    Demokrati och inkludering - en begreppsdiskussion2004In: Utbildning och Demokrati, ISSN 1102-6472, E-ISSN 2001-7316, Vol. 13, no 2, p. 77-95Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Notions of inclusion and democracy are distinguished, discussed and related to one another. Three notions of inclusion are discerned: weak inclusion, strong inclusion and inclusion as a dilemma. Whereas a weak notion of inclusion subscribes to a general idea of inclusion while at the same time allowing for exceptions, the strong notion supports inclusion as a firm principle. A dilemma perspective, on the other hand, to a larger extent involves the recognition of inclusion/exclusion as inherent characteristics of educational systems dealing with diversity. Four notions of democracy are discussed: rule-governed, representative, participatory and deliberative. Relations between notions of inclusion and democracy are – tentatively – discussed. It is argued that the different models of democracy have implications vis-a-vis notions of inclusion and some of these implications are discussed.

"Balkannibalism": En mikrohistorisk studie av ögonvittnesskildringar från kriget i forna Jugoslavien under 1990-talet2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The war in the Balkans is a conflict that we rarely learn about in school and that might have something to do with the fact that the conflict still can be seen as ”fresh” although it took place more than 20 years ago. During this time Sweden received about 100 000 immigrants from former Yugoslavia and there are a lot of them still living in Sweden as first och second generations of immigrants. This essay will examine four persons personal experience from the war from a micro historical perspective.

The purpose of the essay is to highlight how different individuals own stories about the war can deepen the view given by the historical research. Is it possible to find similarities and differences in an American journalist Roy Gutman, a Slovenian writer Slavenka Drakulic, a twelve-year-old Bosnian girl Zlata Filipovic and a Swedish reporter Kjell Albin Abrahamsson’s journey in the war- filled Balkans?

What emerged during the research of this study and the thematic analysis was that people from the Balkans had a more impartial view on the matter than those who came to the conflict from other countries. While Drakulic and Filipovic choose not to point out the ”bad guys” in the conflict Gutman and Abrahamsson had a more partial opinion.

The study also showed that Drakulic and Filipovic, along with Abrahamsson viewed the conflict as a political one where the conflict emerged as a nationalistic clash between the former states of Yugoslavia. Gutman on the other hand pointed the conflict out as an ethnic one where the Serbs tried to get rid of other ethnical groups from serb-dominated areas.

"Religiösa friskolors vara eller icke vara": En kvalitativ argumentationsanalytisk studie kring debatten om religiösa friskolor på ledarsidor i svenska tidningar 2016-20172017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe how playing is estimated by some pre-school teachers and primary school teachers within a pre-school class and a primary school form 1. The issues which this study is based on are as follows: What is important in playing? How can games and playing be used as a resource in situations of teaching and learning in a pre-school class and a primary school form 1? and What is the possibility of changes in playing between pre-school compared to primary school form 1?

The study has been effected with a qualitatively high effort according to a phenomenographic way of analysis. In this study six pedagogues (teachers) have been interviewed, chosen from three different schools, one pre-school teacher and one primary school teacher from each school. They were also chosen by the duration of their  professional experience which is at least 10 years. From collected facts eight categories have been worked out.

The result shows that the two activities, pre-school class and primary school form 1 estimate playing almost in the same way. The important thing in playing is above all to develop social ability. Pre-school teachers think that all learning can be contained in playing, while primary school teachers think that learning takes place only through educational games, and that free playing serves only as a break for children to relax and recover. Although both professional categories are aware of the fact that free playing is supposed to be part of the activity in primary school form 1, it won't  normally be possible for these children to practice it.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

SFI...why not EFI?: A study of the teaching practices applied when teaching English to immigrants in Sweden2010Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My aim with this study is to investigate the teaching strategies applied in teaching English to students with another mother tongue than Swedish.

According to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory, factors such as age, language competence and mother tongue influence can affect language acquisition. SLA theory also states that multilinguals tend to select one of their languages as their primary source of information and this language is the language that most resembles the target language; Swedish and English are both Germanic languages and therefore share language closeness. Results showed that regardless of age and mother tongue, equal numbers of students chose to source Swedish only or both Swedish and their mother tongue when translating texts from English; only 3 chose to source their mother tongue only. There is to date little research that directly connects teaching approaches with SLA, particularly when dealing with multilingualism. I believe a potential area for research could be to investigate the possibility of developing teaching strategies that can potentially harness prior language knowledge.

