Om lagstiftarens passivitet kan rättfärdiga genomförandet av dubbla interna aktieöverlåtelser2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Hur beskriver pedagogerna sitt omsorgsarbete i fritidshemsverksamheten?

Mild traumatic brain injuries: the impact of early intervention on late sequelae2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Aims:

Studies I & II:To assess the incidence of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) in western Sweden and to investigate health-related quality of life and post-concussion symptoms (PCS).

Study III: To test the hypothesis that a programme of early rehabilitation for selected Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) patients would reduce late sequelae.

Study IV: To investigate the parallel reliability, concurrent validity and inter-observer reliability of the Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (PCSQ).

    Methods:

Studies I & II: Data were collected prospectively and retrospectively. 173 patients aged between 16 and 60 and collected consecutively at Södra Älvsborg Hospital received two mailed questionnaires three months and one year after injury.

Study III: 1719 patients were registered at Södra Älvsborg Hospital and 395 MTBI patients were selected. Patients allocated to the control group (n=131) received regular care. Patients assigned to intervention (n=264) were contacted 2-8 weeks (median 3 weeks) after injury and offered rehabilitation. The intervention was designed according to their perceived individual needs. Outcome was measured as the change in the occurrence of PCS, life satisfaction, health-related quality of life and daily activities one year after injury, as compared with before injury for the different groups.

Study IV: In the parallel reliability and concurrent validity study, 35 patients filled in the PCSQ, answering, “Yes” or “No”. The patients were than interviewed to check the certain “Yes” or “No” answers. In the inter-observer study, the observers filled in their ratings independently.

    Results:

Studies I & II: 753 cases were identified, representing an incidence of 546 per 100,000 a year in western Sweden. A statistically-significant correlation was found between an increasing number of PCS and reduced health-related quality of life.

Study III: No statistical differences were found between the intervention and control groups with respect to intervention. Patients who experienced few PCS 2-8 weeks (median 3 weeks) after the injury and declined rehabilitation recovered and returned to their pre-injury status. Patients who suffered several PCS and accepted rehabilitation did not recover during the period of one year.

Study IV: The parallel reliability and concurrent validity ranged from 82-100 per cent of agreement between the two questionnaires. The range of agreement was 93-100 per cent in the inter-observer study.

    Conclusions:

Study I: The incidence of TBI is high in western Sweden, 546 per 100,000.

Study II: There is a statistically-significant correlation between a higher increase in the number of PCS and reduced health-related quality of life.

Study III: In this particular MTBI sample, early active rehabilitation did not change the outcome to a statistically-significant degree.

Study IV. The PCSQ is a reliable and valid instrument for screening PCS after an MTBI.

    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: This study on traumatic brain injury (TBI) is based on prospective and retrospective population based data from a head injury register in Boras.

METHODS: Data was collected from the hospital emergency unit, the discharge register, the regional neurosurgical clinic and the coroner's records during 1 year. This district is mixed urban and rural with a population of 138 000.

RESULTS: The 753 cases identified represent an incidence of 546 per 100 000 which includes deaths (0.7%), hospital admissions (67%) and attendance at the emergency department in patients not admitted (32%). Males (644 per 100 000), had 1.46 higher overall rate than females (442 per 100 000). The external causes were dominated by fall from same level (31%) and fall from different level (27%) followed by traffic accidents (16%) and persons hit by objects (15%).

CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of TBI found in this study is high but well in accordance with earlier published Swedish studies.

Playing the Trump Card: A qualitative rhetorical analysis of President Trump’s crisis communication on Hurricane Maria2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study, a qualitative rhetorical analysis is done on U.S. president Donald Trump’s crisis communication on Hurricane Maria, which was an Atlantic hurricane that struck areas such as Puerto Rico and Dominica in the autumn of 2017. Given that the former is an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the need for effective relief measures by the Trump administration became of particular importance there. However, in the media, the actual response by the administration was widely criticised as being slow and inefficient by actors like the relief group Oxfam and the humanitarian organisation Refugees International. Therefore, this study critically evaluates Trump’s crisis communication strategies on the hurricane to assess their success. The material consists of statements by Trump in both traditional and social media through official remarks and tweets, which are analysed through the crisis communication theories of image repair theory and situational crisis communication theory. In doing so, of interest is also to examine whether any differences can be seen in the strategies used by Trump in these two kinds of media channels.

