Customization in bicycle retailing2015In: Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, ISSN 0969-6989, E-ISSN 1873-1384, Vol. 23, p. 77-90Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to explore the process of customization by investigating how retailers and consumers interact in bicycle retailing. The paper focuses on three high-end bicycle retailers. Building on qualitative data gathered through interviews and netnography, this study takes both retailers’ and consumers’ processes into account. The results show that retailers capitalize on external and internal opportunities for co-creation, including new technologies, production and distribution innovations, and social media. Retailers’ planning for co-creation plays a significant role in providing a unique shopping experience for consumers. This includes supply chain solutions such as effective inventory and warehousing systems, partnerships and outsourcing, tracking, and postponement, which facilitate simplicity. Retailers rely on feedback from consumers to improve their planning and implementation processes. In terms of consumer processes, several emotions are evident, including the sense of standing-out and self-esteem, fun and coolness, creativity and imagination, and most importantly, the possibility of reflecting one’s personality in self-designed bikes. Systems that are easy to interact with, such as interactive online configurators, contribute to consumers’ cognitive processes. Loyalty and positive word-of-mouth turns out to be a common manifestation of the behavior associated with such co-creation processes. We also reflect on how, by what means, and why consumers and retailers engage in co-creation through customization, mainly pertaining to learning and innovation. Our results also point to various possible outcomes from such processes for consumer and retailers; including expressing ones personality and individuality for consumers, and providing product variety efficiently, and boosting brand image for retailers.

The missing link between local and global best practices within manufacturing2015In: Proceedings for the 22nd International Annual EurOMA Conference, Operations management for sustainable competitiveness, 26 June - 1 July 2015, Neuchâtel, Switzerland, International Annual EurOMA Conference, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper takes a knowledge-based view on operations strategy and investigate how local best practices (LBPs) are used as contributors for identification and evaluation of a manufacturing global best practice (GBP). Semi-structured interviews with 14 respondents at seven multinational companies concluded that LBPs and GBPs are transferred by different mechanisms. LBPs are rarely used as contributors to GBPs but rather stay internal among local sites. GBPs more often concern development of systems and frameworks and are thereby less concerned with context. The importance of including local knowledge and practices and use existing internal resources to reach competitive advantages are emphasised.

    Abstract [en]

The prevention of age discrimination in Sweden did not have any solvent grounds until directive 2000/78/EG was implemented into Swedish law. Today age discrimination has been banned for just over two years. This ground of discrimination has, compared to other existing grounds of discrimination in Swedish law, a lot more opportunities to make exceptions from. Given the fact that the exemption rules are vague, it is difficult to determine whether the protection against age discrimination is in fact a protection at all. The purpose of this essay is to describe what the law regarding age discrimination means. Is the protection against age discrimination appropriate or are the prohibitions against age discrimination deficient? Both Swedish and EU-law applies in this essay, since the Swedish Discrimination Act has been influenced by EU-law.

From the prohibition of age discrimination there are a few exemptions which are permissible under Swedish and EU-law. There are three possibilities to make exemptions to the age discrimination ban in Swedish law, one of which can be made in individual contracts and collective agreements as regards the right to pension- survivor - or invalidity benefits. The other two exemptions are more general and vague and therefore do not provide much guidance. Consequently, the main question is whether or not the Swedish Discrimination Act provides a protection with no actual effect, since the preparatory works mention situations where exceptions to the prohibition of age discrimination are considered to be permitted.

In 2001 a mandatory rule came into force in the Employment Protection Act (LAS) which gave employees the right, to remain in their post until the month in which he or she reaches the age of 67. The issue however occurs after the employer has reached this age and whether or not this rule constitutes a direct discrimination by law.

Coordination in humanitarian logistics through clusters2010In: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management, ISSN 0960-0035, E-ISSN 1758-664X, Vol. 40, no 8/9, p. 657-674Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – In the field of humanitarianism, cluster thinking has been suggested as a solution to the lack of coordinated disaster response. Clusters for diverse functions, including sheltering, logistics and water and sanitation, can be viewed as an effort to achieve functional coordination. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a greater understanding of the potential of cluster concepts using supply chain coordination and inter‐cluster coordination. The focus is on the conceptual level rather than on specific means of coordination.

Design/methodology/approach – The cluster concept in humanitarian relief, along with some key empirical issues, is based on a case study. The concept is then compared to the literature on clusters and coordination in order to develop a theoretical framework with propositions on the tradeoffs between different types of coordination.

