“Jag var hungrig och ni gav mig att äta…”: Kyrkan som arena för socialt arbete2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines churches as welfare actors and demonstrates how protestant churches in Sweden accomplish social work.  The empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 professional diaconal workers from all over Sweden and analysed through a thematic analysis. Through thematisation and coding three main themes were identified: The role of churches in society, Independence and dependence and Inclusion and exclusion. The findings show that churches are seeing a need to offer welfare services as a complement to services offered by the public sector. The churches are often capable to offer support and help in a way that authorities are not able to offer and therefore they act as a compliment to public actors. For example, the churches can not only satisfy physical needs, but also the social needs and a support to deal with existential issues of people. The extensive crisis preparedness and voluntary resources of the churches are presented as a strength. In Sweden the diaconal work differs from social work, offered by the public sector, by building on Christian faith that is also an important component in the churches work for social change among vulnerable people. The study also exhibits strengths and weaknesses in civil society actors and problematises power structures in the help alliance. Finally, this study illustrates the importance of having professional competence and a critical approach in an organisation that is operated with kindness and voluntary engagement. The study shows that churches, through their voluntary resources and while maintaining a critical reflection, have the potential to be important collaboration partners for public actors, and are therefore welfare actors to be taken seriously.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to analyze how film can work as a didactic tool in religious education at the upper secondary school level. The film analysis was conducted by analyzing Bahrani's (2021) film adaptation, The White Tiger, using Andersson and Hedling’s (1999) method for film analysis and Sanders Pierce’s description of semiotics as the theoretical framework. The film revolves around a boy named Balram and his life and aspirations for a better life, where he is not defined by the caste he was born into. The analysis showed that the film, The White Tiger, consisted of several instances where religious themes and expressions were visualized. Four prominent themes in the film were (1) spirituality and faith, (2) religious hierarchy and the caste system, (3) moral dilemmas, and (4) freedom and liberation. Since religious aspects were detected throughout the film, it indicates that the film can be used as a didactic tool in religious education at the upper secondary school level. However, it should be noted that films with entertainment purposes, such as The White Tiger, require carefully planned preparations and post-production if the inclusion of film is to function as a method to teach through film and not be reduced to simply showing a film.

Hur undervisas nyreligiositet?: En intervjustudie med gymnasielärare om nyreligiositet2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study examines two Muslim feminist theologians and their approach to the Islamic tradition and the religious sources. The purpose of the study is to examine their presentation and interpretation of the sources from a feminist perspective and to compare their arguments. Former studies have shown that the authors aim to convince the reader that their message are the right one by using a reinterpretation of the sources and that feminist authors argue that the ideal message of the Quran is equality between the sexes. The interpretations through history are considered to be misogynic because the male religious elite have controlled the progress of the discursive tradition. A theoretical approach involving The basket metaphor by Jan Hjärpe, the theory about symbolic universes by Berger & Luckmann and the discussion about the anthropology of islam by Talal Asad are used to explain how the Muslim feminists relate to the Islamic tradition.

The result show that both authors defend Islam as a religion but have different approaches regarding their interpretation. They are both using the Islamic sources to argue why the ideal in Islamic tradition are equality between the sexes. Mernissi mainly focusses on the actors in history to explain why woman should have equal rights and Wadud mainly focuses on the linguistics of the sources. The result also shows that there has been a shift in attitude. Mernissi had in her earlier texts a negative attitude towards the early years of Islam and meant that Muhammed and his companions restricted the agency of women. Later in her texts it is clear that she has a more positive approach. Wadud on the other hand stated in her earlier text that all verses in the Quran has a desire for equality. In her later text she declares that there are problematic verses in the Quran and that they could be disregarded.

A pedagogic perspective on attitudes towards religious diversity

A comparative study between two schools

    Number of pages: 31

The purpose of our study is, from a definition of the term multi religious teaching perspective, to examine the conditions for an education in the school subject religion, which promotes both the learning as well as the development of a tolerant attitude among the students.