My investigation also showed that English is taught to native and non-native Swedish speakers alike through the medium of the Swedish language; that is to say the course books consist of English text with vocabulary translations and grammatical exercises from Swedish to English. A suggestion would be to reduce the use of the English to Swedish translation methods, particularly for students with a limited knowledge of Swedish, and incorporate into lessons more communicative teaching methods using authentic materials and real situations.

Islam i postsekulär belysning:: En kvalitativ analys om religion och samhälle i Johannes Anyurus roman ”De kommer att drunkna i sina mödrars tårar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The essay examines a study trip to Krakow and the mediation of the Holocaust memory to 15 students. It is partly structured after three places that the students move between, experience arenas, which are the death and concentration camps, Poland and Sweden. The students are also moving according to four different dimensions: first place, but also time, morality and existential. The survey is based on a ritual theoretic view of social memory production and the formation of new witnesses. With inspiration from the Norwegian study Pilgrim, tourist and student: Norwegian school trips to death and concentration camps by Kyrre Kverndokk, has also this study trip been studied as a ritualization process based on which students will obtain a state of catharsis. With a qualitative research method, information has been gathered through participatory observations, group interviews and a poll. The result shows that the students attributed the camps to death, destruction and evil, but that they were struggling to live in the victims’ situation because it was too far from their own lives but also difficult to understand such evil. The students did on the other hand identified the spectator role since Sweden was seen as one of the countries that looked at and let the Holocaust happen. The students positioned themselves as new witnesses and told about their experiences in their free time and on their own initiative. The study indicates, among other things, that the Norwegian approach to the Holocaust differs from Swedish, which influences the meaningful learning process.

Ett hållbart minne? Historiebruk kring Georg Carl von Döbeln 1848-20092012Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of history in relation to General Georg Carl von Döbeln (1758–1820), a prominent Swedish commander in the “Finnish War” of 1808–1809. The empirical material is extensive and includes, among others, a dissertation, biographies, movies, newspapers and weekly journals, an opera, a radio play, novels, a students’ farce, theatre plays, video recordings from various commemorative events, and annuals.

Based on these sources and a theoretical framework originating with German historical theorist Jörn Rüsen, the various ways in which Döbeln has been used between 1848 and 2009 is examined by applying a categorization of three main uses: educational, popular and commemorative.

By way of this categorization and the very long period of examination, the study reveals how stereotypical and fictional conceptions about cultural characteristics, often virtues perceived as being authentically Swedish, are created. The investigation shows that Döbeln, a real historical person, was born as a symbolic figure through a collection of poems written by Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg in 1848.

The thesis also reveals how the uses of Döbeln follow a cyclical pattern and how he, as a symbolic figure, is re-assigned to new tasks and roles as society changes on the national or international level.

One point of departure for the study is the more general question of whether nationalism has run its course or if it has only taken on new forms. In the case of Döbeln, various agents have increasingly used him for marketing purposes, often local in character, from the 1980s onward. This preservation of a relatively obscure, but still well established, symbolic figure with connections to various localities may be explained by the problem of accelerating rural deprivation. The declining prospects of depopulated regions where all kinds of services are dismantled create incentives to preserve and nurture historically unique events that have occurred in the area. These events and characters serve to bolster local identity and support the lucrative, rapidly growing sector of heritage tourism in Sweden, the Nordic countries, and the EU.

Finally, the study points to the fact that the use of a historical person for a specific purpose often comes with an expiration date. This date depends on two factors, one relating to how professional historians have treated Döbeln as a symbolic figure and the other to what needs other users have of him and the tasks that he can perform.

Digitala verktyg användes i någon mån. Observationerna bekräftade till stor del lärarnas utsagor. Under observationerna gavs exempel på hur lärarnas uppfattningar.  visades i undervisningen.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our research was to investigate if oat is capable of extracting cadmium to such extent that it is usable in decontaminating polluted soils. We grew oat in a hydroponic culture during 28 days in a controlled environment and a total of 30 plants were used. The nutrient solutions were contaminated with cadmium of ten different concentrations after seven days. After harvesting the plants, the roots were separated from the shoots, placed in separate containers and then turned to ashes. The cadmium content was measured three times per sample in an atomic absorption spectrometer.

