    Abstract [en]

    Case studies and modeling of logistics systems are the basis for the formulation of the content and structure of a reference model for the organization and management of Value Networks as a higher stage of integrated development of supply chains. The definition of a mathematical model for the balance of the Value Network can reveal the characteristics and principles of organization and management of Value Networks.The instrument obtained enables supply chains to assess their level of development and identify the characteristics that should be developed to reach the concept of Value Network, which is based on knowledge development and environmental integration as supports of the same and its competitive position in the global market.

    Proper integration into the model of environmental factors ensures that Value Networks are inserted into the objectives of promoting sustainable development. The current concept of logistics flow is extended to incorporate within it the exchange of energy, resources and impacts to the environment.

    The research methods used were based on a combination of study and experimentation of cases and the conceptual and mathematical modeling of systems.

    Abstract [es]

    A partir del año 2011, Cuba emprendió la actualización de su modelo económico, lo cual ha estado signado en conformar un nuevo escenario para el desempeño de las entidades económicas. La investigación que se presenta tiene el objetivo de identificar los elementos de la organización que son relevantes en la determinación del desempeño de las entidades cubanas en el escenario económico y social actual. Se han identificado 42 elementos relevantes de la organización, cuyo desarrollo es condición para que las mismas obtengan buenos desempeños en el escenario que se conforma con las transformaciones actuales y futuras del modelo económico. Se requiere que cada entidad, de acuerdo con sus características, emprenda un desarrollo al menos en los 42 elementos relevantes puestos de manifiesto en el presente estudio.

    Abstract [en]

    This work addresses the process of opening enterprises (grant of license) in a municipality. The purpose is to perform the identification, analysis and redesign of the process of granting permits to private companies, then making a proposal for improvement. The chosen method was a case study, using a qualitative approach according to the BPM methodology to respond: how to improve and accelerate the grant of a license? As a result, the proposed model used the best practices for business registration to reduce the time to 70%, and using half of the involved sectors. The conclusion is that it is possible to reduce bureaucracy and increase the efficiency of public administration with the applied methodology.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: Modern supply chains are at risk as a result of increasing disturbance. The use of Lean and Six Sigma’'s values, methods and tools can be one option to analyze, prevent and mitigate risks. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether a combined Lean Six Sigma philosophy can support the awareness and management of supply-chain risk.

    Design/methodology/approach: The methodology followed in the study is based on a literature review and multiple case study, performed by means of qualitative methods of data collection, such as observations on-site, face-to-face interviews and document analysis. Case selection includes the results of research conducted in seven large Swedish companies.

    Findings: It has been indicated that Lean and Six Sigma values, methods and tools can be very effective in companies’ efforts to control the supply-chain risks and that they improve the companies’ ability to handle variability and risk management. Lean Six Sigma supports a risk-management culture in the focal companies, but they must involve customers and companies in the supply chain if they wish to create a risk-management culture in the entire supply chain. In order to do this, they can use the Six Sigma training structure, but they need to include more risk tools and methods developed for the supply chain management. It has also been indicated in the literature that if more people involve in 6S projects, the financial results will be better, and the innovation of processes will increase.

    Research limitations/implications: These include suggestions for how the companies can use the Six sigma training structure to collaborate in the supply chain.

    Practical implications: This study gives practical suggestions for how the companies in supply chain can collaborate and use the Six Sigma training structure for creating a more holistic view of supply chain, which also decrease risks in supply chain.

    Originality/value: This study indicates that Lean Six Sigma supports risk awareness and management in the focal companies of the supply chains, which improves companies’ ability to handle variability and risk management. It has also been demonstrated that the companies should use the Six Sigma framework, especially training, as a foundation, and they should create common projects for better collaboration in the supply chain, which will decrease the risks in the entire supply chain.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate whether a combined Lean Six Sigma (L6S) philosophy can help to improve agility on supply chain and companies. Individual organizations cannot get agility, until they invest in their supply chain’s agility. Agile Supply Chain is recognized as very difficult to achieve in practice, and use of Lean Six Sigma Philosophy can be one option to get it.

    Design/methodology/approach: The research follows the cases study methodology. A theory background is used with the objective of know how the executives and academics see the concept of agility in supply chain (sc) and companies. Furthermore, multiple-case study has been performed, by means of qualitative methods of data collection, such as observations, document analysis and face-to-face interviews with different specialist. Pattern matching is used to compare the empirical result with the predictive one from literature.

