Management of the Potential Challenges in the Consolidation Phase: A Case Study of a Scandinavian Company2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore how to manage the potential challenges organizations may face in the consolidation phase, and in order to achieve this, potential challenges need to be identified.

Methodology: The research has been performed through an abductive case study method to the subject of change management. The empirical data was gathered from semistructured interviews conducted at an international company, Company X, primarily from the electronic commerce department. The authors used a thematic analysis inspired by Boyatzis (1998) when analyzing the data.

Research Limitation: Due to the limited amount of time, the research is limited to only embrace the consolidation phase of an organizational change process. The case study includes 10 interviews from one organization, which will limit the research. The authors apply anonymity due to the company's desire; however, it is also done in order to protect the respondents from any possible harm that might derive from this study (Waldorf,2006).

Theoretical Perspective: Literature covering different but highly related areas of change management, and its relation to the consolidation phase constitutes the theoretical foundation of the thesis.

Results: The authors identified four potential challenges when consolidating change; communication, prioritize consolidation, policies and employee involvement.

Conclusion: In order for organizations to successfully manage the four identified challenges they have to increase the flow of communication, prioritize the consolidation phase, and thereby also allocate resources, which enables the employees to consolidate changes, set up clear policies for the consolidation phase and involve the employees within all levels, in order to increase the employee motivation.

Smart Beta based on ROE: is Smart Beta based on ROE a good investment2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract Background: Smart beta is one of the most popular investment strategies at the moment and projections show that the money invested in Smart Betas will continue to increase. The reason for the growing popularity is that it is a hybrid between active and passive investment. Where the Smart Beta strategy avoids the flaw of holding too many overvalued stocks in passive investing as well as reducing the management fees that comes with active investments. There are many different ways to construct a Smart beta. Several studies have been done to see if there is a possibility to create a Smart Beta based on ROE and they have all showed positive results. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if a Smart Beta based on ROE would perform better than the Swedish market. This thesis will also investigate which are the optimal weights for the Smart Beta. Method: Three different strategies are used in order to select stocks for the portfolios these portfolios are weighted in three different weightings. The performance of all portfolios are calculated through backtesting and then compared against the benchmark OMXSGI. Conclusion: The average return of the betas is higher than the comparable index, however they have taken a small amount of additional risk. The risk-adjusted measurements show that the extra risk is compensated with additional return, since the Smart Betas have higher average risk-adjusted measurement ratios. Therefore, a Smart Beta based on ROE should be created. The Last ROE strategy shows that the best returns and risk-adjusted returns and the Sharpe weighting (SW) was substantially better than the other weightings. Although, the time-horizon is relative short and it needs more research in order to make a conclusion with more certainty.

Economic Development and CO2 emissons: A comparison of High- and Middle-income economies2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between economic development and pollution in the middle- and high-income countries for the period between 1960 and 2014. The study is conducted by first testing the environmental Kuznets curve, an economic theory that income has an inverted U-shape relationship with environmental degradation. Later, the Revised environmental Kuznets curve is tested, an economic theory that countries undergoing economic development at a later period will have a lower peak of environmental degradation compared to countries undergoing economic development at an earlier period. Empirical tests of carbon dioxide (CO2) per capita and income (GDP per capita) were conducted in two different panel tests containing middle-income countries in one and high-income countries in the other. The observed relationship shows that a country's early economic development degrades the environment until what is called the turning point is reached, after which the environment improves with further economic development. Thus, the expected inverted U-shape is observed for both MIE and HIE. Furthermore, the tests tell us that the turning point for MIE is significantly lower than for HIE, which is the expected result.