Findings – The results provide important reflections on one of the major trends in contemporary development of humanitarian logistics. This paper shows that there is a tradeoff between different types of coordination, with horizontal coordination inside cluster drawing attention away from important issues of the supply chain as well as the need to coordinate among the clusters.

Research limitations/implications – There is a need for more in‐depth case studies of experiences with clusters in various operations. Various perspectives should be taken into account, including the field, responding agencies, beneficiaries, donors, military and commercial service providers, both during and between disasters.

Practical implications – The paper presents the tradeoffs between different types of coordination, in which basic aims such as standardisation through functional coordination, must be balanced with cross‐functional and vertical coordination in order to more successfully serve the users' composite needs.

Originality/value – The focus on possible trade‐offs between different types of coordination is an important complement to the literature, which often assumes simultaneous high degrees of horizontal and vertical coordination.

Theory development in humanitarian logistics: A framework and three cases2009In: Management Research News, ISSN 0140-9174, E-ISSN 1758-6135, Vol. 32, no 11, p. 1008-1023Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: There is a need for theory development within the field of humanitarian logistics to understand logistics needs in different stages of a crisis and how to meet these. This paper aims to discuss three dimensions identified in logistics and organization theories and how they relate to three different cases of humanitarian logistics operations - the regional concept of the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies, the development and working of the United Nations Joint Logistics Centre and coordination challenges of military logistics in UN mandated peacekeeping operations. The purpose is to build a framework to be used in further studies.

Design/methodology/approach: A framework for the study of humanitarian logistics along three dimensions is developed, followed by a discussion of the chosen cases in relation to these dimensions. The framework will be used as basis for the case studies to be undertaken for the purpose of understanding and identification of new questions and needs for other or revised concepts from theory.

Findings: The paper shows the relevance of a wide literature to the issues pertinent to humanitarian logistics. There is considerable promise in extant literature on logistics, SCM and coordination, but this needs to be confronted with the particular issues seen in the humanitarian logistics setting to achieve further theory development.

Originality/value: The major contribution of the paper lies in its breadth of theoretical perspectives presented and combined in a preliminary theoretical framework. This is applied more specifically in the three case studies described in the paper.

The Green Consumer: A Study of Income and Organic Consumption2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organic consumption is currently experiencing a boom of sales on the Swedish and international market. Whether this occurrence is a contemporary trend or if it will prove to be sustainable in the future, the demographics of the so-called ‘green consumer’ are of great interest for economic agents on markets such as foods and textiles. Therefore, the writers have chosen to highlight this topic by focusing on the relation between income and purchase of organic products.. Economic data for the Swedish market has been gathered and analyzed through various statistical and macroeconomic perspectives, where the basis has been Kelvin Lancaster’s models of consumer choice theory. The results showed that income does not generally have a direct effect on the choice of purchasing an organic good in Sweden, although it cannot be fully dismissed when discussing the demographics of the green consumer. Other factors are of importance as well, including education, marital status and geographical location. The study of the green consumer is a rather new area and this study, along with its previous counterparts, has proved it difficult to draw any firm conclusions regarding the characteristics of the organic consumer. Therefore, future studies within this area will have plenty to discover about a subject of increasing interest and importance on the market.

    Abstract [en]

Today adjustments on the pricing of internal transactions between multinational enterprises can lead to economic double taxation for the involved companies. This circumstance will result in an obstacle for private enterprising on the international market. Rules regarding corresponding adjustments and the mutual agreement procedure, that is used to eliminate economic double taxation, are today not sufficient tools to achieve this purpose. Consequently, changes regarding these rules should be implemented.

The main reason for why economic double taxation is not put right is the competent authorities’ inability to reach a suitable solution for the dispute. This is essentially because the lack of time limit for the procedure and the lack of obligation for the authorities to reach a solution on the issue. These weaknesses should be attended to, if the procedure shall have a larger effect in the future.

Since it is not appropriate to introduce cogent rules for the competent authorities to solve the dispute between themselves other alternatives should be considered, as international arbitration procedure and an international tax court. Although an international tax court probably would be the most effective alternative in order to eliminate economic double taxation, the situation in the area of international taxation requires that the alternative concerning an international arbitration procedure initially should be considered.

