    Abstract [en]

    This thesis has been done on a haulage contractor company named GP-Last (AB Gustav Perssons Åkeri) and the purpose with the paper was to analyse their traffic from Malmö to Stockholm and leave suggestions on efforts that GP-Last can use to increase their level of transportation quality. This has been done with two main questions, which problem do they have today and which efforts they need to do to solve their problems? Through a case study with interviews as method to collect data it showed that GP-Last had four main problems.

            Not enough information about their freights. The transport planning unit in Malmö doesn’t have the exact delivery address when GP-Last begins to bring in the gods.

            There are no clear routes. The transport planning unit in Malmö doesn’t know how the staffs in Bromma want the trucks to be loaded.

            Inadequate communication between the two sites in Malmö and Bromma. The staffs in Malmö don’t get informed about their mistakes when they load the trucks wrong which results in that the same mistakes are being repeated.

            Lack of attention about how many mistakes that are made. GP-Last have no information about how many mistakes that is being made and how long time it takes to fix the mistakes.    

    The efforts that GP-Last has to make to solve these problem is first to inform Schenker, the company that receives the booking of the freights, about the importance of information about the freights that the unit of transport planning needs. A route list was made in consultation with staff in Bromma that’s going to help the transport planning unit in Malmö. By adopting deviation report when a truck isn’t correctly loaded leads to better communication between the to sites and GP-Last gets good information about how many mistakes that are being made and how long time it takes to fix them.

    Abstract [en]

    It is important for small and medium-sized corporations to collaborate in networks in order to develop capacity, capability, and competence to perform product development and become suppliers of complete systems. The purpose of this study is to identify barriers and to develop an analytical framework of inter-organizational collaboration in network settings. In this paper we present a tentative four-dimensional framework in terms of surface of integration, scope of integration, time horizon of integration, and intensity of integration. This framework can be used to analyze how network settings are developed, in terms of structural design of the network, the design of the workflow in collaborative settings, and the aspects of handling the psychological and social boundaries between people.

    Abstract [en]

    In order to handle increased competition small and medium sized companies are collaborating in networks, strategic alliance, or partnership etc. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how direction and accountability is handled in network settings. The authors have performed an extensive case study of one collocated network consisting of four independent companies. This networking has enabled the companies to accept larger customer orders than no single company could handle on their own. It has also made them capable of reaching a high level of adaptation to customer demands regarding development, manufacturing, delivery, and support of the complete product. The high level of inter-company integration has created conditions for the network to develop self-organizing characteristics in terms of autopoietic and sympoietic systems. While the first focuses on the relations between companies within the network, the second focuses on relations between the network and the environment. This self-organizing approach is based on strategic conversation between companies at all organizational levels and participation of managers as well as engineers in the design of inter-and intra-organizational structures and processes. In self-organizing systems direction comes from closeness to customers and strategic dialogue between management and engineers and accountability is a consequence of high level of situational visibility and information exchange on all hierarchical levels among companies in this network.

    Abstract [en]

    A crucial issue in corporate networks is to identify to what extent different strategic and operational decisions need to be coordinated between the involved companies. In this paper we elaborate on the issue of synchronization of information flow based on interconnectivities between companies in order to coordinate a corporate network by the means of DSM, Dependence Structure Matrix. The results show that DSM can be used to identify interconnectivities among actors in a network and to identify which information that needs to be shared between companies in the network.

    Abstract [en]

    Automotive industry faces two major problems. One is to develop standard platforms to reach high volumes and low cost. The other is to use platforms for enabling variation of models that suit customer needs, local market demands, and restrictions. Platform thinking embraces several industrial levels, systems integrators, global and local suppliers, and markets. How can the dualism between standardization of components and model variation be managed and which trade-offs need to be made?

    In this paper we have identified and analyzed different approaches to platform concept from technical as well as organizational, production, and product development perspectives. Platform technology improves flexibility in production and product development. However, when radical changes are made, new design of platform is not easily made, i.e. propagation of requirements and changes in models vs. platforms. When this happens, several production systems have to be entirely rebuilt causing major capital investments, redesign at suppliers etc. Hence, platform technology reduces product development flexibility.

    Abstract [en]

    In this note, we derive an approximation for the mean curvature normal vector on vertices of triangulated surface meshes from the Young-Laplace equation and the force balance principle. We then demonstrate that the approximation expression from our physics-based derivation is equivalent to the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator approach in the literature. This work, in addition to providing an alternative expression to calculate the mean curvature normal vector, can be further extended to other mesh structures, including non-triangular and heterogeneous meshes.