Flerspråkiga barns språkutveckling i förskolan: En kvalitativ studie om hur förskollärare främjar flerspråkiga barns språkutveckling2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Children with Intellectual Disabilities and Their Perceived Participation in Everyday Life Activities: A descriptive study conducted in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Children with intellectual disabilities living in developing countries are vulnerable to participation restrictions. Few studies have been made regarding their own perspectives. Aim: To describe how children in a low income country aged 13-17 with an intellectual disability perceive their participation in everyday life activities. Method: This bachelor thesis was conducted as a descriptive study and had a quantitative approach. Participants were collected through a non-probability, goal-oriented consecutive sampling. Data were collected by using “Picture my Participation”, an instrument designed as a structured interview with quantitative questions. The data were analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics 21. Tables and diagrams were made in Microsoft Excel 2013. Result: The activity that the children participated in most frequently was “Daily routines at home for personal care (dressing, choosing clothing, hair care, brushing teeth)”. The activity that most children prioritized as most important, and they were most involved in was “Organised leisure activities”. “Services and policies” and “Social environment” were the factors seen as “Facilitators” to participation, whereas “Family attitudes” was seen as a “Barrier” to participation. Conclusion: The children perceived their participation in the prioritized activities as high and experienced few barriers in the context of participation.

Patienters psykosociala förändringar efter stroke: en litteraturöversikt2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I analysen användes Fribergs femstegsmodell.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine risk- and protective factors connected to juvenile delinquency. To accomplish this, data from the research project LoRDIA (Longitudinal Research on Development In Adolescence) will be examined, and the results will then be compared with the results from the school study done by BRÅ (The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention). The theoretical framework of this study is based on social development theory. LoRDIA:s study is carried out on 1441 adolescents attending grades 8 and 9 between the ages of 13–17 (with an age average of 14,8 years). Also, parental monitoring and its effect on risk- and protective factors are examined. Comparisons between the two studies show that there are similarities in general, where boys as well as if the parents of the adolescent are divorced/separated exhibit greater risk associated with delinquent behaviour. Both of these risk factors are connected to a lack of parental monitoring. An insufficient parental monitoring where mainly connected to if the adolescents parents were divorced/separated and the adolescent alternated between living with its parents. The study also show that the crime rates differ between the municipalities participating in the LoRDIA:s study. All results generated by this study are of value for crime prevention in social work. Further research are however required in order to concretely implement the findings in practice.

Entrepreneurship and SME Development in Transition Economies: The Case of Georgia.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

Entrepreneurship and SME development play a crucial role in speeding up the economic development of transition economies. Although entrepreneurship exists in all environments it flourishes in the conditions where it is supported. Transition economies, as well as Georgia, are characterized by inefficient framework conditions that present barriers to productive entrepreneurship and SMEs to develop and benefit the economies in their full potential.

    Purpose

The Thesis aimed at answering the following research questions:

    1)      To what extent the framework conditions necessary for promoting productive entrepreneurship and SME development exist in Georgia?

    2)      What are the perceived barriers to entrepreneurship and SME development in Georgia?

    3)      In what ways is entrepreneurship and SME development encouraged and supported in Georgia?

    Method

The thesis consists of theoretical data such as literature review, secondary data presented by previous studies, and primary data collected by conducting interviews with Georgian entrepreneurs and representatives of governmental bodies and NGOs engaged in improving a business climate in the country.

    Conclusions

The study revealed that basic framework conditions for developing entrepreneurship are present in Georgia. Although inefficiencies and institutional gaps give rise to a number of barriers to entrepreneurship and SME development. They are mostly presented by inefficient tax system and financial framework. Despite their efforts towards fostering favourable business environment, GoG, as well as NOGs could do a better job in improving an indirect support in terms of abolishing imperfections in the taxation system, as well as directly providing finance, training and effectual information flow to existing and potential businesses.

”Stick i stäv med värdeorden”: En kvalitativ fallstudie om internkommunikation kopplat till värdeord2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For several centuries, there has been a process where people's duty to work has been replaced by a demand for balance, meaning and quality for the individual at work. This change has motivated organizations to develop their employer brand, since "strong brands gain their power from within" (Parment, Dyhre & Lutz, 2017, p. 28) which requires a consistent organizational identity that is based on shared values and communication strategies (Parment, Dyhre & Lutz, 2017, p. 13–30).

