A living lie or living truth: Hypertextual, intertextual and discursive aspects of web pages dealing with the Protocols of Zion2015In: Journal of Applied Journalism and Media Studies, ISSN 2001-0818, E-ISSN 2049-9531, Vol. 4, no 3, p. 417-434Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Protocols of the Wise Men of Zion describe a Jewish conspiracy against the world. In 1921 they were proven to be a forgery, but are still used for anti-Semitic purposes. On the Internet the Protocols can easily be spread and discussed. This study aims at exploring the use on the Internet today, by whom, for what purposes and in what contexts. The first twenty web pages found through the search engine Google (www.google.se) when searching for sions vises protokoll were analysed based on the concept of The Hypertextual Dialogue with three levels: a technical level, an intertextual level and a discursive level. The result focuses on the function of the links as well as the use of different types of texts. There are discourses related to history, media, rhetoric, ideology/religion and literature, and, on a wider perspective, to a discourse about freedom of speech on the Internet.

The Anyone-Can-Edit Syndrome: Intercreation stories of three featured articles on Wikipedia2014In: Nordicom Review, ISSN 1403-1108, E-ISSN 2001-5119, Vol. 35, no Special Issue, p. 189-203Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The user-generated wiki encyclopedia Wikipedia was launched in January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Wikipedia has become the world’s largest wiki encyclopedia, and behind many of its entries are interesting stories of creation, or rather intercreation, since Wikipedia is produced by a large number of contributors. Using the slogan “the free ency-clopedia that anyone can edit” (Wikipedia 2013),Wikipedia invites everyone to participate, but the participants do not necessarily represent all kinds of individuals or interests – there might be an imbalance affecting the content as well as the perspective conveyed. As a phenomenon Wikipedia is quite complex, and can be studied from many different angels, for instance through the articles’ history and the edits to them. This paper is based on a study of Featured Articles from the Swedish Wikipedia. Three articles, Fri vilja [Free will], Fjäll [Fell], and Edgar Allan Poe, are chosen from a list of Featured Articles that belongs to the subject field culture. The articles’ development has been followed from their very first versions in 2003/2004 to edits made at the end of 2012. The aim is to examine the creation, or intercreation, processes of the articles, and the collaborative production. The data come from non-article material such as revision history pages, article material, and some complementary statistics. Principally the study has a qualitative approach, but with some quantitative elements.

Wikipedia’s falling stars. Arguments for demotion when articles lose their status as featured articles2019In: Virtual sites as learning spaces: Critical issues on languaging research in changing eduscapes / [ed] Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta, Giulia Messina Dahlberg & Ylva Lindberg, Cham: Palgrave Macmillan, 2019, p. 97-120Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Wikipedia has a complex relationship to the encyclopaedic genre and the knowledge it represents. Texts are expected to advance from an initial rudimentary stage to being high-quality articles. The very best texts become Featured Articles (FA) provided with a star.

Research usually focuses on promotion processes, while aspects of demotion—that articles no longer considered to be among the best can lose their featured status and star—receive almost no attention. Therefore, this study aims to examine why FAs lose their status. Based on arguments and rhetoric on downgraded articles’ talk pages, the results suggest that the main reason for demotion is lack of references and verifiability. Despite being explicitly explained, Wikipedia’s quality criteria seem difficult to apply in practice. Since inadequate FAs may have been overlooked for years, the star is a deceptive quality indicator.