    At present, it has become increasingly common for the end user to vary their work position At present, it has become increasingly common for the end user to vary their work position during the working day. This is due to the fact that the worker is encountering repetitive activities for long periods of time, which can lead to various problems on the body. Variation and movement changes counteract positive fatigue and various problems that would hurt the body. From this a category of furniture that can be customized and changes after the user has grown forward and established itself in the furniture market. This candidate thesis takes place in the product development category and focuses on studying the economic and assembly consequences that may arise in connection with a design change. By studying the changes, it can be seen whether the changes will be economically justifiable, which is why the idea is to be implemented. The approach that the students chose to use was based on a preparatory study of the project, which then developed into concepts. These concepts were weighed against a product specification created at the preparatory study of the project. Once concrete evidence has been given that the requirements are met, a study on how the design can affect assembly and economy can be implemented. The goal of this project was to reduce the friction of the component by making a design change. A criteria that arose during the preliminary investigation is that the stability of the product shall not suffer when the friction is reduced and therefore a study was also made of stability after the design changes. The completed design change was then analyzed using observations, qualitative interviews, time studies, work measurements, analysis of flow charting, economic analysis and literature studies. The purpose of this analysis is to control changes that a structural change creates and to see what financial differences will occurring. By checking the assembly and the economic aspects of design changes, a profitable proposal will be reported to the company.

    The proposal that is presented in the project means that the most suitable concept that is calculated and tested in practice, turned out to be better than the current plastic-detail. Comparing the current plastic-detail and the concept it turned out that the total time on the montage reduced 3.55 %, removes the lubricant from the mount process, capacity increase with 4%, maintain current stability in the table, total costs savings by 66.4% and theoretical friction reduction by 57.14%.

    Abstract [en]

    The literature on supply chain management indicates that cross-functional integration (CFI) may be a necessary practice to bring together demand and supply areas, and such an initiative can alleviate conflicts and improve the efficiency of the entire supply chain. However, there is little emphasis on the operational and technical aspects of CFI as a managerial practice and how this can influence demand processes. Thus, the aim of this paper is to analyze how the cross-functional integration contributes to carry out the demand forecasting process. In order to reach this aim, a case study was conducted in a Brazilian subsidiary of a multinational vehicle manufacturer. In total, sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with managers of vehicle manufacturer and with its suppliers and resellers. As a result, it was identified that joint planning, willingness to work in team and group spirit were the most efficient tools to generate positive impacts in the organization and that factors such as cross-functional meetings and job rotation can present good results to increase the level of integration and improve the accuracy of the demand forecasting. Finally, this work suggests that crossfunctional integration could be used to improve market responsiveness and to obtain better accuracy in forecasting demand.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – This study aims to explore the enablers and barriers to design-driven innovation, defined as the innovation of product meanings, in the product-development process. Previous research provides some insights into what enables and hinders design-driven innovation; however a detailed understanding of these factors is missing. Design/methodology/approach – A long-term case study was conducted at a furniture company between 2009 and 2016. Interviews were conducted with respondents within the company, as well as with partners such as retailers and designers. Findings – This paper presents an overview of the identified enablers and barriers. The results demonstrate that enablers and barriers occur in all phases of the product-development process. Second, the connections between enablers and barriers are presented. These are found both within and across different phases, and extend beyond the company’s influence. Research limitations/implications – This study demonstrates how the innovation of product meanings is influenced throughout all phases of the product-development process. Therefore, there is a need to go beyond the mere identification of enablers and barriers. More is gained from generating a thorough understanding of the causes and connections of these factors, including the changes over time. Practical implications – This study demonstrates the need for companies to be able to map what enables and hinders design-driven innovation in their product-development process, where a distinction needs to be made between internal and external factors, to enhance value creation. Originality/value – This study presents a rare long-term case study on design-driven innovation. This study provides new knowledge on the enablers and barriers a company faces while adapting its productdevelopment process to accommodate design-driven innovation.

So far, it has mostly been studied in contexts where the buyer is the assumed end user. There has been little research about design-driven innovation in other contexts, such as business-to-business and public contexts. Here, companies need to create value for multiple stakeholders. In this study, these are defined as users, buyers and influencers. The aim of this study is to explore how companies consider the different stakeholders in the innovation of product meanings. Two companies participated in a case study. The results demonstrate that both companies mainly focus on addressing needs. However, while one case company prioritizes the perspective from the user, the other focuses more on the buyer. The results illustrate the increased complexity that companies need to manage in design-driven innovation in these contexts.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to fill a research gap in the understanding of the involved mechanisms between the innovation process and creativity in a manufacturing company. In particular focus are the two innovation process interfaces between the technology development, product development and production departments and their influence on creativity and information flow. A conceptual framework is proposed, based on the combination of previous research in individual creativity and innovation process, to assess the influence via the innovation process interfaces on product knowledge and creative climate as creativity prerequisites. This study uses an explorative two single case study design with integrated triangulation and an abductive approach to fulfilling the research aim. These case studies took place in two Swedish manufacturing companies with a complete in-house innovation process using semi-structured interviews, two questionnaires and focus groups. The findings imply that the innovation process affects the basic prerequisites of individual creativity knowledge and creative climate due to its structural, strategic and physical implementation. Furthermore, the interfaces between the innovation sub-processes technology development, product development and production mediate the exchange of information between the involved departments. The results of this study adding valuable insights in this research field and propose further research including systems theory to achieve further in-depth understanding.

