    Abstract [en]

This report describes from start to finish how a new design and extension of the Gengras student union center at the University of Hartford was done. The report will be using a project that was made by me and explains how the whole project was planned by contacting S/L/A/M Collaborative Inc. all the way until the final outcome was presented for a final jury. It explains the whole chain process one should use when designing a building such as different analysis, precedent studies, concept development and how to approach the design project. New technologies, the feature of access and flexibility are the main influence words in the design that is being used as an example. These words can be found and felt throughout the whole building both in the façade drawings and in the plan solutions. The result was a building that is more organic and flexible in its forms and spaces than current architecture is today. A sort of architecture that comes more and more in which will shape the society in the future. My building also keeps a sense of the old façade to create a transition between the new and the old. The old and the new cooperation prove that the innovative design does not destroy the old building; it only enhances it and prepares it for the future.

    Abstract [en]

Previous research on students' reading and writing learning highlights the teachers' opinions about the subject and the factors that are important for a favorable reading and writing, but is missing the students' perspectives and experiences regarding their learning. The aim of the study was to investigate the students' perceptions of their literacy development and their thoughts on the importance of learning to read and write. With this aim as a starting point the following questions will be answered:

    • How do the students describe the importance of learning to read and write?
    • How do the students describe their own reading and writing development?
    • How do the perceptions and experiences differ between students who, according to the teacher, have had various individual conditions in the early reading and writing process?

The study is based on six semi-structured interviews with students in second grade, and an interview with the students' teacher. The base for the study is the hermeneutic theory and approach. The results show that the students' experiences and thoughts are of great importance for teachers to be able to understand how students feel about their reading and writing skills. It reveals some differences in the students' experiences, which may be due to their varying conditions at the beginning of their reading and writing process. Some students believe that the importance of learning to read and write is because it is required in adult life while other students believe that it is significant to be able to cope with school work. Four of the six students have experienced some problems in their literacy development in spelling, writing long words and reading a lot of text.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Prosthetic users often have problems with optimal fit and experience changes in volume. A RevoFit2 lamination kit allows the prosthetist to apply targeted compression gates that allows the user to change or reduce pressure without removing clothes.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a volume-adjustable prosthetic with RevoFit2 can give the user a better comfort throughout the day based on pressure distribution and volume change compared to a traditional laminated prosthesis.

Method: The pressure between the lower leg and the prosthetic and the volume of the lower leg were measured on a healthy person diagnosed with longitudinal dysmelia. The static and dynamic tests and volume of the residual limb were examined over four days. All tests spread over morning, noon and afternoon.

Results: Significant pressure reduction occurred using the RevoFit2-prosthetic compared to the traditional laminated prosthetic on most of the pressure points. The change of pressure throughout the day was also significantly decreasing on the RevoFit2-prosthetic compared to the laminated prosthetic, which were significantly increasing. No significance was found when measuring volume changes throughout the day.

Conclusion: RevoFit2 is a useful and easily manageable method to gain increased comfort for the user. By using RevoFit2 it is possible to reduce the pressure on the bony landmarks.

Analyzing third-party logistics providers through the concept of position2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose of this paper

Third-party   logistics firms have been described in a number of ways through different   role schemes based on industrial development.    This article uses one such role scheme to expand on the concept of   position for analyzing third-party logistics.

    Design/methodology/approach

The paper   uses a case study of one third-party logistics firm involved in several   complex distribution systems within the car industry to act as a focus for   the concept of a position.

    Findings

The paper   shows the relevance of using a specific conception of roles to expand on the   position concept from the literature and discusses how this can be used to   analyze TPLs.

    Research limitations/implications

The   research is based on a single case where position was not the only aspect   studied and would benefit from other empirical data especially from smaller   and more specialized third-party logistics firms.

    Practical implications

The   opportunities for TPL firms are seen to depend on both how the distribution   system is structured as well as their own capacities and the roles they   already possess.

    What is original/value of paper

Combining   different literatures that have studied different aspects of 3PLs gives a   better overall understanding of the development of this industry at a   conceptual level.

