no 3, p. 227-242Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This exploratory study investigates the relationship between family members serving in an advising capacity and family firm performance. Integrating the stewardship and agency perspectives, we predict an inverted U-shaped relationship between the number of family advisors and family firm performance. We argue that the generation in control moderates this relationship such that family member advisors have a positive relationship with performance in first-generation family firms and an inverted U-shaped relationship with performance in later-generation family firms. Our empirical analysis on a sample of 128 Swedish family firms confirms our hypotheses. In the concluding section, we discuss results, contributions, and future research directions.

Related and unrelated industry variety and the internationalization of start-ups2020In: Research Policy, ISSN 0048-7333, E-ISSN 1873-7625, Vol. 49, no 10, article id 104050Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We study the relationship between industry variety in a start-up's home location and the start-up's internationalization in terms of both the likelihood of and persistence in exporting. Using a unique sample of Swedish start-ups, we find that related industry variety is positively associated with exporting likelihood and persistence, whereas unrelated industry variety is positively associated with exporting likelihood and persistence when the start-ups’ employees possess technological knowledge. We also find that employees’ international experience strengthens the positive relationship between related industry variety and start-ups’ export persistence. We provide auxiliary evidence of the proposed mechanisms through which related and unrelated industry variety affects start-ups’ internationalization—that is, through their effects on start-ups’ ability to launch novel products in foreign markets. The findings of our study provide policymakers preliminary evidence on the value of developing and sustaining local knowledge conditions and promoting labor recruitment policies in the home country to promote start-up internationalization.

Entrepreneurial growth: the role of international knowledge acquisition as moderated by firm age2014In: Journal of Business Venturing, ISSN 0883-9026, E-ISSN 1873-2003, Vol. 29, no 5, p. 687-703Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In line with repeated recent calls for research on specific forms of growth rather than on an undifferentiated notion of “total growth,” our study contributes to the understanding of entrepreneurial growth. By this we mean growth through expansion into new geographic markets and/or via the introduction of new products or services. Building on Penrose's theory of the growth of the firm and on the research streams she has in part inspired, we investigate the impact of knowledge acquisition from international markets on entrepreneurial growth both at home and abroad. We further suggest that the effects of international knowledge acquisition on entrepreneurial growth will vary with firm age. Utilizing longitudinal data on 138 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we find that the acquisition of knowledge from international markets fuels growth through market development, and that this effect is stronger for international expansion than domestic expansion. Our results also show that firm age negatively moderates the relationship between international knowledge acquisition and entrepreneurial growth via the introduction of new products or services. Specifically, international knowledge acquisition has a positive effect on growth via new products/services development in young firms, but a negative effect in mature firms. We assume this reflects changes over time in how international knowledge is managed.

    Abstract [en]

In this article the authors used longitudinal data on internationally active small and medium sized business enterprises (SMEs). In the country of Sweden, a small market country, internalization is a common occurrence. With that being said, the authors believe that Sweden is an appropriate context for their analysis and investigation. Following Westhead and others a six-year research period was selected. This responds to the call for assessing firm internationalization and growth over longer time periods.

International market exit and re-entry: An empirical study of export patterns of Swedish SMEs2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

I rapporten International Market Exit and Re-entry: An empirical study of export patterns of Swedish SMEs kartläggs svenska små och medelstora företags internationaliseringsmönster. (Baksidestext)

Policy entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial orientation in vulnerable Swedish municipalities2020In: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, ISSN 0898-5626, E-ISSN 1464-5114, Vol. 32, no 7-8, p. 473-491Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Small- and medium-sized towns (SMSTs) not integrated into expanding metropolitan regions often face industrial decline and depopulation. As a result, many of them lack resilience to change and may be classified as vulnerable. While research holds that a local government’s efforts to act in an entrepreneurial way are important for the development of vulnerable SMSTs, entrepreneurship behaviours in the local public sector remain under-investigated. In this paper, we address this gap in the literature by investigating whether and how vulnerable SMSTs differ in their entrepreneurial behaviours. Based on the concepts of policy entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial orientation, we performed a survey of Swedish local communities about their work on strengthening and renewing local business life and improving their own administrations. We analyse factors associated with these activities and examine differences between the policy entrepreneurship of vulnerable and nonvulnerable places, as well as differences within the vulnerable group. Vulnerable places rank low in entrepreneurial orientation, which may contribute to regional lock-in. Cluster analysis reveals that the vulnerable municipalities are a heterogeneous group, which we classify into “entrepreneurs’ ‘local innovators’, and ‘disengaged risktakers’. Regression analysis indicates that local social capital may increase entrepreneurial orientation in vulnerable places by strengthening the focus on innovation.