Jag växer som människa: En studie om vilka motiv förskollärare uttrycker om arbetet på mångkulturella förskolor2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: A structured bedside handover in healthcare is important for reduce care damage. Nurses have a considerable role in the interprofessional team current to increase patient safety. Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR) is an instrument for bedside handovers and implemented in Sweden 2010. It is used in hospitals, mainly within emergency Care. Purpose:  Examine how to study the following of SBAR at the bedside handover between ambulance and nurse in the emergency care. Another purpose was to examine if, when and which disturbing factors had an impact in the bedside handover. Method:  The method was quantitative with empirical assaulted.  The material was collected through 53 observations in emergency care on a medium sized hospital in Sweden. The data were collected by two different observation-protocols during bedside handover, one aiming at SBAR and the other disturbing factors. The result was processed in SPSS statistics. Result The result is described in two categories, Category 1 SBAR, which illustrates compliance with SBAR and Category 2, which illustrates the occurrence of disturbing factors. The result showed that compliance with SBAR was largely missed and that interfering factors were frequent. Conclusion: SBAR where produced as a result of shortcomings during bedside handovers, despite that important information according to the patient safety is lost. This means that the SBAR card for emergency can be questioned when it comes to suitability for bedside handover between ambulance and emergency care.

Foreign Exchange Risk Management Practices: A Study of Swedish Medium- and Large-sized Companies2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to describe which foreign exchange risk techniques that are used by medium- and large-sized Swedish companies within the Jönköping region, and how they as well as a bank evaluate the techniques in the current recession.

Background: The reason why companies decide to expand their operations abroad is to take advantage from imperfections in other national markets. The fluctuations in currencies and exchange rates can have a huge effect on a company’s cash flows when doing business abroad. Therefore, when companies manage their foreign exchange risk, they have to be familiar with all the methods and tools available in order to pick the ones that best suit their needs.

Method: We sent out a questionnaire and got it answered by eight companies within the Jönköping region regarding their strategy when managing foreign exchange risk. We have also interviewed a financial adviser, working at Handelsbanken, regarding the techniques offered to companies. A “foreign currency table” located in Linköping, was also contacted. They are in charge of creating recommendations and products sold by Handelsbanken.

Conclusion: Hedging is the most frequently used tool by the companies in our study. Leading and lagging strategies are used quite often, while swaps and invoice currency is used less frequently by them. Exposure netting and cash pooling does not seem to be used at all. We believe that companies generally should seek more information on new techniques introduced in the market and be open to new possibilities and solutions for managing currency risk. Most of the companies in our sample, according to us, are too comfortable in their choice of techniques.

Can money be made on Mondays?: An empirical investigation of the efficiency on the OMXS302010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if abnormal patterns concerning the rates of return during specific weekdays and months are observable for the companies in the OMXS30 during the period 2003-2010. A special focus will be put on the Monday effect anomaly.

Background: Investors have a tendency to search for investment opportunities. If errors exist in the pricing of stocks it indicates that anomalies are present and that the stock market is inefficient. Investors then have the possibility to utilize the anomalies in order to receive above average returns.

Method: This study is using data of stock prices from Nasdaq OMX in the period of 2003-2010. The strength and existence of the Swedish stock market efficiency is measured through autocorrelation-, chi-square- and regression tests. Average monthly stock returns are calculated on daily-, monthly-, and yearly basis. The returns are compared in order to examine if day-of-the-week and turn-of-the-year anomalies exist.

Conclusion: No Monday effect is found in 2003-2010. However, positive Thursday- and positive Friday effects are detected. A negative turn-of-the-year effect as well as a positive April effect is found. The investment opportunities that could be utilized in 2003-2010 due to the specific anomalies in the period do not necessarily imply that the same anomalies can be expected on the OMXS30 in the future.

EFFEKTIVISERING AV INTERNA PROVFLÖDEN INOM LABORATORIEVERKSAMHETEN: EFFICIENCY OFF INTERNAL SAMPLEFLOWS IN LABORATORY OPERATIONS2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Laboratories in Sweden have a big challenge when Sweden is a wide country and big parts is sparsely populated and many samples have limited durability. At same time as laboratories is a sensitive branch with high demands on time and quality which makes a functional internal and external logistic important.

Purpose: The purpose is to increase the understanding of internal sample flows for companies who works with sample analysis, by analyse sample flows in companies that is analysing samples, from a logistic perspective.

