    Abstract [en]

    We review and discuss the literature on small firm growth with an intention to provide a useful vantage point for new research studies regarding this important phenomenon. We first discuss conceptual and methodological issues that represent critical choices for those who research growth and which make it challenging to compare results from previous studies. The substantial review of past research is organized into four sections representing two smaller and two larger literatures. The first of the latter focuses on internal and external drivers of small firm growth. Here we find that much has been learnt and that many valuable generalizations can be made. However, we also conclude that more research of the same kind is unlikely to yield much. While interactive and non-linear effects may be worth pursuing it is unlikely that any new and important growth drivers or strong, linear main effects would be found. The second "large" literature deals with organizational life-cycles or stages of development. While deservedly criticized for unwarranted determinism and weak empirics this type of approach addresses problems of high practical and also theoretical relevance, and should not be shunned by researchers. We argue that with a change in the fundamental assumptions and improved empirical design, research on the organizational and managerial consequences of growth is an important line of inquiry. With this, we overlap with one of the "smaller" literatures, namely studies focusing on the effects of growth. We argue that studies too often assume that growth equals success. We advocate instead the use of growth as an intermediary variable that influences more fundamental goals in ways that should be carefully examined rather than assumed. The second "small" literature distinguishes between different modes or forms of growth, including, e.g., organic vs. acquisition-based growth, and international expansion. We note that modes of growth is an important topic that has been under studied in the growth literature, whereas in other branches of research aspects of it may have been studied intensely, but not primarily from a growth perspective. In the final section we elaborate on ways forward for research on small firm growth. We point at rich opportunities for researchers who look beyond drivers of growth, where growth is viewed as a homogenous phenomenon assumed to unambiguously reflect success, and instead focus on growth as a process and a multi-dimensional phenomenon, as well as on how growth relates to more fundamental outcomes.

    Longitudinal panel studies of large, random samples of business start-ups captured at the pre-operational stage allow researchers to address core issues for entrepreneurship research, namely, the processes of creation of new business ventures as well as their antecedents and outcomes. Here, we perform a methods-orientated review of all 83 journal articles that have used this type of data set, our purpose being to assist users of current data sets as well as designers of new projects in making the best use of this innovative research approach. Our review reveals a number of methods issues that are largely particular to this type of research. We conclude that amidst exemplary contributions, much of the reviewed research has not adequately managed these methods challenges, nor has it made use of the full potential of this new research approach. Specifically, we identify and suggest remedies for context-specific and interrelated methods challenges relating to sample definition, choice of level of analysis, operationalization and conceptualization, use of longitudinal data and dealing with various types of problematic heterogeneity. In addition, we note that future research can make further strides towards full utilization of the advantages of the research approach through better matching (from either direction) between theories and the phenomena captured in the data, and by addressing some under-explored research questions for which the approach may be particularly fruitful.

    The Comprehensive Australian Study of Entrepreneurial Emergence (CAUSEE) is a research programme that aims to uncover the factors that initiate, hinder and facilitate the process of emergence of new economic activities and organizations. It is widely acknowledged that entrepreneurship is one of the most important forces shaping changes in a country’s economic landscape (Baumol 1968; Birch 1987; Acs 1999). An understanding of the process by which new economic activity and business entities emerge is vital (Gartner 1993; Sarasvathy 2001). An important development in the study of ‘nascent entrepreneurs’ and ‘firms in gestation’ was the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) (Gartner et al. 2004) and its extensions in Argentina, Canada, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Yet while PSED I is an important first step towards systematically studying new venture emergence, it represents just the beginning of a stream of nascent venture studies – most notably PSED II is currently being undertaken in the US (2005– 10) (Reynolds and Curtin 2008).

