    Abstract [en]

    A major concern for companies today is the necessity to manufacture a wide range of products with short lead times and at a low cost. This puts greater demands on companies to have a good product mix and volume flexibility while maintaining a high level of efficiency. In addition, companies need to be aware of the source of unknown losses in their organisation and production process in order to minimise them.  This study was conducted at Corroventa avfuktning AB in Bankeryd, Sweden, a company that specialises in products that are used to dehumidify buildings and neutralise radon radiation. Their production process mainly focuses on maintaining stock levels, but adverse weather conditions that cause flooding and water damage could push demand levels to a point where they are unable to guarantee a short enough lead time to win a customer order. This puts pressure on them to make their production process more flexible and efficient while reducing their lead time.  The case study was carried out in a pre-assembly department for the final assembly of adsorption dehumidifiers. The department had been identified as a bottleneck for the whole system during high demand, and the study was undertaken to identify the underlying problem. With a firm theoretical framework and in-depth status analysis the authors identified key areas to improve the overall performance of the pre-assembly department. The improvements included a new production layout, a more balanced assembly process and a reduction in material handling. This led to improved product mix and volume flexibility, and reduced lead times. As a final step, a discussion and conclusion has been written that discusses the validity and reliability of the study, sums up all the areas of improvement and determines further studies that need to be undertaken in order to facilitate future improvements throughout the plant.

    Abstract [en]

    Customer Demand Uncertainty is a big obstacle for companies to sustain their competitiveness in the market that responding customer requirements becomes essential. Besides companies need to consider also their cost structures which should have in high consistency to survive as well. Lean and Agile terminologies have been investigated so far in cost and responsiveness to customer manner within internal system perspective i.e. product volume and variety. This thesis aims to link lean manufacturing steps with customer demand uncertainty condition following information systems, marketing issues and human factor for management level in framework that firm’s (manufacturer) current condition can be tested according to answers from questionnaires and implementation of assessment tables since it is used as guideline and provides on which level firms are in demand uncertainty, lean and agile manufacturing. This support enables to firms to create their own flexible leagile decoupling point according to their interior characteristics and capabilities in the market.

    It seems like outsourcing often does not live up to the expected results. Furthermore, sourcing decisions are often unplanned and improvised based upon insufficient short term foundation. Poor basis for sourcing decisions can lead to that some important factors, which can result in long term consequences, could get overlooked in the decision foundation.

    The purpose of the master thesis is to create a structured decision process that could lead to a well balanced sourcing decision and apply this at Husqvarna AB.

    The method used is a case study which includes a theoretical and an empirical study.

    The decision process is based upon the theoretical framework and is structured as a number of activities. Each activity includes a number of questions that should be answered if a well balanced sourcing decision is to be made. The questions are developed so that they include all the factors that could be affected by outsourcing.

    The case at Husqvarna AB was analyzed and evaluated by using the theoretical decision process. This showed how the decision process can be used by Husqvarna AB.

    The conclusion of the thesis is that the purpose was fulfilled since a decision process was developed that could be applied at Husqvarna AB.

    Abstract [en]

    Increasing knowledge and suggesting new heat treatment parameters for improved very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) strength of austempered ductile iron (ADI) are the main purposes of this thesis. The work was performed within Epiroc a mining and infrastructure company. They have performed internal research on VHCF properties of ADI had previously for one set of heat treatment parameters. The scientific community in contrast have extensively studied fatigue properties of ADI in the low to high cycle regime (≤108 cycles) but only scarcely in the VHCF regime (>108 cycles). Therefor the thesis is built upon the hypothesis: ‘Improvements in HCF strength should also mean improvements in VHCF strength’. Enabling utilization of published research on heat treatment effects on fatigue strength in the HCF regime (≥107 cycles).

    Finding an efficient way of exploring heat treatment parameters and their effects on the given Cu-Ni-Mo ADI alloy were a main objective. Thus, finding mechanical- and material properties characteristic for high cycle fatigue strength in the HCF regime became crucial. The potential in using these properties to develop and execute an experimental plan to evaluate heat treatments, yet minimizing the amount of fatigue testing required.

    The first step was identifying the heat treatment parameters (and parameter ranges) that showed high HCF strength, which are: Austempering temperature (Taus), austempering time (taus) and austenitization temperature (Tγ). Then finding the characteristic mechanical- and material properties for said high HCF strength material, found to be: high- ductility, unnotched impact energy and volume fraction of carbon stabilized austenite (VRA). With both heat treatment parameters, mechanical- and material properties distinctive of high HCF strength material an experimental plan was developed based on a full factorial design (23). The factorial design was chosen for its simplicity and inherent strengths, especially as both individual and interaction effects can be estimated for all factors (heat treatment parameters). Two levels (23), one high and one low, for each of the three factors (23) were determined necessary, giving a total of 8 heat treatment trials. The primary response variables of interest (evaluated properties) for each heat treatment trial were: ductility, unnotched impact energy and volume fraction of carbon stabilized austenite. Meaning usage of the following tests: Tensile testing, impact energy testing, and X-ray diffraction. Specimens for testing were extracted from austempered Y-block type III, initially cast by a commercial foundry with an Epiroc specified chemical composition. The main and interaction effects from the heat treatment parameters on the response variables were both calculated and visually determined. The experimental data was validated against literature found data for similar heat treatments. The evaluated experimental results showed good correlation with literature for the given chemical composition. Ultimately resulting in recommendations for a new heat treatment parameters for improved high cycle fatigue strength.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to identify critical factors forcing manufacturing companies to improve the development of production technology in a machining environment. The focus in the paper is on industrial challenges within product design and production system development when introducing new products in a machining environment. Particular attention is given to the product development process and the production equipment acquisition process. A single case study is presented, consisting of interviews, observations, document studies and an analysis of a large Swedish manufacturing company. The case study company is characterized by advanced production technology, high mechanization and high automation level. In parallel with the case study a literature review was conducted in order to identify state-of-the-art methods/models for efficient design and product introduction within a production system. The paper identifies a gap in the current way of working within the case company as well as challenges regarding the development of production technology. Based on the study, the need for future research has been identified including the need of developing an improved working support for efficient production technology development when industrializing new products.

    Abstract [en]

    In order to compete within the manufacturing industry, there is a need to acquire and develop new manufacturing technologies to differentiate the company from others. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyse factors affecting development of a manufacturing technology in a joint development project with an equipment supplier. A longitudinal case study has been conducted at a Swedish manufacturing company and the collaboration between a manufacturing company and an equipment supplier has been studied. The findings reveal that tacit knowledge and good equipment supplier relationship are highly important factors that facilitate development of a manufacturing technology.