To answer the purpose, two research questions are formulated:

    • ·        What limitations can be identified in internal sample flows from delivery to analyses done for companies working with analyses of samples?
    • ·        How can limitations in internal sample flows be handled from delivery to analyses done for companies working with analyses of samples?

Method: A case study has been made on Eurofins laboratory in Lidköping where data has been collected by interview studies and observations.

Result: By the logistic perspective several possibilities to increase the efficiency have been found. By logistic tools proposals have been made how those hindrances can be handled. Those possibilities to increase the efficiency is:

    • Consolidation activities
    • Failsafe
    • Standardizations
    • Overlook unload/loading of trucks
    • Make the sample flow even during the week

Conclusions: In this study have the writer made several recommendations for companies that is working with analysing samples. But it is important to consider that those recommendations are case-specific, but if same conditions occur is the result possibly to generalize.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis in social work aims to study the interaction between the different professionals and organisations in the swedish version of Childrens Advocacy Centers, Barnahus, and if it ever can clash between the different professions. If so, we authors would like to see if there could be any consequenses for the child.

The empirical data were collected through five qualitative interviews with different professionals at the chosen Children Advocacy Center. Three of our informants were social workers, one worked as a police officer and the fifth informant worked as a prosecutor. We transcribed the material we recieved to analyze it based on a thematic analysis. We created four different themes based on the result we got: Focus on the childs best, interaction on Childrens Advocacy Center, Difficulties on Childrens Advocacy Center and Strain of the child. The result was later on interpreted and analyzed and discussed from a chosen theoretical point of view; institutional theory. This study shows that the professionals experience interaction as well functioning, but sometimes they collide at work when they have different tasks. Some of these crashes can cause problems for the child, one of these strains is that the child is blamed.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the work is to help municipalities continue to manage, operate and use old historic houses in the future.

Method: The methods chosen to achieve the objective is document analysis, literature studies and case study.

Findings: Culture heritage buildings needs to get more energy efficient, so they can be kept in use and existence. It is possible to implement energy efficiency measures without damaging the building's cultural value. Measures like window replacement, insulation and replacement of ventilation systems should be selected depending on the character of the house. Insulation and window replacement are effective measures to reduce the energy consumption of old historically important buildings, but often risk distorting the character of the building. Ventilation system replacement can involve minor changes to the building but is a relatively expensive investment.

Implications: Changes in an existing building will always affect its construction, but it does not mean that the building's heritage value is distorted.

Limitations: Calculations will only be performed for a reference object, library in Tidaholm. The calculated result will be specific for this building, since the outcome varies with buildings and their different characteristics. However, the solutions can be applied to multiple objects. There are several energy efficiency measures, but this report will only involve insulation, window replacement and ventilation changes.

Keywords: Energy efficiency, historically important buildings, heat exchanger, building regulations, ventilation.

Analys av verkstadsplaneringen: på Fläkt Woods i Jönköping2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper is finishing part of the two-year master programme in Industrial Engineering and Management.

Initially there was an inquiry of studying the queue-times that Fläkt Woods uses when they break down internal working orders. These times were assumed to be too generalised and does not apply to the actual value of the queue-times which generates incorrect data and delivery delays. During the work of this paper it has been established that it is not the queue-times that is the biggest problem. The problem is the shop floor control and the lack of manufacturing the right products at the right time. Therefore an analysis of the production planning process was made to bring forward the real problems. The purpose of this paper is to work out a decision basis how Fläkt Woods should plan their production in order to increase the internal and external delivery precision.

The result of the analysed times and delivery precisions shows that the actual queue-times in many cases exceeds the planned queue-time. The actual delivery precision is below the target value in all the cases. The identified problems are in the first place that it is too much focus on the next few hours and that there is a sub optimization for the different production groups.

A new planning system is suggested where focus is on the coming time periods and what is manufactured in a production group is based on the actual need. This is done by using individual dispatch lists for the different production groups. The dispatch lists is based on the actual need in the following group and there should be a capacity limit in order to reduce the risk of overbooking the production. In the end this system will provide a manufacturing order based on the actual need in the final assembly groups. The work of the production planner will focus on planning the coming production for the final assembly groups. In the future the system might be transferred to the suppliers in order to get the right products at the right time.

