With the help of a study of the literature, I will argue for the need forresearch regarding crisis communication between the authorities and themedia in the event of extraordinary societal situations. Such research is ofimportance (both practical and theoretical), because this type of crisiscommunication can affect the authorities rescue work, the journalists´ newsreporting and the development of a societal extraordinary event into a crisissituation. The study is part of a forthcoming doctoral thesis which examinesthe interplay, the crisis communication, between the Swedish authorities andthe media in connection with the Estonia catastrophe of 1994.

Myndigheters och mediers kriskommunikation med varandra i samband med extraordinära händelser är av betydelse att studera då kommunikationen kan ligga till grund för myndigheternas räddningsarbete, för det journalistiska nyhetsarbetet, för medborgarnas rätt till information samt för hur en extraordinär händelse kan eskalera till någon typ av krissituation. Trots kriskommunikationsforskningens kraftiga uppsving från mitten av 1990-talet, har dock inte myndigheters och mediers kriskommunikation och samspel med varandra uppmärksammats i någon större utsträckning. De senaste årens omfattande forskning har i första hand varit associerad med kommersiella företag och verksamheter. Detta paper redogör för tidigare forskning inom det relativt outforskade området kriskommunikation mellan myndigheter och medier i samband med extraordinära händelser. Texten tar avstamp i en jämförelse med närliggande områden så som katastrof- och riskforskning, och i kriskommunikationsbegreppets koppling till olika forskningsområden.