Values as a means of management mean that the organization leads itself with a selected value base to achieve set goals and create a desirable corporate culture. Previous research has shown that employees who enjoy and feel proud of their workplace are a more important factor for employee motivation than financial benefits (Philipson, 2004, p. 56–58). Employees who thrive and live the culture are an important strategic tool for anchoring the culture within the organization (Falkheimer & Heide, 2007, p. 90-91). Both communication and value management can help organizations, if used properly. We chose to conduct a case study on a Swedish state-owned organization, which will be anonymous in this study. A content analysis on collected empirical data from observations, interviews and surveys was conducted to study internal communication through various communication channels, to see if the employees perceive the values as genuine and therefor if the values are used as a means of management.

The conclusion shows that the organization does not fully use value words as an instrument of management, but that the value words affect the interpersonal internal behaviour. The communication channels are used in parallel to maximize the effect of communication but since decisions are made within the organization that contradicts the values, the culture is not perceived as genuine and therefore does not function fully as a means of management, which it has the opportunity to be.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to explore the understanding of the equal sign and how the teaching about the equal sign among third grade students can be varied to be as effective as possible.  The aim will be answered trough the questions: what patterns of variation can the studied students meet and what critical aspects have the students identified. Patterns of variation means that what is critical in the teaching should be varied to become visible. Critical aspects is what students need to identify to understand what should be learned. The foundation of the study is the Variation Theory, where patterns of variation and critical aspects are central concepts.

The observations were accomplished during a third grade lesson and six students were selected for interviews about the equal sign. The result of the study shows that the students met six critical aspects during the lesson. For every critical aspect there were one or several patterns of variation that was exposed to the students. The result also states that the students who were interviewed have a relational and instrumental understanding of the equal sign. The students also have understanding of a critical aspect that they did not meet in the observed lesson, namely that all numbers have to enter in a task. Four out of six students have understanding of the critical aspect that there should be equivalence in a chain of similarities. The result also show that the students understanding of the equal sign is not dependent of that they meet patterns of variation in the teaching, but that they meet the critical aspects somehow.

    Abstract [en]

Our paper presents an empirical analysis of entrepreneurial well-being using a large-scale longitudinal household survey from the UK that tracks almost 50,000 individuals across seven waves over the period 2009–2017, as well as a number of exploratory case studies. We contribute to the existing literature by investigating how entrepreneurial well-being varies across locations along the urban-rural continuum, and across wealthy-deprived neighbourhoods. We use a Coarsened Exact Matching (CEM) approach to compare the well-being outcomes of individuals who switch into self-employment from waged employment, and show that entrepreneurial well-being, in the form of job satisfaction, is significantly higher for those living in semi-urban locations, relative to those living in urban and rural locations. We argue that semi-urban locations provide an optimal combination of ease of doing business and quality of life. Our results also show that individuals in wealthy neighbourhoods who switch into self-employment experience higher job satisfaction than otherwise comparable individuals living in materially deprived neighbourhoods, although the latter experience greater levels of life satisfaction following the switch.

Utvärdering av analysmetod för bestämning av anti-FXa aktivitet i plasma hos patienter behandlade med apixaban eller LMH2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Apixaban and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), are anticoagulants that prevent clot formation by inhibiting factor Xa. Increasingly more patients use apixaban and LMWH, for this reason the laboratory medicine at the county hospital Ryhov needs to evaluate methods of analysis for apixaban and LMWH to be able to implement the analyzes in clinical routine. Aim: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the assay method for determining anti-FXa activity in plasma in patients treated with apixaban or LMWH using chromogenic substrate method. Method: The method evaluation consisted of four steps: repeatability, intermediate precision measures, compliance with validated method and analysis of normal population. The evaluation was performed using Sysmex CS-2100 where 20 respective 40 patient samples were analyzed for apixaban and LMWH as well as 10 normal population samples. Factor Xa activity was quantitatively determined using light absorption at 405 nm.Result and discussion: Repeatability and intermediate precision showed low CV. Patient samples showed consistent results with reference values from other laboratories where r2 for apixaban and LMWH were 0.95. Deviant results may be due to measurement errors or confusion between samples. Analysis of normal population showed that values were below the lowest reliable value. Conclusion: Evaluation of the analysis method apixaban and LMWH at Ryhov's laboratory showed good results, which confirms that the assay method can be used in clinical routine.