To address the hurricane, the findings showed that Trump mainly used the crisis communication strategies of corrective action, bolstering, defeasibility and attack accuser from image repair theory and compensation, reminder, ingratiation, excuse and attack the accuser from situational crisis communication theory. Moreover, no distinctive differences were found in which strategies Trump used in the respective channels, even if the attacks on Twitter were often more aggressive. While both positive and negative evaluations could be made of how Trump used these strategies overall, the main conclusion of the study is that his crisis communication was largely ineffective due to the strategies sometimes being contradictory and inconsistent.

Shift?: A qualitative text analysis of the crisis communication in The Volkswagen Sustainability Magazine 20162017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Volkswagen emissions scandal is one of the largest CSR crises in recent times given its scope and severity. From the outset, the manner in which Volkswagen has addressed the crisis and how it is going to be solved has been subject to public scrutiny. This study set out to examine the crisis communication in Volkswagen’s sustainability magazine Shift from 2016 featuring Volkswagen together with some of its internal and external stakeholders like the management and customers to find out what strategies were used by the company to repair its reputation and to assess the success of these strategies. Additionally, of interest was to compare the viewpoints of external stakeholders to that of Volkswagen, while also to investigate what kind of actors and opinions of the crisis that were presented. To answer these questions, a strategic selection of texts from the magazine were analysed through a qualitative text analysis. The theoretical perspectives consisted of the two crisis communication theories of image repair theory and situational crisis communication theory.

The findings of the study indicate that the strategies used by Volkswagen to address the crisis do not seem very successful in general. Even if the most common strategy by Volkswagen is to discuss potential solutions to the crisis, these solutions are mainly oriented towards solving the crisis in a long-term perspective through a development of new vehicles. The biggest difference in comparison to external stakeholders is that they instead seem more concerned with solving the crisis in a shorter perspective through increased compensation to customers, for instance. Another finding is that a preference for more elitist stakeholders in the magazine could be due to a strategic choice by Volkswagen to avoid unfavourable reviews and use leaders as a tool for inspiring change. The main conclusion of the study is that work still needs to be done before Volkswagen can claim to have achieved a shift in the company’s sustainability communication. To do so, Volkswagen needs to take more responsibility for the crisis and to pay even more attention to the opinions of its different stakeholder groups.

Medication management in municipality-based healthcare: A time and motion study of nurses2018In: Home Healthcare Now, ISSN 2374-4529, Vol. 36, no 4, p. 238-246Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this observational time and motion study was to increase our understanding of how nurses in home healthcare currently distribute their work time with a focus on the medication management process. The research was conducted in four municipalities in the southern part of Sweden. Participants were nurses working in home healthcare. The study measured proportion of time, comparison of proportions of time, proportion of time spent multitasking, and rate of interruptions per hour. Of total observed time, 20.4% was spent on medication management and of these tasks the highest proportion of time was spent on communications and dispensing medications. Nurses in nursing homes spent more time (23.0% vs. 17.4%, p = 0.001) on medication management than nurses in private homes. Nurses spent 47.9% of their time completing tasks with someone else, including patients, but had minimal interaction with prescribers. We observed a rate of 1.2 (95% CI 1.1-1.4) interruptions per hour on average and 30% of all interruptions occurred during medication management tasks. Nurses spent 3.7% of their time multitasking. Interruptions while performing medication-related tasks were common, as well as multitasking. Causes and consequences of the results need to be addressed in order to improve the safety of medication management for patients receiving municipality-based home care.