    Many organisations cooperate with customers and integrate in various ways to create further operational synergy and to reduce uncertainty in demand. Supply chain integration offers the opportunity to capture synergies and there are many advantages for organisations that integrate into networks of customers (and suppliers). Sharing of information between organisations makes it possible for a supplier to obtain early signals about changing market conditions and thereby reduce its reliance on uncertain forecasts on the demand side to get a higher utilization of production facilities and lower safety stocks. However, there are also opposite drivers of uncertainties seen from a subcontractor’s perspective, e.g. smaller customer structure that increases dependency. The optimal strategy is to balance these drivers. The aim of this paper is to observe risk and uncertainties inside the transactional environment from a subcontractor’s perspective.     Abstract [en]

    This paper concentrates on risk management in order fulfilment processes in dyadic relationships. “Risk” in this context means the possibility of a negative outcome of any real capital investments from the point of an order acceptance. A number of risk factors that might be of importance for a negative outcome as well as the basic concepts of managing risks in dyadic relationships are identified from a risk management and transaction cost theory perspective. Furthermore, perceived risk factors a number and their active and passive management are discussed. The results show that the risk strategy towards new customers is to avoid some of the risk factors while the same factors are minimized through various mitigation efforts while dealing with established customers.

    Abstract [en]

    This project is about developing an existing machine that customizes roller chains. The old machine is manufactured and used by the Swedish transmission company Jens S Transmissioner. However, it turns out to be inadequate in many aspects, such as its safety guard and ergonomics. The aim of this thesis is to help Jens S to retrieve a new manufacturing plan for a machine that satisfies the operators and companies demands. The authors will not build the machine and more advanced machine parts such as power sources will be purchased from subcontractors.

    In order to achieve a clear image of what problems had to be solved the machine was carefully observed and issues were discussed with the operator. Out of these discussions five questions were formulated which act as guidelines throughout the project.

    Each question were attempted to be answered by creating a number of ideas that were conceived by using various idea generating methods. Three different possible concepts, which differed in level of complexity, were achieved using a morphological matrix.

    By applying different mechanical design processes and using tools such as FEA- studies and Computer Aided Design the construction and its different parts were developed and improved.

    After choosing one of the concepts and improve it even more the project resulted in a machine construction that managed to fulfill the problems and give improved work ergonomics and efficiency for the operator.

    Since the project was lead independently it successfully gave an increased feeling and understanding of mechanical engineering and product development. There has been a continuous effective co-operation during the whole process where both parts contributed with their own specific skills. However, various obstacles showed up. These obstacles have implied new insights such as many good ideas comes from developing other, and thus problems should be considered as an encouragement for improvement rather than a discouragement.

    The pursuit for a greater competitiveness has brought changes in modern production, where there is an ongoing transition from labour-dependent production to an increased automation in production plants. The increase of automation and the advance of technology has meant that production equipment has become more sophisticated and complicated to maintain.

    The changes have brought greater demands on the dependability of production equipment in order to meet customer requirements and also maintain competitiveness. The execution of an effective maintenance has become an important factor in order to achieve a dependable production plant.

    Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant works with both operator and specialist maintenance, where measurement on equipment are carried out and preventive maintenance plan has been developed. On the other hand, the empty-packaging-supplying system, which supplies empty cargo carriers to the packaging machines and to the cold storage warehouse, lacks a maintenance plan and therefore only emergency maintenance work are applied. The purpose of this study has been to develop a preventive maintenance plan for the empty-packaging-supplying system of rolltainers. This has taken alongside an interference analysis where interferences were mapped and then a proposal for action was devised.

    All data was obtained in Arla Foods Jönköping’s dairy plant, where the methods that were used are observations, interviews, workshops and document studies. Literature studies, that treats basic maintenance principles and Total Productive Management, TPM, where also performed in order to provide a theoretical basis for the study.

    The analysis covers a compilation of interferences, through a Pareto chart, where those interferences which affected the supplying system most could be identified. The analysis showed that 49,3 percent of all the interferences was due to rolltainers that got stuck on curves and defective rolltainers that went through controls and caused a stop of the supplying system. An analysis was also made of the current maintenance work and how the lack of a maintenance plan affects the supplying system.

    Based on the analysis, a proposal for action was devised for the two most prevalent interferences and a preventive maintenance plan for the supplying system was developed. With the help of literature studies, maintenance staffs competencies and the suppliers maintenance guide, a preventive maintenance plan was developed, where great emphasis was put on to not introduce an alien working method. Since the whole production works with RIS-boards and the personnel are familiar with them, it was viewed as a suitable working method. The maintenance plan consists of scorecards, RIS-cards, with instructions for each area, and will also serve as a checklist for the maintenance work to take place at the right time. In order for the maintenance work to be fulfilled a delegation of responsibility for the maintenance work has been made. The RIS-boards enables error reports to be made in a proper way, delegate responsibility and enables documentations of performed reparations.

