Background: Stroke is a common occurring cardiovascular disease worldwide. When the stroke occurs a brain damage appears from lack of oxygen. The cause is either an infarct or a hemorrhage in the brain's vascular system. This can lead to physical and mental disabilities. The nurse will often come into contact with those suffering from stroke, and therefore it is important to have understandings of how they experience life after stroke. Aim: The aim was to describe people's experiences of life after stroke. Method: A literature review based on studies with a qualitative approach. Three databases were used in the search of the articles. Twelve articles were included to the result. The analysis was based on a five-step approach. Results: The experience of life after stroke is a changed life situation. This change is described in subthemes altered body, altered self-image, changed relations, dependent on others, limited participation in social activities and adaptation to a new every day. Conclusion: The results showed that the living situation changed after onset and adaptation to the situation occupied a large part of the people's lives. Knowledge of experience from people having a stroke leads the nurses to have a greater insight into the person’s lifeworld and can give nursing from a holistic perspective.