Older persons’ experiences regarding evaluation of their medication treatment: An interview study in Sweden2019In: Health Expectations, ISSN 1369-6513, E-ISSN 1369-7625, Vol. 22, no 6, p. 1294-1303Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Older persons with polypharmacy are at increased risk of harm from medications, and this issue is a global patient safety challenge. Harm may arise at all stages of medication use and may cause hospital admission, additional resource uti ‐lization and lower patient satisfaction. Older persons’ participation in their own care may increase patient safety. Their views on the evaluation of their medication treat ‐ment, and their own involvement in it, are crucial yet poorly understood.

Objectives: To identify opportunities to make the medication use process safer, we explored and described older persons’ experiences of evaluation of their medicationtreatment.

Design: Semi‐structured interviews were performed with 20 community‐dwelling older persons (age 75‐91 years) in Sweden. Data were analysed using inductive quali ‐tative content analysis.

Results: These older persons reported having a responsibility to engage in their med ‐ication evaluations, although some felt unable to do so or considered themselves un ‐concerned. Evaluation, in their experience, was facilitated by continuity of care and an invitation to participate. However, some older persons experienced not receivinga comprehensive medication evaluation.

Discussion and conclusion: Older persons want to be actively involved in their medi ‐cation evaluations, and this may represent an underutilized resource in the pursuit of patient safety. Their trust in physicians to undertake evaluations on a regular basis, although that does not necessarily occur, may cause harm. Patient safety could benefit from a co‐production approach to medication evaluations, with health‐care professionals explicitly sharing information with older persons and agreeing on re ‐sponsibilities related to on‐going medication treatment.

Upplevelsen av att leva med långvarig neuropatisk smärta efter ryggmärgsskada: En litteraturöversikt2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury is a complex condition affecting the person's mental, physical, social and existential well-being. A good response from the health and medical service is important for persons concerned with understanding their situation and being able to adapt to a life of pain.

Aim: The purpose was to describe the experience of living with chronic neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury.

Method: A literature review with inductive approach was conducted. The databases CINAHL, PsycINFO and MEDLINE were used to make the literature search. The result is based on nine articles of qualitative method and one with a mixed method where only the qualitative result was used.

Result: The literature review has been generated in two main themes: The need for support, acceptance and management and six sub-themes: Experience of support from health care, experience of social support, experience of acceptance, experience of being able to act, the experience of management strategies, the experiences of hope.

Conclusion: People concerned with chronic neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury experienced lack of knowledge and understanding from the health care. Increased knowledge from nursing staff about neuropathic pain can lead to people who are affected more easily handle the pain problem.

Vi får bestämma nästan överallt!: Elevers berättelser om delaktighet och inflytande över fritidshemmets aktiviteter2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Public buildings are considered to be the most power consuming buildings in the world. To reduce power consumption earlier studies propose greater use of natural daylight to illuminate surroundings, hallways and areas where to preform common work tasks and where artificial lighting is only used for the actual work space and places where higher light levels are required. In office buildings with available daylight, it has been shown that people have a greater general well-being, improved health, reduced absenteeism and increased productivity.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how different room configurations can increase the amount of daylight in offices. The essay is based on an experimental study in the form of a questionnaire in which participants have evaluated and documented their perceptions of the visual properties regarding daylight. The evaluation has been carried out with scale models of different room configurations, but with the same window size and window positions.

The results show that a room configuration with embrasures provides the most effective daylight harvesting. Embrasures contribute with maximum visibility, brightness and provide maximum light scattering. Room configurations with rounded corners have proven to give the most even light ratio between the light and dark areas of a room where the light is also spread most evenly along the walls. According to an evaluation of the visual properties of daylight, a room with rounded corners is perceived to be the most comfortable room and provide the softest and gentlest light impression.

The study is limited to evaluate the amount of daylight and the visual properties of daylight in large office spaces designed based on energy-efficient passive houses with thick facade walls.

Brand Avoidance: A study focusing on Marketing Communication within the Sportswear Industry in Sweden2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Until today, branding in positive forms has been widely researched. It has been studied why consumers choose certain brands and how companies can increase brand loyalty. On the other hand, literature lacks studies on negative branding, which now becomes more interesting to gain more knowledge about. One knows that it is of equal importance to investigate why people would avoid a brand as what makes them purchase a brand. Hence, the topic of anti-consumption and in particular brand avoidance is something that demands more research.