Humanitarian cluster leads: lessons from 4PLs2012In: Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management, ISSN 2042-6747, Vol. 2, no 2, p. 148-160Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to improve the understanding of the role of humanitarian cluster leads through applying lessons from the fourth-party logistics (4PL) literature.

Design/methodology/approach – The primary data for this paper are based on an extensive case study of coordination mechanisms in humanitarian logistics covering specifically the UNJLC (United Nations Joint Logistics Centre) and the Logistics Cluster. In total, 37 semi-structured interviews were conducted, together with site visits and review of official documentation.

Findings – The paper finds that the 4PL concept provides a partial match for the cluster leads with important lessons from the 4PL literature. In particular, lessons are related to selectivity of central participants for the cluster, and the need to develop relationship management skills.

Research limitations/implications – The paper shows some clear areas where lessons from the 4PL literature are highly relevant to the logistics cluster lead. Some of these implications can also be applied to the other clusters, but further concepts should be developed for the cluster system as a whole.

Social implications – The analysis shows that cluster leads should think of themselves more as facilitators rather than channel captains.

Originality/value – The tasks for the humanitarian cluster leads have been outlined in some detail, but the ways to accomplish them and how they should operate in relation to other actors in the field has been less clear. By using the 4PL concept the paper demonstrates a number of lessons that are relevant to the logistics cluster lead in particular.

Opportunities and constraints for intermediaries in distribution: The challenge of variety2010In: The IMP Journal, ISSN 2059-1403, E-ISSN 0809-7259, Vol. 4, no 3, p. 194-219Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The variety in contemporary distribution systems is large and reflects complex customer demands and new technological and organizational possibilities. Changes in the distribution system lead to new challenges and constraints for intermediaries trying to establish consistent roles for themselves. The challenge for theory is how to describe these changed and complex roles.

This article is based on a case study of one intermediary (a third-party logistics provider) in the car distribution industry. The article presents a framework of six roles, four of which find parallels in functionalist discussions of roles, and two of which appear more closely tied to new developments in distribution. These are specifically tied to the way intermediaries have increased opportunities to act as resource providers and organizers in contemporary distribution.

The opportunities and constraints for intermediaries in the type of distribution context studied are analyzed using the IMP literature. This proves fruitful in particular through discussing the impact of actor bonds and resource ties. The resources the intermediary controls may be less important in defining its role than the fit with resources possessed by others and the resulting opportunities.

Sourcing from China: Approaches and outcomes for Swedish firms2017In: The 29th NOFOMA Conference ”Taking On Grand Challenges” / [ed] Daniel Hellström, Joakim Kembro and Hajnalka Bodnar, Nordic Logistics Research Network, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The large and   persistent trend of firms sourcing from China is in itself well-established with many success stories. However, managing the sourcing is a complex issue confounded both by cultural differences and the length of the supply chain. Outcomes are often described primarily in terms of cost savings.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse how Swedish firms manage their sourcing in China and connect this to the types of outcomes achieved.

    Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a series of semi-structured interviews with Swedish production firms sourcing from China. These findings are then confronted with previous research on sourcing from China from other regions.

    Findings

The paper finds that the firms have developed good monitoring systems for their sourcing work and are generally satisfied with the outcomes, but also have persistent communication issues. The ability to source effectively from China, based on many years of experience and having handled prior difficulties is seen as a competitive advantage.

    Research limitations/implications

One archetype of Swedish firms successfully sourcing from China emerges from the research. The research only deals with selected Swedish production firms however and may not show the general situation for Swedish firms sourcing from China.

    Practical implications

The implications are that the development and use of monitoring systems seems to be a critical component of sourcing success.

    Original/value

The research addresses a gap where the actual outcomes of sourcing beyond general   assessments of whether they are successful are little explored in the literature, in particular from the Swedish perspective.

Outsourcing to TPL firms: Present customers as a decision criteria2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Third-party logistics providers (TPLs) and their connections with customers have been described in different ways in the literature.  In this article we consider three important aspects TPLs interactions with their customers.