We have chosen to start from problems like for example: Which problems do the schools apprehend in integration issues and how do they handle them? To narrow down these problems we have chosen to work from following questions. What control documents, national or local, underlies the teaching in the subject religion? How does the education in religion promote tolerance and understanding over the ethnical and religious groups? Then we reformulated these question fields into questions that we later on used for the interviews.

The method we used was open directed interview. After we had analysed the answers from the interviews we reached the results. In our study we searched for problems connected with religious education in schools, to our surprise none of the respondents had apprehended any of those connected to their teaching in religious education. Therefore, we have enthroned the problems that we observed, but the teachers did not, in our discussion part. Just because a school is known as a multi religious school does that not necessary mean that the multicultural perspective is to be seen as a resource in the teaching.

Den icke-konfessionella religionsundervisningen: En intervjustudie om gymnasielärares upplevelser2023Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines non-confessional religious education and upper secondary school teachers' experiences in this context. The purpose of the study is to explore how five teachers in five different upper secondary schools in Sweden interpret and implement non-confessional principles in teaching religious studies in today's society. The research addresses the following questions: How do secondary school teachers interpret the policy document's speech on non-confessional teaching? How is teaching practice in the subject of religion affected based on a non-confessional approach? What challenges emerge in the assignment of being non-confessional in religious education? The study gathers data trough five interviews with upper secondary school teachers from various regions in Sweden and is based on qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. The result of the thesis has been analyzed using thematic analysis. A theory used in this thesis is intercultural religious didactics. This theory emphasizes the importance of cultural diversity and interactions between different religious traditions. The result, which is based on the study's research questions, shows that the informants largely share a common understanding of a non-confessional education that emphasizes neutrality and objectivity without promoting specific religious or secular positions. The impact on teaching practices is reflected in a more tolerant classroom environment that promotes understanding of different cultures and perspectives. Challenges identified show that different religions are understood in different depths and that it is sometimes difficult to balance students' different opinions which can lead to discussions and conflict if the teacher is not providing new perspectives on the students' opinions. In conclusion, a non-confessional approach in school's religious education allows all religions and worldviews to be treated equally. Despite challenges arising from diverse student backgrounds, success lies in reflecting on teaching impact and fostering an open and tolerant classroom environment.

For a Future to Come: Derrida’s Democracy and the Right to Literature2013In: Journal of East-West Thought (JET), ISSN 2161-7236 (Print), 2168-2259 (Online), Vol. 3, no 1, p. 13-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Reflecting on the political nature of literature and its relation to modern democracy, the essay begins by problematizing any notion of commitment in literature. However, irresponsibility found in literature, far from undermining the political process, is what animates the political field seen as an endless contestability of our social practice. The way our notion of modern democracy informs our understanding of literary practice is explored through a selection of Derrida’s writings where democracy emerges as the possibility of imagining alternatives to the world and “of thinking life otherwise,” as Derrida (2004) says, which is to say that democracy cannot be thought without the possibility of literature. Democracy implies not political stability but a continuous call for unrest that prevents its atrophy, and literature, in its unconditional right to call everything to account, is its rearguard work as it were, keeping democracy forever open, for better or for worse.

A Methodological Interpretation of Feminist Pragmatism2012In: Contemporary Feminist Pragmatism / [ed] Maurice Hamington & Cecilia Bardwell Jones, London: Routledge, 2012, p. 217-237Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to render a methodological interpretation of feminist pragmatism, to offer some points for reflection on the concepts of community, reciprocity, and the need for social study/reform. Empirically inspired explications on non-participation are offered. The democratic meaning of participation in collaborative knowledge building is reflected upon. Feminist pragmatism and its methodological interpretation in terms of action research are presented as an important contribution to thinking about organisational and professional development, the gendered nature of knowledge and the way we organise work and society. Examples of transformative actions on the basis of collaborative knowledge building processes are presented and, finally, knowledge simplification and the bureaucratisation of knowledge are highlighted as undemocratic.