    Purpose

In 2016 Knittel, Beurer and Berndt conducted a research on brand avoidance on products and came to the conclusion that advertising is an additional factor affecting brand avoidance. However, brand avoidance has not yet been researched on a specific industry. Today’s sports industry spends a tremendous amount of money on advertising, thus it is of great interest to investigate how advertising can have a negative effect on the sports companies. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate and gain deeper understanding of what components of advertising affect brand avoidance within the sportswear industry.

    Method

This thesis was best researched by an exploratory study using a qualitative and abductive approach. Interviews and focus groups have been used as data collection methods. The interviews were held with different companies within the sportswear industry and provided data to create focus groups from as well as first visions on crucial components within advertising. The focus groups provided further understanding on which components that could contribute to brand avoidance due to advertising from a consumer’s perspective.

    Conclusion

Findings of this thesis show that several components of advertising can lead to brand avoidance within the sportswear industry. The authors conclude the thesis by presenting an extended and revised model of advertising components of brand avoidance, whereas the advertising category is renamed to marketing communication. In total, eight components were identified: content, collaborations, music, channel, trustworthiness, frequency, timing, and response. The revised framework provides new information within brand avoidance for both academics and marketing managers within the sportswear industry.

Patient or customer? Interpretation, accessibility, and participation for deaf people in Sweden2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The key aim of the study presented in this poster is to illustrate the nature of accessibility and participation in the current provision of the Swedish county councils’ interpretation services for young deaf adults. Since interpretation services are affiliated to the health care system, deaf people in Sweden are often considered and treated as patients in need of assistance for accessing different contexts through Swedish Sign Language (STS) interpreters. The interpretation services are however multifaceted: at times facilitative, for example when deaf people listen to a public lecture thanks to the provision of interpreters, in other contexts obstructive, for example due to the administrative load surrounding it. The study focused upon in this paper highlights this complicated issue by presenting analysis of data from the Swedish Research Council supported project PAL, Participation for All (www.ju.se/ccd/pal), that focuses upon the trajectories of schooling and the post-school situation of young deaf people in Sweden. Taking both a sociocultural perspective and a decolonial framework on human communication, learning and identity, young deaf individuals’ life pathways are currently being mapped through an ethnographic approach in project PAL.

A specific issue that has emerged in the on-going analysis is the importance of and the ways in which STS interpreters shape different forms of deaf people’s experiences and participation. One key preliminary finding is that although deaf people are often treated as patients, they are simultaneously tasked with the provision of information, preparation, and organization of the activities where the interpreters are needed. The latter results in that they get positioned as active customers of the interpretation services. This, thus, becomes a contradictory treatment of deaf people: on the one hand there is unequal power relations that positions deaf people in passive roles with limited, if any, possibilities to impact the interpreter services, and on the other hand they are given major responsibility for it, requiring them to be active and well-informed.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents results from a study based on archival data from periodicals published by three Swedish non-governmental organizations (NGOs) active in the field of deafness and hard of hearing. A sociohistorical analysis of the material, which covers more than a century, from 1890 to 2010, highlights that technologies have specifically impacted issues concerned with communication and identity. The article presents key topics that have been identified, as well as similarities and differences between the NGOs with regard to their views on and interest in visually oriented and audiologically oriented technologies and methods of communication. In addition, the analysis shows how deafness, based on different perspectives, can be understood as both identity and disability and how technologies and methods of communication impact identification processes.