    Furthermore, Arla Foods Jönköping is recommended to integrate the newly developed maintenance plan with SAP, which is an enterprise resource planning software, which the maintenance department is currently working with to perform preventive maintenance on the packaging machines. Also, an implementation of TPM should be applied throughout the whole organization, where the newly developed maintenance plan is considered to be a basis for achieving interference-free production through a structured approach and create a commitment in the organization to work together for continuous improvement efforts. In the long term, consideration should be given to reconstruct the rolltainer tracks and create more direct transportation tracks to avoid curves and the interferences they create.

    Today, the competition between companies are very strong and fighted. In particular, small-medium size companies (SMEs) need to upgrade continuously in order to be in line with new technologies and new strategies that tends to develop companies in terms of productivity and quality.

    SMEs need, indeed, to be always competitive in a changeable market and to achieve competitive advantage through implementation of new technologies and theoretical methods or techniques. The implementation of those methods leads the company to increase its level of productivity and quality in order to achieve a competitive place within the market.

    The Gunasekaran framework is a tool which is useful in order to achieve a higher level of productivity and quality within a SME. This framework was studied and analyzed in order to be applied in a real life situation.

    This research focuses on the application of the same framework in a Mexican small company with the aim to develop and increase the level of productivity and quality of one department.

    Within the application of this framework, were applied the main concepts explained by the same Gunasekaran and they were analyzed in order to understand if a possible application could be useful to achieve success within the department.

    Abstract [en]

    Gray cast iron has been investigated with respect to surface turbulence during mould filling. Different levels of flow velocities have been provoked in a vertically parted sand mould. The thermal resistant transparent front side of the mould permitted the observation of the flow pattern due to high speed camera registration. The registered frames including the liquid surface were investigated using image analyses. The results show good correlation between the average flow velocity and the liquid iron surface extension. Consequently it has been demonstrated that an increased absorption of hydrogen and nitrogen during mould filling is dependent on the level of liquid surface turbulence.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this report is to survey Swedex AB’s production costs and to gather all info into a manageable calculation tool. This was made by time and motion studies, interviews of the personnel. All factors were gathered into an Excel chart.

    The calculation was made according to an additional-charge-method that was considered to satisfy Swedex AB’s goal. This makes a complete-cost-estimate which is important when the selling price should cover the production costs. The blades were divided into different populations to facilitate the calculation work. The division was made with the production cost in consideration to minimize the risk of losing parameters.

    The time and motion study, which is the basis of the calculation, was obtained by the group and gave insight of the saw blade production. Here it was discovered, what was said to be a bottleneck was not the case.

    Swedex AB has a great amount of products in labour, this in opposite to the “just in time”-philosophy, but Swedex AB see’s this as a resource. This is seen as a utilization increaser, to keep up the production rate.

    Swedex AB has a lot of old machines, but these have to be part of the calculation while they in a near future will be reinvested with new machines. An adjustment has been done to consider purchase price, second hand price and service/repair costs.

    AGES Hörle is an industrial company which machine and process metal products, mainly focused towards the automotive industry. The company itself, and the manufacturing industry as a whole, are working at maximum capacity due to the recent years upsurge in the worldwide economy. This has resulted in an increased amount of money being spent on investments within the manufacturing industry, which now is reaching all-time high levels. Many smaller companies however, have not yet had time to develop standardized routines to ensue during these investments, even though investments to increase their capacity being urgently needed. Furthermore, are difficulties being experienced when the profitability of an investment is to be calculated, since there are many factors that implicit affect an investment, which not always are apparent in the first place.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate what factors influence the effectiveness of an investment, mainly focused on the manufacturing industry. Furthermore, the format of a standardized investment procedure is to be investigated and developed. By examination of already existing literature and theories, the factors which affect the efficiency of an industrial investment were discovered. A case study at AGES Hörle was performed to gain a deeper insight in how an investment procedure can be performed. The case study involved several different phases of information gathering, such as interviews, observation and examination of already existing investment procedures.

    The result of this study concludes that companies which are to invest in their production, carefully should investigate what factors that will be affected by the proposed investment. This is since the factors which will be affected, may differ a lot between different investments. Furthermore, the study reveals that a company’s competition factors are majorly affected by the investments made in production. Lastly, it is concluded that an investment procedure ought to be standardized to the highest possible degree. Thus, reducing the risk of human error and minimizing the individual leeway, which otherwise might cause biased influence on the outcome of a planned investment.

    Today the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) is in a process of transformation, with the focus changing from homeland defence to more expeditionary operations. This change is being driven by a trend towards increasing international commitments. The shift from a national to an international focus has created a new set of demands on SAF which place pressure for greater efficiency on the supply chain, not least the order fulfilment process (OFP). Today material managers can have a significant impact on lead-time reduction, but often it is not clear on which aspects of the process managers should focus their efforts and capital to bring about improvements in the supply chain and the order fulfilment process.

