Succession and Post-Succession Conflicts in Family Firms: A Multi-perspective Investigation into Succession and Post-Succession Conflicts in Multigenerational Family Firms2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

    Background

The succession process of a family firm is associated with a number of challenges, and hence a potential for conflicts is strongly pronounced. However, succession is of utmost importance for a family firm, as it is the only way to avoid a company closure in the long run. Previous literature has already extensively researched the phenomena of conflicts in family firms. However, there is a lack of research that looks from a multi-perspective lens into the context of succession and post-succession conflicts. Therefore, in the present research, we examine how family businesses experience and cope conflicts that appear after a successfully mastered intrafamily succession.

    Purpose

This study aims to advance the understanding of conflicts in family firms related explicitly to the context of successions and post-successions. Hence, the thesis aims to determine how conflicts that appear in these contexts are experienced and how they are coped with.

    Method

The study follows a qualitative methodological approach and an inductive analysis. The sample consists of three companies and 14 research respondents, and the data was collected with semi-structured qualitative interviews. Afterwards, the data was coded, and the emerging patterns and themes have been formulated and presented with a general model. Doing so, the focus was on patterns of succession- and post-succession-related conflicts and their coping strategies.

    Conclusion

Our findings reveal that succession and post-succession-related conflicts are experienced as evoked intangible and provoked tangible conflicts and these conflicts are consciously as well as unconsciously coped with. Furthermore, our findings suggest that succession and post-succession family firm conflicts appear as conflict loops. Hence, the coping mechanisms identified and presented are helpful to solve a conflict, but the loop can hardly be escaped.

Vårdadministration: - En studie om hur Region Jönköpings läns kliniker tar tillvara på vårdadministratörers kompetens2024Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 20 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

BackgroundThe professional role of a healthcare administrator stretches far back in history. The profession has gone from doctors writing assistant to today's medical care administrator. In line with the development and digitalization of technology, the tasks within the professional role have developed and expanded. This requires a higher level of administrative competence from today's healthcare administrators.

    Purpose

The purpose of our study is to investigate how the clinics within Region Jönköping County use the competence of the healthcare administrators.

    Method

We have chosen to use both a quantitative and qualitative method. We have made an online survey with both open and closed questions. The selection was limited to the healthcare administrators who work at the clinics within Region Jönköping County. The online survey was created in esMaker and compiled in both text, tables and diagrams.

    Conclusion

The study gave a clear picture of the fact that the healthcare administrator as a professional role has a wide variety of job assignments. We received over 40 different assignments, many of the respondents have several different tasks, which requires a wide competence. A clear majority of the respondents feel that they are allowed to use their skills in their workplace. They also feel that their employer takes their skills into account when they allot assignments.

Moving Beyond Sustainability: Change Agents Perceptions on a Regenerative Transition2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Climate change has become the most pressing challenge of our time. Current business approaches to sustainability are instrumental that may portray sustainability as a source of corporate profit rather than acting for change beyond mitigation and adaptation. A regenerative approach to sustainability challenges current practices and aims to create and strengthen environmental and social well-being.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of how change agents can be a part of a regenerative sustainability transition. This is done by investigating the attitudes of change agents to such a transition. The aim is to contribute to theoretical and practical implications of organizational change theory, addressing the phenomena of organizational regenerative sustainability.

Method: The paradigm of this study is of critical realist nature with an exploratory research design. An abductive model inspired the research approach, and semi-structured interviews were performed to collect primary data. A thematic analysis was then performed to draw conclusions from this study.

Results: The analysis uncovered both welcoming and reluctant attitudes toward a regenerative transition. The welcoming attitudes were inherently more optimistic toward a regenerative transition, whereas change agents with reluctant attitudes identified more challenges and barriers for implementing a regenerative transition simultaneously as their perspectives were more business-centered. When weighing the evidence, it appears that the welcoming attitudes are relatively more likely to have a positive impact on implementing regenerative change as well as succeed with the initiation.

Leading in Stressful Environments: How do Football Coaches Cope with Stress?2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Background: Football accounts for 43% of the sports market share, more than any other single sport. The pressure and stress associated with being a sports leader indicate that the football coaches encounter and work with occupational stress more regularly than corporate leaders. Hence, football coaches appear to be highly appropriate to acquire insights from. Although there is extensive literature on stress, the research on football coaches is lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to deepen the understanding of leading in a stressful environment. The aim is to acquire useful insights into various existing stress coping methods that reduce the negative impact that stress may have on contemporary leaders.

Method: The interpretivism paradigm is applied to this research as well as an abductive approach to grounded theory. The research is based on a single case study where primary data is acquired through semi-structured interviews with three football coaches and three players. Furthermore, the thematic analysis approach is applied when analyzing the data in order to draw applicable conclusions.