    Abstract [en]

    In order to compete within the manufacturing industry, there is a need to acquire and develop new manufacturing technologies to differentiate the company from others. This paper builds on extant operations management and innovation management literature with the focus on how to managing early manufacturing technology development. A multiple case study has been conducted at a Swedish manufacturing company in the automotive industry and our paper proposes a conceptual process for early manufacturing technology development and the key activities therein. The findings are relevant for managers working with long-term development and the paper concludes by discussing implications and research limitations.

    The fuzzy front end of product development has been studied extensively in previous research, while the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development has been largely neglected despite its importance. Only a few empirical studies that examine the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development can be found, which have been primarily carried out in the process industry. Therefore, the overall purpose of this paper is to explore the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development. Based on three case studies carried out in the manufacturing industry, the findings of the current research highlight key activities in the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development and suggest that the fuzzy front end has four sub-phases with overlapping development activities.

    Abstract [en]

    Lamellar cast iron is a very important technical alloy and the most used material in the casting production especially in the automotive industry which is the major customer. There are many factors such as chemical composition, metallurgical condition and melt treatment that are effecting on the size, morphology and distribution of microstructure features of the lamella graphite iron which in turn this features effecting the material’s mechanical properties and tensile behaviour under static load.

    In the past few years many researchers have been done different investigation within improvement of mechanical behaviour in the lamellar graphite iron. Controlling the solidification rate, changing the chemical composition and using different carbon content in the melt are some of the research that have been carried out in last years. Swerea/ Swecast in Jönköping has been involved in many of previous researches. The present work is part of the previous investigation that have been carried out in the Swecast/Swerea.

    The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of different cooling rate on the microstructure parameters and furthermore how this parameters influence the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) in the lamellar graphite iron. To increase the understanding of cooling rates effect on the material properties, in this work the chemical composition and carbon content was equal in the all of the samples.

    The collected data that are based on the morphological data of the solidification structure (dendritic network, eutectic cells) and the eutectoid transformation structure (pearlite) have been correlated to the measured tensile strength. The final purpose of this work was to develop a generic model for the prediction of the tensile strength in lamellar graphite iron which has been presented in the result chapters.

    The question that have been answered in this work based on the following points.

     How the cooling rate influences the development of primary austenite phase and those effect on the UTS?

     How the pearlite interlamellar spacing develops during the different cooling rate and influencing the UTS?

     How the different cooling rates influence the size and amount of the eutectic cell and according to this how the UTS varies?

    The work has been carried out according to the time plane (see appendix 6) and the result of this work showed that cooling rate has an essential effect on the microstructure features. By controlling the cooling rate, the material strength improves significantly.

    Detta examensarbete handlar om införande av Lean Administration i administrativa stödprocesser. Examensarbetet undersöker hur Leanverktyg kan bidra till att standardisera dokument och dokumenthanteringen och därigenom eliminera slöserier. Parallellt erhålls kvalitetssäkring och effektivisering, samt att kapacitet frigörs till värdehöjande aktiviteter. Studiens fokus och tyngdpunkt beträffande empirin bygger på aktionsforskning bedriven hos ett tradingföretag där den stödjande dokumenthanteringen till arbetet med utfallsprover studerats närmare.

    Bakgrunden till studien kan härledas till den globala konkurrensen som medfört att fler företag i större omfattning arbetat med att förbättra och effektivisera sin verksamhet. Fler företag har även valt att fokusera på sin kärnkompetens och har därför outsourcat delar av sin verksamhet. I linje med denna utveckling har nya aktörer uppkommit som specialiserat sig på andra områden än produktion. För dessa företag som inte har någon produktion att effektivisera blir fokus istället riktat mot att förbättra andra områden, så som administrationen.

    Syftet med examensarbetet är att, baserat på Lean Administration, ge förslag på ny dokumenthantering för de administrativa stödprocesserna tillhörande utfallsprover. Resultatet av arbetet mynnar ut i ett förslag som presenteras i form av en mall skapad i Excel. Excelmallen har upprättats under examensarbetes gång och är byggd med stöd av principer och verktyg från Lean Administration. Mallen är tänkt att ersätta befintliga dokument i den administrativa stödprocessen och bidrar därmed till att standardisera och effektivisera arbetet med utfallsprover. Mallen bidrar även till valmöjligheter att bemöta kundernas olika krav samt höjer kvalitén genom inbyggd felsäkring.

    Mallen kan anses generell och möjlig att implementera på olika företag som arbetar med utfallsprover. Den grafiska layouten kan dock behöva förändras för att anpassa dokumenten till företagsspecifika behov.

    Under arbetets senare fas uppkom tankar om att vidareutveckla Excelmallen till ett totalkvalitetsdokument, vilket då skulle innehålla all information om en specifik artikel som härrör kvalité. Denna tankegång ger uppslag till vidare utvecklings och förbättringsarbete.

    Förslag ges till vidare forskning inom området Lean Administration då ämnet har mycket kvar att utforska. Arbetssättet som använts i detta examensarbete, att granska arbetsmomenten med Leanglasögon, kan generaliseras och tillämpas även inom andra områden än processen med utfallsprover.

    Abstract [en]

    Manual assembly systems are widely used for producing customized products in make to order production. Despite their competitive advantages, manual assembly systems bring several problems to the production organizations. Early identification of problems on the production floor is very important in order to keep production processes running smoothly and efficient. Hence, this research aims to increase the knowledge of understanding problems related to manual assembly systems in make to order production and develop solutions for the problems. To be able to reach the research aim, two research questions were formulated. While, the first question investigates the problems related to manual assembly systems in make to order production, the second question aims to develop possible solutions for the problems.

    To be able to investigate the research problem in a real-life context, a single case study was performed at Volvo Powertrain F-Plant in Skövde, Sweden where there is a manual assembly of heavy duty diesel engine variants. In addition, existing literature was also investigated to make connections between the theory and the practice. As a result, the problems were revealed under six main categories as assembly processes, assembly operator learning, material handling, layout, ergonomics and information system. After revealing the problems, solutions were developed for each problem by using lean production principles and lean tools such as value stream mapping, standardized work. Moreover, other methods such as implementing kitting system, eliminating 7 waste in the production and implementing Takt time were also used to develop solutions. Based on the value stream mapping at the case company, improvements were developed and future state map was created for the case company. Evidently, the theoretical framework and the results from the empirical work were supported each other. At the end of the research, both research questions were answered and the aim of the research has been reached successfully.