Utomhuspedagogik som arbetsmetod: i matematikundervisning för elever i årskurs 4-62018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Responsible Quality at Casall: Evaluating Corporate Social Responsibility Projects2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Much research has been conducted within Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and it is currently a highly debated topic. Today, CSR is not only pursued in response to public pressure, but is also seen as a source of competitive advantage and differentiation. The problem that this thesis deals with is that many SMEs do not use CSR as a proactive competitive tool in a strategic manner. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to develop an evaluation framework for SME‟s CSR projects, and to use this framework to analyze Casall‟s CSR projects in order to provide recommendations for Casall regarding strategic CSR.

CSR as a concept is first discussed with the use of previous literature. This leads to the development of an evaluation framework for SME‟s CSR projects. The methodology is carefully considered, and a qualitative case study is chosen to be conducted at Casall.

The results and analysis are presented in accordance with the theoretical framework and method. An in-depth analysis is conducted with the help of the evaluation framework. This leads to recommendations on Casall‟s existing and future engagement in CSR projects. The five recommendations are to simplify the guidelines for producers, adapt the guidelines for producers, get engaged in the local community, implement an internal code of conduct, and raise customer awareness of their engagement in CSR.

This thesis contributes to the academic society by combining theories into a practical framework for evaluating SMEs‟ CSR projects. More specifically, the framework is used to guide Casall in their future CSR involvement. The framework can also be useful for other SMEs to evaluate and integrate suitable CSR projects into corporate strategy.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose - This study aims to contribute to knowledge about a more efficient material handling. The following questions are formed to fulfill the purpose of this study.  1. What wastes can be identified in the material handling between storage room and assembly line?  2. In which way can these wastes be reduced?  Methodology - To fulfill the purpose of this study a case study was performed at a company in the manufacturing industry. At the same time a literature study was performed with topics about material handling and Lean Production. The data that was collected was analyzed according to the theoretical framework, this work led to the result of this study.  Findings - Wastes was the main cause to an inefficient material handling and six wastes of Liker and Meier (2006) eight wastes have been identified. After the wastes had been identified, proposals of improvements for the wastes are given. The recommended improvements for a more efficient material handling include a better division of operations, like implementation of kanban and dimensions of cargo carriers. Unnecessary stock was one of the biggest wastes that were identified and the stock levels should therefore be reduced. By using these improvements the material handling has potential to be more efficient.  Implications - This study have proposal of improvements about how a company can create a more efficient material handling. For a company that wants to achieve an efficient material handling, it is necessary to identify the wastes that have the biggest impact on the efficiency.  Research limitations - This case study have been a single case study with one analysis unit. The boundaries of this study are limited to wastes that emerge between storage room and assembly line. This leads to that the proposals about efficiency are limited within these boundaries.

Ekonomiska effekter av automatiserad driftsättning i äldre förvaltningsprojekt: En studie för att motivera vilka ekonomiska effekter ett införande av CI eller CD har för äldre förvaltningsprojekt2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

It is becoming increasingly important how IT projects handle production sets in order to ensure flawless deliveries and quickly satisfy customers and users with new qualityassured functionality. For newly started projects, it is a natural part to build a delivery structure around a Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery workflow that are methods for automating and contributing to this. But for a management project that has been going on for several years without having adopted automated methods, it is not certain that it is just as economically justified from the customer's perspective. The purpose of the thesis project is to contribute with knowledge in automatic commissioning as older management projects can take part in to better understand whether there is an economic motivation to implement an automatic commissioning tool and a CI / CD method of operation. The knowledge can be used to better motivate a management group that annually bases the management project's budget to invest in an automated deployment flow. Based on the purpose, four questions were formed that have been answered by developing an automated commissioning tool and comparing it with the manual methods that a management project uses. The methods were evaluated by experiment and analysed by T-test to investigate the time efficiency of the tool and ROI analysis to assess whether the tool is a profitable investment. The result of the study indicates that an automatic tool is more time-efficient, but that the development time for developing the tool represents a higher cost than the time savings. This means that the management project on which the tool was applied would have a negative return of - 6% based on one year. Instead, the thesis highlights other positive consequences that should be emphasized by introducing automatic commissioning. The work responds to the purpose by clarifying how the two flows look from a developer perspective and presenting cost-related effects that the automatic tool constitutes compared to manual methods. The results of the study contribute to increase knowledge in automatic deployments and its effects on older management projects using manual methods.

