    Abstract [en]

    This thesis was initiated in collaboration with Husqvarna Rider and Semcon AB. The thesis developed concepts for automated attachment of gardening tools to the front of the ride-on mowers developed by Husqvarna Rider. These concepts aim to improve the users experience when shifting between the cutting deck and other available tools, while avoiding direct interaction with the vehicles’s belt drive. The project also researched documented information and theory regarding the construction to establish a foundation for future development of the product detail.

    The work has been carried out through pilot study, study of literature and concept study. The concept study has consisted of preparatory work, concept generation, concept evaluation and concept selection. Examples of methods used in this study are 6-3-5 brainwriting, contradiction charts, morphology and decision matrices using robust decision methodology. The study worked with a total of over 100 ideas and concepts which were reduced down to two solutions. One of these can be applied with minimal investment while the other possesses a good potential for broader future application.

    The first solution was chosen as it had the potential to improve the existing product with relatively minor modifications of the construction. The second solution was chosen as it provided a very efficient tool switch with fewer failure modes than other concepts. The second solution also had the potential of application in other products and allows remote interaction with the belt drive, resulting in improved user safety.