    The results of the research could be used as a guide for production organizations with similar production systems in order to identify and eliminate problems in manual assembly systems in make to order production. In addition, this study could be a basis to investigate the problems and their solutions in manual assembly systems in make to order production. The problems and solutions in manual assembly systems in make to order production could be extended by applying new theories and methods in the research area as a further research.

In order to stay competitive in the market, companies need to attain both customer satisfaction and cost reduction in production operations. Material Handling Systems (MHS) is the place to accomplish this goal, since they have a direct impact on production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to design an in-house MHS that could be efficient for the production it serves.

    With this intention, a case-study has been conducted in Bosch Rexroth Japan. During the study, the information gathered through various sources; interviews, observations and measurements. Further, the gathered data is evaluated according to main pillars of the theoretical framework, which includes design principles and physical elements, information and software, human and management.

    By analyzing the findings from literature review and empirical study, first problems and challenges related to MHSs are identified. Thereafter, possible features that the system should posses are elicited and a design is built out of the selected features.

    To conclude, the results show that the success is not solely depending on system’s physical attributes; on the contrary, it is more related to rapid and accurate information sharing within the system. Another vital element is the interaction between system and the people, who are utilizing and operating the system. In general terms, the research took MHS design problems from one-dimensional equipment selection processes and enriches them by adding information sharing, human and management angles to design steps.

    Abstract [en]

    Increased sustainability awareness among consumers and other stakeholders has created a challenging environment for manufacturers. In order to remain in current markets it is expected from manufacturer's operations to be conscious about their impact on sustainability issues. The paper reports on a systematic review which examines sustainability practices in manufacturing companies. The systematic review aims to identify empirical-based papers to pinpoint sustainability issues addressed within manufacturing industry. To do so, trending topic categories were identified for each sustainability dimension (environment, people and profit). This paper provides further direction for future research.

    Abstract [en]

    In recent years, increasing emphasis has been placed on streamlining the supply chain. Keeping inventory and warehouses is considered to be a waste of resources. It is however difficult to completely eliminate the need for inventory and warehouses in a supply chain. The purpose of warehousing is to provide a service for the customer. By keeping what the customer demands in inventory it is possible to make a quick delivery when a need arises. Warehousing can thus be an important competitive tool.

    The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to analyse possible changes of the warehousing at Aero Materiel in order to increase the capacity of Aero Materiel’s warehousing. Aero Materiel is a wholesale company with an annual turnover that exceeds fifty million SEK. The company sells accessories for hatches and panels, such as hinges, quick access fasteners, bars and cage nuts. Aero Materiel aims to double their turnover and therefore look at ways to increase the capacity of the warehousing in order to meet future needs.

    To achieve the purpose of this thesis, the following questions have been answered.

    • How is warehousing executed today at Aero Materiel and which methods are used at Aero Materiel?
    • Which other methods for warehousing exist that could be suitable for Aero Materiel?
    • In which way could these other methods improve the warehousing at Aero Materiel?

    Interviews and observations have been carried out at Aero Materiel in order to describe the company and its operations, and in order to describe how the warehousing is conducted. Literature on the subject of warehousing has been studied in order to help answer the thesis questions. A time study has been conducted. Two similar companies have been visited with the purpose of identifying other methods for warehousing.

    Aero Materiel handles between 10 and 70 order lines per day. The warehousing personnel perform the following warehousing activities: Receiving, putaway, order picking, packaging and shipping. The warehousing personnel spend more than 50% of their time on order picking and packaging.

    Several areas with potential for improvement at Aero Materiel were identified during the mapping of the warehousing at Aero Materiel and the visits at the two other companies: the variation of order lines from day to day, the time required for packaging, counting of items, transportation during order picking and the weighing of items.

    The variation of order lines from day to day can be reduced by applying different principles of levelling. By lowering the demands for quality it is possible to reduce the time needed for packaging. Order picking can be made easier by investing in some form of automated storage system. The need for weighing articles can be reduced by keeping information of the item’s weight in the ERP-system.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The aim of this paper is to evaluate job profiles in humanitarian logistics, and assess current task priorities in light of further training and educational needs.

    Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents findings from a survey among humanitarian logistics practitioners and compares these to other studies in this area. It uses econometric models to evaluate the impact of managerial responsibilities in training needs, usage of time and previous training.

    Findings – The results show that the skills required in humanitarian logistics seem to follow the T-shaped skills model from Mangan and Christopher when looking at training wanted and time usage.

    Research limitations/implications – Survey respondents being members of the Humanitarian Logistics Association (HLA) may be more interested in developing the humanitarian logistics profession than other populations.

    Originality/value – This paper offers an insight in the specific skill requirements of humanitarian logisticians from members of the HLA and allows to understand which type of skills are linked to managerial responsibilities. The paper also establishes a link between logistics skill models and career progressions overall.

    The purpose of this report is to document the experiments carried out, methods used and results gained during research into how the silicon content of an aluminium alloy affects the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE).

    The goal of this paper is to better understand and to find a relation between silicon content and the coefficient of thermal expansion.

    Experiments were carried out using carefully prepared samples of Al Si alloys (0, 7, 10 and 20% Si content). Using these alloys, the CTE could be measured using a dilatometer.Comparative analysis carried out could map the effects of silicon content on the coefficient of thermal expansion and an equation was created. Using simple graphs and the rule of mixture method, the authors were able to build a simple tool for calculating the CTE of specific aluminum silicon alloys.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the work is to analyze and balance an assembly line at Fläkt Woods in Jönköping. The work is going to answer the questions about today’s throughput time, how much waste that occurs, number of staff at the assembly line, how the supply of material works and possible improvements that can be made at the work stations. The work is also going to give a proposal of improve-ments that can be made.

    The methods used to get the result include observations and measurements, con-versations with technicians and operators and also data from Fläkt Woods’ data-base.