    Abstract [en]

    Scott A. Shane is the 2009 winner of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. In this article we discuss and analyze Shane’s most important contributions to the field of entrepreneurship. His contribution is extraordinarily broad in scope, which makes it difficult to pinpoint one or a few specifics that we associate with Shane’s scholarship. Instead, they can be summarized in the following three points. First, he has influenced what we view as central aspects of entrepreneurship. Shane has been a leading figure in redirecting the focus on entrepreneurship research itself. Second, he has influenced how we view entrepreneurship. Shane’s research is arguably theory driven and it applies and develops theoretical lenses that greatly improve our understanding of entrepreneurship. Third, he has contributed to how we conduct entrepreneurship research. Shane has been a forerunner in examining relevant units of analysis that are difficult to sample; research designs and databases specifically designed for studying entrepreneurial processes; and sophisticated analytical methods. This has contributed to advancing the methodological rigor of the field. Summing them up, the contributions are very impressive indeed.

    This qualitative study sheds light on the nexus between social capital resources and CEO perceptions of competitive advantages and disadvantages in family firms. Drawing on a rich body of empirical evidence, the analysis shows that CEO perceptions differ depending on the owner-family’s degree of emotional attachment to or detachment from the business, emphasizing how the interactions between the family and the business system play a key role in shaping the CEO’s perceptions of competitive advantages and disadvantages in a family firm.

    Endogenous growth theory suggests that technological knowledge stimulates growth, yet the micro-foundations of this process remain obscure. Knowledge spillover theory posits that growth is contingent on the technology dependence of industries, forming the landscape for entrepreneurs to launch and grow ventures. We investigate these theoretical contingencies with two research questions using comprehensive employee-employer data documenting the science and technology labor force in Sweden. First, do industries with a greater need for new technology-based entrepreneurship grow disproportionately faster than other industries?     Previous research has shown that the discourse on womanhood is in conflict with that of entrepreneurship. This qualitative study examines how women construct their identities differently, finding that some of them perceive dissonance between womanhood and entrepreneurship discourses whereas others do not. The results indicate specific ways of constructing gender identity which result in gendered practices: how women act as entrepreneurs by ‘doing’ and ‘redoing’ gender. Since identity construction is contextually produced, other variables intersect with gender in establishing women’s status position. Women with higher status, engage in ‘redoing’ gender, trying to add value to it. The results offer new insights for those interested in promoting women entrepreneurs, by illustrating how gendered practices are used as strategic devices in doing business. In this regard, we argue that stories concerning women’s repertoire of business practices allow us to challenge the taken-for-granted assumptions of gender neutrality regarding typical business behaviour and entrepreneurship.

    Abstract [en]

    Problem: Former research focuses a lot on adoption factors, to answer which factors do SMEs consider but not to focus on the outcomes of adopting e-commerce to your business. The question is, if SMEs that are not using e-commerce fall behind in the development of their growth when compared to others that have applied e-commerce in their strategy. Despite that there has been an increasing amount of literature on SME performance over the last couple of years, big gaps regarding understanding the outcomes of e-commerce adoption remains.

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to extend the current existing research, by bringing an understanding of the outcomes of e-commerce adoption within Swedish SMEs in the retailing industry with no more than 249 employees.

    Method: The study was conducted through a qualitative method with an abductive approach. The qualitative technique used was semi-structured interviews on five Swedish SMEs within the retailing industry that was questioned how their businesses have been influenced by the e-commerce adoption in forms of organizational processes, success factors and drivers and barriers.

    Results: The findings from the empirical results showed regarding organizational processes that Swedish SMEs do not always reduce their costs of an e-commerce adoption since it is a complex and risk-taking process where security must be dealt with, which means high investment costs. Furthermore, Swedish SMEs increase their visability to a national level and reach a wider segment. Serving customers easier was another outcome of e-commerce adoption followed by improved customer service and closer customer relationships. Regarding drivers and barriers the findings showed that penetration, cost reduction and expansion are the biggest drivers for adopting e- commerce followed by keeping up with digitalization. Furthermore, the identified barriers are fraud and security implementation costs that were a common experience among the Swedish SMEs. The finding showed that the success of the adoptions of e- commerce are a good content of the e-commerce and control, and convenience have developed from a success factor to a driving factor in today's market.