First, TPLs can be usefully analyzed in terms of the different economies that they achieve, and how they can coordinate differing demands from their customers to achieve efficiency.  The second aspect of TPL interaction with customers is the relation between one TPL and a specific customer, with the TPL providing services of superior quality or low cost.  The third aspect of TPL interaction with customers is the relation between the customers themselves.  We know from previous studies that TPL firms have few customers and deep relationships in most cases (Andersson, 1997).  The consequences for the buyer of the TPL losing or gaining a big customer can then influence the economies of scale and scope extensively.

The IMP literature has a great deal to say about interaction between industrial actors and we propose to connect this study to IMP writings on interaction and network effects rather than just the effects between a TPL and single customer.  The position of a service provider such as a TPL can usefully be studied by considering IMP dimensions of actors, activities and resources (Håkansson & Snehota, 1995).

We report on the initial interviews of a study to explore the relations between TPLs and their buyers, with particular focus on how coordination of services is handled.  Initial results show that the points from the interviews really touch upon two levels.  There is one level to do with the physical network and logistics operations, and another which deals with the actors and the way they interact.  We suggest that the Johansson & Matsson (1992) model of the network and production system can explain how these two levels interact and propose to employ it more extensively.

Outsourcing to TPL firms: Present customers as a decision criteria2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Third-party logistics providers can create economies of scale and scope through activity coordination and specialization.  The size and type of customers and not least the way the TPL works with these is highly important in allowing the TPL to create scale and scope.  The issue of TPL relations with other customers is not however part of purchasing criteria as presented in the literature, presenting a significant and for the firms dangerous gap which needs to be closed.  We review the literature and report on the initial steps of a study to address this gap.

Phases of coordination in humanitarian logistics2012In: NOFOMA 2012 - proceedings of the 24th annual nordic logistics research network conference: 7-8 June 2012, Naantali, Finland / [ed] Juuso Töyli, Laura Johansson, Harri Lorentz, Lauri Ojala and Sini Laari, 2012, p. 885-886Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose of this paper

The number of organisations involved in   relief work in general and humanitarian logistics specifically is large and   increasing, creating new complexity. In this paper we analyse different types   of coordination in two case studies.    This has implications along many dimensions, including the roles of   participants, long and short term development and coordination.

    Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on two case studies,   one showing the initial stages of the development of the cluster system in   humanitarian relief, the other the post-election crisis in Kenya.  The original cases were restructured   according to our theoretical framework and analysed accordingly.  In total the cases are based on 39   semi-structured interviews.

    Findings

We find that the start-up of operations   is skewed by the need for a clear disaster declaration for the cluster   system.  The different roles of the   organisations and differing formal requirements create significant problems   before and after cluster activation and de-activation.  Individual organisations take on many roles   in the cluster system and beyond it, both in terms of vertical and horizontal   coordination.

    Research limitations/implications

The two cases have slightly different   foci with the Kenya case relating to a specific emergency whereas the cluster   system describes the system itself based on development in several   emergencies.

    Practical implications

It may be necessary to treat different   groupings of organisations differently, ideally restricting access based on   the role of the organisation and the stage of the disaster.  Participating organisations are of widely   different types and the same way of coordinating all of these may not be   appropriate.

    What is original/value of paper

There is a strong need for more academic   empirical research in the field.    Combining these two case studies for comparison allows us to learn new   lessons about how different approaches to coordination have worked in practice.

The coordination roles of relief organisations in humanitarian logistics2016In: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications, ISSN 1367-5567, Vol. 19, no 5, p. 465-485Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The number of organisations involved in relief work in general and humanitarian logistics specifically is large and increasing, creating new complexity. In this paper we analyse different types of coordination and roles in two case studies of the humanitarian cluster system based on its initial development and the Kenyan Post-election crisis. The different and unclear roles of the organisations create significant problems before and after cluster activation and deactivation. Individual organisations take on many roles in the cluster system and beyond it in terms of coordination. The clarity of the roles affects the need for and ease of coordination. We suggest a simple basic categorisation of roles as a starting point for developing this concept in the field of humanitarian logistics and connect this to coordination.

    Abstract [sv]

Conversion Rate Optimization: A Qualitative Approach to Identifying Optimization Barriers2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examined the question “What barriers are preventing Swedish companies from performing a structured conversion rate optimization process?”. As the purpose is to obtain an understanding of what is preventing companies from successfully execute conversion rate optimization (CRO). Given that CRO is an important part in most digital marketing activities. And despite increase in budget and importance in marketing, resource constraint continues to be the biggest obstacle.