Amenities and new firm formation in rural areas2021In: Journal of Rural Studies, ISSN 0743-0167, E-ISSN 1873-1392, Vol. 85, p. 32-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Building on the neo-endogenous rural development model and the resource-based view of the firm, this paper investigates the role of place-based amenities for new firm formation. Empirically, we employ a full-population dataset encompassing new firms in Sweden from 2009 to 2016, combined with geocoded datasets with the spatial distribution of nature- and culture-based amenities. The results show that local amenities are indeed important factors in determining the rate of new firm formation. Estimating the model across urban and rural neighborhoods show that amenities are relatively more important in explaining new firm formation in rural areas as compared to urban. As such, our study contributes to the literature on diversification of the economies of rural areas by pointing at the important role that place-based amenities may play for an entrepreneurially-driven development of less developed and/or rural areas.

    Abstract [en]

In 2010, the European Union adopted the notion ‘smart’ in its new ten-year growth strategy Europe 2020 stating that Europe should become a smart, sustainable, and inclusive economy. The broad and policy-oriented concepts of smart growth and smart development are part of the strategy introduced as a response to the observed low growth rates of innovation and productivity across European regions. In all its essence, the growth strategy states that smart growth supports sustainable development, which is achieved by promoting research, innovation, and knowledge in order to attain regional economic growth. What is made less clear is how the concept of smart growth can be translated to fit a diverse set of rural regions. Other outstanding issues discussed in this paper relate to the possibility to measure and empirically address the outcome of policies for smart rural development. Hence, in this paper we conceptually analyse and bring together the ideas that underlie the logic behind policies for smart growth by focusing on smart growth from the perspective of rural regions. The paper also presents indicators of smart rural development and analyses their relevance in future empirical studies.

    Abstract [en]

This articles explores how factors present at the startup of online news enterprises influence their development and sustainability. Using entrepreneurship and management literature as a base, it presents and analyzes three case studies in which different arrays of organizational factors were present and how they affected the first three years of the organizations' activities. It reveals that "formational myopia"-pre-existing expectations and organizational objectives based on the entrepreneurs' past experiences-played important roles in their development and that the abilities of the firms to adapt their strategies and practices after establishment were crucial to their sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

This study tests Teece's conceptualization of dynamic capabilities in the context of small and medium-size firms competing in creative industries, in particular the European audiovisual production industry. This industry is characterized by immature and evolving markets where firms' dynamic capabilities are expected to lead to superior innovative performance. Using survey data from audiovisual producers in ten European countries we find that both sensing and seizing capabilities have a positive effect on firms' innovative performance. The effect, however, is curvilinear, and positive effects appear after when capabilities overcome a threshold level.

Beyond Legal Borders: Why SMEs in Sweden communicate on its Sustianbility performance, through a lens of stakeholder engagement2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Existing literature implies research about Sustainability reporting and SMEs to be limited. SMEs are more vulnerable to economic pressure which may result in enhanced challenges in integrating sustainability practice. Because of SMEs’ vulnerability to financial pressures, and the law’s burden, the Swedish government, has excluded them from the law of sustainability reporting. Despite being excluded from the law, some SMEs are communicating on sustainability anyway, and the literature suggests that indirect forces could influence the strategies of sustainability performance.

Purpose: This thesis aims to explore the underlying rationale of why SMEs in Sweden communicate on their sustainability performance, through a lens of stakeholder engagement.

Method: The study is built upon enterprise occurrence, where four SMEs based in the Jönköping region has been interviewed with open- and semi-structured questions. The study follows an interpretivism approach with an exploratory nature of discovering the topic of SME and sustainability communication.