    Large variations in throughput time are measured during the measure period, from 3 hours up to 5 hours and 35 minutes. These variations depend mainly on the time the air handling unit spends between the stations. The identification of the bottleneck was shown that it occurred in the last station in the assembly line. This results in a pressure from the stations behind with a long throughput time as a con-sequence. The largest source of waste is the operators’ waiting time. The measures that have been made show that the operators wait 33.4 % on average of the time available. The number of operators varies from ten to twelve during the measure period. This number of operators is too high in consideration of the high waiting times. It results in difficulties for the operators to move between the stations be-cause every station is fully manned. The supply of larger components for example fans, batteries, rotary heat exchangers and dampers for the air handling units are made by a truck driver. This leads to disorder in the work stations and fixed posi-tions for a number of smaller components and tools go missing.

    The analysis of the result shows that the pressure that occurs in the assembly line results in high throughput time because the units wait a long time between the stations. To eliminate these waiting times, a suction must be created. The difficul-ties for the operators to move between the stations can be solved with a lower number of operators. This makes it easier for the operators to move between the stations and reduce the waiting time for the operators.

    Detta 20-poängs projekt på D-nivå har genomförts som en fallstudie på Kinnarps AB i syfte att utveckla en prognostiseringsprocess. Processen ska förbättra framförhållningen och underlätta planering på medellång sikt. Efter att undersökt de problem som upplevs på Kinnarps utvecklade vi följande problemformulering:

    Hur ser prognostiseringsarbetet ut på Kinnarps idag?

    Hur bör en generell prognostiseringsprocess utformas?

    Hur kan prognostiseringsprocessen anpassas till Kinnarps?

    En kartläggning av de berörda avdelningarna utfördes för att besvara den första frågan. Kartläggningen genomfördes genom intervjuer av personer på marknads-, produktions-, inköps- och leveranslogistikavdelningen, även återförsäljare intervjuades då de har kontakt med slutkunden och kunskap om marknaden. Flera problem som påträffades kan vara orsakade av Kinnarps korta framförhållning, som överbeläggning i produktionen, hög fyllnadsgrad i lager 5 och lång ledtid. Det finns tecken på brist i kommunikation mellan avdelningarna vilket leder till att alla planerar för att optimera sin egen avdelning och glömmer att se till helheten. Ett ytterliggare problem är att det inte finns en funktion med ansvar för att planera på medellång sikt.

    En litteraturstudie genomfördes för att kunna utveckla en generell prognostiseringsprocess, resultatet blev en cyklisk process som är uppdelad i fyra delprocesser, avvikelseuppföljning, efterfrågeprocessen, prognosförmedling samt processförbättring. För att prognostiseringsprocessen ska överleva och utvecklas anser vi att det bör finnas en prognosansvarig och innan processen kan implementeras måste parametrarna för prognosen bestämmas.

    Den anpassade processen till Kinnarps innehåller samma fyra delprocesser. En diskussion har förts kring vilka parametrar som vore lämpliga som grund till processen. Då Kinnarps inte har någon taktisk framförhållning idag anser vi att de bör börja prognostisera med en horisont på ett år, indelad i kvartalsperioder då den ska uppdateras och utvärderas. Detta är lämpligt då indelningen passar med budgetåret och säsongsvariationerna samt att de med den framförhållningen kan hinna genomföra förändringar i kapacitet. Som underlag till prognosen bör de använda sig av försäljningshistorik från affärssystemet och säljkårsuppfattning från återförsäljare och marknadsexperter. Prognoserna bör göras på en produktmodellnivå, som sedan ska kunna brytas ner på artikelnivå i systemet.

    Prognostiseringsprocessen är ett lämpligt sätt att utveckla samarbetet och integreringen mellan Kinnarps avdelningar då de bör stödja varandra för att förbättra för företaget som helhet. Användandet av en prognostiseringsprocess skulle ge Kinnarps ett bättre underlag för kapacitetsplanering av maskiner och personal i produktionen. Det skulle även kunna ge inköpare bättre förutsättningar vid avtalsförhandling hos leverantörer och bättre leveranssäkerhet. Leveranslogistik skulle kunna planera sina resurser bättre och marknadsavdelningen och återförsäljarna skulle kunna lova sina kunder kortare ledtider vilket skulle ge den konkurrensfördelar.

    Abstract

     

    Purpose– The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that contribute to overproduction and what economic consequence overproduction has. To fulfil the purpose, two research questions has been formulated:

    1. Why does overproduction take place in companies with CNC-machines?
    2. How does overproduction affect cost items that contributes to economic sustainability?

    Method– To fulfil the study’s purpose a single case study has been conducted on a manufacturing company within the automotive industry. Interviews, document studies and a focus group have been the methods for the empirical data collection. The empirical data has been analysed together with the theoretical framework and created the study’s result. 

     

     

    Results– The study resulted in identifying several cost items that are affected by overproduction and different factors that contribute to overproduction have been identified. 

     

    Implications – The study contributed with new information to the knowledge gap regarding overproduction and the consequences of it. Findings from the study can be used as a template for companies that are interested as to which factors contribute to overproduction. 

     

    Limitations– To conduct the study one focal company was used, the focal company is of a manufacturing type with a CNC-machine park and are active in the automotive industry. Because of the characteristics in the automotive industry and the use of only one focal company the generalizability of the study is reduced. To increase the generalizability further studies are required.

    A Study of the Effects of Operational Time Variability in Assembly Lines with Linear Walking Workers2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    In the present fierce global competition, poor responsiveness, low flexibility to meet the uncertainty of demand, and the low efficiency of traditional assembly lines are adequate motives to persuade manufacturers to adopt highly flexible production tools such as cross-trained workers who move along the assembly line while carrying out their planned jobs at different stations [1]. Cross-trained workers can be applied in various models in assembly lines. A novel model which taken into consideration in many industries nowadays is called the linear walking worker assembly line and employs workers who travel along the line and fully assemble the product from beginning to end [2]. However, these flexible assembly lines consistently endure imbalance in their stations which causes a significant loss in the efficiency of the lines. The operational time variability is one of the main sources of this imbalance [3] and is the focus of this study which investigated the possibility of decreasing the mentioned loss by arranging workers with different variability in a special order in walking worker assembly lines. The problem motivation comes from the literature of unbalanced lines which is focused on bowl phenomenon. Hillier and Boling [4] indicated that unbalancing a line in a bowl shape could reach the optimal production rate and called it bowl phenomenon.

     This study chose a conceptual design proposed by a local automotive company as a case study and a discrete event simulation study as the research method to inspect the questions and hypotheses of this research. 

    The results showed an improvement of about 2.4% in the throughput due to arranging workers in a specific order, which is significant compared to the fixed line one which had 1 to 2 percent improvement. In addition, analysis of the results concluded that having the most improvement requires grouping all low skill workers together. However, the pattern of imbalance is significantly effective in this improvement concerning validity and magnitude.