”Va sa han?”: communicative strategies in educational environments where one participant has cochlear implantsManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The number of pupils with cochlear implant (CI) has seen a sharp increase in public schools in Sweden. This study focuses on communicative strategies in inclusive classrooms where pupils with CI are members. The empirical ethnographic data comes from two mainstream classrooms in Sweden where pupils and adults use a range of technologies, and strategies, (co)creating opportunities for communication and learning in everyday classroom life. The analyses indicate that pupils with CIs are responsible for their own communicative participation in mainstream classrooms (when they can't make sense of or don't hear oral talk), while their right to choose or regulate communication channels are not uncommonly curtailed by the adults. Different technologies play an important role in inclusive classrooms where pupils with CIs are members but these at the same time sometimes create barriers for participation. They cannot therefore be seen as a panacea for pupils with CI in inclusive educational settings.

    Abstract [en]

Different technologies are commonly used in mainstream classrooms to teach pupils who wear surgically implanted cochlear hearing aids. We focus on these technologies, their application, how pupils react to them, and how they affect mainstream classrooms in Sweden. Our findings indicate that language ideologies play out in specific ways in such technified environments. The hegemonic position wielded by adults with regard to the use of technology usage has specific implications for pupils with cochlear implants.

Förekomst av omvårdnadsdata i nationella kvalitetsregister2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The vitamin D endocrine system modulates an arsenal of important biological functions in more than 30 different tissues in short- and long-term perspectives. Two membrane receptors and one nuclear receptor are suggested to be involved in the vitamin D signaling system, but the function and physiological relevance of the receptors are debated. The complexity of the vitamin D endocrine system makes it necessary to combine experimental data with in silico simulations to get a holistic view of vitamin D-dependent regulation of tissue and cell physiology. This review focus on binding characteristics for the three putative vitamin D receptors and proposes a future systems biology approach including mathematical modeling that will be helpful together with experimental methods in depicting antitumoral and other biological effects promoted by the vitamin D endocrine system.

Deadlock Free Routing in Mesh Networks on Chip with Regions2009Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

There is a seemingly endless miniaturization of electronic components, which has enabled designers to build sophisticated computing structureson silicon chips. Consequently, electronic systems are continuously improving with new and more advanced functionalities. Design complexity ofthese Systems on Chip (SoC) is reduced by the use of pre-designed cores. However, several problems related to the interconnection of coresremain. Network on Chip (NoC) is a new SoC design paradigm, which targets the interconnect problems using classical network concepts. Still,SoC cores show large variance in size and functionality, whereas several NoC benefits relate to regularity and homogeneity.

This thesis studies some network aspects which are characteristic to NoC systems. One is the issue of area wastage in NoC due to cores of varioussizes. We elaborate on using oversized regions in regular mesh NoC and identify several new design possibilities. Adverse effects of regions oncommunication are outlined and evaluated by simulation.

Deadlock freedom is an important region issue, since it affects both the usability and performance of routing algorithms. The concept of faultyblocks, used in deadlock free fault-tolerant routing algorithms has similarities with rectangular regions. We have improved and adopted one suchalgorithm to provide deadlock free routing in NoC with regions. This work also offers a methodology for designing topology agnostic, deadlockfree, highly adaptive application specific routing algorithms. The methodology exploits information about communication among tasks of anapplication. This is used in the analysis of deadlock freedom, such that fewer deadlock preventing routing restrictions are required.

A comparative study of the two proposed routing algorithms shows that the application specific algorithm gives significantly higher performance. But, the fault-tolerant algorithm may be preferred for systems requiring support for general communication. Several extensions to our work areproposed, for example in areas such as core mapping and efficient routing algorithms. The region concept can be extended for supporting reuse ofa pre-designed NoC as a component in a larger hierarchical NoC.

Modelling and Evaluation of a Network on Chip Architecture using SDL2003In: 11th International SDL Forum Stuttgart, Germany, July 1-4, 2003, 2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Network on Chip (NoC) is a new paradigm for designing large and complex systems on chips (SoCs). In this paradigm, a packet switched network is provided for on-chip communication among cores. NoC paradigm provides the required scalability and reusability to reduce design time of SoCs. A NoC simulator is an important tool required to support development of designs based on a NoC architecture. In this paper, we describe the design of such a simulator using System Description Language (SDL). Features of SDL for representing structural hierarchy using blocks, concurrent processes and dynamic generation of processes, communication channels of user defined data types and timers are useful for modelling a NoC architecture at various levels of communication protocols. We use an event driven SDL simulator to carry out interesting experiments to evaluate various architectural options like buffer size in switches, and their effect on the performance like delay and packet loss.