    Findings: This research demonstrate positively that L6S can help to improve to agility on supply chain and companies. The seven companies included in the study have integrated some tools and methods from both philosophies and all have aligned L6S with good results in agility concept. Also, shows that using L6S philosophy production speed will increase and responsiveness and flexibility will improve combined with a more robust process. It has been indicated that agility implies increased variation, where a Six Sigma approach is useful controlling and monitoring such variations. 

    Originality/value: The research point out that a combined Lean Six Sigma philosophy develop the Agile Supply Chain and companies. Lean and Agility philosophies are closely related, and the Lean philosophy may be one stage into the development of agility. Although at the same time, they differ in many respects.

    Reshoring manufacturing is a strategic decision because of its cost, implications, and complexity. Existing models have largely focused on cost aspects in reshoring decisions and are considered limited in assisting practitioners in the reshoring decision-making process. Variables like cost and quality have been the most important, whereas environment and sustainability seem not a priority, arguing for the myopic nature of these decisions. Therefore, this study employs system dynamics (SD) to expand practitioners’ mental models for the reshoring decision-making process. To do so, first, variables and heuristics are retrieved from the literature. Next, an industry expert is interviewed to have a practitioner’s input. Finally, a descriptive SD model is built by connecting variables and heuristics. The findings indicate that the behavior of the variables in reshoring decisions is dynamic over time. Furthermore, the variables are inter-linked, resulting in non-linear, multi-caused reshoring decisions. The presented SD model allows incorporating the variables that are sometimes difficult to quantify and provides a holistic view of the variables, their relationships, complexities, and the dynamics involved in the reshoring decision-making process. This study contributes to reshoring literature by using SD perspective in the reshoring decision-making process and proposing an SD model for reshoring decision-making. This study assists practitioners in expanding their mental models regarding the reshoring decision-making process. It is further argued that the proposed SD model may work as a generic steppingstone to further develop company-specific feedback-oriented models to support in their reshoring decision-making processes and to support future research on the topic.

    Abstract [en]

    Characterizing the logistic and supply chain level is a fundamental support for strategic development, not only for enterprises but also for the professionals training in these topics. The objective of the present article is to demonstrate that the use of reference models for logistic and supply chain, developed by the authors, is useful to characterize the level of those themes in the companies. The main methods that were used are: surveys, statistics, analysis and summary of data. As a result, a complete diagnosis is obtained with the different levels of logistic and supply chain concept application in a statistically significant sample of firms. The fundamental conclusion is that these models are validated and useful to characterize the aspects of logistic and supply chain in the Cuban enterprises, and constitute a guide to draw up development strategies.

    Abstract [en]

    The development of supply chain management includes the capacities coordination among the processes that integrate it, so much in the operative plan as in the strategic one. This problem could be allocated to the classic job shop scheduling problems of the Operations Research. In such direction, a second generalization of the calculation algorithm of the production, logistics and service capacities is formulated starting from the one reached previously by the own authors. With this generalization it is facilitated to carry out the calculations of capacity at the supply chain level and of each one of the processes. The generality's application is flexible to processes of production, transport, storage, administration and for service. The capacities of each process of the supply chain are expressed in the magnitudes of the final demand of products and services in the consumer, considering the losses and returns along the supply chain. A study case is presented to demonstrate the possibility of use in one field, but it is explained the possibility to use in different fields, from the production of aluminum carpentry to services related to medical equipments.

    Numerous code systems and classification of products and services exist globally, being tendency the standardization of them in the supply chains to achieve higher integration. The correct use of these systems is considered essential in the effectiveness in the inventory management, given its direct relationship with the registration of the primary information and tracing of the products. However, the scientific literature and the academic programs concentrate mostly on the Auto-ID technologies more than in the code structure and the consequences of an incorrect use of the code. The present article reflects the main deficiencies possible to detect in the systems of code of products, using a sample of companies in Cuba. The consequences of these deficiencies are discussed and it is also included a proposal of organization of the code for the Cuban companies. © The author; licensee Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this study was to assess the current state of service sin SERVICIM at the Center of Molecular Immunology. To this were done surveys, interviews, observations, document review and performance indicator sin a period from 2003 to 2013. The main results high light that here is no culture in the provision of services by staff who offers it, even if there has been a gradual increase in the number of people satisfied with the services. Were identified as major barriers to customer satisfaction and the workers themselves SERVICIM, transportation and food; and determined that the organization should develop a model of customer satisfaction taking into account the integration of their processes.