    Abstract [en]

The broad aim of this thesis is to explain the fundamental themes and function of Swedish field sermons and field prayers, and so to re-examine the view in earlier research that field sermons were primarily ‘Old Testamentary’ in nature. Inspired by more recent international research, I hold that the sermons’ basic functions were twofold: discipline and comfort. What matters, is to understand the disciplinary aspects in terms of the fundamental Lutheran view of the social order, which was expressed in the doctrines of the three estates and of vocation. The army needed disciplined soldiers, and this the sermons answered for, but not primarily in response to the needs of the army, but as a reflection of Lutheranism’s worldview and self-understanding. The main expression of the sermons’ comforting function was the Gospel of Christ. This meant that the soldiers should not fear death, because if they were to die, it would be the will of God, and after death awaited eternal life. The basic themes seen in the sermons cannot be described as being ‘Old Testamentary’. The sermons were not primarily based on passages from the Old Testament, nor did martial themes and the Decalogue dominate at the expense of the Gospel.

The more specific aim of the thesis is to understand the ways in which preaching might have helped shape the self-image and worldview of both officers and men in the Swedish Army. A key analytical perspective is provided by Thomas Kaufmann’s thesis on ‘Lutheran confessional culture’. Kaufmann emphasizes Lutheranism’s outward boundaries–towards other confessions–but also its internal pluralisation. I have coined the methodological term ‘offered identification’ in order to study the self-image presented to Swedish soldiery. The premise here is that a person’s self-image consists of multiple identifications, while the word ‘offered’ signals the fact that I examine ideals, but not their eventual appropriation by the soldiers. In my analysis I examine three offered identifications. A confessional Lutheran identification as the correct sort of Christian was set against those I term ‘the confessional others’, most important being the Roman Catholic Church or ‘the papists’. An important part of a national identification as a Swedish subject was the belief that they were the chosen people–that Swedes were the new Israel. A professional identification as a Christian soldier was based on the Lutheran doctrines of vocation and of the three estates, which meant it was legitimate for a Christian to be a soldier. The soldierly ideal was fundamentally a Christian ideal.

    Abstract [en]

Sermons delivered and prayer books read in the Swedish Army during the ‘Age of Greatness’ reflect the Swedish expansion in the Baltic area during the 17th century, and the subsequent retreat in the early 18th century. These genres had a transnational character. The mobility and the international composition of the army strengthened the Reformatory heritage and put the army in contact with contemporary developments in continental Europe. The prayer books and the military sermons expressed a Lutheran world-view and self-understanding. This Lutheran identification was connected to the idea that the Swedes were God’s chosen people. Thus, preaching and prayer in the Swedish army was an expression of a particular Swedish confessional culture, existing within a greater early modern Lutheran confessional culture.

Vårt ansvar?: En intervjustudie av religionslärares förhållningssätt till religionsämnet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This special section of Genes and Nutrition presents a baseline analysis of ethical and legal issues undertaken within the EU FP7 research project Food4Me, which investigates the feasibility today of the vision for delivering personalized nutrition. Four major topics are addressed: Do we know enough for offering personalized nutritional advice? How can personal, cultural, and scientific perspectives on food and health be integrated? How does personalized nutrition affect individual autonomy? Which urgent ethical and legal matters stand out when personalized nutrition is commercialized?

Ethical considerations in nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics2020In: Principles of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics: Fundamentals of individualized nutrition / [ed] R. De Caterina, J. A. Martinez, & M. Kohlmeier, London: Elsevier, 2020, p. 543-548Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Ethics is the study of the normative dimensions of human relations and experiences. This chapter discusses such questions in relation to basic values in modern society. The normative foundations for the analysis are the values of human dignity, autonomy, freedom, equality, and solidarity, as well as the responsibilities of society toward its citizens, including freedom, security, and justice. The questions that are brought up touch on how implementing nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics in personalized nutrition services relates to these values.

Health and food are primary human needs. The choice of food can contribute to the support of health, but it can also come into conflict with health. Personalized nutrition may be seen as part of a wider trend toward early preventive actions to treat susceptibility to disease. If personalization of nutrition can contribute to eating habits that support health instead of threatening it, this will be beneficial for the individual, but it may also be good for society as a whole. As a consequence, pressure on societal expenses for health care may be reduced.