    Abstract [en]

In many products a compromise between ground clearance and the required space to store the product has to be made. This problem attracted the attention of the authors of this thesis. The objective of this project is to develop a functioning solution to a foldable wheel. The solution should be applicable to several types of product groups. A limitation for this work has been made so that the work only covers solutions for lighter vehicles. The purpose is to drive this project forward, so that a solution can be found. Furthermore the purpose of the report is to clarify how the authors proceeded to design and construct the wheel according to a fixed specification. The authors of this project also wishes to develop their knowledge within the field of product development.Set-Based Concurrent Engineering (SBCE) has been used as the underlying method on which this work was based. The work started with a preliminary study. Relevant specifications was established using the results from the study. The specifications was given a rang by the use of pairwise weighting, then a QFD was made using said requirements. The wheel was divided into three different areas. Solutions was developed to problems within each area, independently of one another. The project underwent three concept stages and three screening stages. During the third screening a final concept was chosen for further development.Strength simulations was performed in Solid Works, by using the results from the simulations adjustments to the design could be made. The authors succeeded in developing a wheel capable of a volume reduction by 70 %. When the wheel is dimensioned to fit an ordinary bike it weighs about 2.5kg and can take a radial load of over 1 000N. The final concept is called Arcas and is made up of four sections of a specially developed flexible arc-solution. The arc-solution enables the wheels curved surfaces to be straightened out when the wheel is about be stored. The authors consider that they have developed the knowledge in product development and also improved their ability to handle loose defined projects. It should be possible to further reduce the volume up to levels around 80 %. A detailed FEM analysis of the components should be of use.

    Abstract [en]

This article investigates a paradox in the reception of Web 2.0. While some of its services are seen as creators of a new informational economy and are hence publicly legitimized, other features are increasingly under surveillance and policed, although in reality the differences between these services is far from obvious. Our thesis is that we are currently experiencing a temporary postponement of the law, in the context of Web 2.0. Agamben’s work on the state of exception is here used to theorize the informational economy as an ongoing dispossession, under the guise of ‘networked production’. This dispossession is seen as a parallel to the concept of ‘primitive accumulation’, as a means of moving things from the exterior to the interior of the capitalist economy. This theory lets us problematize the concept of free labor, the metaphor of the enclosure, and puts into question the dichotomy between copyright and cultural commons.

Reinforcing Property by Strengthening the Commons: A New Media Policy Paradigm?2012In: tripleC (cognition, communication, co-operation): Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society / Unified Theory of Information Research Group, ISSN 1726-670X, E-ISSN 1726-670X, Vol. 10, no 1, p. 49-55Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In much scholarly writing and in many leftist and activist accounts the enclosures of the cultural commons have been fiercely critiqued. However, during the last years, new media business models, that challenge the notion of the cultural industries as “copyright industries”, has been taking shape. A new class of entrepreneurs is instead working to expand the commons as part of their businesses. Accordingly, representatives from these new media industries, policy makers, and politicians have joined the academic and political critique of the “enclosures of the cultural common”. The paper argues that this is a shift within the dominant media policy paradigm and an attempt to integrate existing practices on the Internet, based on cooperation and sharing, into the market. By relocating the struggle from “intellectual property” to “platform economics”, the media industry can exploit the productivity of the commons while holding on to the power that comes with ownership and property.

Slutet gott, allting gott?: Ett förbättringsarbete och en fallstudie om smärtskattning av patienter i livets slutskede på en akutsjukvårdsavdelning2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Educated to Learn: How to enhance the education of computer science and informatics2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The very nature of computer science with its constant changes forces those who wish to follow to adapt and react quickly. Large companies invest in being up to date in order to generate revenue and stay active on the market. Universities, on the other hand, need to imply same practices of staying up to date with industry needs in order to produce industry ready engineers. By interviewing former students, now engineers in the industry, and current university staff this thesis aims to learn if there is space for enhancing the education through different lecturing approaches and/or curriculum adaptation and development.

In order to address these concerns a qualitative research has been conducted, focusing on data collection obtained through semi-structured live world interviews. The method used follows the seven stages of research interviewing introduced by Kvale and focuses on collecting and preparing relevant data for analysis. The collected data is transcribed, refined, and further on analyzed in the “Findings and analysis” chapter. The focus of analyzing was answering the three research questions; learning how higher education impacts a Computer Science and Informatics Engineers’ job, how to better undergo the transition from studies to working in the industry and how to develop a curriculum that helps support the previous two. Unaltered quoted extracts are presented and individually analyzed. To paint a better picture a theme-wise analysis is presented summing valuable themes that were repeated throughout the interviewing phase.