    Abstract [en]

    As a result of the increase in accessibility of computational resources and the increase in the power of the computers during the last two decades, designers are able to create computer models to simulate the behavior of a complex products. To address global competitiveness, companies are forced to optimize their designs and products. Optimizing the design needs several runs of computationally expensive simulation models. Therefore, using metamodels as an efficient and sufficiently accurate approximate of the simulation model is necessary. Radial basis functions (RBF) is one of the several metamodeling methods that can be found in the literature.

    The established approach is to add a bias to RBF in order to obtain a robust performance. The a posteriori bias is considered to be unknown at the beginning and it is defined by imposing extra orthogonality constraints. In this thesis, a new approach in constructing RBF with the bias to be set a priori by using the normal equation is proposed. The performance of the suggested approach is compared to the classic RBF with a posteriori bias. Another comprehensive comparison study by including several modeling criteria, such as problem dimension, sampling technique and size of samples is conducted. The studies demonstrate that the suggested approach with a priori bias is in general as good as the performance of RBF with a posteriori bias. Using the a priori RBF, it is clear that the global response is modeled with the bias and that the details are captured with radial basis functions.

    Multi-objective optimization and the approaches used in solving such problems are briefly described in this thesis. One of the methods that proved to be efficient in solving multi-objective optimization problems (MOOP) is the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2). Multi-objective optimization of a disc brake system of a heavy truck by using SPEA2 and RBF with a priori bias is performed. As a result, the possibility to reduce the weight of the system without extensive compromise in other objectives is found.

    Multi-objective optimization of material model parameters of an adhesive layer with the aim of improving the results of a previous study is implemented. The result of the original study is improved and a clear insight into the nature of the problem is revealed.

    The usage of multi material structures in industry, especially in the automotive industry are increasing. To overcome the difficulties in joining these structures, adhesives have several benefits over traditional joining methods. Therefore, accurate simulations of the entire process of fracture including the adhesive layer is crucial. In this paper, material parameters of a previously developed meso mechanical finite element (FE) model of a thin adhesive layer are optimized using the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA2). Objective functions are defined as the error between experimental data and simulation data. The experimental data is provided by previously performed experiments where an adhesive layer was loaded in monotonically increasing peel and shear. Two objective functions are dependent on 9 model parameters (decision variables) in total and are evaluated by running two FEsimulations, one is loading the adhesive layer in peel and the other in shear. The original study converted the two objective functions into one function that resulted in one optimal solution. In this study, however, a Pareto frontis obtained by employing the SPEA2 algorithm. Thus, more insight into the material model, objective functions, optimal solutions and decision space is acquired using the Pareto front. We compare the results and show good agreement with the experimental data.

    Many engineering design optimization problems involve multiple conflicting objectives, which today often are obtained by computational expensive finite element simulations. Evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) methods based on surrogate modeling is one approach of solving this class of problems. In this paper, multi-objective optimization of a disc brake system to a heavy truck by using EMO and radial basis function networks (RBFN) is presented. Three conflicting objectives are considered. These are: 1) minimizing the maximum temperature of the disc brake, 2) maximizing the brake energy of the system and 3) minimizing the mass of the back plate of the brake pad. An iterative Latin hypercube sampling method is used to construct the design of experiments (DoE) for the design variables. Next, thermo-mechanical finite element analysis of the disc brake, including frictional heating between the pad and the disc, is performed in order to determine the values of the first two objectives for the DoE. Surrogate models for the maximum temperature and the brake energy are created using RBFN with polynomial biases. Different radial basis functions are compared using statistical errors and cross validation errors (PRESS) to evaluate the accuracy of the surrogate models and to select the most accurate radial basis function. The multi-objective optimization problem is then solved by employing EMO using the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2). Finally, the Pareto fronts generated by the proposed methodology are presented and discussed.

    In this paper, an approach to generate surrogate modelsconstructed by radial basis function networks (RBFN) with a prioribias is presented. RBFN as a weighted combination of radialbasis functions only, might become singular and no interpolationis found. The standard approach to avoid this is to add a polynomialbias, where the bias is defined by imposing orthogonalityconditions between the weights of the radial basis functionsand the polynomial basis functions. Here, in the proposed a prioriapproach, the regression coefficients of the polynomial biasare simply calculated by using the normal equation without anyneed of the extra orthogonality prerequisite. In addition to thesimplicity of this approach, the method has also proven to predictthe actual functions more accurately compared to the RBFNwith a posteriori bias. Several test functions, including Rosenbrock,Branin-Hoo, Goldstein-Price functions and two mathematicalfunctions (one large scale), are used to evaluate the performanceof the proposed method by conducting a comparisonstudy and error analysis between the RBFN with a priori and aposteriori known biases. Furthermore, the aforementioned approachesare applied to an engineering design problem, that ismodeling of the material properties of a three phase sphericalgraphite iron (SGI) .     Abstract [en]

    In order to obtain a robust performance, the established approach when using radial basis function networks (RBF) as metamodels is to add a posteriori bias which is defined by extra orthogonality constraints. We mean that this is not needed, instead the bias can simply be set a priori by using the normal equation, i.e. the bias becomes the corresponding regression model. In this paper we demonstrate that the performance of our suggested approach with a priori bias is in general as good as, or even for many test examples better than, the performance of RBF with a posteriori bias. Using our approach, it is clear that the global response is modelled with the bias and that the details are captured with radial basis functions. The accuracy of the two approaches are investigated by using multiple test functions with different degrees of dimensionality. Furthermore, several modeling criteria, such as the type of radial basis functions used in the RBFs, dimension of the test functions, sampling techniques and size of samples, are considered to study their affect on the performance of the approaches. The power of RBF with a priori bias for surrogate based design optimization is also demonstrated by solving an established engineering benchmark of a welded beam and another benchmark for different sampling sets generated by successive screening, random, Latin hypercube and Hammersley sampling, respectively. The results obtained by evaluation of the performance metrics, the modeling criteria and the presented optimal solutions, demonstrate promising potentials of our RBF with a priori bias, in addition to the simplicity and straight-forward use of the approach.