Conclusion: This study has shown that the answer to why SMEs communicate on their sustainability performance is rather complex as it is hidden behind enterprise’s unique institutional structures with internal and external influences that shape decisions and attitudes. Throughout this study, it has been recognised that SMEs’ sustainability communication is performed beyond legal borders due to various reasons, and in particular the following; pressure from surrounding institutional structures; stakeholder relationships; and visions based on personal values and strong organisational core beliefs.

Psychometric properties of Jacelon's Attributed Dignity Scale with Iranian older people2020In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 27, no 2, p. 372-380Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of this study was the psychometric assessment of Jacelon's Attributed Dignity Scale among Iranian older population.

METHODS: Using a standard "forward-backward" translation procedure, the original English version of Jacelon's Attributed Dignity Scale was translated into Persian. Internal consistency of the scale was checked by the Cronbach's α coefficient. Convergent validity of the instrument was appraised by the Social Skills Scale and General Health Questionnaire. Factor structure of the Iranian version of Jacelon's Attributed Dignity Scale and possible interplay between its subscales were checked through recruiting a convenient sample of 300 Iranian older people and performing the confirmatory factor analysis.

FINDINGS: The estimated Cronbach's α and intraclass correlation coefficients for the Iranian version of Jacelon's Attributed Dignity Scale were in the vicinity of acceptable range, that is, 0.87 and 0.93, respectively. The output of confirmatory factor analysis revealed that a four-factor model best fitted the study data (χ2 = 323.49; df = 129; p < 0.001; comparative fit index = 0.913; Tucker-Lewis index = 0.901; root mean square error approximation = 0.074; standardized root mean square residual = 0.078). Rasch estimates of item difficulty ranged from -1.28 (less difficult) to 1.33 (more difficult). No significant cross-gender differences were observed regarding the Iranian version of Jacelon's Attributed Dignity Scale's items indicating its invariant psychometric properties for use in the Iranian men and women subgroups.

ETHICAL CONSIDERTAION: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee at the Tabriz university of medical science. Informed consent, information confidentiality, and voluntary participation were guaranteed.

CONCLUSION: The study findings were indicative of applicability of the Iranian version of Jacelon's Attributed Dignity Scale as a reliable tool in measurement of the perceived social dignity among Iranian and probably other Persian-speaking older populations.

Utvärdering och jämförelse mellan BuildingSMART, standarder inom BIM och Nationella Riktlinjer2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction, Owner, and Operator (AECOO) industry is growing, leading to an increase of complex systems creating a need for improvement concerning the efficiency of interoperability within digital information management. Missing information still appears in the information exchange due to different data sources and formats, different terminologies, software applications, and misclassification of data. Organizations and companies have developed technologies, standards in the area of BIM, and strategies to address the issues and improve the efficiency for interoperability within information management. This paper aims to investigate the challenges and barriers within interoperability, evaluate and compare BuildingSMART technologies, standards in the area of BIM, and Nationella Riktlinjer to find the current relations and future development of the three systems. Data was collected through document analysis and semi-structured interviews in a qualitative approach. The results agreed on that there is more development needed since the industry is still facing challenges and barriers regarding the interoperability. This paper ends with discussing the challenges within interoperability, current relation, possible future combinations, and development that could enable the improvement of efficiency, and further research.

    Abstract [en]

Wood construction has increased in the recent years for apartment buildings consisting of four to five floors. Compared to other building materials, wood has great environmental benefits. For a building in a larger scale constructed in wood, cross-laminated timber, also known as CLT is an option. The technology for CLT originated in Sweden during the 1990s and since then the development has increased. CLT has excellent stiffness and strength properties. The design of a floor in CLT is important for how the building and the environment are perceived indoors. The wooden floor is about five times lighter than concrete, which means that measures are required to meet the sound requirements set by Boverkets building regulations in Sweden. This will affect the span. The aim of the project is to present a knowledge overview of CLT and for floor in CLT up to 9 meters in span, to compete with concrete floor in steel and prefabricated concrete frames.