    The paper aims to contribute to the advancement of our understanding of how strategy practice processually unfolds. It directs attention to temporal relationality, accounting for a philosophical contextualization of practice in the application of the lived experience perspective. As pointed out, practitioners entwine with activities that constitute a nonlinear fluid and open strategy process. It accords to future-oriented movements a dimension of a past, and a dimension of a future to past-oriented movements. What is crucial are not linearity, event, cause, and an entity that moves but present future-oriented and present past-oriented movements, chiseled out by nouns and verbs and their interlinks. Present–future and present–past orientations also account for the iterational, projective and practical-evaluative dimensions of temporal relationality.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – To call attention to the relative neglect in strategic decision-making research to include a sense dimension, proposing a broadened conceptualization of strategic decision-making that accounts for the processes through which managers generate sense when exposed to turbulence in their environments.

    Design – Based on scholarly writing and empirical-oriented examples, the paper illustrates how managers cope with unusual and unexpected situations, and discusses fruitful directions for future research.

    Findings – When faced with turbulence, managers generate and communicate sense through believing in and arguing for a certain course of action, and through meeting talk and interaction that entwine with emotions. The focus on both retrospective and prospective orientation of action unfolds a sense dimension integral to which are belief and emotion.

    Research implications – Important questions for future research concern the role ‘plausibility’ plays in strategic action, the relationship between retrospective and prospective orientation of action, and the information conveyed by emotions.

    Practical implications – The paper could contribute to an increased awareness among practitioners that they can act effectively when coping with turbulence simply by making plausible sense, and encourage reconciliation between calculative rationality and emotion, in practice promoting their complementarity.

    Originality/value – The paper affords a broadened conceptualization of strategic decision-making through interrelating scholarly writing on strategic decision-making, sense-making and emotion. It also draws inspiration from Polanyi’s (1966) work on tacit dimension and knowing, furthering an understanding of how retrospective and prospective orientation unfold in connection with a tacit relation, constituting a so-called sense-made reality.

    Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to offer an insight into gender, context and entrepreneurial learning of women entrepreneurs in Germany.

    Design/methodology/approach – The paper explores entrepreneurial learning of women entrepreneurs both conceptually and empirically. Section 1 introduces a conceptual framework, which allows analysing entrepreneurial learning both from an individual gender-specific and from a context-based perspective. Empirically, the paper explores how women entrepreneurs acquire the (business-related) knowledge to start and grow an enterprise and the impact of regional, sector, family and social as well as macro environments in this regard. Findings are based on 31 in-depths interviews with women entrepreneurs and 23 interviews with key experts.

    Findings – It is found that the meso environment is more of an indirect influence; the macro and micro environments are strong influences on lives and decisions of women entrepreneurs, especially on their opportunity recognition. The business environment has both a direct and indirect influence.

    Practical implications – The results demonstrate an ongoing need for a contemporary image of women's entrepreneurship in Germany. The major challenge for policy-makers and support organizations therefore lies in propagating diverse entrepreneurial images and in incorporating the diversity of women's entrepreneurship and their specific learning approaches into policies and support offers.

    Originality/value – The paper contributes a different and so far neglected perspective on entrepreneurial learning and opportunity recognition, drawing attention to the contextual influences and the embedding of cognitive processes.

    There is still a gender gap in entrepreneurship, with only 30% of all business founders being women. One important question in this regard concerns how female entrepreneurs learn and acquire business-relevant knowledge. Individual learning processes are affected by individual sense making and cognitions, implying that amongst the other factors at the individual and environmental levels, gender is a factor influencing entrepreneurial learning. However, a gender perspective has been neglected in recent research on entrepreneurial learning and opportunity recognition. The paper concentrates on conceptually and empirically introducing this gender perspective. We explore the main influences on the entrepreneurial learning of female entrepreneurs and the determinants and triggers that impact female learning. Regarding the implications for entrepreneurship research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of what constitutes the specificities of female entrepreneurship in the frame of entrepreneurial learning and opportunity recognition.

