    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

Despite extensive attempts to enhance women's entrepreneurship in Germany, a gender gap continues to exist. This article sets out to analyse the representation of women's entrepreneurship in German media, by analysing how it is depicted in newspapers and how this changes over time. Images transported in media might regulate the nature of women's entrepreneurship, as they contain information about ‘typical’ and ‘socially desirable’ behaviour of women as well as of entrepreneurs. This article contributes to developing an understanding of the relevance of media representation of the entrepreneurship phenomenon for influencing the propensity towards entrepreneurial activity.

Legitimacy-borrowing and bricolage by journalism entrepreneurs: From institutional ‘dopes’ to new industry pioneers?2016Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

There is an unsatisfied need to understand the underlying mechanisms through which industrial sectors shape entrepreneurship phenomena. In this paper, we elaborate on the legitimacy-building mechanisms used by entrepreneurs in media industries. We suggest that in highly institutionalized contexts, start-up entrepreneurs may build trust in their ventures by borrowing sociopolitical legitimacy from neighboring fields. We also analyze the implications that these mechanisms may have on the cognitive and competitive configuration of the disrupted industry set-up. Our results propose that bricolage-entrepreneurs may succeed not only in developing a competitive advantage but also in creating a truly native, new legitimacy base in the media industry. We illustrate our theoretical analysis with the growing phenomenon of journalism entrepreneurship.

Business growth in practice: Navigating dualities in the process of development2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Studying business growth from inception into establishment is challenging. We took up this challenge and studied a firm’s developmental process over the span of almost 17 years by analysing more than 860 weekly reports. Drawing on recent developments in the entrepreneurship-as-practice literature, our attention was on the activities and practices that supported the firm’s sustained growth. We find that the firm’s overall activity system periodically shifts in temporal focus between future, presence and past by navigating through four different dualities: (1) detail vs efficiency, (2) rigidity vs flexibility, (3) pressure vs relief and (4) prospection vs retrospection. As we emphasize temporal aspects, our findings extend current business growth theory by adding the dimension of past-oriented renewing to future- and presence-oriented entrepreneuring. We encourage practitioners to implement renewing practices during which they actively renovate and modernize obsolescent parts of their business.

Small Firm Growth2010Inngår i: Foundations and Trends in Entrepreneurship, ISSN 1551-3114, Vol. 6, nr 2, s. 69-166Artikkel, forskningsoversikt (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We review and discuss the literature on small firm growth with an intention to provide a useful vantage point for new research studies regarding this important phenomenon. We first discuss conceptual and methodological issues that represent critical choices for those who research growth and which make it challenging to compare results from previous studies. The substantial review of past research is organized into four sections representing two smaller and two larger literatures. The first of the latter focuses on internal and external drivers of small firm growth. Here we find that much has been learnt and that many valuable generalizations can be made. However, we also conclude that more research of the same kind is unlikely to yield much. While interactive and non-linear effects may be worth pursuing it is unlikely that any new and important growth drivers or strong, linear main effects would be found. The second "large" literature deals with organizational life-cycles or stages of development. While deservedly criticized for unwarranted determinism and weak empirics this type of approach addresses problems of high practical and also theoretical relevance, and should not be shunned by researchers. We argue that with a change in the fundamental assumptions and improved empirical design, research on the organizational and managerial consequences of growth is an important line of inquiry. With this, we overlap with one of the "smaller" literatures, namely studies focusing on the effects of growth. We argue that studies too often assume that growth equals success. We advocate instead the use of growth as an intermediary variable that influences more fundamental goals in ways that should be carefully examined rather than assumed. The second "small" literature distinguishes between different modes or forms of growth, including, e.g., organic vs. acquisition-based growth, and international expansion. We note that modes of growth is an important topic that has been under studied in the growth literature, whereas in other branches of research aspects of it may have been studied intensely, but not primarily from a growth perspective. In the final section we elaborate on ways forward for research on small firm growth. We point at rich opportunities for researchers who look beyond drivers of growth, where growth is viewed as a homogenous phenomenon assumed to unambiguously reflect success, and instead focus on growth as a process and a multi-dimensional phenomenon, as well as on how growth relates to more fundamental outcomes.

Family businesses are known to rely on informal ways of working for maintaining their entrepreneurial spirit over time. In recent decades, scholars have challenged conventional planning-approaches to strategy and proposed alternatives to it, such as wayfinding. This approach centers around social practices, focusing on strategy- making unfolding from everyday activities. Drawing on socialization theory and a real-time case study in a family business, we elaborate upon three socialization processes to better understand entrepreneurial strategy- making: Strategy as embedded in daily practice; renewal when family members manage together; and strategy- making as an ordinary part of family business life. This paper’s contribution lies in exploring socialization theory for improving our understanding of the unintentional and indirect aspects of strategy-making.

If policy (half-heartedly) says ‘yes’, but patriarchy says ‘no’: How the gendered institutional context in Pakistan restricts women entrepreneurship2018Inngår i: Contextual embeddedness of women's entrepreneurship: Going beyond a gender neutral approach / [ed] S. Abstract [en]

Many governments around the world aim to enhance entrepreneurship through different policy measures (Easterly, 2005). Empowering women to participate in entrepreneurship might help in reducing poverty (Hausmann et al., 2009). Also the Government of Pakistan (GoP) has recognized the importance of involving women into the country’s economic development. It claims to be positively committed to fostering women’s entrepreneurship and has taken various actions to promote it. While many studies have assessed measures to enhance women’s entrepreneurship in emerging economies, e.g. regarding training or financing, little attention has been paid so far to assessing the situation in Pakistan (Rehman & Azam Roomi, 2012). Evidence for how policy programmes influence entrepreneurial activities in Pakistan is also missing, as the country has a history of lacking reliable data (e.g., Ali, 2006). Yet, institutional analyses of gender-related policies are important, as institutional contexts can be a liability or asset (Welter, 2011).