Personalized nutrition, as well as the wider concept of precision nutrition, have stimulated expectations and are often described as having great potential, but it has also been difficult to realize them. Studies indicate that there is widespread optimism among researchers engaged in nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics regarding at least its long-term benefits, whereas there are divergent viewpoints within the wider research community. In this situation, ethical concerns need to receive attention.

"Låt läkningen börja": En kvalitativ filmanalys av förlåtelse som fenomen I Tv-Serien Mare Of Easttown2023Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today's film and TV selection, religious and existential issues are often depicted. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze forgiveness based on thelogical and philosophical concepts in Mare of Easttown (Ingelsby, 2021). Mare of Easttown is a crime drama and at the center of the story is the accident-stricken Mare, played by Kate Winslet. The collection of data has been made via film analysis as the primary method. Focus has been on mapping the interpersonal relationships of the Tv-show. Subsequently, a thematic analysis have been made which gave rise to the cathegories forgiveness in relation to oneself and forgiveness in interpersonal relationships. Certain themes emerges that proved essential for the final analysis. These themes have been defined as the visible religion, Lori and Mare - forgiveness or reconciliation? Mare´s healing process, reconciliation and Mare´s forgiveness of self. The theroretical framework has been applied to the processed material based of concepts from Brümmers (1993) and McCord Adams (1991) models. The result showed forgiveness to be complex with many nuances and possible approaches. In some cases, forgiveness has been possible. In other cases forgiveness has been impossible, and in some cases forgiveness is not portrayed at all. The relationships based of friendship managed to found a mutual forgiveness. The main character Mare finally manages to forgive herself, due to hard moral work. The Christian idea of forgiveness and grace is constantly visible throughout the series and contributes to a deeper discussion as the idea of handing over our trouble to God, especially in cases where the characters themselves fail to forgive.

Böneutrop i den sekulära staten: En kvalitativ studie av svenska tidskrifters bevakning av debatten kring godkännandet av muslimers böneutrop vid moskén i Växjö 20182020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Over the last few years, the debate on what a secularized state is, and should be have been increasing in both spread and aggression. One of the many topics triggering this debate is the question if call to prayer should be allowed or not. The Islamic call to prayer is a phenomenon that awakes strong emotions and reactions in western society, and it has been well debated in media. The aim of this thesis is thus to investigate this debate and what ideological standpoints the arguments are based upon.

sing the theories of Jürgen Habermas and José Casanova, on the theories of secularization, the debate on the permission of call to prayer in Växjö have been analysed. To give a fair representation of the debate, articles from four different, well established Swedish newspapers have been used.

It has been found that one of the most frequently used arguments against a permission is the fear that the allowance of one call to prayer a day will lead to more extreme, and eventually radical, Islamic elements in the Swedish society.  The study shows that the view of what a secularized state is, is diverse but can generally be divided into two categories, the view that proclaims positive or negative freedom of religion.  Among the arguments against the permission, most part are solely emotional, whereas the arguments supporting the permission often are more rational.

The conclusion is that main part of the arguments is based on liberal and democratic values but how they are interpreted varies. On the side supporting the permission, the arguments are based on equality, the importance of the freedom of speech and the belief that multicultural is enriching. On the opposite side, the arguments are based on the conservation of the Swedish heritage, the Christian faith and effective integration. Many arguments against a permission are problematic since they are constructed on an emotional basis. In a secular state, this type of questions should be handled rational, based on the law of freedom of religion.

    Abstract [en]

The debate on acts of terror is based on the relation between religion and violence. According to the modern interpretation of secularization, in a secular country, the government is supposed to make decisions and to act without the influence from religious beliefs. Acts of terror, extremism and radicalization has, therefore, been regarded as symbols of extreme interpretations of religion rather than ideology. This has led to consequences in how and about whom suspicions arise. The objective of this study is therefore to investigate how the debate on acts of terror and terrorism has been depicted in three different newspapers, with different political views.

