Creative play sculptures from a sustainable and intermedial perspective2023In: Environmental Emergencies Across Media: Abstracts, 2023, p. 5-5Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation aims to broaden research of children’s culture and sustainability by treating the visual arts in an educational environment, namely Sofia Sundberg's play sculptures at a Swedish preschool. Place for life and place to grow are the project’s governing principles, to be inaugurated in February 2023. The sculptures are designed to become bearers of life by promoting biological diversity. The sculptures differ therefore from traditional play sculptures that since modernism are experience-based (Druker 2008). For one sculpture, the artist also creates a book dedicated to story time.

During the presentation, the artist relates the idea, the artworks, preparations, inauguration and collaboration with the municipality and school. Anette Almgren White contributes with a theoretical anchoring in ecocriticism, intermediality and children's perspective by exploring approaches to the environment, sustainability and collaboration between man, animal, and nature the sculptures encourage. Useful concepts in this context are ecoliteracy and cross-species solidarity to understand the interdependent relations. (Almgren White 2020).

The perspective includes, in addition to the visual arts works, the collaboration between sculpture and book in relation to sustainability in materials, the importance of place, young children's meaning-making and the preschool's pedagogical mission (Skaret 2014, Hvit Lindstrand 2015, Lpfö18 (Skolverket).

Motion Graphics in Relation to Branding: An Exploratory Study2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, there are many trends and changes happening in the market industry, in order to cope with the rise of technologies. Brands are finding new, modern, and revolutionary ways in order to elevate their identities into new levels. Therefore, the adoption of motion graphics and videos yield remarkable improvements in marketing in general. The benefits of motion graphics and its impact on the field of design and marketing have attracted the attention of researchers and businesses around the world.

This thesis focuses on the benefits of motion graphics in branding, and how it can add more values, opportunities, and movement to digital brand identities in order to make brands live and breathe. First, the term “Motion Graphics” is introduced and defined, for it is a vague concept for some of the viewers. In addition, a small description of the history of branding and motion graphics is touched upon, in order to give the viewers, the idea of where both fields came from and how they evolved to the level they are now. Second, the thesis uses a qualitative method such as semi-structured interviews, together with data through the insights, experiences, and knowledge of professional designers working in the field. The interview method is chosen because it is best suited to provide a more complete understanding of the research problem than quantitative data for this specific topic.

Then this thesis continues to illustrate the importance of adding motion graphics in every digital brand. Where each brand can have its own unique style of animation that can differentiate their identity in the market. Therefore, some examples are presented as well as some successful digital brands that have their own animation and illustration style that make their identity stand out. Finally, the results show that motion graphics is indeed in demand and may become a norm to be added in every digital brand toolkit. In addition, motion graphics can add dynamism, can reflect the digital brand and its attributes in a better way, help brands convey their messages in a more effective way, and can increase the value and make it more suitable for social media.

Enhancing User Satisfaction Through Micro-interactions: A Qualitative Study of Usability on Spotify2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the impact of micro-interactions on user satisfaction within music applications, specifically examining the usability differences between simpler and more complex interactions. The research employs semi-structured interviews to assess user satisfaction with two different levels of micro-interaction complexity. The goal is to derive actionable insights for optimising user-centred design in digital music streaming platforms, ultimately enhancing user satisfaction.

The semi-structured interview method is chosen for this study, with the assistance of A/B testing designed by the researchers to gain realistic and informative qualitative data. To analyse a large amount of qualitative data, thematic analysis is utilised as the analytic method.

The results reveal a clear preference for simple micro-interactions. Participants found these interactions required fewer steps, were more intuitive, and demanded minimal cognitive effort, thereby avoiding information and feature overload. In contrast, complex micro-interactions often led to confusion and frustration due to unnecessary complexity and unclear iconography. Moreover, participants expressed a need for personalised and voice-activated interactions to enhance usability and accessibility in diverse contexts.

These findings underscore the importance of designing micro-interactions that align with users' mental models and preferences. By prioritising simplicity, intuitiveness, and personalization, music streaming services can significantly improve user satisfaction and engagement.

Dark vs Light: A Study on Dark Mode's Effects on User Trust and Brand Perception2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the emergence of Dark Mode as a user interface design trend, it has increasingly been employed in operating systems, websites, and applications. There are several benefits to using Dark Mode: it can save battery life, reduce eye strain, is suitable for dark environments, and can be used as a reason for branding. This study aims to investigate whether Dark Mode applied to mobile commerce platforms impacts user trust and users’ perception of a brand in comparison to Light Mode. This study used a mixed-methods approach, including A/B testing followed by a questionnaire with Likert scale questions and open-ended questions, and involved 24 participants who were split into two groups, one testing a Light Mode version of a mobile commerce prototype and one testing a Dark Mode version. The results showed that while the Light Mode participant group had similar thoughts and feelings of the app which were mostly positive, the Dark Mode participant group was divided in their thoughts and feelings of the application related to trustworthiness and the perception of the brand. Dark Mode negatively impacts user trust and negatively impacts users’ perception of a brand. The findings of this study provide meaningful insights into the field of user interface design and branding and can serve as a reference for future studies within the field.

Bildens roll i elevers meningsskapande om äldre litterära texter2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Digitala verktyg inom bildundervisningen: En kvalitativ intervjustudie med fem bildlärare2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