    To increase understanding of this phenomenon and spread knowledge about the subject, the purpose of this thesis has been to analyze factors in the order fulfilment process for Role 2 medical equipment, in order to meet the new demands for developing military capabilities, such as NBG, in the near future. This has been completed with the support of theory on commercial supply chain management and an inductive approach has been taken.

    The results of the analysis show that there are similarities between the empirical and theoretical elements. Several actors in the process are well aware of what needs to be done to improve the OFP; hence, there are some implications worthy of emphasis. However, the results also indicate that the use of measurements is not considered as a key principle for the management of processes by the respondents. Nevertheless, by using measurements in the OFP, SAF could better define the actual order cycle time and indirectly improve the OFP.

    The main conclusion from the analysis is that competence seems to be the essential factor in increasing efficiency in the OFP to meet the demand for the development of new military capabilities, such as the NBG. It almost appears that this factor has been forgotten or is being neglected by SAF. Therefore, in order to progress, and improve the OFP, it is strongly recommended that SAF takes a much more serious approach to specialized education and training programs in logistics management in the future.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis has been performed at IKEA Jönköping. The purpose was to identify what kind of forecasting system IKEA Jönköping is using and analyze its problems. The data collection was based on interviews with a total of 6 people working at IKEA Jönköping, IKEA of Sweden (IOS) in Älmhult and observation at the Sales Supply Support division (SSS). 

    From the empirical study several problems were identified linked with the performance of the forecasting. Problems with understanding the initial forecast from IOS were identified and this was because of lack of information about demand. SSS also wanted to know their local market in a better way this to be able to make more accurate forecast. Finally all the departments at IKEA Jönköping which were working with forecasting wanted a closer collaboration between SSS, sales and the logistics department also wanted to have better information exchange.

    The result from this thesis explain what kind of forecasting system IKEA Jönköping is using and gives suggestions to solve the problems mentioned above. We have highlighted the importance of having a closer collaboration between IOS and IKEA Jönköping and between the different departments working with forecasting. Furthermore we have explained the importance of creating guidelines and routines regarding the forecasts and the flow of information.

    By considering our solutions presented in this thesis we think that the problems addressed above could be managed and hopefully lead towards a better forecasting performance at IKEA Jönköping.

    The thesis has been carried out at Nedis AB in Jönköping. The aim was to develop proposals on approaches that could help the company to continually improve their warehouse operations by eliminating unnecessary operations, making the warehouse more structured and how they better could use the staff's suggestions for improve-ment. The collection of data consists of observations, interviews with a total of nine people from the staff of Nedis AB and a benchmarking conducted at Husqvarna AB. A number of shortcomings and weaknesses in procedures at the warehouse were iden-tified. Packing stations were not standardized and they were seen as poorly structured and messy. Furthermore, procedures for maintenance and cleaning of the warehouse were flawed. There was no one in charge for maintenance, replenishment and clean-ing materials for the packing stations. There were no clear organization for the im-provements efforts in the warehouse, and also a low utilization and management of staff's ideas. The results of this thesis are suggested approaches that can address the weaknesses identified and that can be used to standardize the work of the warehouse of Nedis AB by establishing clear roles and responsibilities, create conditions for participation, structuring and creating procedures to maintain an organized workplace. In order to work towards continuous improvement, we propose a method where Nedis AB can work with visualization of the improvement process. We also suggest that the compa-ny use boards to easily give feedback and better monitor the on-going improvement efforts. If Nedis AB choose to work enthusiastically with the improvement process and to clarify the objectives of the staff, we believe that the proposals presented in this study will help the company achieve its goal to work towards continuous improvement.

    Purpose - The purpose of the thesis is to record the content of the information shared by buyer to supplier in independent dyadic business relationships in the clothes manufacturing industry of Imbaba and Warrak, Great Cairo, Egypt. The objective is as well to describe how this sharing is managed in terms of communication frequency, order cycle time and information technology used.

    Methodology – A case study was performed on four companies in the clothes manufacturing industry of Imbaba and Warrak, Egypt. The empirical data was collected through six semi-structured interviews. The results were thereafter analyzed through a summarized framework.

    Findings - The content of shared information is mainly of traditional character, nevertheless do 50 % of the relationships as well include elements of additional soft information. When the information sharing is performed through regular communication do the frequency vary with an average of 0.43, once every 2.3 days. The order cycle times vary from delivery the same day as order placement to three days after order placement, with an average of 0.5 days. The information is shared through two different information technologies: face-to-face and telephone.

    Research implications – Imbaba and Warrak are considered one of the poorest districts in the Great Cairo region. The region has although seen great development the last 12-15 years and is today a main district for the industry of clothes manufacturing in Cairo. The role of information sharing yet appears to be poorly examined.