The findings obtained imply that there are several factors directly influencing the quality of education. From the student side, it mostly concerns expectation and dedication involving studies, and from the university side it is commitment to the curriculum development process. Due to the time and resource limitations this research provides findings conducted on a narrowed scope, although it can serve as a great foundation for further development; possibly as a PhD research.

Entertainment & Arts’ effect on Hotel & Restaurant Industries: An Empirical Study of Sweden2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the presence of the Arts (the arts, and museums) and Entertainment (Sports) industries and the core of the hospitality industry, being hotels and restaurants, in Sweden. More specifically, it deals with how the development of sport, the arts and museum industries is related to the development of Hotel and Restaurant industries in the country. This has been tested by multiple regression models and results do not reject the first hypothesis of the study which is the positive relationship between the development of Entertainment and Art industries and the growth of ‘Hotels with restaurant, except conference centers’. Nevertheless, only in the model which the dummy variables are applied does the museum industry fail to show any significant relationship for both, the years 2002 and 2010. The results regarding the second hypothesis expressed the growth of sport and art industries and how they are positively significantly associated with the growth of ‘Restaurants’ but affirmed that the museum industry has no considerable association. The results do not also reject the third hypothesis. However the growth of hotel and restaurant industries is not strongly related to the growth of museum industry in one model pertaining to the year 2010.

Developing a decision-making framework for resolving conflicts when selecting windows and blinds2018In: Architectural Engineering and Design Management, ISSN 1745-2007, E-ISSN 1752-7589, p. 1-26Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Windows and blinds play a significant role in both shaping energy consumption and enhancing indoor comfort. But there are still difficulties with selecting windows and blinds due to the existence of potential conflicts between visual comfort, thermal comfort, energy consumption and life-cycle cost. A literature review was conducted with the purpose of developing a decision-making framework that resolves the conflicts, and allows selecting a window and blind design based on trade-off between visual comfort, thermal comfort, energy consumption and life-cycle cost. The decision-making framework was developed by integrating non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II as an optimization algorithm with analytical hierarchy process as a multi-criteria decision-making method. The optimization algorithm considers different window and blind design variables and analyses multiple designs, while the multi-criteria decision-making method ranks the optimization results and selects a trade-off design. An operating package enabled the decision-making framework to be automated. The operating package was obtained by coupling EnergyPlus as a simulation tool and modeFRONTIER as an integration platform. The decision-making framework was developed to select a trade-off window and blind design through intelligent use of simulation in analysing big-data in built environment, energy and cost sectors. Application of the framework ensures the minimum visual and thermal comfort thresholds with the lowest energy demand and cost. Architects and designers can use the framework during the design or renovation phase of residential and commercial buildings.

Application of analytical hierarchy process for selecting an interior window blind2017In: Architectural Engineering and Design Management, ISSN 1745-2007, E-ISSN 1752-7589, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 308-324Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Window blinds have a substantial role in shaping the energy consumption and improving thermal comfort and visual comfort. However, difficulties in selecting a window blind remain, due to existence of potential conflicts between visual, thermal, energy and life cycle cost. To overcome this problem, this study evaluates the performance of interior blinds, including venetian with slat of 0° and 45°, roller and double-pleated blinds with respect to visual, thermal, energy and life cycle cost. Later, the Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is used for selecting the best blind based on trade-off among the visual, thermal, energy and life cycle cost. In using AHP, visual comfort is determined as most important objective with a weight of 52%. The results show that venetian blind (VB) with slat of 0° drawn 100% is the trade-off blind. Accomplishing the sensitivity analysis on blinds’ global weight shows that VB with slat of 0° drawn 100% remains the trade-off blind until the weight of energy and life cycle cost is below 37% and 57%, respectively, and the weight of visual comfort is above 4%. However, changing thermal comfort weight has no impact on ranking of the blinds. This study shows the capability of AHP in managing the conflicts.