    Bootstrapping plays a vital role in the life of small and medium-sized enter-prises. By providing a large variety of financing alternatives bootstrapping ensures the existence of entrepreneurship, even though, too less attention is paid to bootstrapping in the specific literature. Therefore, the master thesis strives to eliminate the gaps in the theory by bringing new insights in the field of bootstrapping.The purpose of the master thesis is to investigate the usage of boot-strapping methods and understand the main motives for using these methods from a sectorial and cross-national point of view.In order to accomplish the purpose, the research has been carried out among travel agencies and tour operators (both belonging to the tourism sector) from Sweden, Latvia and Romania by conducting 11 semi-structured interviews, as well as by collecting 50 internet-mediated questionnaires.Empirical findings were analyzed and interpreted through the 4-category Model that was created for gaining a deeper understanding of the phenom-ena of bootstrapping. Results showed that there is a certain trend in the usage of bootstrapping methods within the tourism sector. Thus, seek-ing out best conditions possible with supplier/s and obtaining payments in advance from customer are recognized to be the most important bootstrap-ping techniques for the travel agencies and tour operators. Moreover, it was found that the main motive for bootstrapping is cost reduction. In addi-tion, the results revealed that there are no significant differences in the usage of bootstrapping methods and in the motivation that lay behind bootstrapping from a cross-national point of view.

    The relationships between business planning and performance have divided the entrepreneurship research community for decades (Brinckmann et al, 2010). One side of this debate is the assumption that business plans may lock the firm in a specific direction early on, impede the firm to adapt to the changing market conditions (Dencker et al., 2009) and eventually, cause escalation of commitments by introducing rigidity (Vesper, 1993). Conversely, feedback received from the production and presentation of business plans may also lead the firm to take corrective actions. However, the mechanisms underlying the relationships between changes in business ideas, business plans and the performance of nascent firms are still largely unknown. While too many business idea changes may confuse stakeholders, exhaust the firm’s resources and hinder the undergoing legitimization process, some flexibility during the early stages of the venture may be beneficial to cope with the uncertainties surrounding new venture creation (Knight, 1921; March, 1982; Stinchcombe, 1965; Weick, 1979). Previous research has emphasized adaptability and flexibility as key success factors through effectual logic and interaction with the market (Sarasvathy, 2001; 2007) or improvisation and trial-and-error (Miner et al, 2001). However, those studies did not specifically investigate the role of business planning. Our objective is to reconcile those seemingly opposing views (flexibility versus rigidity) by undertaking a more fine-grained analysis at the relationships between business planning and changes in business ideas on a large longitudinal sample of nascent firms.

    Family firms form the majority of organizations around the world. However, only few survive beyond the first generation. Traditionally, intergenerational succession has been equated to the success. Within the family business literature succession is the most researched domain. However, very little has been said about alternatives to intergenerational transfer. The view that handing over the family firm to the children is the only way to go appears somewhat limited. Indeed, family business owners often use the term “pass along” to mean both transferring ownership to the next generation and selling the firm to pass along the wealth. In effect, some families want and can be passed on to multiple generations, while others may be unwilling or unable to do so. Empirical research suggested that some owners may perceive that there are no suitable family members to whom ownership and leadership can be transferred. Accordingly, for some business families an exit can be a positive choice. This book focuses on family firm sale, with a particular emphasis on valuation and acquirers’ perception of family firm targets.

    Rethinking family business succession: from a problem to solve to an ongoing practice2012Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)

    As the title denotes, I suggest we think differently about family business succession. I propose to rethink succession from a problem to a practice. This means that succession is not a problem to solve but something people do in family business; it is ongoing, it is integrated and it is ordinary. It poses an alternative to the common view of succession as something problematic, separate and extraordinary to handle in order to carry on with the business. To view succession as a practice opens up new understanding of succession as a continuing flow of activities embedded in the everyday life of business families instead of a problem to overcome through succession planning. This notion is philosophically inspired by sociology of practice, theoretically based in a practice perspective of strategy, and empirically explored in a case of succession at Karl Andersson & Söner. Three conceptions are developed that aid the analysis of succession, framing it as originating from socialization, included in everyday routines and progressing without design. The study shows how succession evolves as family members are socialized, engaged and trained through the durée of daily life. Beyond that, it shows how succession is not just about handing the business over from one generation to the next. It is also about working together in the moment, developing the business while preserving its essence. Engaging in the family business to be part of developing it is fundamentally different from joining because transfer of leadership and/or ownership is needed. It questions the idea of succession as a purpose in itself and suggests a shift from “taking over” to “being part”.