The study includes a quantitative methodology using three different data collection methods. These are literature study, document analysis and calculations. The literature study and the document analysis are based on scientific-and research articles, together with manuals. The calculations are carried out in Stora Enso's calculation program Calculatis by Stora Enso. The program follows Eurocode's design principles.

The result of the study shows that a CLT-board with laminated beams gives greater span than just a CLT-board does. The calculation means that the plate must meet the deflection requirement L / 300. Research shows that construction with CLT is increasing and there is great potential to obtain a cost-effective reduction of the carbon footprint and at the same time improve the utilization of natural resources by replacing non-renewable building materials such as concrete and steel with CLT. In order to achieve the sound requirements that are established, the CLT floor must be dimensioned thicker and measures such as additional insulation.

By looking at the results, the conclusion is drawn that CLT-floor may grow further to compete with concrete floor in the future. Currently the material is considered useful and environmental for smaller constructions for such as smaller houses, due to the sound insulation problem. For larger constructions with the similar problem can timber-concrete composite be an alternative. CLT-floor reinforced with glulam beams may be considered as a choice for larger and bigger constructions because the span widths increase, and the construction can withstand maximum deflection.

The study is limited to mainly considering CLT but also a small amount of concrete and glulam. Vibrations and environmental risks such as moisture, sunlight and fire, are not considered. The calculations the work uses are based on Eurocode 5, dimensioning of wooden structures. Other types of design principles have been excluded.

Betydelsen av ett organiserat underhållsarbete: En fallstudie utförd hos JYSK där underhållsplanen organiseras för att öka tillgängligheten2020Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

JYSK is one of North Europe's largest furniture suppliers with over 2 800 stores. The central warehouse located in Nässjö delivers to all of Sweden and although the company is well established on the market, there are shortcomings in the maintenance work. This cause for unnecessary breaks in the logistics chain which contributes to a lower availability.

The purpose of this study was to bring forth suitable action proposals that could help JYSK in their effort in establishing a functioning maintenance.  To answer the study's purpose three questions had been presented:

    1.     What type of stops occurs and what metrics can be used to calculate the availability?

    2.     How is the suppliers’ maintenance-plan designed for each equipment?

    3.     Which maintenance work should be prioritized by JYSK, based on the existing and suppliers' maintenance plans?

The study´s major demarcation was towards fully automated equipment only as well as no metrics was calculated and presented.

A case study consisting of a literature study was accomplished with the purpose to gather data to be able to answer the questions. Qualitative methods that was accomplished was an interview, observations, and document collection.

The result presented in this study was a well-developed maintenance plan, checklists based on the recommendation of the supplier and suggestions on follow ups that focuses on visualisation and metrics.

The study's conclusion was that JYSK had all the necessary tools and instructions on how to develop and implement a working maintenance plan provided. The company only had to implement the given recommendations in their everyday routine. It was necessary for JYSK to identify the causes behind the stops to be able to eliminate them.

During the practical use of Design Automation (DA) System in a company, the lack of assistance from either documentation work about the whole system or management of knowledge could bring out some obstacles when engineers reuse existing knowledge and information. The purpose of this project is to explore an approach of documentation and knowledge management in DA System. The study is mainly based on the actual case of seat heater DA system developed by JTH.

Based on preset functional requirement for the potential solution, several principles and methods of documentation and knowledge management are introduced such as MOKA, CommonKADS, SysML and PVM. A number of useful applications such as DRed (Design Rationale Editor), PC PACK, Sementic MediaWiki and Product Model Manager became candidates solutions for this project. The selection of final approach was Sementic MediaWiki, and this is based on the comparison of the result from evaluation of functionality of each application.

Due to specificity of documentation on the DA system, the “process based” approach had been used for structuring system included knowledge instead of using a systematical method like either MOKA or CommonKADS completely. Setting up interconnection between different knowledge objects was one of the most important tasks in this project because it enables capturing and retrieving of knowledge.

Sementic MediaWiki, a powerful text representative and web-based tool has been used as a platform of representing the whole knowledge and information. With its implementation, the performance of Sementic MediaWiki had been tested according to the preset functional requirement. After a slight refine process to the solution, the satisfactory result had been achieved, and also proved the applicability of Sementic Wiki in such kind of project.