    In today's global manufacturing environment, changes are inevitable and something that every manufacturer must respond to and take advantage of, whether it is in regards to technology changes, product changes, or changes in the manufacturing processes. The reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) meets this challenge through the ability to rapidly and efficiently change capacity and functionality, which is the reason why it has been widely labelled the manufacturing paradigm of the future. However, design of the RMS represents a significant challenge compared to the design of traditional manufacturing systems, as it should be designed for efficient production of multiple variants, as well as multiple product generations over its lifetime. Thus, critical decisions regarding the degree of scalability and convertibility of the system must be considered in the design phase, which affects the abilities to reconfigure the system in accordance with changes during its operating lifetime. However, in current research it is indicated that conventional manufacturing system design methods do not support the design of an RMS and that a systematic RMS design method is lacking, despite the fact that numerous contributions exist. Moreover, there is currently only limited evidence for the breakthrough of reconfigurability in industry. Therefore, the research presented in this paper aims at synthesizing current contributions into a generic method for RMS design. Initially, currently available design methods for RMS are reviewed, in terms of classifying and comparing their content, structure, and scope, which leads to a synthesis of the reviewed methods into a generic design method. In continuation of this, the paper includes a discussion of practical implications related to carrying out the design, including an identification of potential challenges and an assessment of which tools that can be applied to support the design. Conclusively, further areas for research are indicated, which provides valuable knowledge of how to develop and realize the benefits of reconfigurability in industry.

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the development of a strategically integrated product and production system portfolio could be enabled by the concept of reconfigurable manufacturing. In previous research, several critical challenges related to developing production system portfolios have been identified, but it has not been investigated how developing a reconfigurable manufacturing concept could aid some of these. Therefore, through a multiple case study, these critical challenges have been investigated in two companies that have recently developed reconfigurable manufacturing concepts for multiple variants and generations of products. The findings reveal that the companies need to deal with several challenges in order to enable a functioning RMS.     Propagation of acoustic waves in a two-dimensional duct with an impedance condition at the boundary, is studied. The duct is assumed to have two ends at infinity being asymptotically straight, but otherwise to be arbitrarily shaped.The so called Building Block Method allows us to synthesize propagation properties for ducts with complicated geometries from results for simpler ducts. Conformal mappings can be used to transform these simple ducts to straight ducts with constant cross-sections.By using recently developed techniques for numerical conformal mappings, it is possible to construct a transformation between an infinite strip and an arbitrarily shaped duct with smooth or piecewise smooth boundary, keeping both smoothness and the well controlled boundary direction towards infinity that the above mentioned method requires.To accomplish a stable formulation of the problem, we express it in terms of scattering operators. The resulting differential equation is solved using wave splitting and invariant embedding techniques. We expand the involved functions in Fourier series, and hence, it is possible to give the operators a matrix representation. Numerical results are produced using truncated matrices.

    Together with Attends in Aneby a thesis of 15 ECTS (credits) have been undertaken. The assignment was to develop a new incontinence product for single use. Users of the product value comfort, flexibility, softness, comfort and a discreet product. Users are for individuals with incontinence problems that usually receive the products via prescription. The product must also have an attractive price and good quality from the purchase / originator's perspective.

    Currently there are two models that Attends supplies, which the project intends to develop, (Slips / Briefs and Pull On's). The first has a low price but also lower usability than the other. The products have a well-developed absorptive function and with respect to this, only a new design of the chassis will be developed. Project issue were: How should a concept look like when combining Pull On's and Slips / Briefs? Is it possible to develop a better product?

    Production methods, costs and customer satisfaction will not be taken into account given that incontinence is a sensitive topic and that it would make the task too extensive. Consideration of patents, industrial designs and design protection are not taken into account when over two hundred applications per month are registered.   The mission was carried out as a development project where the product is broken down into parts which are then developed and combined to form a new developed product. Tools that were used are brainstorming and morphological matrix. This project resulted in a concept that can be described as a hybrid of today's two products. With two parts of elastic material in the waist, the product will gain a better fit for the user. It also creates a wider span between the maximum and minimum waistline each size will cover. The final product also has an adjustment function to increase the user friendliness and comfort. With the help of adjustment so you can change the pressure against the body, making the user able to customize the product. A continuation of the project is to examine whether new materials can be inserted into the device instead of the elastic composite. It is important that further development of the product is made together with a test group to gain answers about ease of use and other problems that can arise in everyday use. A continuation should also involve interviewing healthcare professionals who come into contact with the product.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose of the thesis was to improve the material supply for assembly line.

    Methodology - The collected data were conducted through observations and measurements at the case company. Empirical data were analyzed and compared with the theoretical framework.

    Result - Several non-value adding activities were identified in the case study that resulted in 88% of the total working effort. These non-value adding activities were classified into wastes referring to Liker and Meier (2006). Six different wastes were found: excess inventory, unnecessary transportation, unnecessary movements, defected products, waiting, unused and neglected resources. Improvement recommendations were proposed to increase the efficiency of the material supply.

    Conclusions – There is at least one improvement proposal for every identified waste and combinations of these improvement proposals can reduce the non-value adding activities. Methods that can be useful to improve the material supply efficiency are change storage policy, reduce batch size, route plan milk-runs, implement standard work procedures and develop and integrate the information system. 5S and Kaizen are proposed theories that promote continuous improvements of the material supply.

    Research Limitations – Since there are many factors affecting the material supply, more improvement proposals could have been found without delimitation of activities. This thesis is based on a single case study which leads to generalizable results for only companies with similar circumstances.

    Further Research – By implementing the conducted improvement proposals a comparison of non-value adding activities is possible to strengthen the presented methods.Key Words – Material Supply, Lean production, Non-Value Adding Activities, Wastes, Efficiency Improvements.

    The problem of automating design processes is often related to the difficulties with updating, maintaining and sharing the information. This thesis provides a descriptive case study of a large company’s design automation process and the difficulties of reusing already existing solutions.

     

    The main purpose of the thesis has been to trace a product family from its specification of demands to a complete design program. An account is given of the documentation written during the product development process, of the different data storages and also how the company has implemented design automation in their process.

     

    The results have been reached through a series of interviews as well as previous studies and material from the company. From an analysis of the results proposed solutions are given and focus on the low quality the documentation has and how it is a result of a rapid growth within the company.

    This thesis was rendered for the client HAGS Aneby AB that is a global leader in playground equipment. The goal of this project was to develop a seesaw that is available for children aged 5-12 years; both with and without disabilities. The project has aimed to develop a seesaw that fits everyone in the target group without looking specially adapted.

