    Towards a practice theory of entrepreneuring2011Ingår i: Small Business Economics, ISSN 0921-898X, E-ISSN 1573-0913, Vol. 36, nr 2, s. 135-150Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Adopting a process perspective on entrepreneurship, captured by the notion of “entrepreneuring,” the emerging practice-theory approach in the social sciences is proposed as an appropriate frame of reference. Entrepreneuring as a practice is ontologically/epistemologically qualified by presenting phronesis as the relevant guiding intellectual virtue in the knowledge-creating process. A constructionist view invites different modes of coping with an ambiguous environment, including the use of analogizing and bricolage when enacting entrepreneuring by way of improvisation and personal networking. The notion of “organizing context” is introduced to grasp how collective support for entrepreneuring may be mobilized. Enactive research as an interactive way for doing field research is outlined and illustrated in order to complete the paradigmatic and theoretical arguments for a practice-theory approach to entrepreneuring with an adequate methodology.

Immigrant Enterprise: A study of business owners in Jönköping, Sweden, their challenges and motives.2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Background The subject of immigrant enterprise has recently become an interesting phenomenon for researchers to investigate. There are numerous books and articles written about this subject, discussing the importance of and influences immigrant enterprises contribute to.

Researchers have also asked themselves what factors are the main indicators, making immigrants start their own businesses. Some argue that one indicator is the number of years in the host country. There is also research suggesting that it is not the number of years that determines salaries and other job-market related factors. Instead it is the time of entry into the new country that pushes people into self-employment.

We will in this thesis investigate and determine the challenges and motivations immigrant business owners have to face when stating their businesses in Jönköping, Sweden.

Purpose Our purpose is twofold. First, we examine if the immigrant business owners faced any challenges when starting their business in Jönköping and how they in that case overcame them. Then, we investigate immigrant business owners’ motivations for starting a business in Jönköping, Sweden.

Method We have in this thesis chosen to conduct a qualitative study based on interviews with nine different immigrant business owners in Jönköping. They have been business owners for more than three years and speak either or a combination of Swedish, Iranian and English. The authors of this thesis are from Sweden and Iran with the common spoken language English and this has guided our choice of interviewees.

Conclusion After analyzing our empirical material we conclude that immigrant business owners’ biggest challenge during the start-up phase is financing and receiving a bank loan. But also that the immigrant business owners we have interviewed started their businesses because they wanted to, not because they had to.

    ‘Involuntary self-employment’ as a public policy issue: A cross-country European review2010Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research, ISSN 1355-2554, E-ISSN 1758-6534, Vol. 16, nr 2, s. 112-129Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – There is growing political interest in new forms of precarious self-employment located in a “grey area” between employment and self-employment. A wide range of concepts has been used to debate this issue, and this paper aims to clarify these debates through the concept of involuntary self-employment.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper reviews the empirical, conceptual and legal-policy approaches to involuntary self-employment via three country case studies in Finland, Germany and the UK. A range of relevant domestic academic literature, articles in the media, selected key expert interviews, and policy and legal documents are employed.

Findings – Conceptual clarity regarding involuntary self-employment is achieved through a discussion of two aspects of the phenomenon: the characteristics of involuntariness from a motives-based perspective, and the legal/economic perspectives and policy issues. The motives-based analysis argues that involuntariness as such does not seem to have severe implications on the individuals' well being, given that the individual earns a satisfactory livelihood from her or his business activities. The discussion of the characteristics of and regulation related to working arrangements in the “grey area” between employment and self-employment, where the self-employed individual is strongly dependent on the principal, shows that it is very difficult to regulate quasi self-employment without harming “voluntary” forms of enterprise and inter-firm cooperation at the same time.

Originality/value – The key contribution of the paper is to facilitate a foundation for subsequent empirical research and policy development.

Strategic renewal in retail companies by means of social e-commerce2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Social media has changed the way of communication and information exchange while e-commerce was a big inno- vation in retail business. The merge of social media and e- commerce has created social e-commerce which is a new phenomenon in retail business during past few years. More and more companies develop social e-commerce and there is a need to study this phenomenon in more depth.

The purpose of this master thesis is to analyse   and   explain   the   phenomena  of   social   e- commerce and show the reasons behind the decision to develop this   strategy   in  retail  companies.  Social  e- commerce is studied  from strategic renewal perspective and main focus lies on factors which are considered while developing the strategy of social e-commerce.

Method: Social e-commerce is a new and not much studied phe- nomenon, therefore, an inductive approach and case study research method were chosen for this re- search. Five retail companies were chosen as case studies. During the research process secondary and primary data were collected. The main source of information for the case studies was semi-structured in-depth interviews.

Conclusion: The authors have found that interviewed companies per- ceived the implementation of social e-commerce as a pro- active behaviour with great potential capabilities for their business such as gaining market share, brand awareness, building relationships or increasing the length and level of interactions. Also, the study of four main elements of so- cial e-commerce from strategic renewal perspective re- vealed the motives, social media decisions, challenges and outcomes to incorporate social e-commerce.