    Achieving a trade-off construction solution using BIM, an optimization algorithm, and a multi-criteria decision-making method2019In: Buildings, ISSN 2075-5309, E-ISSN 2075-5309, Vol. 9, no 4, p. 1-14, article id 81Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Energy Performance of Building Directive obligated all European countries to reduce the energy requirements of buildings while simultaneously improving indoor environment quality. Any such improvements not only enhance the health of the occupants and their productivity, but also provide further economic benefits at the national level. Accomplishing this task requires a method that allows building professionals to resolve conflicts between visual and thermal comfort, energy demands, and life-cycle costs. To overcome these conflicts, this study exploits the incorporation of building information modelling (BIM), the design of experiments as an optimization algorithm, and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) into a multi-criteria decision-making method. Any such incorporation can (i) create constructive communication between building professionals, such as architects, engineers, and energy experts; (ii) allow the analysis of the performance of multiple construction solutions with respect to visual and thermal comfort, energy demand, and life-cycle costs; and (iii) help to select a trade-off solution, thereby making a suitable decision. Three types of energy-efficient windows, and five types of ground floors, roofs, and external wall constructions were considered as optimization variables. The incorporation of several methods allowed the analysis of the performance of 375 construction solutions based on a combination of optimization variables, and helped to select a trade-off solution. The results showed the strength of incorporation for analyzing big-data through the intelligent use of BIM and a simulation in the field of the built environment, energy, and costs. However, when applying AHP, the results are strongly contingent on pairwise comparisons.

The Impact of Remittances on Economic Growth: A study of Sub-Saharan Africa2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Remittance flows to Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to increase by 3.3 percent, reaching $34 billion in 2017 according to the World Bank. This study examines the impact of remittances on economic growth in 36 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, this paper will investigate the relationship between GDP per capita growth and remittance. We have used secondary data which has been collected from the World Bank, between the years 1990 and 2012. By using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and simple linear regression estimation methods with country fixed-effects, the empirical results propose that remittance have a negative impact on economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Puzzle between Economic Growth and Income Inequality2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the correlation between income inequality and economic growth in a cross-section of 90 countries from 2002 to 2006. The controversial Kuznets Hypothesis, the economic model that hypothesizes the relationship between inequality and per capita income is an inverted U-shaped curve, is scrutinized and investigated to consider its viability and accuracy. A multiple linear regression model is estimated and the viability of the regression model is supported by several statistical tests. Based on the estimated model, a negative correlation between growth and inequality has been found.

Determination of stresses and forces acting on a Granulator knife by using FE simulation2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Recycling of plastics always plays an important role in keeping our environment better and safe. With the rise in usage of plastics and industrialization, the need for recycling the plastics has become a big business and is getting bigger. This thesis work was done for a company called Rapid Granulator AB, which works with the recycling of plastics as a big trade in Sweden. Like all the industries across the globe are trying to be economical in every way, Rapid Granulator AB wanted to develop an economical design of their high quality granulating knife. For achieving the economical design, they wanted to study the behaviour of the rotating knife during the process of producing plastic granules.

The granulator cutting process was simulated and numerical analysis was done on the rotating knife of a plastic granulator machine by using the finite element code ABAQUS with 3D stress elements to find out the critical stresses and forces acting on the rotating knife. The bolt preload was applied by Abaqus/Standard, and the results of implicit analysis were imported to Abaqus/Explicit for the impact analysis where the flow of stresses on the rotating knife during the impact with materials were simulated and studied. The study was done on knife models of different thickness to see if the thickness of the current knife model can be reduced. Analysis were done also on a knife model assembly with a double sided cutting edge knife to see if the knife model can be used to its full extent. The simulation models and analysis results were given to the company to develop a more economical knife model.

Parameter setting on catalytic controller: Using Design of Experiments and Scanning Electron Microscope Analysis2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis work has been conducted in the Handheld Laboratory at Husqvarna AB with the purpose of finding the parameters responsible for the performance of the catalytic converters used in the test rig. The catalytic converters are used in the test rig during the long term testing of the chain saws to reduce the hydrocarbon content from the exhaust before it enters into the environment.

To perform this research two approaches were carried out. One with Design of Experiment (DOE) and another using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis. In Design of Experiments parameters that are suspected to be influencing the performance of the catalytic converter were refined. Using these parameters a test plan is made with the help of statistical analysis application Minitab and the tests were carried out in the test rig. Using SEM the effects of aging and its effect on microstructure and chemical composition on the catalyst surface was analyzed.

The results from the DoE shows that the exhaust flow, collector diameter and distance to the muffler are responsible for the collection of exhaust. Distance to the muffler and collector length are the factors affecting the conversion of the exhaust. In addition to that exhaust flow is also responsible for the duration of heating coil running time.

The results from the SEM analysis shows that the operating temperature is high due to which there is thermal degradation of catalyst and there is also deactivation due to fouling. Another finding is that the flow on to the catalyst is not uniformly distributed