The method employed to investigate this question was qualitative interviews with participants who worked with websites in seven different companies. An analysis was carried out, estimating the participating companies’ level of knowledge, overall structure, what to prioritize and current obstacles.

It was established that the interviewees had several different areas of concern with regards to conversion rate optimization. Limited time, budget, priorities, knowledge, ownership, structured approach and interpreting data, were all treated in the analysis. A discussion was carried out to argument the definition of “biggest” barrier, as some barriers were more common than others but easier to overcome. Overall, these obstacles could all be traced back to barriers as prioritization, structure and ownership.

The conclusion was that companies must have a more structured working process within the area of conversion rate optimization in order for this practice to be prioritized as a substantial part of companies online marketing activities.

Supply chain planning in automotive sector: Swedish Case Study2010In: Proceedings of the Plan Research Conference, Skövde, 2010, p. 53-72Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This research aims to enhance current knowledge of supply chain planning (SCP) by analyzing the importance of collaboration, information exchange and a supporting information system in its successful execution. The issues are examined through a case study from international manufacturing company, Volvo Powertrain, which operates in automotive industry through its worldwide manufacturing network. This research reveals that collaboration is a complex and important issue of SCP, and occurs simultaneously in vertical and horizontal dimensions. It is important to select strategic partners and to develop a structured work processes and routines. The main objective of collaboration is to determine common goals and objectives and to facilitate the exchange of information and these together drives the performance of a supply chain. A sufficient information system supporting the SCP is vital to facilitate collaboration, and information exchange between the different supply chain participants. However, currently in Volvo Powertrain quite many phases of SCP are completed without appropriate and integrated information systems and the process itself contains severalmanual phases. This study is explorative in nature and more empirical data, from similar and other research settings, is needed to further validate the findings. However, its empirical findings strengthen research discipline knowhow of SCP in global manufacturing companies. This research provides insights to managers and practitioners on how to coordinate operations planning and control (OPC) across organizations within the supply chain to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. The SCP procedures described in this research work also are valuable for Volvo Powertrain and other industrial actors to further develop processes to respond on competitive pressure. This research work empirically demonstrates, as very few before have done so, how OPC can be coordinated across the supply chain. It is also based on the most recent observations from the automotive industry sector, where structural renewal has been ongoing in the recent decade due to global production overcapacity.

Efficiency of the Korean defense industry: A stochastic frontier approach2009In: Productivity, efficiency, and economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, Heidelberg: Physica Verlag, 2009, p. 217-254Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The defense market, which is composed of a sole demander and few suppliers, is generally regarded as a monopolistic market. In this sense, it has its own characteristics that are different from other common competitive markets. High precision technology and a huge amount of capital investment in the initial stage of production are essential in the defense industry, and this necessitates subsidy policy of the government. Most of the supplies are produced in an order-based manner due to the special specification requirements and this hampers the market-driven pricing mechanism. The price is determined based on negotiations between the two parties, considering the cost of production, retrieval of the investment, and efficient allocation of the government budget. This study is organized as follows. The history of the Korean defense industry and policies are summarized in Sect. 10.2. The data is described in Sect 10.3. In Sect 10.4, this study sets out the stochastic frontier production function for the analysis of efficiency and the model for decomposition of TFP. The results of the estimation of the stochastic frontier model are presented in Sect 10.5, where technical efficiency, testing results on factors affecting efficiency and decomposition of TFP are discussed. Lastly, Sect 10.6 presents the conclusions of this study. ©2009 Physica-Verlag Heidelberg.

En utredning av Rom I-förordningens artikel 4.1(h)2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Article 4.1(h) in the Rome I regulation establishes which law that will be applicable on contracts concerning financial instruments concluded in multilateral systems. The main problem is that most contracts concluded within these systems have standard clauses which contain a clause on the applicable law. If this is the case, Article 3.1 in the Rome I Regulation is applicable instead. This problem makes it difficult to find a need for article 4.1(h) if it will only be applicable in exceptional cases. However, the legal position on this matter is still unclear since the Rome I Regulation has just been put into force. It is therefore important that future case law, in a clear and precise way, determines how article 4.1(h) shall be used in order for it to be properly used within the sphere of international private law.