STRATEGY FORMATION IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS: THE ROLE OF STORYTELLING2010Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This paper takes an interest in the past, as depicted by family business owners, and how it is reflected in the governance of the firm. The purpose of this paper is to explore how family business owners express and perceive their family business story and the implications for the strategy formation of the firm. Through the storytelling from 20 cases, we conclude that they embrace their past through different degrees of adoption and their promotion or prevention focus. We construct four typologies: strategy formation through reinforcement, renewal, remembrance and rhetoric. The implications of storytelling and these typologies are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Family business ‘history’ and ‘the past’ are in the literature used interchangeably. History is often referred to as something static that can be elicited and analyzed from a firm’s past. Further, how culture is ingrained by history, especially the founder’s role is a well researched area (e.g. Dyer, 1986; Kets de Vries, 1993; Gersick et al., 1997; Garzia-Alvarez et al., 2002). The impact of family values and traditions on firm governance in general has also received attention (Alvesson and Melin, 1989; Kets de Vries, 1993; Hall et al., 2001; Hall, 2003; Brundin, Nordqvist and Melin, 2010). Hall, Melin and Nordqvist (2006) argue that family values, goals and relations have an impact on the strategy formation in the family firm. However, there is still scant research into how family business history may form firms’ narrative strategies. This paper suggests some perspectives and tools that can bring some more light on these matters.

A tenet of this paper is that discourse understanding is strategic. (Discourse) strategies, normally unconscious and instinctive, are formed to create multilevel representations employed in discourse understanding and memory (Dijk & Kintsch 1983). That is, it does not concur with Hall et al.’s, (2006)  claim that strategy is about “moving from its [the firm’s] history to its future” (p. 255). Along with Brundin & Kjellander, forthcoming), the paper claims that the firm’s history is an active part of the ongoing strategy formation of the firm.  When the family firm history has consequences for the present strategy formation of the firm, we claim that family business owners strategize.

The purpose is to discuss the unconscious and instinctive sides of these narrative strategies through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of ‘habitus’. Firm praxis is in this paper seen as governed by habitus, which comprises both a practical apprehension of the world based on decisions made in the past as well as constructed, constructing dispositions “constituted in practice and […] always oriented towards practical function” (Bourdieu, 1990a: 52). Empirically, the paper applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to look into how a firm’s narrative strategies are constructed around a sort of habitus.

The Morgan family firm’s narrative strategies as ‘habitus’2010Ingår i: EIASM 6TH WORKSHOP ON FAMILY FIRMS MANAGEMENT RESEARCH CULTURE AND VALUESBARCELONA, SPAIN, JUNE 6-8, 2010, 2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to discuss firm narrative strategies mainly through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of habitus, as well as his notions of field and capital. It looks at the Morgan firm narrative strategies employed during the 1912 Pujo money trust investigation and the 1933 Pecora Commission’s hearings in the wake of Wall Street Crash of 1929.  Although more than twenty years apart, on both these occasions, the firm representatives refer to a discourse of codes, customs and traditions that had been carefully constructed and reconstructed, remembered and perpetuated, in the Morgan firm and family, as well as in private banking of that time in general. The paper also addresses how firm history may affect strategy formation in firms’ present and future practice through firm codes, customs and traditions, what Bourdieu calls the ‘capital of the field’. Investigating the 1912 and the 1933 Congressional hearings from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) viewpoint, the paper shows how Morgan firm discouse is constructed as a sort of habitus, that is as a complex of common ideas, concepts or perception schemes of related emotional attitudes firm and outside-firm intersubjectively shared within a specific group of persons as well as of similar behavioural dispositions.

This paper calls for a view of the firm as emerging through interactions and activity, as relational and dispositional. Relational in the sense that it focuses on formative and substantial realities, individuals and groups rather than objective relations. Dispositional in the sense that this view notes the possible actions agents take as a group and in the structure of the situations where they act or, more precisely, in the relations between them (Bourdieu 1998.

The Novelist as Entrepreneur, the Novel as Entrepreneurship2010Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

We look at the potential of novelists to be producers of entrepreneurship and the novel as a potential carrier and product of entrepreneurship. Our argument is that some novelists challenge established norms and institutions and that some novels can be seen as products that aim to destroy the old, or at least improve the old, and give way to something new. We draw on the work of a classic Swedish novelist Carl-Johan Love Almqvist, and his novel – Why Not! (Det går an!, 1839). We combine a narrative approach with an interpretive framework from institutional entrepreneurship and literary theory. Almqvist uses the novel as a form of representation and carrier of ideas that challenge the established roles of women in society and economy. While contemporary literature on institutional entrepreneurship tends to focus on representations of accomplished change, our focus on narrative fiction also allows an emphasis on representations of change opportunities. Concentrating on the opportunity to change and taking a narrative approach, we put creativity and time at the heart of the process of institutional entrepreneurship, rather than merely action and change

Exploring Corporate Greening: a cross-cultural perspective2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of national culture on corporate greening with specific focus on motivations that drive companies to respond to environmental issues and strategies that companies develop in this regard. The existing literature indicates that the research on motivational and strategic aspects of corporate greening is limited from cultural perspective. Thus, a qualitative study of Swedish and Belarusian companies was conducted to illustrate what induces firms to go green and to describe what environmental strategies are implemented by them. The analysis of received empirical data was concentrated on aligning national culture features with the motivations for environmental initiatives and relevant elements of green strategies. The findings demonstrate the connection between national culture and environmental strategy through green motivations. Finally, some implications for further research as well as practitioners are presented.