    Abstract [en]

    There has been an increasing consumer demand for local and organic food as they are considered to be more sustainable, ecological and healthier. The ‘conventional’ long food distribution system is not able to fulfill the current needs. Consequently, short distribution systems for local and organic food have been gaining popularity that is not only sustainable but also contribute to food security and satisfies local consumer demand. Alternative food networks (AFNs) address these concerns. They have emerged as a food provisioning system linked with reciprocal ties that promote a sustainable and civil economy, environment, biodiversity and respect for farming tradition. However, the AFNs are facing a challenge to maximize the distribution of local and organic products in the long term. The purpose of the paper is to make a review of the existing short food distribution systems for local and organic food and propose a research agenda. In order to achieve this, a literature review is conducted and different food distribution channels within AFNs are studied. The challenges for each food distribution channel are identified and then compared to ‘conventional’ distribution systems. As a main finding of the study is presented a framework with the main challenges of the existing short food distribution channels within AFNs. This gives the general criteria to consider while designing a short food distribution system that closely connects consumers and farmers of local and organic food. The policy implication is to create favorable conditions to encourage short food distribution systems in the long term.

    Abstract [en]

    Due to the low presence of edible oil in hard-currency stores in 2006 and the need of knowing their actual demand in the Cuban market, it became necessary to undertake a study of the levels of availability of this product. This study was performed to measure the availability of this product in a phase of implementation of the Model. The study was divided into two stages, a first one that discusses the availability of oil in the country with all the commercial chains and a second one that focuses on Havana and Commercial Chain TRD Caribe. In the first stage the level of availability was high (90,8%), while in the second stage availability levels dropped significantly to 45,84%. The levels of availability are analyzed in various stages of the supply chain, showing that there are large differences in levels of availability in the same period of time for different actors in the supply chain, which leads to the conclusion that there are problems in the organization of the logistics of the edible oil supply chain, which generates low levels of availability meaning low levels at customers service.

    Abstract [en]

    The edible oil is considered one of the stars products in the cuban national market, as a result of its discharge it demands for the population and for the industries that use it as matter it prevails in its productive process [1]. Since the year 2005 the Supply Chain of Edible Oil has come carrying out investigations with the objective of elevating the levels of service to its final client. Following this purpose is made in this year an association between the Laboratory of Logistics and Management of the Production (LOGESPRO) and the Enterprise of the Oils ECASOL, coordinating entity of the Chain. In the beginnings of the work with ECASOL the emphasis is made in the availability studies of edible oil, and after to the application of the Value Network Model, later is making wider the field of action of the investigations to develop between LOGESPRO and ECASOL. The objective of the present case consists on analyzing the evolutionary development that has suffered the Supply Chain of Edible Oil in CUC with ECASOL like coordinating entity of the same one starting from the achieved association.

    The purpose of the case study is to investigate whether a combined Lean Six Sigma philosophy can help to improve collaboration to get more integrated supply chains. The method used was Literature review, multiple case study, face-to-face interviews and observations on-site in seven large swedish companies. It has been indicated that by implementing Lean Six Sigma Philosophy companies could improve business environment and improve collaboration to get integrated supply chains. The paper provides guidance to organizations regarding the applicability and properties of quality philosophies and concepts in logistics.

    Abstract [en]

    The weak integration between companies in the supply chains, the fact that companies do not have a procedure that enables them to identify the parameters and indicators of coordination that should be established between their operating processes, the inefficient integrated management of resources and capabilities and the inadequate use of contracts as a tool of coordination between the actors in the supply chain; are elements that characterize Cuban business practice of supply chains. This paper studies the bases of the Model for the Design of Integration Nodes in supply chains and applications thereof. The proposed model is intended as a design tool and at the same time, it supports the decision making on the processes. It is showed that with the application of the Model and its procedure, the chain performs better and increases its integration. As the fundamental conclusion it is obtained that the Model is fully applicable and it provides multiple positive results for the Cuban business practice.

    La débil integración entre empresas de las cadenas de suministro, el hecho de que las entidades no tienen un procedimiento para identificar los parámetros e indicadores de coordinación entre procesos, la ineficiente gestión integrada de recursos y capacidades y el inadecuado uso de los contratos como herramienta de coordinación entre los actores de la cadena de suministro; son elementos que caracterizan la práctica empresarial de las cadenas de suministro cubanas. El siguiente trabajo plantea las bases del Modelo de Diseño de los Nodos de Integración en las cadenas de suministro, y sus aplicaciones. El Modelo es una herramienta de diseño, a la vez que apoya la toma de decisiones en los procesos. Se demuestra que al aplicar el modelo y su procedimiento, la cadena obtiene mejores resultados e incrementa su integración. Como conclusión fundamental se obtiene que el Modelo es aplicable y brinda resultados positivos para la práctica empresarial cubana.