Our results indicate that the ability of oat to extract cadmium from a solution is linearly dependent of the cadmium concentration of the solution. We also noted that the resistivity to cadmium of oat is limited. When the concentration of accessible cadmium ions exceeded 0,06mM, a significant difference of the shoot growth appeared. The results we obtained from shoots and roots show cadmium amounts much higher in the roots than the shoots. Despite this difference there were sufficient amounts of cadmium in the shoots to call oat a hyper accumulator. This means that oat fulfills one of the criteria of a phytoextractor.

    Abstract [en]

This is a study on whether you can use vampires as a source of inspiration when teaching at upper secondary school level. Two questions form the basis for the study:

How can the vampire theme be used in the classroom with horror literature as Dracula (1897) and Twilight (2005) as a foundation?

Which models for teaching literature are available for the vampire theme?

In order to answer the questions of the study close reading has been used as method. The result shows that the vampire by all means can be used as a source of inspiration for an   educational purpose. The study shows that you have to be cautious when you introduce   horror literature in class and the use of different models is important due to the fact that you want to reach all students. In the study a few selected models for teaching literature are presented that are applicable. Since the subject invites to a wide range of approaches one should be able to catch most of the student’s interest and inspire with enthusiasm.

How to Improve Students’ Writing and Speaking Skills2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

English is one of three core subjects in upper secondary school and it is essential that students

receive a good education in this subject. Since writing and speaking are such prominent parts

of the English language, the teacher is obliged to possess knowledge of how to improve

students’ proficiencies in an efficient way. The question is how to use this knowledge when

the teacher is supposed to compose different methods for lessons, evaluate the exercises and

give proper feedback to the students.

This investigation is based on various literary sources, interviews with teachers and

questionnaires with students and the background information is the basis for the interview

    questions and the questionnaire.

There are endless possibilities for appropriate exercises to improve writing and speaking and it

is impossible to investigate every single one there is in a relatively short essay. I have,

however, found a fair number of methods, which will be described in this paper. In order to

evaluate exercises, the teacher needs to be prepared and know what to focus on in the exercise

as it is in progress, but also listen to the students’ opinions since they know if they have

learned anything or not. Correction of spoken errors should be handled cautiously by the

teacher but the students should be made aware of the written mistakes they make.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about young peoples’ use of swearwords and four-letter words. Through a questionnaire we have examined in what way 102 Swedish high school students use swearwords and four-letter words. We have also examined if there are any differences between girls and boys linguistic usage and what these differences may be.

Our results show that almost all youths use swearwords and that a majority of them use four-letter words as well. The results also show that there are not any major differences between girls and boys. They use practically the same words in the same way. Our study also demonstrates that swearwords and four-letter words are most frequently used to enhance what someone is saying but that four-letter words are also used when to insult somebody. According to our re-sults the use of swearwords and four-letter words has become a part of young peoples’ daily vocabulary and these words are used no matter what they do or where they are. Of importance is who they are with. Our study point to the fact that girls and boys seem to use these words more frequently when they are together with friends and siblings than with their parents.

    Abstract [en]

Our exam paper is about young adults’ use of intensifiers in school papers. The theoretical background includes previous research about intensifiers in the Swedish language and above all young adults’ use of intensifiers. We have chosen to focus on all intensifying expressions which young adults’ use, because we did not want to limit our research material. We made a comparing study of 25 student papers from year 1999 and 25 student papers from year 2009 to find similarities and differences. Our result answers our four main questions: “How has the frequency of intensifiers changed from year 1999 to year 2009?”, “Which new intensifiers have been added?”, “In which contexts are intensifiers used?” and “Are there any differences in the use of intensifiers between boys and girls?”. The result shows that the number of intensifiers has increased during the 10 year period but that the selection of used intensifiers has decreased. Furthermore is a change in which intensifiers that are used and in which contexts they are used illustrated. The result also shows that boys in year 1999 use intensifiers more frequently than the girls, but in year 2009 the result was opposite.