Egoistic vs. Altruistic Incentives in Promoting Growth: From Developing Nations Perspective2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Developing countries are dependent upon foreign capital since they lack adequate domestic means to save and invest in order to grow and develop. This thesis aims to evaluate the role of foreign capital inflows in enhancing economic growth in a sample of 90 developing countries between the years 1991 and 2006. Even though FDI is recognized as the most attractive key in economic development strategies, numerous international help organizations call for increased ODA flows since many developing countries do not seem to benefit from FDI. This study will closely look into the issue where FDI and ODA are incorporated into the same model to identify the different effects they bring upon economic growth. Is capital given by the altruistic intention to assist developing nations in the form of ODA more beneficial than capital given through FDI by Multi-National Corporations (MNC) with their egoistic profit-seeking incentives, in the matter of enhancing economic growth? The obtained results from our cross-sectional OLS-regression are coherent with previous studies where FDI promotes economic growth, while ODA has a negative impact. This implies that FDI do actually play a more important role in developing countries than ODA in increasing growth in GDP per capita.

67-årsregeln i LAS: Strider regeln mot EU-rätten?2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

SAMSJUKLIGHET: En kvalitativ studie om avgörande faktorer kring återhämtningsprocessen2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Dual diagnosis "samsjuklighet" is a term for "mental illness and co-occuring addiction". The scientific evidence has shown that people with dual diagnosis needs "simultaneous treatment of the mental illness and the addiction". Integrated simultaneous treatment aims to strengthen social skills and social functioning, alongside pharmacological therapy for the mental illness and the addiction. Treatment needs to be long and continuously and the staff should apply Case-management methods. The general question of our study is: "which are the contributory factors to recuperate for people with dual diagnosis?" The study is based on seven qualitative interviews. We have opted to describe dual diagnosis from two perspectives "the civil society" perspective and the "public" perspective. The civil society perspective is represented by three non-profit organizations directed towards people with psychiatric disorders and addiction abuse. The public perspective is represented by two employees from the integrated Dual Diagnosis team (BoP) in Jönköping and by two employees at the local social services in Jönköping. The result of our study is presented around four main themes: the treatment relation, collaboration, housing and marginality. Aaron Antonovsky´s theory of KASAM is used to analyze the empirical results of the study. It is essential to address all parts of in life in the recuperation process. It is important to have a functioning home. Effective treatment has to be based on free commitment from the individual and true engagement from the staff. The treatment should aim to motivate the client to reduce substance use step by step, and strengthen self-esteem. It is important to be as flexible as possible in the treatment. The collaborating network around a person with dual diagnosis can create order and structure, which strengthen the recuperation process. People with dual diagnosis are a marginalized group living in the fringes of society. An important factor to recuperate is to create a sense of belonging and meaning.

Undervisning för medvetenhet och engagemang: En kvalitativ studie om hur lärare undervisar för hållbar utveckling i årkurs 4-6 i ämnena NO & Teknik2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Undervisning för framtiden: Undervisning för hållbar utveckling i svensk skola2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Benefits and challenges of practicing permaculture: – the perspectives of both immigrants and indigenous people2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Modern agricultural production is being intensified worldwide and is often based on monoculture cultivation and the use of chemical pesticides. In Guatemala, the access to land suitable for farming is limited and many people struggle with land acquisition, malnutrition and discrimination. This is the situation for indigenous Mayans in the region of Lake Atitlán, where this qualitative study took place. An alternative approach is permaculture, where the focus is on regenerative living, self-sufficiency and reducing resource consumption. The concept is based on traditional knowledge that has been developed and practiced over time by indigenous people. The aim of the study is to examine how permaculture is practiced by different actors in the area, which includes both foreigners and indigenous Mayans. The research questions focus on how practicing permaculture can lead to ecological and social development in the area as well as what different challenges are encountered. The methods used in this field study was participant observation in the area and semi-structured interviews with ten respondents, both foreigners and indigenous people, who practice permaculture or similar methods. The result has shown that the respondents have experienced an increased access to food that provides a varied and healthy diet, as well as abundant and thriving ecosystems in their surrounding environment. Many of the indigenous respondents have chosen the practice in order to have enough food for a living and reduce their dependence on income and economic structures. In general, foreigners chose this way of life due to its simplicity and their longing to get away from a modern, hectic lifestyle. The respondents have experienced different challenges from current structures, but they are all positive about spreading the knowledge and practice.