Upper Limb Kinematics of Handwriting among Children with and without Developmental Coordination Disorder2022In: Sensors, E-ISSN 1424-8220, Vol. 22, no 23, article id 9224Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) often experience difficulties with handwriting legibility and speed. This study investigates the relationship between handwriting and upper limb kinematics to characterize movement patterns of children with DCD and typically developing (TD) children.

Methods: 30 children with and without DCD matched for age, gender, and parent education were compared across handwriting abilities using a standardized handwriting assessment of both copied and dictated tasks (A-A Handwriting). The 3D motion capture system (Qualysis) was used to analyze upper limb kinematics and characterize movement patterns during handwriting and contrasted with written output.

Results: Children with DCD wrote fewer legible letters in both copying and dictation. Children with DCD also showed poor automatization of key writing concepts. Atypical wrist postures were associated with reduced legibility for children with DCD (F (1,27) 4.71, p = 0.04, p = 0.04, p-η2  0.15); whereas for TD children, better legibility was associated with greater variations in movement speed, particularly of the wrist (rho = −0.578, p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Results reflect different movement parameters influencing handwriting in children with DCD. An improved understanding of the movement characteristics during handwriting of these children may assist intervention design.

How does Military Experience Affect the Perception of Recruiters in Swedish Civilian Jobs?: A Case Study about Swedish Civilian Job Recruiters2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Under the United Nations’ proposal of downsizing military plans for peacekeeping, countries are continuously decreasing their military personnel size, resulting in a global military personnel decrease of 10% in twenty years, which is equivalent to a decrease of 3 million soldiers. Sweden, on the other hand, decreased its military personnel by 15% in just one year (2020), leaving these military personnel for the quest of new careers in civilian jobs. The purpose of this study is to understand how military experience affects the perception of recruiters in Swedish Civilian Job. This study will be able to help Swedish individuals with military experience who are switching careers to civilian jobs to understand the perception of recruiters on them and provide guidance for successful employment. For recruiters, this study can be used as a measurement model of how to accurately evaluate veterans, which can more effectively translate expertise for organizations, and help to enrich their human resources. This paper conducts a qualitative study, collecting responses from thirteen Swedish civilian recruiters by the method of semi-structured interviews to ensure effective data collection. Through the analysis of the data by NVivo coding program, and further analysis by the researchers, the theoretical model is established and discussed. The findings show that military experience does affect the perception of recruiters in swedish civilian jobs. The effect is overall mirthful and positive because military experience is perceived to affect personality and skills positively. However, the findings also showed that in the eyes of recruiters, military experience may generate some obstacles to employment if the individual did not obtain other qualities or sets, such as education, job experience before their military service, good communication skills, and emotional intelligence.

Crisis Management in The Swedish Restaurant Industry: A multiple case study about the reflections of seven restaurant owners in the city of Jönköping - from a post Covid-19 perspective2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Crisis management has become a highly relevant topic due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, restaurants have been forced to implement new business strategies and tactics to mitigate its impact. For restaurants, it quickly became important to adapt and apply the right strategy to survive which created a unique opportunity to form an understanding of what actual strategic choices restaurants have applied during a pandemic.

Purpose: The purpose of this study aims at creating an understanding of how Swedish restaurants in the city of Jönköping have been able to survive the pandemic, more specifically, identify what crisis strategies and tactics restaurant owners have utilized.

Method: The aim of this paper was pursued by a qualitative research method with an inductive approach. In order to investigate the research question, a multiple case study has been conducted. Data have been collected through semi-structured interviews from seven different restaurant owners that form the basis of the empirical data.

Conclusions: The conclusions revealed that the Covid-19 pandemic had a negative effect on the restaurants and that they had to make changes in their activities in order to stay in business. The empirical findings demonstrated these changes as three core strategies utilized through different tactics in order to cope with the pandemic. Given that unexpected events can happen in the future at any time, it is crucial for managers to learn from the past and implement different strategies in their business and thereby successfully adjust to the diverse external environment.