    Originality/value - Making the situation evident to the case companies will impact on their possibilities to make further improvements within the area of information sharing.

    This paper identifies the means of communication in a shop floor context and how these influence the workers’ perceptions of MS priorities. 28 interviews with workers and managers at four metal working SMEs in Sweden showed that there are significant similarities among the companies in relation to all communication elements and that the main communication channel is shop floor meetings. However, significant for all four companies is the lack of a strategic perspectives in the message content. This paper contributes to the management of the worker-manager relationship in relation to MS formation and the role communication plays for strategic consensus.

    Abstract [en]

    Decisions made and actions taken by individuals in the operations function impact the formation of a company’s manufacturing strategy (MS). Therefore, it is important that the MS is understood and agreed on by all employees, that is, strategic consensus among the individuals in the operations function is essential. This research contributes to the current body of knowledge by including a workers’ perspective on MS formation. It is the workers on the shop floor who bring the MS to life in the actual operations through their daily decisions and actions. The MS falls short if the priorities outlined do not materialise in practice as intended. The purpose of this research is to investigate how the individuals in the operations function perceive the MS in order to understand how these individuals are involved in the MS formation. The research is based on five studies, differing by evidence, as follows: one theoretical, three qualitative in the setting of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and one quantitative at a large company. Based on the findings presented in the six appended papers, the results show that empirically and conceptually, workers have been overlooked or given a passive role in the MS formation. Empirically, it is seen that workers and managers do not have a shared understanding of the underlying reasons for strategic priorities; hence, the level of strategic consensus is low. Furthermore, the level of strategic consensus varies among the different MS dimensions depending on their organisational level. Moreover, the empirical findings reveal that internal contextual factors influence the individuals’ perceptions of the MS and the possibilities for strategic consensus. Regarding the external context, the results show that major customers’ strategies influence the subcontractor SMEs’ MS formation. The usage of means of communication in the operations function has also shown to be of importance for how the MS is perceived. Conceptually, the findings indicate that the MS literature tends to treat individuals in the operations function in a deterministic manner; individuals on the shop floor are regarded as manufacturing resources. To ensure a successful MS formation process, where the patterns of the decisions made by the individuals in the operations function forms the MS, the view on human nature within the MS requires a more voluntaristic approach. This research suggests to view the MS formation as an iterative “patterning process” which builds on a reciprocal relationship between workers and managers. The introduction of the patterning process contributes to the research on MS formation by explaining the perception range within the hierarchical levels, by re-defining the hierarchical levels included in the MS formation and by detailing the activities in the MS formation.

    Purpose – Strategic consensus between operators and managers is an important means to accomplish a successful manufacturing strategy (MS) process. Previous studies largely left out individual operators from this concept. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to empirically examine the level of strategic consensus on the MS within the operations function, that is, the operators’ and managers’ perceptions of MS.

    Design/methodology/approach – Interviews were conducted with both operators and managers at three small and medium-sized enterprises in Sweden. The MS dimensions were selected based on previous research; the data was analysed by using thematic coding.

    Findings – The study shows that the levels of strategic consensus on the MS vary among companies. Even when strategic consensus exists between operators and managers, their underlying reasons often differ. Furthermore, the levels of strategic consensus vary among MS dimensions. The companies’ usage of information-sharing channels, along with their size and position in the supply chain, can be important for the level of strategic consensus.

    Originality/value – This paper contributes to the body of knowledge in three ways. First, it expands the scope of the MS dimensions under study, thus offering a stronger, resource-based perspective on MS and strategic consensus than what earlier studies showed. Second, it goes beyond the management level by including both managers and operators as the unit of analysis. Third, compared to previous research, it focuses on a new context and is based on indepth case studies.

    The paper provides a perspective on why employee flexibility is critical to manufacturing in the changing industrial landscape, how this links to efforts of digitalisation and automation in operations, and what opportunities and constraints this may have for achieving social sustainability. First, employee flexibility should be regarded at both horisontal and vertical dimensions. Second, responding to digitalisation of manufacturing requires both horisontal and vertical type of employee flexibility. Third, digitalization should relate more firmly employee flexibility, and too even greater extent to social sustainability. Employee flexibility can bridge the gap between digitalisation and social responsibility.

    This paper joins the discussion on the need for trade-offs among competitive priorities in manufacturing strategy (MS) and builds on earlier works on strategic consensus on MS by addressing the purpose to examine the level of strategic consensus between different organisational levels regarding the competitive priorities quality, delivery, flexibility and cost. Survey data from 96 employees at one Swedish assembly plant show that the employees rank the priorities significantly different. Further, white collar workers rank six of the 16 studied competitive priority abilities significantly higher than blue collar workers do.