Arbetsberedning i produktion: Kommunikation och informationsöverföring mellan produktionsledning och yrkesarbetare inom organisationen Peab Sverige AB2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Purpose: The construction industry's productivity in Sweden is low and one of the major causes of this is the lack of work preparation. A study showed that 45 percent of the fault causes could be linked to work preparation and accounted for up to 30 percent of the error costs. Work preparation is a tool for efficient and safe execution of work, but despite good foundation, the use of it does not work at present. The lack of use of work preparation is to a large extent a result of poor communication and information exchange between production management and occupational workers in production.

The aim of the work is to investigate communication and information exchange between production management and occupational workers in the production. Identifying deficiencies in communication and information exchange, how they can be rectified. As well as provide improvement suggestions for the use of work preparation as a tool between production management and occupational workers.

Method: To achieve the goal, a qualitative case study on three building projects has been carried out. The methodology has been semi structured interviews with team members involved in the work preparation, observation of meetings, document analysis of the organization's work preparation and a literature study to gain knowledge of the factors that cause deficiencies in communication and information exchange of the team members involved in the work preparation.

Findings: The identified underlying causes of communication and information exchange failures are too little information about work preparation, unclear how to implement it and too few tools. Production management does not realize the value of work preparation, which means that the time required for a good work preparation is not set aside.

Implications: An adequate work preparation is an important factor in increasing the productivity of construction projects. In order to achieve an adequate workforce the organization must have stronger guidelines and more tools to streamline it and appoint the responsible party to implement them. Production management needs to realize the value of a work preparation and set aside the time required for it to be beneficial.

Limitations: The limitations on the work have been a requirement based on the time perspective of the work. The work is considered despite the limitation to Peabs office in Jönköping applicable to other projects. The work has not had the purpose of changing the work preparation but focuses on the use of it, how it is worked and used. Reflecting that work preparation is a general term not only used in the construction industry, the result is generalizable to not only building projects but in all areas of work that require a comprehensive work preparation in an efficient and flexible manner.

Investeringsbeslut kopplade till ställtidsreducering: En jämförelse mellan investeringsbeslut baserade på simulering respektive utan simulering2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate how the use of discrete event simulation affects investment decisions linked to changeover time reduction. This purpose has been met by answering the following two questions:

    • How does an investment analysis differ, regarding changeover time reduction, based on discrete event simulation from one that is not?

    • How is an investment decision in setup time reduction affected if the decision is based on discrete event simulation or not?

Method - The study has been conducted as a one-off study at a Swedish manufacturing company where data collection has taken place through interviews and observations. This data has then been analyzed both as a comparison between the company's existing investment analysis and an investment analysis expanded by simulation. This result has, in turn, been compared against a theoretical framework developed during a literature review.

Findings - This study shows that simulation enables the ability to take into account more parameters of both changeover time itself and surrounding factors such as sequencing and batch sizes, fitter dependency and buffers. It also enables the impact of variation to be visualized. The result also indicates that an investment decision that takes place without simulation and without regard to the extension of parameters risks overestimating the benefit of the investment.

Limitations - The main limitations in this study consist of that only increased throughput and the reduced cost this may result in is used as a measure of the benefit of an investment decision. No other aspects that a reduction in changeover time can affect have been taken into account in the analysis, even though it is discussed in the discussion chapter. The study has also not made any difference to the effort required to reduce the changeover time or reduce the variation of changeover time. This means that the cost of changeover time reduction or reduction of its variation is considered the same no matter where in the process it takes place as long as it is equal in size.

Keywords – Discrete event simulation, Setup-time reduction, investment basis, investment decision