External Requirements and Internal Enablers in the Responsive Supply Chain Management: A Case Study of Nike’s Responsive Supply Chain2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

Responsive Supply Chain (RSC) has been in the middle of attention nowadays, companies invest massively in their supply chains to adapt to dynamic changes in the market. Examples of prominent changes are technological advances and digitalization happening across various supply chain channels. Almost all businesses and managers are now challenged to build a RSC that better copes with these changes. Therefore, it is essential to explore the external requirements in the market that push business towards adopting a RSC strategy. Along with external requirements, internal enablers are also defining how efficiently supply chain are capable of implementing such a strategy.

    Purpose:

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the external requirements of a responsive supply chain strategy. Furthermore, it will investigate the internal enablers necessarily to efficiently respond to those external requirements, and finally explore the challenges managers encounter while implementing a RSC model.

    Method:

A qualitative method has been performed through a single case study analysis. Semi-structured interviews with different managerial levels are conducted to collect data from Nike, as a main research case. A content analysis method has been used to develop an adaptive model in order to fulfil our research purpose.

    Conclusion:

Our analysis showed that consumer behavior and social media played a significant role as external requirements. Change management is a key internal enabler for Nike to adapt their current set-up to further develop their responsive strategy. Information technology, resistance to change and trends in the market are amongst the key challenges while building a RSC model.

Drivers leading Olympic Athletes to Entrepreneurial Opportunities: An Analysis of the US Olympic Team from Tokyo 2020: A bachelor thesis that analyzes the drivers towards entrepreneurship amongst US Olympic athletes with a qualitative research design.2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The authors have observed that Olympic athletes of Team USA supplement their income, or finance themselves entirely, through entrepreneurial opportunities. This study focuses on Olympic Athletes from the United States - with a limitation to members of the US Olympic Rowing Team that competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Unbeknownst to many, athletes from Team USA, and Olympians globally, do not receive compensation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete at the Olympic Games. Instead, US Olympians receive a monthly stipend from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) ranging between $1000 to $2000 US Dollars. Provided this information, the authors were interested in identifying whether their financial situation, or any other drivers, made them more likely to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities.

Purpose: The aim of this thesis is to identify and understand the drivers which led US Olympic athletes to improve their financial situation while on the US Olympic team.

Method: This thesis focuses primarily on qualitative data gathered from interviews with eight members of the United States Olympic Rowing Team who competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. To fulfill our purpose, the authors elected to utilize the explorative study framework, with a purposive sampling and following an inductive reasoning approach. Moreover, the primary data from our interview is collected through semi-structured interviews, which were conducted through (Zoom) virtual video conferencing calls.

Findings: From our interviews with members of the US Olympic Rowing Team who competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, we have identified six (6) common factors shared amongst our interviewees – leading them to pursue one or more entrepreneurial opportunity/ies. Those common factors were: (1) The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s Stipend for athletes does not fully finance their monthly expenditure; (2) the athletes’ recognition of their rising brand value; (3) the unpredictability of their training and competition schedules; (4) the pressure on athletes for professional work experience; (5) an interest in Entrepreneurship; and (6) their requirements for flexible employment.