On Connecting Cores to Packet Switched On-Chip Networks: A Case Study with MicroBlaze Processor Cores2004In: 7th IEEE Workshop DDECS 04, Slovakia, 18-21 April, 2004, 2004Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The idea of using on chip packet switched networks for interconnecting a large number of IP cores is very practical for designing complex SoCs since it gives possibility of not only reusing IP cores but also the interconnection infrastructure. However, the real effort and time in using these Networks on Chip (NoC) goes in developing interfaces for connecting cores to the on-chip network. Standardization of interfaces for these cores can speed up the development process. In this paper, we present our work of developing an interface for a standard bus called OPB to the on-chip network. Any cores having OPB as the wrapper can reuse this interface. The paper also describes implementation of a small NoC prototype using this idea on an FPGA platform. The performance measurements on the prototype not only demonstrate the feasibility of NoC implementation but also demonstrate that FPGA based NoC implementation will be able to meet the performance requirements in many application areas. Specifically, we show that a core can communicate 2.5 MPackets/sec to a neighboring core.

Corrections to Chen and Chui's Fault Tolerant Routing Algorithm for Mesh Networks2007In: Journal of information science and engineering, ISSN 1016-2364, Vol. 23, no 6, p. 1649-1662Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Chen and Chiu published a fault tolerant routing algorithm for mesh topology net-works which they claimed was deadlock free in the presence of multiple faults. In this paper we give a counter-example to show that their Message-Route algorithm fails to provide deadlock free routing in a 2 dimensional mesh network. We also point out certain cases where the algorithm fails to route messages to their destinations. We identify an error in the proof of the main theorem in their paper which was used for proving the property of deadlock freeness. Changes to their algorithm are proposed to make it deadlock free and complete. We also discuss a new application of fault tolerant routing algorithms for non-homogeneous 2-dimensional mesh topology networks for on-chip communication.

Design Issues and Performance Evaluation of Mesh NoC with Regions2005In: 23rd Norchip Conference, Oulu, Finland, November 2005, 2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mesh topology is popular for Network on Chip (NoC) architectures because it has many desirable fabrication and performance properties, due to fixed sized rectangular tiles for resources. Region concept has been proposed to handle cores with larger size than the tiles. In this paper, we present an elaboration of the region concept, pointing out new design issues and possibilities. Special routing algorithms are required for deadlock free communication to handle blockage introduced by the regions. We show that fault tolerant algorithms developed for multi-computer systems can be adapted for this purpose. By simulation, we study the introduction of rectangular regions in a 7X7 NoC. Our study shows that the position and orientation of regions have a strong influence on achieved network performance.

Processor evaluation cube: A classification and survey of processor evaluation techniques2004Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Selecting appropriate hardware resources corresponding to the application is an important task for design of an embedded system or a SoC. A large number of techniques have been proposed in literature to select a processor matching with the application requirements. In this report, we propose a framework called Processor Evaluation Cube (PEC) which helps in systematic classification and comparison of various processor evaluation techniques. The three axes of PEC are: Analysis, Architecture and Abstraction. The Analysis axis distinguishes methods employing static analysis or simulation; Architecture axis distinguishes methods evaluating single processor or multiprocessor computing platforms; Abstraction axis distinguishes methods employing clock true evaluation or higher level execution time estimation techniques. Our survey not only puts the existing techniques in proper perspective but also points to the weaknesses in the existing techniques which need to be removed if these techniques have to be used for design of multi-processor SoC (System on Chip) and Network on Chip (NoC) systems. We observe during our survey that the techniques for single processor evaluation are getting adapted for evaluation of multiprocessor platforms. We also note that there are no techniques developed or proposed for low level static analysis of multi-processor platforms due to complexity of such an evaluation. Although many different evaluation approaches may fall in the same category in PEC classification they have significant differences in intermediate descriptions of application, architecture and performance parameters.