    The manufacturing strategy (MS) field has largely focused on the MS content, and not so much on the people dimension of MS or on the process of bringing the MS out in organizations. Within companies, there is often a lack of a joint view of MS; different hierarchical levels view the strategy differently. There is a need to ensure a joint view within companies to assure strategic commitment. The MS falls short if the ideas it incorporates do not materialize into practice as intended. Therefore, this research originated in the idea that the people in manufacturing companies seldom have their voices heard in strategic discussions or in academic debate. In this thesis, individuals’ perceptions of MS are the focus. Hence, the purpose is to investigate operators’ and managers’ perceptions of MS in order to understand possibilities for a joint view of MS. This research was conducted through three studies. Two empirical studies collected data through interviews with operators and managers at Swedish metalworking small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The third study was theoretical and included a literature review where MS literature was analyzed from a behavioral operations (BO) perspective. The findings show that the people dimension in MS is not well developed. Theoretically, a gap exists between the view on people adopted in the BO field and the view on people in the MS literature. In the MS literature there are indicators of a deterministic view of human nature; individuals on the shop floor are viewed as manufacturing resources. Empirically, the findings show that operators’ and managers’ perceptions of MS are affected by many factors. These factors are, e.g., related to intra- versus inter-organizational MS dimensions, the operators as individuals, communication of MS, differences between CEOs and production managers, shift work, and mental distances between hierarchical levels. This research contributes to the work with MS at manufacturing companies by categorizing factors that influence movement towards a joint view of MS. Further, this research contributes to a developed people dimension within the MS field. It offers a viewpoint that indicates the importance of addressing operators and managers as individuals and to viewing the connection between operators and managers a bilateral relationship rather than as a unilateral link. This implies that this thesis strives for a more subjectivist approach to human nature than what traditionally has been the case in MS literature.

    This paper explicates the contextual factors influencing the workers’ perceptions of the MS, and hence, the possibilities for a joint view between workers and managers. The paper is based on in depth interviews with 16 workers in four metal working SMEs in Sweden. The contextual factors can be viewed at two levels: individual and organisational. This paper contributes to richer descriptions of what the individual and organisational contextual factors incorporate, and to the clarification of the important role communication channels plays for the possibilities of a joint view. Thereby, contributing to increased knowledge on the manufacturing strategy formation process.

    Strategic concensus in SMEs: Behavioral operations perspective on manufacturing strategy2013Conference paper (Refereed)

    Previous manufacturing strategy studies have to a limited extent incorporated the people dimension emphasized in behavioral operations field. This paper aims at empirically examine the link between management’s and operators’ perceptions of MS, i.e. vertical and horizontal strategic consensus within the operations function, from a behavioral operations perspective. Interviews with both managers and operators at three Swedish metalworking SMEs were conducted. The results show, in comparison to earlier research, a higher level of strategic consensus. Strategic consensus is primarily seen within the intra-organizational dimensions. Lack of consensus seems to primarily be caused by poor communication about strategic objectives and long term plans. The paper, by emphasizing the people dimension of manufacturing strategy, contributes to increased knowledge about strategic consensus at SMEs and the importance of strategic commitment and strategic consensus for a successful MS process.

    The thesis has been written as a part of the Bachelor degree in Industrial engineering and management at the School of Engineering in Jönköping. The work is focused on the part of Husqvarna AB’s supply chain that is associated with the lorry transports to Italy. Husqvarna AB has approximately ten Italian customers, whose delivery patterns have been studied from January 2007 to July 2008. Some of the customers have a low delivery frequency and small amounts of goods that they therefore have not been fully analyzed in this report. The main focus has been put on the two largest customers.

    The main goal of this thesis is to analyze how the lorry transports to Italy can be made more cost-effective with maintained or increased customer service level. In addition, it is intended that the result of this thesis will become applicable for the transports to the rest of the European countries. To structure the work and to reach the main goal, it has been fragmented into three sub targets.

    Today, Husqvarna AB works with two fixed departure days per week to Italy. Exceptionally there can be more frequent deliveries in case of enough goods to fill up a lorry. The costs for the transports are regulated by the agreement Huqvarna AB has with DHL. To reach the result of this thesis a data collection was made as an introduction, to gather all the information regarding the shipments which had departed during the investigated period. Each customer was put in a separate Excel sheet, where the costs were calculated for the current situation as well as for the different solutions that were introduced by the authors. To assure that consideration was taken to the customer service a structured written interview was distributed to representatives from the two largest customers.

    The result shows that changes can take place in several steps. It is estimated that the most cost-effective solution would give a reduction of the transportation costs by over 40 percent. However, the authors do not hold this solution as implementable, as it gives a too low delivery frequency to keep an acceptable customer service level. The alternative which the authors would like to recommend the thesis submitter Husqvarna AB gives a reduction of the transportation costs by 13.7 percent and involves lowering the delivery frequency to departures once a week, or more often if there are enough goods to fill a lorry. Furthermore the solution implies a usage of the rules in the agreement with DHL, which allows mixed consignments to customers within the same zone. The authors do not think that this solution will affect the customer service level in a noticeable way, but if further research should show that that is the case, the authors have stressed a number of small changes in the discussion chapter. They do for example concern improvements of packing and loading.