Conclusion: After weighing our findings, the authors would agree that the most compelling driver to pursue entrepreneurship was the need for an additional income to supplement their USOPC Stipend. However, the authors must also add that these drivers cannot be individually held responsible for the pursuance of an entrepreneurial opportunity – to the contrary, the authors would propose that the most reasonable interpretation is that US Olympians are pursuing entrepreneurship as a result of a combination of the aforementioned drivers influencing their lives – as shown by all of our interviewees being affected by three or more of the identified drivers.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a qualitative content analysis that problematizes views on controversial issues in teaching. The purpose of this study is to analyze the pedagogical strategies proposed by research in the teaching of controversial issues. The qualitative method gives me the opportunity to describe and examine the content of the text. This study is based on eight scientific articles and the information on these articles are not meant to be generalize controversial issues in teaching, since the articles do not represent all researchers' opinions on which strategies are most suitable in a classroom. This study problematizes the articles in relation to terms of prejudice, multiculturalism and diversity. These terms will help to explain why controversial issues occur and why it is important to have an open and inclusive environment in the classroom. The result shows that some teachers, in the research in question, discuss controversial issues from an ethnocentric perspective and conflicts are explained by ethnic diversity. The result also shows that some teachers embrace different strategies to meet the controversial questions that occurs in the classroom. One strategy that the articles highlight is the teacher’s willingness to raise different perspectives for nuancing the image of Islam and Judaism. Another strategy that the articles highlight is to tone down the conflict perspective by highlighting similarities between the Abrahamic religions. Furthermore, the results show that there is a controversial perception among the students in the research that Muslims are portrayed as terrorists, religious fanatics in the media. For this reason, students need to be taught controversial issues to balance the one-sided picture of religions that the media provides, where the teachers uphold an intersectional perspective in their teaching.

    Abstract [en]

    Summary

Background: Diabetes type-1 is an autoimmune disease and one of the most common chronic diseases in Sweden. Diabetes type-1 can be developed at any age, but usually appears during childhood and adolescence. Living with the disease implicates being responsible for their self-care.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe the young adult’s experiences of living with diabetes type-1, based on Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory.

Method: This study is a qualitative study with deductive approach. The study is based on three blogs. Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory was used in this study.

Results: The relationship with family and other diabetics are perceived to be a great support and can serve as an aid in self-care. Self-care can be difficult to achieve and sometimes they can experience that planning and structure be in vain. According to the individuals, it is important not to let the disease limit the social life. There is a major ignorance of diabetes type-1 in the society which leads to insecurity and lack of trust. Despite an environment of supportive people, individuals with diabetes type-1 can experience loneliness.

Conclusion: An insight of young adult’s experiences of living with diabetes type-1 is important for the nurse because of the ability to reduce conflicts between nurse and patient and thereby improve conditions for a successful self-care.

    Abstract [en]

International studies have shown that students perform equally well in both fiction and factual reading. Although the studies show this result pupils, when they start grade 4, have difficulties in reading fact-based texts. For this reason, the present study is about how teachers work with expository texts as tools for developing reading comprehension. The study is limited to teachers in grades 3 and 4. The study's research questions are as follows:

    • How do the teachers select expository texts for teaching?
    • What opportunities and difficulties do the teachers experience in using expository texts?
    • How do the teachers support their student’s development towards a bigger reading comprehension, with the help of expository texts?

To obtain the results of the study, a survey and an interview study were conducted. The result shows that teachers mainly choose teaching material when choosing expository texts. The result shows that the two most common difficulties with expository texts for students are to understand topic-specific words and the content of expository texts. Teachers support their students' reading development in different ways. A large proportion use reading comprehension strategies in connection with reading expository texts, especially in grade 4. However, expository texts are primarily seen as a tool for learning content.

Somaliska migranters upplevelser av den svenska arbetsmarknaden: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om somaliska migranters upplevelser av integration på svensk arbetsmarknaden i Jönköpings kommun2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

After Somalia's civil war in 1991, several Somalis migrated to various countries, including Sweden, to obtain better social and economic conditions. People from Somalia migrated due to conflicts, wars, environmental problems and more that made it difficult for them to stay in Somalia. In this study, Somali migrants' experiences of searching for a job and work in Sweden are examined. The study’s question concerns how Somali migrants experience jobseeker and the Swedish labor market, what opportunities they experience that the Swedish labor market and finding a job contributed to, and what challenges they have encountered.

In this study, a qualitative method is applied in the form of semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis with an inductive approach was used to analyze the collected material. Seven Somali migrants participated in the study, of which five out of seven are working. The other two Somali migrants attend Swedish for Immigrants (SFI). All seven informants were in Jönköping municipality when this study was investigated.