The importance of industry context for new venture internationalisation: A case study from the life sciences2013Inngår i: Journal of International Entrepreneurship, ISSN 1570-7385, E-ISSN 1573-7349, Vol. 11, nr 4, s. 297-319Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

During internationalisation, international new ventures in the life sciences industry face distinct challenges. For example, high product development costs push companies into early internationalisation to increase sales turnover and recover investments. At the same time, financial and managerial resource limitations and the demand to adjust to local regulations render internationalisation difficult. To date, relatively little is known about how different industry contexts influence new venture internationalisation processes. This paper presents an in-depth case study of the internationalisation process of a Swedish new venture from the life sciences industry to fill this gap. The findings outline factors in the industry context that affect the internationalisation process, with specific emphasis on entrepreneurs and their networks, leading to several propositions and a model of life sciences new venture internationalisation.

The changing role of network ties and critical capabilities in an international new venture’s early development2017Inngår i: The International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal, ISSN 1554-7191, E-ISSN 1555-1938, Vol. 3, nr 1, s. 113-140Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The importance of networks for firm internationalization has been pointed out for several decades. Especially for small and new firms, networks have been found to be an important tool to gain access to resources and to overcome liabilities of newness, smallness and foreignness. Yet, there is a lack of understanding regarding which types of capabilities are developed through networking and how and when networks are used for growth purposes overtime. The aim of this article is to explore how and when the individual key actors’ competence bases and networking activities create, develop and deploy critical capabilities during different phases of an international new venture’s early development. The article is based on a longitudinal, in-depth case study ofa Swedish international new venture from the medical-technology industry. We find that the development process is greatly affected by the key individual actors’ various competences, existing network ties and their leveraging of different indirect ties during the pre-founding, start-up and establishment of production phases. During the commercialization and sales growth phases, however, many new network ties are developed. The heterogeneity of the individual actors’ backgrounds plays an important role during the different developmental phases. We conclude by advancing a number of propositions inrelation to how critical capabilities are created, developed and deployed through networking during different developmental phases.

How do companies achieve sustained and profitable business growth?: Business models in continuously growing companies2009Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with a fundamental question for managers and policy makers—how do companies manage to achieve sustained and profitable business growth, especially in times of uncertainty? We propose that continuously growing companies manage to dynamically shape, adapt and renew their business models to fuel growth over time. Specifically, informed by the dynamic capabilities and the strategy-as-practiced perspectives, we develop a framework of business models for understanding how, in practice, business models are developed, adjusted, and if necessary, reconfigured in companies displaying successful continuous growth. Using in-depth, longitudinal evidence from a study of 25 companies, we identify five characteristics as crucial to the business models of companies which manage to successfully grow despite an uncertain world. For each characteristic, we identify the underlying dynamic capabilities and core practices, and draw implications for practice and research.

International Corporate Entrepreneurship among SMEs: A test of Stevenson’s notion of Entrepreneurial Management2015Inngår i: Journal of small business management (Print), ISSN 0047-2778, E-ISSN 1540-627X, Vol. 53, nr 3, s. 780-800Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Despite increasing attention devoted to international entrepreneurship, little is known about firm-level entrepreneurship carried out by established small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in international markets. We apply the opportunity-based conceptualization of “Entrepreneurial Management” by Howard Stevenson to international corporate entrepreneurship activities of SMEs. We hypothesize that the different dimensions of Stevenson's theory have a positive impact on SMEs' international corporate entrepreneurship. We test the hypotheses on a longitudinal sample of international SMEs. Our results show the expected positive effects of some, but not all, aspects of Stevenson's theory. Thereby, the paper suggests more precise boundary conditions of the theory and contributes to the literature on international corporate entrepreneurship by SMEs.

Teaching ethnic minority entrepreneurship through parables2013Inngår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, ISSN 1476-1297, E-ISSN 1741-8054, Vol. 18, nr 2, s. 154-172Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Ethnic minority entrepreneurship operates in increasingly complex and ambiguous environments. Thus there is the need for entrepreneurship educators to prepare students to handle ambiguity and to develop a more comprehensive, contextualised and individualised understanding of ethnic minority entrepreneurship. In this paper, we present parables as a pedagogical tool to facilitate an understanding of ethnic minority entrepreneurship through the embracing and tackling of ambiguity by students. This is done through student interviews conducted with immigrant entrepreneurs in Sweden, followed by the construction of parables based on the interviews. The liberatory type of pedagogy where the student is the storyteller highlights multiple layers of meaning, including power, hegemony and exploitation in the interpretation and teaching about ethnic minority entrepreneurship. Such parable pedagogy encourages entrepreneurship educators to give more emphasis to ethnic minority entrepreneurship in the content and design of their curriculum.

Discouraging stereotypes? US newspaper coverage of ethnic minority entrepreneurs before the economic downturn2013Inngår i: Journalism - Theory, Practice & Criticism, ISSN 1464-8849, E-ISSN 1741-3001, Vol. 14, nr 8, s. 1059-1075Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

While research shows that ethnic minority entrepreneurs make a relevant contribution to economies, academic studies often convey a rather negative image of their entrepreneurship as necessity- rather than opportunity-driven, and with little innovation. This study examined the US newspaper coverage of these entrepreneurs during the five years before the economic downturn. It found that only one-tenth of the articles were negative, while two-thirds were positive. Two-thirds of the articles mentioned assistance programs that could help entrepreneurs. The vast majority of the articles presented positive frames of minority entrepreneurs and their contributions. This study found that newspapers can be important sources for ethnic minority individuals interested in becoming entrepreneurs and provide information useful in formulating public policy.