A Multi-Level Routing Scheme and Router Architecture to support Hierarchical Routing in Large Network on Chip Platforms2010In: 4th Workshop on Highly Parallel Processing on a Chip (HPPC 2010), 2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The concept of hierarchical networks is useful for designing a large heterogeneous NoC by reusing predesigned small NoCs as subnets. It can also be helpful when analyzing and designing a large NoC as interconnection of subnets at a higher level of abstraction. Hierarchical deadlock-free routing is required to enable deadlock-free interconnection of sub-networks with different internal routing algorithms. In this paper we show that multi-level addressing is a cost-effective implementation option for hierarchical deadlock-free routing. We propose a two-level routing scheme, which is not only efficient, but also  enables co-existence of algorithmic and table-based implementation in one router. A hierarchical view of the network simplifies addressing of network nodes and address decoding in the router. Synthesis results show that a 2-level hierarchical router design for an 8x8 NoC, can reduce area and power requirements by  up to ~20%, as compared to a router for the flat network. This work also proposes a new possibility for increasing the number of nodes available for subnet-to-subnet interfaces, while keeping the properties of hierarchical deadlock-freedom. We evaluate and discuss the communication performance in a 2-level hierarchical network for various subnet interface set-ups and traffic situations. A cycle accurate simulator has been developed and used for this purpose.

HiRA: A methodology for deadlock free routing in hierarchical networks on chip2009In: Networks-on-Chip, 2009. NoCS 2009. 3rd ACM/IEEE International Symposium on, IEEE Computer Society , 2009, p. 2-11Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Complexity of designing large and complex NoCs can be reduced/managed by using the concept of hierarchical networks. In this paper, we propose a methodology for design of deadlock free routing algorithms for hierarchical networks, by combining routing algorithms of component subnets. Specifically, our methodology ensures reachability and deadlock freedom for the complete network if routing algorithms for subnets are deadlock free. We evaluate and compare the performance of hierarchical routing algorithms designed using our methodology with routing algorithms for corresponding flat networks. We show that hierarchical routing, combining best routing algorithm for each subnet, has a potential for providing better performance than using any single routing algorithm. This is observed for both synthetic as well as traffic from real applications. We also demonstrate, by measuring jitter in throughput, that hierarchical routing algorithms leads to smoother flow of network traffic. A router architecture that supports scalable table-based routing is briefly outlined.

Deadlock free routing algorithms for irregular mesh topology NoC systems with rectangular regions2008In: Journal of systems architecture, ISSN 1383-7621, E-ISSN 1873-6165, Vol. 54, no 3-4, p. 427-440Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The simplicity of regular mesh topology NoC architecture leads to reductions in design time and manufacturing cost. A weakness of the regular shaped architecture is its inability to efficiently support cores of different sizes. A proposed way in literature to deal with this is to utilize the region concept, which helps to accommodate cores larger than the tile size in mesh topology NoC architectures. Region concept offers many new opportunities for NoC design, as well as provides new design issues and challenges. One of the most important among these is the design of an efficient deadlock free routing algorithm. Available adaptive routing algorithms developed for regular mesh topology can not ensure freedom from deadlocks. In this paper, we list and discuss many new design issues which need to be handled for designing NoC systems incorporating cores larger than the tile size. We also present and compare two deadlock free routing algorithms for mesh topology NoC with regions. The idea of the first algorithm is borrowed from the area of fault tolerant networks, where a network topology is rendered irregular due to faults in routers or links, and is adapted for the new context. We compare this with an algorithm designed using a methodology for design of application specific routing algorithms for communication networks. The application specific routing algorithm tries to maximize adaptivity by using static and dynamic communication requirements of the application. Our study shows that the application specific routing algorithm not only provides much higher adaptivity, but also superior performance as compared to the other algorithm in all traffic cases. But this higher performance for the second algorithm comes at a higher area cost for implementing network routers.