The results show that Somali migrants feel that the job search took longer than expected, but that social contact networks and Arbetsförmedlingen have contributed to their employment. The opportunities Somali migrants experience from the Swedish labor market are that their independence has been strengthened, the possibility of self-sufficiency, good economic conditions and social relations. Challenges they face in the labor market are lack of language skills as well as difficulties in finding a job due to their ethnic and religious identity, which they feel is the reason they have been discriminated against.

    Abstract [en]

Case studies and modeling of logistics systems are the basis for the formulation of the content and structure of a reference model for the organization and management of Value Networks as a higher stage of integrated development of supply chains. The definition of a mathematical model for the balance of the Value Network can reveal the characteristics and principles of organization and management of Value Networks. The instrument obtained enables supply chains to assess their level of development and identify the characteristics that should be developed to reach the concept of Value Network, which is based on knowledge development and environmental integration as supports of the same and its competitive position in the global market.

Proper integration into the model of environmental factors ensures that Value Networks are inserted into the objectives of promoting sustainable development. The current concept of logistics flow is extended to incorporate within it the exchange of energy, resources and impacts to the environment.

The research methods used were based on a combination of study and experimentation of cases and the conceptual and mathematical modeling of systems.

Development of Web-based Health Care Services in Swedish County Councils: Strategies, Usage and Challenges2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

eHealth has been adopted by many countries across the globe in response to cut down cost and improve the quality of life. Sweden has been engaged in providing web-based health care services for its citizens for the past decade and county councils have the responsibility to develop them. The main aim of this thesis is to present answers to the following research questions:What strategies (formal and informal) guide the development of web-based health care services provided by the Swedish county councils? What barriers exist in relation to the development and usage of web-based health care services provided by the county councils from the viewpoint of their IT leaders? From the perspective of IT leaders in the county councils and in their capacity to develop, manage and monitor their organizations‘ website content, which web-based health care services are mostly accessed by users and what age group utilize the services most? The thesis is an exploratory research conducted through a survey based on a mail questionnaire that was posted to all 21 county councils in Sweden with 18 councils responding. The results show that all county councils have formally adopted the National eHealth Strategy to guide the development of web-based health care services and some have other informal strategies as well. Technological barriers, resistance to use the web-based services and changing business process to integrate ICTs have been identified by IT leaders as major challenges that impede the development of web-based health care services in Swedish county councils. Swedish citizens more frequently access prescription renewal and booking and cancellation of appointments than other available web-based health care services which depicts a trend towards the use of advanced interactive services than basic information seeking, and people in the ages of 46 to 55 have been identified as the frequent users of web-based health care services according to IT leaders from the county councils.

    Abstract [en]

Telemedicine has been acknowledged to improve the quality of healthcare. However, many telemedicine services fail beyond the pilot phase. A literature review on business model components for telemedicine services was conducted. Based on specified inclusion criteria, 22 publications were included in the review. To facilitate the analysis of literature, a business model framework with value as its central focus was proposed. Improvement in quality, efficiency and accessibility of care were identified to be the outcomes of telemedicine, with patients and healthcare personnel being the main users of the services, which are delivered through home, institutional and community-based care. Patients, health providers, vendors, payers and government agencies are actors involved in the delivery of telemedicine services, which require investments in resources like videoconferencing technologies, home monitoring devices and other IT infrastructure. Subscriptions, reimbursements and pay-per-use revenue streams were identified as feasible for commercializing telemedicine services.

Effects of a Home-based Monitoring Device on Innovation in Healthcare Delivery: A Pilot Study2013In: Information Systems and Technology for Organizations in a Networked Society / [ed] Tomayess Issa, Pedro Isaias and Piet Kommers, Hershey, PA, USA: IGI Global, 2013, p. 316-334Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Information technology has been suggested to improve patient health outcomes and reduce the burden of care. In this study, we explored the effects of collaborative innovation between caregivers and patients on healthcare delivery as a consequence of the use of an IT-based device by patients with atrial fibrillation. Two cardiologists and two nurses were interviewed while questionnaires were mailed to 75 patients querying them about the use of a home-based ECG for remote monitoring. Findings indicated that the caregivers considered the device to enhance the quality of clinical decision-making. Patients found the device to be useful and felt more involved in their own care. However, the introduction of the device presented work overload for the caregivers. Thus, the facilitation of timely diagnostics and decision-making were not realized. IT is an enabler through which innovation in healthcare delivery can be realized, but it must be integrated into work practices to realize potential benefits.