    Today's global competitiveness urges SMMEs to pay attention to their MS process. The purpose of this case study at a Swedish SMME, mainly conducted through interviews with production-related staff: staff with direct connection to everyday production work, is to explore their perception of the MS content. The study shows that communication is the main obstacle for production-related staff's perception of the MS. Their perception is diverse and based on a multitude of factors, such as employment period, organizational belonging, and the employee's own interest. Several problem areas are identified and need to be investigated further.

    This report processes the product development regarding a portable charging station for handheld devices. It has been done in collaboration with the R&D-department on Thule Group. The thesis aims to project an idea for a product in the Bags & Outdoor segment and will be presented through CAD and renderings.The fundamental problem behind the report is that the lack of charging possibilities when hiking in nature, which can lead to concerns that the device’s battery will discharge. This can be fatal in the event of an accident where rescue services should be invoked. It is also important that the charging station can perform as a protective casing to withstand external shocks and ingress of dust and moisture.The thesis background stems from a pilot study where a market analysis has been made to create an understanding of what the market wants form this kind of product. To find possible market segments a competitive analysis has been made. The theory has been found in course literature where methods that are known to the authors have been chosen. Furthermore, a concept development has been done where sketches and simple CAD have generated relevant decision matrices. This is to see which concepts are feasible or not.The thesis has resulted in a protective hard case that also charges the device through a wired connection. The power supply comes from an external charger or solar panel that is mounted on or inside the backpack. The hard case is suspended around the neck with a loop, where in the back, an USB-port is located to simplify charging capability.This thesis will serve as a basis for further development of the product. To realize the product, Thule must develop production documentation and make an adequate analysis regarding IP-classification and materials.

    For many retailers, manufacturers, and wholesalers, inventory is their single largest investments of corporate assets. Problems such as stock-outs and bullwhip effect due to sales fluctuation and poor visibility are normal for manufactures. Unnecessary activities, in the purchasing process internally and externally, such as double order handling, cost both money and time.

    It is widely known that firms no longer can compete effectively in isolation of their suppliers and other entities. The future success of many businesses depends on co-operation and the co-ordination of efforts; making Supply Chain Management important. JIT and VMI are two of the philosophies that have been used to update supply chain relationships and management. By recognising your own supply weaknesses, the need for a supply strategy and a purchasing portfolio which classify suppliers emerges.

    There is an interest in examining what possible benefits and drawbacks, JIT and VMI collaboration can bring and how they differ from each other. In order to have a successful collaboration and implementation, it is important to know what basis to choose suppliers on and understand what needs to be in place, internally and externally, before starting either a JIT or VMI relationship with different suppliers.

    An inductive method was used in order to transform the literature review into a case study research. Explanatory and exploratory strategy was combined as well as qualitative and quantitative data collection such as oral interviews and written questionnaires. The case study was carried out at an accessory purchasing department at a large production company referred to as the “Focal company” in this thesis. Also, participating in the study were selected suppliers of the Focal company.

    The literature review and the case study data was analysed which led to the results that:

    • JIT and VMI can shorten lead time, improve quality and relationships if used properly, otherwise it can lead to increased inventory levels.

    • Key factors for enabeling JIT and VMI are common goals, management commitment, accurate information and suitable software systems.

    • Suitable suppliers for JIT and VMI are companies that have equal dependency and/or have interdependency and are willing and able to contribute to the competitive advantage of the buying firm.

    • Supplier selection criteria are price, quality, delivery, flexibility, reliability organizational culture, structure and strategy.

    • Implementation of JIT is not an option today at the Focal company.

    • With a few IT-system updates, a little bit of education and training the Focal company and most of the suppliers in this study are ready for VMI.

    • Because of the good balance of power and dependence in the relationships between the Focal company and their suppliers there is a good chance of a successful outcome.

    • The Focal company’s rating criteria are well correlating with the literatures findings, which further support that they are ready to select suppliers for integrated relationships.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate how to organize external manufacturing of product modules. Modularization can be used to facilitate the use of external suppliers. However, the ability to work with continuous manufacturing improvements and customization becomes more difficult due to the increasing distance between design and manufacturing. This is also confirmed by the case study done for this paper at a manufacturing company relying heavily on external suppliers. 

    In the case study we could also identify how the company handles this situation by using different solutions (facilitators), that are strategically based or influenced by the contextual situation.

    Combining internal and external manufacturing of product modules2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper considers different ways to manufacture product modules. When all product modules are manufactured externally there is a risk for diminished activity in the design/manufacturing interface, which could result in lower capacity to upgrade products according to customers’ needs. An alternative to this could be to have some own manufacturing, though there are benefits and drawbacks to consider. Own manufacturing located nearby the product design unit brings preconditions for close collaboration and spill off effects as dissemination of manufacturing knowledge to designers and informal decision-making. Though, such informal decision channels risk to eliminate the ground for long-term improvement work.