    Children with disabilities have difficulty using today's seesaws because they consist of only a seat and a handle on each side. It requires that the user has strong arms and legs and can sit up without support. HAGS Aneby AB would like to change this.

    To gain knowledge of the target group and on the different types of disabilities information was sought for on the internet including the RBU's and UNICEF's websites. During implementation several concepts was developed and screened off to finally get the final result. Methods such as QFD, feasibility assessment and Go/No-Go-screening have been implemented. The instructions in the safety standard EN 1176 has been closely followed in the development of the seesaw.

    The final concept shows a broad seat with handles, seat backs and footrests on each side of a central section that is in the form of a U. On the sides of the seats there is a high lateral support, to lean against, and a low lateral support. Entry and exit will happen on the side where the low lateral support is situated. Rubber buds are placed on the back of the seats and on the outside of the high lateral support, so that an assistant could be able to assist with entry and exit and also to provide extra speed in use. A rubber suspension unit, that makes the seesaw move, restricts the movement to ± 30˚. In order to stimulate the senses, such as vision and hearing, a ballgame was placed in the middle part of the platform.

    Problembakgrund

    Weland AB tillverkar bland annat spiraltrappor. En spiraltrappa består utav flera olika komponenter som i sin tur består av ett flertal detaljer, alla komponenter har ett specifikt materialflöde i tillverkningen. Weland AB tillverkar två olika typer av spiraltrappor, standard- och tillverkningstrappa. Standardtrappans komponenter tillverkas mot lager och följer standardiserade mått med krav på belastning medan tillverkningstrappans komponenter tillverkas mot kundorder. Enligt företagets policy tar det två veckor för en standardtrappa att levereras och åtta veckor för en tillverkningstrappa. En liten förändring av minst en av standardtrappans komponenter medför att leveransledtiden utökas med sex veckor. Idag finns ingen nulägesbeskrivning över kundorderuppfyllelseprocessen för spiraltrapporna, vilket medför att det är svårt för företaget att veta om de angivna leveranstiderna är rimliga att erbjuda kunderna eller om de kan reduceras.

     

    Syfte

    Syftet med projektet var att göra en nulägesanalys över kundorderuppfyllelseprocessen för tillverkningstrappan samt generera förbättringsförslag som kan minska leveransledtiden.

     

    Metod

    Metoden som användes för att kartlägga nuläget var värdeflödesanalys. Metoden medförde att både material- och informationsflödet analyserades i kundorderuppfyllelseprocessen. Data som saknades för att kartlägga nuläget identifierades via observationer i produktionen och samlades in med hjälp av ett ifyllnadsdokument “Informationskortet”. Informationskortet fick följa med en kundorder för en tillverkningstrappa från planering till leverans. Intervjuer och samtal följde sedan för att öka validiteten i resultatet. Efter kartläggningen analyserades nuläget och begränsningsteorin användes för att identifiera förekommande begränsningar i flödet.

     

    Resultat

    Kartläggningen av nuläget åskådliggjorde ett begränsat informationsflöde och visade att företaget saknade ett helhetsperspektiv för spiraltrapporna. Värdeflödesanalysen visade att cirka 1,3 % skapade mervärde för kunden i kundorderuppfyllelseprocessen. Förslag till förbättringar togs sedan fram med hjälp av kartläggningen och nulägesanalysen. Ett av förslagen innebar att dagliga order läggs ut i produktion istället för veckoorder tillsammans med ett dragande system (kanbansystem). Förslaget kompletterades med att introducera ”styrningstavlor” för att erhålla en mer visuell styrning i produktionen. Syftet med förbättringsförslaget var att minska den totala genomloppstiden för komponenterna i produktionen. Det andra förbättringsförslaget innebar att öka kapaciteten på en begränsning med syfte att reducera genomloppstiden i förberedningen. Med de båda förbättringsförslagen kunde en ny teoretisk leveransledtid uppskattas. Leveransledtiden uppskattas kunna minskas från 39 arbetsdagar (åtta veckor) till 10 arbetsdagar för en spiraltrappa som tillverkas mot kundorder.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is a final thesis project written at the Technical University of Jönköping and was done in cooperation with the company Sundström Safety AB. The project discussed in this report is about product development, where two concepts are to be developed from two existing lightweight hoods SR 561 and SR 562. Lightweight hoods are a protective device used in critical environments. Lightweight hoods are used in chemical environments to protect the user from the hazardous environment. The current products are considered to be slightly hard to use in case of equipping and removing the products, and therefore Sundström Safety AB wants to develop new concepts for these two products.

    Standards that restrict and claim the product are specified by the company and a literature review is made on these to define the requirements on the product. These requirements are compiled and on the basis of them, concepts are created by following the design process. Different methods such as brainstorming and idea sketching are used to generate concepts that are then screened with screening methods such as Pugh's matrix.

    After only two concepts remain, a concept for a reusable lightweight hood and a one- time use hood concept, a final prototype is made. This prototype is made on the reusable concept as it has the most features. The prototype is manufactured using 3D printing as well as other plastic details.

    The concepts created in this report may be used for Sundström Safety AB in the development of the current products. The concepts can give an idea of how new products can be developed and inspires to new solutions of the lightweight hoods.

    This thesis is carried out at Portsystem 2000 AB who manufactures and markets industrial doors and docking systems. The background to this thesis is that the company’s management considers that their follow-up process of cost accounts is not fully functioning.

    The aim with this report is to investigate and describe the present procedure of the follow-up process concerning the time of operations and come up with suggestions for improvements. This thesis is performed within the range of the following areas: Information systems, quality, processes and cost calculation. The main method we used were semi structured interviews with a fairly opened framework. We also did a small-scale quantitative survey. The results from our investigation are that Portsystem lacks in the following matters:

    • Communication between the parts of the information system

    • Formulated routines for handling of divergence

    • Mapping of causes for divergence

    • Reliability in the information system

    Our conclusions are that Portsystem first of all need to put effort in doing an extensive revision of the present time estimations for the products with existing cost accounts. They should also examine the possibilities of making the enterprise system communicate with the MRP–system. More frequently executed calculations are a way of improving the precision in the cost estimations. We also consider that Portsystem should put effort in examine the distinguishable causes for divergence and take them into account during the follow-up process.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze stops that occur in the painting process of trucks; specifically related to the buffer system after the top coat process. Based on this investigation, improvements are presented in order to eliminate stops and improve overall assembly time. With this scope in mind, the following issues have been raised:

     

    1. 1.     What are the root causes for stops in the buffer system?
    2. 2.     How much can corrective maintenance be reduced?
    3. 3.     What potential savings are achieved by reducing or eliminating stops in the buffer system?
    4. 4.     How would reducing stops increase the availability for the top coat paint shop?