    Abstract [en]

Information technology has been suggested to improve patient health outcomes and reduce healthcare cost. This study explored the business model and effects of collaborative innovation between caregivers and patients on healthcare delivery through remote patient monitoring by interviewing caregivers and surveying atrial fibrillation patients. Findings indicate that remote monitoring enhanced early detection of potential risks and quality of clinical decision-making with patients feeling more empowered and involved in their own care. The remote monitoring system which consisted of a home-based ECG and a web-based service and was offered free to patients, brought together caregivers, patients, service provider and the government as actors. The introduction of remote monitoring increased the workload of caregivers and facilitation of timely diagnostics and decision-making were not realized. IT is an enabler of innovation in healthcare, but it must be integrated into work processes with a viable business model to realize potential benefits and sustain it.

The impact of digital technologies on vocational education and training needs An exploratory study in the German food industry2019In: Education + Training, ISSN 0040-0912, E-ISSN 1758-6127, Vol. 61, no 2, p. 222-233Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - Currently, the hype surrounding digitalization proclaims that the way in which companies create and capture value will change dramatically. Companies that adjust their business models to embrace digital technologies will need different skill sets and competences. Current research tends to focus on the impact of digital technologies on corporations or more generally the labor market, but the authors lack detailed insights into how companies perceive this development to influence their needs regarding employee qualifications. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore how companies perceive the impact of digital technologies on the education and training needs of current and future employees.

Design/methodology/approach - This study draws on eight case studies from the food industry. It focuses on one occupation certified within the German “dual system” of vocational education and training (VET), the machine and plant operator with focus on food technology.

Findings - The findings suggest that the impact of different digital technologies on employees’ job positions, working tasks and training needs is carefully considered in decisions regarding the implementation of digital technologies. Despite some company- specific contingencies, the perceived implications for VET needs are largely similar across the sample.

Originality/value - This study draws attention to the importance of reviewing VET needs in relation to the decision of implementing digital technologies.

Entrepreneurial orientation – an overlooked theoretical concept for studying media firms2020In: Nordic Journal of Media Management, E-ISSN 2597-0445, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 7-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Current changes in the media industries not only provide a range of new business opportunities for entrepreneurial start-ups, they also force legacy media firms to engage in corporate entrepreneurship and (re-)develop their entrepreneurial orientation as part of their strategic renewal. In recent years, media entrepreneurship has emerged as an area of study within media business studies, but it still lacks theoretical anchoring. While in mainstream entrepreneurship research entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has developed into a highly prominent theoretical concept, it has been largely overlooked for the study of media firms to date. This paper introduces entrepreneurial orientation to media business studies. It characterizes EO’s different dimensions and reviews relevant studies, and then illustrates the dimensions of the EO concept by drawing on the case example of a European online publisher. The case shows how different dimensions of EO are at play in the media firm and how the relevance of these dimensions is not stable over time, but in constant flux. Such process perspective on EO is outlined as a major future research opportunity for media entrepreneurship studies.

Internationalization competence of SMEs2011Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Export has a positive impact on economic growth, and exporting companies often achieve a higher level of productivity than non-exporting companies. Most companies in Sweden are small, and it is of vital importance for the Swedish economy that they successfully develop and grow. In a small home-market economy like Sweden, an important direction for growth is to expand internationally. But many companies do not dare to internationalize due to a perceived lack of competence. This report aims at providing a comprehensive overview of academic research related to different kinds of competences relevant for the internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The overview leads into recommendations to SMEs regarding what kind of issues they might want to keep in mind when preparing for international business activities, e.g. to develop an appropriate set of resources and competences. In addition, implications relevant to policy-makers are derived from the literature overview.