The material is analyzed through the theories of secularization, phrased by Jürgen Habermas, Jose Casanova and Talal Asad. To give a nuanced view of the debate, the leader-, culture- and debate pages of three well-established newspapers are reviewed with regards to terrorism, extremism and radicalization. The material is thereafter categorized into four different discourses where the strongest arguments are discussed.

The conclusion is that the three newspapers and most of all, the writers, have different opinions regarding both the root of the problem on terrorism and the solution to the same. The writers that mainly consider the problem to be ideological generally promote a softer path, where actions that risk inflicting on privacy and democratic rights should be avoided in favor of actions strengthening the well-fare system. Writers considering the problem to be religious are in contrary also more prone to argument for a harder path. They promote increased funds to police and security although it could imply actions that risk to inflict on privacy and democratic rights, for example through increased supervision. It can also be concluded that the opinions of the writers are tied to the political alignment of the newspaper they are representing. Finally, although the argumentation in the different newspapers differs in some ways, they all agree on the importance of keeping calm and preserving the political integrity, both as a community and as individuals.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate which possibilities teaching materials in religious education give teachers to teach about life issues in accordance to the curriculum, Lgr 11. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent life issues are addressed in the selected teaching materials and what types of life issues that are addressed in these. By conducting an analysis of teaching material based on a qualitative content analysis, three different teaching material in the field of religious education were examined. The study's results show that the teaching materials that currently are available in religious education for grades 4–6 largely have the central content written in the subject's syllabus, but that they place high demands on the teachers' religious didactic competences when it comes to finding and choosing material as a complement while working with life issues. Furthermore, the study's results also show that the choice of teaching material gives students and teachers different conditions for working with life issues and that these teaching materials also address different types of life issues from very different perspectives.

    Abstract [sv]

Kontroversiella frågor i religionsundervisningen: Sex högstadie- och gymnasielärares syn på kontroversiella ämnen i religionsundervisning2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the methods that teachers in religious education at upper elementary and high school level can use to deal with students' feelings when teaching in controversial issues. How much space they give their students to express themselves and how they reason about the importance of freedom of expression contra the importance of not discriminate anyone in the classroom. To fulfill the purpose, six religion teachers have been chosen and using a semi-structured interview the purpose fulfilled trough a conversation with the teachers. There were three main questions I wanted answered for this thesis:

    · How would upper secondary and high school teachers want to work with controversial issues in an ideal situation?

    · How does teacher’s reason about freedom of expression versus racism against ethnic groups and how do they set these boundaries in the classroom?

    · How do high school and upper elementary school teachers view controversial topics in teaching?

The answer to the question of how they would like to work with controversial issues is therefore it was quite fragmented, and no general conclusion could be drawn from one qualitive thesis. Possibly that the women in the thesis did not change their teaching methods while the men had more concrete teaching methods that they preferred. For example, one teacher said that before a lesson that he knows can be controversial for a student, he usually warns student before the class if he thinks he or she could be sensitive about the subject, as a preventive measure.

There was more consensus among the teachers about the second question whether students should be allowed to say what they want if it fits within the law. For some it was important not to limit the students while others focused on not taking too much of the lesson time. To show what the limits are, the teachers agreed that it is possible to handle after someone crosses the line for what is allowed to be said in a classroom. One of the teachers that participated in this thesis mentions that students often have a good idea of when they are crossing the line, but they do want to test it sometimes a teacher mentioned.

The third question was what could be controversial. Most of the teachers mention that it depends whether the students were religious believers or not. Some students considered it sensitive when the teacher talked about their religion, it is a risk that they would not recognize themselves in what the teachers taught about their religion. When asked what the teachers thought where controversial, half of the teachers answered that they did not think there was anything controversial to talk about. The remaining half mentioned the burning of the Koran, same-sex marriage, and the Israel- Palestine conflict as controversial topics. The question of whether it gives better involvement in teaching controversial subjects, the male teachers mostly agreed that the lesson is often better when discussing controversial subjects. The female teachers in this study were more of the view that the subjects needed to be relevant for the students and that it did not have to be controversial topics like most of the men in the study answered.