     

    A case study has been performed where historical data has been analyzed and staff from the production, maintenance and IT departments have been interviewed. The analyzed data along with a theoretical framework are the basis for the suggested actions that will improve flows through the top coat production.

    The result indicates that a great part of the delays related to the buffer system are caused by soft losses. The stops are the results of:

    • Lack of a distinct set of rules for how data and software may be used
    • Lack of communication between the workshops

    The implications of these delays are: increased costs and reduced efficiency of the production line. The purposed actions presented in the study gives the company opportunity to achieve full capacity, eliminate delays and increase overall efficiency.

    The study is limited to the top coat paint shop and does not include the primary paint shop or final assembly. The results, analysis and suggestions presented in the study includes the soft losses that causes stop in the buffer system.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is a bachelor thesis work in the field of product development and design. The assignment has been to develop a solution for roof racks, normally used for cars, to fit on the open trailer models FS1425 and Alugance. The project was implemented by Johan Andersson and Victor Karlsson, students at the Mechanical Engineering program with a focus on product development and design at Jönköping’s school of Engineering, in spring 2012.

    The client wants to use transport solutions in the same way as roof racks on cars. The user of such a product is assumed to desire simplicity, safety and an attractive design with an appealing price, which has been a challenge during the thesis work.

    Pre-studies have been conducted to examine the potential competitors and gain knowledge in the research area. Concepts have been generated by the method of brainstorming and evaluated and screened by the method Go/No-Go and Pugh’s decision matrix. In modeling the concepts, the CAD program Solid Works is used.

    The work resulted in one solution for FS1425 and one for Alugance where both solutions are based on a standard approach/kit. Each kit consists of a rubber component and two plates that produce a clamping force to the trailer profile using two screws. Concepts prototypes have been made by modifying the current plates and 3D printing. For further development of the concepts, the focus should be on production optimization and testing of functional prototypes.

Konceptet är utvecklat av Emtes Ingenjörsbyrå och i examensarbetet ingår att konstruera ett spjällhus med det nya konceptet för motorcykelmodellen Suzuki Hayabusa. Det standardmonterade spjällhuset är anpassat för gatubruk och ett brett effektregister. För dragracing är den maximala effekten avgörande och det standard monterade spjällhuset är en flaskhals vid WOT (Wide Open Throttle).

    För konceptet saknas dock fullständiga lösningar för diverse funktioner. I examensarbetet ingår att komplettera konceptet med en returmekanism, synkroniseringsanordning och erforderliga standarkomponenter. I början av arbetet skall även en kravspecifikation och DFMEA (Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis) upprättas.

    Den slutliga konstruktionen uppfyller de uppsatta kraven enligt krav-specifikationen. Spjällhuset är kompakt, enkelt att montera och anpassat för tillverkning i små serier. Den symmetriska konstruktionen förenklar CNC-tillverkningen (Computer Numerical Control) och sänker tillverknings-kostnaderna.

    Avslutningsvis genomfördes provning för att jämföra det nya spjällhuset med det standardmonterade. Metoden visades vara olämplig och provningen av spjällhuset blev resultatlös. Vidare provning av spjällhuset med andra metoder rekommenderas men lämnas utanför examensarbetet på grund av tids¬begräsningarna.

    Hur kan två automatiserade monteringslinor effektiviseras för att öka antalet färdigmonterade produkter i timmen? Denna fråga ställdes inledandevis vid utformningen av detta examensarbete, som är gjort i samarbete med företaget Thule Sweden AB (Thule). Bakgrunden till detta examensarbete är att Thule anser att två av deras monteringslinor inte når sin fulla kapacitet. Utifrån bakgrunden kom syftet att öka antalet färdigmonterade produkter per timme för respektive monteringslina. För att besvara syftet formulerades tre frågeställningar; Hur kan monteringstakten öka genom kortare upptäcktstider vid larm? Vilka rutiner kan implementeras för att skapa förutsättningar till ökad monteringstakt? Finns det möjlighet till ytterligare ökad monteringstakt? För de båda linorna finns ett mål uppsatt om hur många paketerade kartonger (fyra produkter per kartong) som ska göras i timmen, 90 respektive 100 stycken.

    För att besvarar frågeställningarna och på så vis uppfylla arbetets syfte har datainsamling i form av tidsstudier, observationer och samtal genomförts. Datainsamlingen har sedan analyserats för att skapa en bild av nuläget. Nulägesbeskrivningen ligger sedan till grund för förbättringsarbetet.

    Gällande lina X ansågs den största förbättringspotentialen finnas i linans larmsystem. I dagsläget tar det drygt 20 sekunder för operatörerna att upptäcka larmen. Upptäcktstiden påverkar antalet färdiga kartonger i timmen genom att utrustningen står stilla på grund av att operatörerna är omedvetna om larmen. Upptäcktstiden går troligtvis att sänka genom investeringar i larmsystemet. Under förutsättning att upptäcktstiden sänks till noll sekunder ökar monteringstakten med nästan tio kartonger per timme. Med en upptäcktstid på noll sekunder samt andra förbättringar kan monteringstakten öka med totalt 14,3 kartonger per timme.

    Lina Y:s larmsystem är annorlunda i jämförelse med det som finns på lina X. Upptäcktstiden vid lina Y är endast en sjättedel av upptäcktstiden för lina X, därför ansågs det viktigare att lägga större vikt vid att förbättra andra problemområden. För att förbättra en manuell monteringsstation gjordes en SAM-analys på en ny monteringsmetod. SAM-analysen visade att monteringstiden kan minskas från 8,45 sekunder till 7,37 sekunder. Det finns också en automatiserad station med 8,35 sekunders operationstid. Lyckas Thule reducera denna tid till en operationstid under 7,37 och att den nya monteringsmetoden implementeras kommer de få ut 15,6 fler kartonger per timme. Genomförs också övriga förbättringsförslag kommer monteringstakten öka med ytterligare 7,8 kartonger per timme.         

    Slutsatsen för detta examensarbete är att det går att öka antalet färdigpaketerade kartonger med 14,3 respektive 23,4 kartonger i timmen. Detta förutsatt att Thule implementerar de förslag som tagits fram.