Results: The empirical findings suggest that there is a relationship between football coaches and their players. Furthermore, leading in the football environment is vastly shaped by this, however: industry specific stressors also play a significant role, such as management turnover. Several stress coping methods are identified in this study. The most prominent propel mentality, focus on progress and love for the sport, referred to as mental disengagement. This study is useful since it contributes with valuable insights of how leaders can efficiently cope with stress and lead in stressful environments.

Kartläggning av diagnoskategorier och huvuddiagnoser i specialiserad öppenvård: Psykiatriska kliniken Höglandet2022Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This hypothesis-based study is about mapping and comparing diagnostic categories and main diagnoses at the psychiatric clinic Höglandet. The clinic has four outpatient receptions, and we are mapping the 20 biggest diagnostic categories and the 10 most common main diagnoses in the outpatient care.

The purpose is to identify differences between the receptions, and to be able to do that we have used a secondary analysis. To get the results that we wanted, we sorted and examined data, that already had been collected by others.

The results show remarkable differences, but also equalities. Category F90 – Hyperactivity disorder and main diagnosis F90.0B – ADHD is two sorts of data that has been especially interesting to review. Some receptions show a large amount of data over specific main diagnoses that should not be used in outpatient care. This information gives us more questions; why, and how could this happen?

The data also shows that both diagnostic categories and main diagnoses as a total, has been approximately the same, when comparing each reception. Only a few exceptions were found. When we compared receptions that had similar number of patients, we found a couple of differences and that was interesting.

Due to our future profession, it should be noted that F41.1 – Generalized anxiety disorder occurs. This main diagnosis should not be used in specialist psychiatry, which is why we should pay attention to this data.

Direct and indirect effects on households’ intentions to replace the old car2004In: Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, ISSN 0969-6989, E-ISSN 1873-1384, Vol. 11, no 1, p. 1-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the purpose of testing the hypothesis that households' intentions to replace their old car have a direct negative relationship to its perceived quality ('current level') and a direct positive relationship to their aspirations for a new car ('aspiration level'), a rotating panel of car owners were interviewed every fourth month during 2 years. In this data set the hypothesis received support. In addition the results showed that the age of the car, the total number of miles driven, and the number of anticipated repairs affected the current level, whereas marital status, the number of children, consumer confidence, and environmental concern affected the aspiration level.

The effect of a progressive income tax system on entrepreneurial activity: Evidence from Ireland2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper portrays the effect of the Irish income tax system on entrepreneurial activity in the country. The purpose of the report was to determine whether tax progressivity has a negative effect on entrepreneurial activity. In addition, the paper aims to determine whether the elevated progressivity of the Irish tax system is hampering the performance of start-up companies. In order to do this, an extensive literature review led to arguing for the over-progressivity of the Irish income tax system, which allowed to develop a hypothesis. This hypothesis was then tested through a quantitative study which aimed to analyse the influence of income tax progressivity on entrepreneurial activity. The study was based on data from fifteen European countries, and the findings displayed a negative relationship between tax progressivity and entrepreneurial activity. Finally, the study addresses the common concern of excessive taxation among Irish entrepreneurs.

A quantitative research on what are the potential preferences that make Swedish furniture attract Vietnamese consumers – IKEA as a case study.2022Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

In recent years, the Swedish furniture industry has recorded many significant successes and increased its influence in the world furniture market with a high proportion of products being used for export purposes and the intensifying popularity of Sweden-originated furniture brands. Among these, IKEA is the most renowned company. Currently, the company plans to grow further in South-East Asia (IKEA, n.d) and Vietnam is a potential market for this expansion due to the shortage of furniture supply in the domestic market. However, nothing can assure that IKEA’s overall success in the oversea market would simplify their way of penetrating the Asia market. Learning from the past, the company has faced many failures in different markets such as China, Japan, and India. Considering this, the authors of this paper believe that it is important to understand how Swedish furniture companies’ product values, IKEA in particular, could affect customer consumption values, which significantly shape their perception. Based on this, the company can better in making predictions on their market penetration, thereby minimizing risks or unprofitable investments.

    Purpose:

The purpose of this paper is to understand whether IKEA’s product values have a significant effect on Vietnamese furniture consumption values and shape their perception or not. Therefore, the thesis will be drawn on the question of “What are the potential preferences that make Swedish furniture attract Vietnamese consumers? – IKEA as a case study”.

    Method:

This paper is based on the quantitative research method with a positivistic paradigm. A survey was conducted for collecting primary data with a sample size of 200 Vietnamese furniture consumers. The collected data were analysed using the SPSS Statistics 28 software.

    Conclusion:

The results showed that Swedish furniture firms like IKEA obviously could receive potential growth in Vietnam since all of IKEA’s product values are tested to have positive effects on Vietnamese consumption value, which have a strong correlation with their buying perception. This paper can be used as a premise for further research on customer perceived values when IKEA’s products are officially experienced by Vietnamese consumers.
